  • This week, we’re testing out different burr sets available for the Varia VS3 Grinder, 2nd generation.
We were lucky enough to have the chance to try out multiple different variants, and we measured their performance when grinding the same coffee on the same grind setting multiple times. Below, you can see the average particle size distribution for each burr set we used:
    Hypernova Iridescent Burr Set - D50= 798
    Hypernova Ultra Burr Set - D50 = 796
    Supernova Burr Set - D50 = 821
We found the Hypernova Iridescent to best fit the April Brewer, and in this video we show you our recommended recipe when using this grinder along side our brewing equipment.
Thank you to BeanBros for providing the VS3 and burr sets we tested in this video. If you are curious about learning more about this grinder, you can find more information here: beanbros.dk/en...

I would like to see an indepth review, including blind taste testing, that compares Hypernova Ultra to Hypernova to a control grinder. The control grinder should be a popular and well known grinder. I want to buy either a HNU or HN burr upgrade for VS3G2, but first I need to see performance testing & review.

Thank you for watching. We are sure Lance or James have made something similar on their channels. They are more extensive on their reviews.

Video looked, and sounded good, but it seemed the presenter wasn't familiar enough with the Varia grinder, and there wasn't a sufficient description of the various coffee notes that the new burrs produced, especially from the other tasters.
Also, it wasn't clear, to me, whether or not you were suggesting adjusting the grinder with or without beans while the grinder was running.
Last, I am new to electric grinders - used hand grinders for years with my moka pot - and currently using an inexpensive electric Oster / Mr Coffee, but in the dozens and dozens of electric grinder reviews / tutorials that I've watched in the last few months, you are the first person that I recall mentioning that you must adjust the grind size while the grinder is running. So that's very interesting to me.

We only aim to show the compatibility between the grinder and the April Brewer. More in-depth reviews you can easily find elsewhere on TH-cam.

My varia gen 1 just died, so i asked for a gen 2 replacement… and it died in a week, after stalling of and on for the week. 😢

That's a challenge. Perhaps, look into Timemore Sculptor or the Option-o mini.

I’m saving for a weber hg-2, tired of electric for now, back to the hand grinder until then.

Do you really need to turn on the grinder in order to change grind size? I never did that...

    • @coffeewithapril
      @coffeewithapril  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That's pretty much standard practice on all electrical grinders.

    • @mansonitefirefox

Many grinder manufacturers specifically tell you to never adjust the grind setting whilst it is on.
If you go tighter you could smash the burs together and end your grinder.
The only reason you would turn the grinder on to change the grind size would be if you were going smaller in grind you might catch a bean you didn't know was in there.
But catching a bean is nothing compared to the burs smashing into each other.
