    One problematic credit card payment history did not cause his credit score to dip to 539. He's so dishonest. He's not paying the half he still owes on that house and he never will. He's always bailed out and taken care of. The wife is no better. She's home all day but cant cook, so all this money is flying out the door on fast food. This is what spoiled, rich people look like. This guy makes my head hurt.

      I've neither had nor would want a bean from my family - paid for my own school and my own housing, and have never had any kind of handout, and I'm in an infinitely better financial position than he is.

      Just for grins and giggles at the grocery store yesterday I priced some organic milk compared to just regular milk. The organic milk was $6.29 for a HALF gallon; regular milk was $2.29 for a half gallon. I wanted to buy some to see what it tastes like. He likely won't take ANY advice let alone KID advice. I have never understood why anyone would need to ask for financial advice; just have more coming in than going out.

    Four kids and volunteered to be laid off? I would have been mentioning my kids to help keep my job for at least another 15-20 years. I just finished a railroad career and I’m so thankful I had kids because feeding them was the motivation. I never even thought of quitting, I was grateful

      He received a lump sum of 70K + 8 weeks paid notice period. So in theory he had 9 months of runway to find a job, no mortgage to pay and he didn’t like his job.
      This is honestly the best way/time to exit the company for him.

    Holy balls, this was probably the most complex financial situation in awhile, my head hurts. It literally made me chuckle when he's like "I voluntarily chose to be laid off because I have a cousin with a company offering me a Director position with more pay, except I voluntarily chose to be laid off before finding out I'm not qualified, so I'm going to be a real estate agent instead with no guaranteed income."
    And you know when it comes to layoffs, CEOs tend to layoff to keep their bonuses and salaries the same, so stop acting like it's a hard choice for them.

In 2020 we laid off 10% justifying the margins and future of the company, then come to find out in 2021 the CEO's salary doubled. They literally could have kept 5-10 senior software engineer jobs, but nope decided the CEO's compensation is more important.

    The fact that his wife thinks that her parents were greedy and selfish and deprived her as a child just because they wouldn’t give her horseback riding lessons but they renovated the house and bought some rosebushes instead makes me realize that these two deserve each other 🙄 two immature self-centered spoiled children who never grew up.       😂 my dream as a child was to take ballet. My mom bought me tap shoes (I think kohls) and I admit, I was upset…but I used those tap shoes for years!! Never had classes so I was awful but she never told me to be quiet while I was tapping awfully in the kitchen lmao. People need to learn to appreciate what parents CAN do for them. Also, the best part of being an adult? You can buy yourself horseback riding lessons.

    It really takes a village. he's mentioned so many people who has bailed him out, offered jobs, taken out loans. And top of that mentioned his wife came from an affluent company - she got horseback riding class but not gymnastics. Literally listing out the most expensive after school activities. The only reason him and his wife isn't in a terrible situation is because of all the help they're getting. Very lucky people

    You seem to have forgotten to remind him that those 401k loan terms usually require immediate re-payment upon the loss of employment. Failing to repay causes them to report the outstanding amount as a non-qualified distribution which is subject to tax penalty if you are below retirement age.

    His grandpa financed some huge payments in his life (college car, HOUSE) and he still messed his finances up. I feel sad for him and his family. The kids, no matter how they try to hide it, will feel their parents stress. I willingly quit my extracurriculars when I was a kid because of my parent's finances. Oh, and I was homeschooled by a Christian family too -- those moms were obsessed with "allergies" and "whole milk." I can guarantee they do not need that expensive, likely unpasteurized milk.

      I was homeschooled by a cult Christian family who did the raw unpasteurized whole milk co-op thing, my mom legit drove hours away to get to the farm and spent so much money on milk when we were struggling financially with a bunch of kids.       It blows my mind as well. Doesn't seem like a good deal for anyone but DD. I was a pizza delivery guy in the late 90s, I averaged about $10/hr while the company only charged $1 for delivery and that chain is still around today. Seems like now days it's $5+ for delivery without tip and the drivers are lucky to make that much (adjusted for inflation) in most areas.

    As a mom of 3, I want to share with this guest that he can't buy away guilt from missing his kids by buying them fast food. They want his time and attention. So many free fun family things they can do. I hate when people use kids as an excuses for BS spending. This is why therapy, as Caleb always suggests, is crucial. Guests need to understand the emotions and fears behind the spending. Parents can't be afraid to have deep and really difficult conversations to get to the heart of the real issue. That'll be a gift to your kids more than any happy meal❤

    Getting out of the house to do stuff with his kids does NOT have to cost money!! My dad was very poor when I was a kid and he was homeless and sometimes lived at camp sites for weeks on end or his car I saw him only on Sundays. Sometimes we went to the mall but when money got extra tight we played tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, with equipment that was years old and got a low cost lunch. Taking your kids out does not mean these fancy Brunswick zones, batting cages, expensive dinners and movies etc that can cost hundreds of dollars for a few hours. Your kids don't care what they are doing as long as it's with their Dad!! They care WHO they are with not WHAT they are doing.

    I think a big thing you missed here is when he becomes a RE agent, he is going to have to start paying his own health insurance for a family of 6. I'm sure his company paid a decent portion of his health insurance. It wont be cheap for a good plan. I hope this guy has life insurance as well. He seems like a nice guy, but 4 kids, 1 income. If he croaks, he is leaving his family in a terrible spot.

      I've known more parents than I should who are Exactly like this. Because I'm a woman, they also used to derive great joy at any chance to throw around the discussion-ending "dig" that I don't know anything about X bc I don't have kids. They believed that it hurt me very deeply. (It didn't. But knowing they enjoyed deliberately hurting my feelings just to feel superior did.)
      Then through lots of therapy, I came to understand that Every Single Person who ever did this is some variety of Narcissist/Bully.

    As an ex over giver I loved Caleb’s spiel about giving. You can only give when you are good financially & thriving, until then you need to take care of yourself first.
    I was living with my parents bc I couldn’t afford to move out helping “friends” and bummy bfs financially wondering why I couldn’t get ahead. I stopped giving and all of a sudden I wasn’t financially drowning anymore. 😂

      Any healthy church would emphasize giving of your “time, gifts, talents and possessions” I have had many seasons in life when what I had to offer was my self, not money- outside of a few dollars. That is how you serve, with what you have. I hope he reads this. That being said, $1,800 for “wants” a month is not a hard spot. So yeah, give money if that’s easier than time. Just don’t act like your broke while you’re doing it.

    Saying that covenant eyes is a VPN is crazyyyyy it's literally spyware that hyper-christians use to stay accountable to their partner/church leader/family because they've been either watching too much p*rn or doing something else "unchristian" online. Dude is incredibly adept at obfuscating the truth, he actually kinda suits being a real estate agent, but would likely excel as a politician.

    I grew up with 8 siblings on a fairly low income. That doesn't make me a crazy spender. It's the opposite. I want to hold onto every spare penny. Having a cushion to fall back on brings peace and security. He's using his parents as an excuse. Don't excuse bad choices, own it and learn from it.

      Same I’m the oldest of 7. We constantly were living in our van and many times had to skip meals. Now that my husband and I make over $220k I still can’t even spend a penny. I wear men’s tshirts with holes in it and shoes with my sole falling off. I might get some new shoes when our house is paid off 😂

    This needs a rewatch. I think there's a lot of bad stuff going on here. How he speaks of his wife, the covenant eyes subscription, his emergency lawyer situation, all on top of how many times he contradicts himself. Probably the worse situation by far. I cannot see how this doesn't end in an absolute disaster for this family.

      I don’t know why everybody thinks the covenant eyes thing is such a red flag more than it is kinda funny. They’re super Christian and that app explicitly markets to Christians trying to avoid watching porn. That doesn’t mean it’s some big sign of disaster (compared to the several other signs of disaster that are actually here, namely the wife refusing to show up).

    He puts a lot of blame on his wife. When Caleb suggests they should be in couples therapy he says "I agree leah, let's do it" but then later says he can't bring himself to spend money on it. And then the thing with the accounts "money is put into her account to be spent, money put in my account can be saved" he kind of pins it on his wife that she spends a lot on crap, but he controls the finances and saves nothing.

      Erm, you're seeing all those comments with the most negative meanings... and I think a more generous view can be taken
      -"I agree let's do it" and "I struggle with spending money on therapy" can both be true at the same time, human beings are complicated creatures with conflicting urges.
      -"money in her account to be spent, in my account can be saved" is something they could have decided as a couple, it might not say anything about their individual habits. Like I for example decide to role-divide with my own wife as to how our accounts are to be used in our household, so I can totally see this kind of split happening for me as a household decision.
      -He's not averse to blaming himself, but I don't think he really cares about who is to blame anyways, focusing on blame isn't Christian.

      If your home is run like that (SAHM is the CFO, working dad), they still need to have monthly meetings, like a business meeting, to go over the state of finances, the budget, and figure out whether leaks exist and plan to plug them.

      I'm a sahm and my husband takes care of the budget, bills and filing. I am only involved as much or as little I have to will to do. But we have MANY small children so I don't do much of anything more than child care, cooking cleaning and grocery shopping because it isn't possible. In this point in our life. Right now I'm watching with an earbud at my 3 yo's sickbed. This is my me time lol

    The excuses for having to go out to eat constantly always make me laugh. I spent $25 at Target a few years ago and got my kids a thermos each. If we are out of the house during lunch or dinner time, I warm up left overs and they eat from their thermos. I have a small cooler bag that I put a salad in for me and whatever my husband wants. Now that it's summer we are at the pool alot. We bring food and drinks there too. Going out to eat 4-5 times for our family of 4 a month is probably the same as what I spend on groceries for the entire month.

    I love content like this that are about seemingly put-together working professionals and their financial mistakes. I think its way more interesting and relatable than the ones with young 21 year olds who are drifting around aimlessly or the ones with people who don't have the capacity to make good financial decisions in the first place. Like yeah, literally everything they do is wrong, but I wasn't thinking of buying all of my fourth cousins a car with a credit score of 362 in the first place, so I'm not learning very much.
    But guys like this who everyone expects to have their shit together, and actually have the capacity to have their shit together, but absolutely do not due to mostly their own decisions are just fascinating to watch and learn from.

      MEEHHHH I kinda agree with this, mostly feel like these are mistakes that anyone in his position who didn't get loans would NOT make cause they have common knowledge. This individual seems to lack expertise in this area. I reckon a 21 year old who sucks at making financial decisions is the equivalent to this guy, but they don't have grandparents who can bail them out or give them money. I've been the broke teen, and now I'm a well established individual on my way to a 6 figure salary not in debt, (not including my house which will be mine soon).
      So I agree with you, but honestly this is more of a niche video. BUT, not something I learned as much from as the other videos which include broke young folks or people carrying others expenses.

      To be fair, being laid off was a massive financial win for this guy. He gets two more months to work plus a $10k bonus for staying, then he gets a full five months severance and nearly full benefits for five months. He has enough time once his job ends to spend three months trying to make real estate work and then if that fails he STILL has two more months to find another tech job before he even spends a day not getting paid or having healthcare. If he just takes a normal job in mid May he’s walking away with like $50,000 in free cash. Being laid off can be a big win.

    I wasn't financially free until my 40’s and I’m still in my 40’s, bought my third house already, earn on a monthly through passive income and got 4 out of 5 goals, just hope it encourages someone that it doesn’t matter if you don’t have any of them right now, you can start TODAY regardless your age INVEST and change your future!     It doesn't matter if you leave voluntarily or you are terminated. You have to pay back the 401(k) loan in full. Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) passed in 2017, 401(k) loan borrowers have until the due date of your tax return to pay it back. Prior to this, loan borrowers had 60 days to pay it back.

    Caleb is spot on with the milk thing. We have 3 kids and we do not drink milk at all. Almond milk if we need anything for cereal but other than that we get all the calcium and protein from other sources.

      It may be connected to their church community...which he seems to be donating $12k a year. They didn't mention extras like uniforms or supply fees. Certainly a large chunk of their finances but also potentially important to their family values. (also not discussed were the kids ages and how much it will cost when the others start schooling since it seemed like 2/4 so far). Fully homeschooling does not have to be expensive but given the patterns presented they would probably spend that much or more on materials, curriculum and tutoring/classes.

      We homeschool our kids but use a program for materials, lesson plans, and grading. This enables them to have a real transcript if they ever want to go to High School / College. Our kids are little still and only 2 are in school, but that costs about $2k per year. Homeschooling isn't really free.

    The only part I find frustrating is someone who doesn’t even pay rent or their own mortgage is passionate about Real Estate and “ready” to get into it… I really feel like you need to be in a financial position where you are thriving before you start taking out investment property loans, as you’re risking the homes of the people who are renting from you.

    I’m confused. They pay for a private school that is hybrid and only two days a week with homeschool the other days. What’s the point of paying for two days a week? Maybe I misunderstood.
    Also, the kids are eating at Chick-Fil-A, McDonald’s, and Taco Bell but he’s worried about the quality of their milk. Milk isn’t even necessary because protein and calcium can be gotten elsewhere.

      Going to school part time seems to be a lot more common these days. My nephew does that. Makes sense to me, he gets the social interaction and fundamentals covered, but can focus on more individual stuff at home than could in large group setting

      My brother did this! I think it’s a great option. He got the social interaction and some structure, and then my mom (a very strict asian tiger parent) got to make sure he was staying on top of his education. It also allowed him more time for sports and exploration while he was home.
      I was full time homeschooled, and while I did get a very rigorous education (better than my brother’s), I would have loved more social time and getting a break from my strict mom.

      Especially when the Bible has a ton on financial stewardship in the old and new testaments. God specifically lays out how to not sin with money, but he's poorly studied on the Bible, or he just wants an excuse.

      Unfortunately, you are correct. He sounds extremely manipulative here. I don't doubt he fails as a husband spiritually also. He already has awful financial stewardship. You know the thing we have like 6 books of the Bible on it and countless Bible studies on it for just about every denomination. Its an unfortunate and disappointing part of my religious community.

    I got into real estate at 24 (27 now). I had $30k and no family when I switched to it. It took me 3 mo’s to sell a house. You need that emergency fund to actually give it a chance.

    My mom used to go to the ATM every weekend to take out cash for that week's spending. She took out a particular amount. A set amount was for my dad to spend on like whatever he wanted/needed. And a larger chunk was for my mom because it was her whatever money and the grocery money for that week. Bills and shared expenses all that came out of checking. The whatever money was theirs to do literally whatever. Spend on general nonsense or stash it and save up to buy more expensive nonsense. It's a pretty good system imo. Especially for people who aren't credit card people.
