I practically grew up in that theatre. I was a crossing guard at Twin Peaks Elementary School and we received a discount card for the Castro and Embassy theatres which got us kids in for 50 cents. I too was 14 when 2001 came out. It opened at the Golden Gate Cinerama Theatre in downtown SF. Eventually it made it to the Castro when it was in 2nd run years later in the early 70's, and many times after that.
I moved from San Francisco to Vermont over a dozen years ago. I miss the Castro Theater. The 70mm festivals were always terrific. I think I saw "2001" at least ten times over the years. Do your best to not let this movie palace be turned into office space or housing for wealthy morons. Great venue, great neighborhood - easy to get nostalgic about. Best wishes from Vermont 🍁

Amen to keeping the Castro Theater alive. I moved out of the city 20-odd years ago, and it still stings that the Coronet on Geary is no more.
