I keep a folder in my Ravelry favourites called "colour ideas". When I see a project where I love the colours it gets saved there. Then it is easy to scroll through and browse palettes that I know I love when I'm looking for ideas.

I love the projects that I have knit that were based off of a beloved home decor item, or art work. Taking shades from a piece I all ready love, generally turns out brilliantly.

I also think the projects tab on Ravelry is very helpful. Seeing what colors others have used before in the project - unless the project is very new - is inspiring.

Sometimes I knit with colours I enjoy and then overdye the piece into something that actually suits me. That might be an option for your bright shawl :)

I haven't seen one of your videos in quite a while. I abandoned my yarn hobby during lockdown. I just wasn't getting the same joy from it, probably because I couldn't give my FOs away. I'm glad you're still doing videos. You look so well/happy :)

I love SW but sometimes there is too much color so this helps a lot. Thank you.

I like getting my favorite self striping yarns and then isolating each color and finding those colors in solid skeins.
Also paint chips work really well for color matching.
I have also gotten photos or my favorite clothing and gotten yarn that matched the colors in those things and use those

Love these tactics!! I totally forgot about paint chips! They're perfect if you need a tangible reference (instead of digital) Thanks for sharing! 🤗

I take lots of photos of places and things that interest me and if I'm stuck for colour ideas I look through them, for example I took lots of photos of rusting trains at a railway museum that I went to with my son a few years ago and used a photo of one train that had rust bubbling through the teal and blue paint as my colour inspiration for knitting Ann Weaver's Chittagong shawl, using my hand spun yarn.

These tips help so much! These tips will definitely help me to get better at choosing colors😊 So far, I have only knit the Boneyard Shawl and the Purl Ridge Scarf in more muted colors. Your shawls are super pretty 😍

I get analysis paralysis for single colour patterns... I'm sure a bigger stash would help with that. Yep! A foolproof solution for sure!! 😅
Edit, love the B-movie style thumbnail XD

I am able to used Ravelry and enjoy looking at other combinations, both for what I would consider and those that do not work for me. Helps with variegated yarns too.

Great tips Kristin! Your Smock It Shawl is one of my favorite color meets pattern combinations ever 😍 I like using Pinterest too for color inspiration (definitely a rabbit hole) as well as I purchased all the paint chip decks Sherwin Williams had available back when we built a home (and had to pick out ALL the colors for ALL the rooms) they are very helpful for inspiring color combinations.

Have you ever/would you ever consider putting together photos of 3-5 of your colorways as palate inspiration? I’m loving Outlander in the next shop update, but I’m torn between leaning into the orange, the blue or the purple for pairing. Seeing the colorways next to others, especially the more color-filled ones, might be a helpful addition to your website. (Or is this already somewhere and I’m missing all the fun?!)

This is very helpful, thank you. I’ve looked at b&w photos of the yarn but never thought to do it with shawl photo, duh🤓
And you’re explanation of how to use the color wheel is clear and concise!

Great tips! There are often times that I pass on pattern initially bc of the color way it’s presented in… then I keep feeling it calling me back bc of the item and change the colors (and sometimes the textures) and then I’m so happy I went back to said pattern! I’d never thought about taking a picture and “removing” the colors to find what I’m looking for! Great ideas! Thanks again!

It's can be a hard thing to do!! I wanted to mention that it's kind of like house hunting (something I'm doing now) ... if a house is painted all whacky colors inside, it takes me a while to process the actual space before deciding to pass on the house all together 😂

    • @beverlyhess611
      @beverlyhess611 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Voolenvine lol! I can so relate to the house paint colors analogy! That’s a fantastic point that I’d use too! Sometimes it’s hard to imagine your own things in rooms that have totally different color schemes than you’d ever use!

Kristin! I love all your great tips and info! I did want to point out though, that the color wheel you showed in this video isn’t correct. Whoever designed that graphic didn’t create an accurate wheel of complimentary or tertiary colors. Anyone who uses your great advice about using a color wheel should look up an artists wheel instead. Still, great video! 😘
