    Wonderful Barry and Rea. So many lessons for us and our horses. It is indeed a privilege to spend this time with you. I'm so encouraged to try my mare in a rubber bit and even without blinkers.!! I only wish I could travel to UK with my horse to walk the roads of your beautiful villages🙂.Thank you XX

    Barry, The best advertisement for your training is this little gray Rosie enjoying her exercise and all the interesting sights, sounds and experiences you are giving her. She is indeed safe, happy and cheerful and just the kind of pony I'd like to spend a day with.
    I once had a Shetland mare that had been so well trained that she would keep the wheels of our cart out of ruts - even when there was a child on the other end of the reins. She had been a family's 'show pony' but when her whole human family was killed in a car accident caused by an intoxicated driver, we gave "Powder-Nose" and her new filly foal a home and they spent the rest of their lives with us.
    The pony taught me to drive. If my instructions to her weren't clear enough, she would just stand where she was until I finally guessed what she was waiting for - and did it. Then she would happily do as she was told. Since her original training had been excellent, I finally looked fairly competent in the cart. I had been well-trained to care for and ride horses when I was a child, but I learned how to drive from our little gray mare.

    I have owned 3 driving horses. Everyone I drove with open bridles. Now I am breaking my young horse into harness, also with an open bridle. Here in Norway, it is very common to drive horses in open bridles :)

May there be many more videos to come. Listening to Barry is like being with an old friend you can depend on for kindness and wisdom.

    Honestly, the BEST thing I learned from you and that I taught my horse with your direction, was to stand and stay there until directed otherwise.

    So, the horse learns on her own that disobedience leads to walking into the bit instead of learning that you have the strength to force her actions. A wiser, happier horse results. One that knows to rely on your decisions.

    Any driving horse, including track horses, should stand quietly alone while being harnessed and hooked up. Then they should stand till asked to walk off. Basic stuff but you'd be surprised how many horses don't know this.

    barryhook2 You're my great granda come back. I swear!! He had the same philosophy as you. Each horse is an individual, you can NOT make cookie cutter children any more than you can make cookie cutter horses. Each is different, each learns at a different pace. Some, it comes very easy to, and others not so much. Many Blessings to everyone there and please Remain Safe. From Ontario, Canada, Jenn.

    • @cattymajiv

      Hi Jennifer! I see you all over horse TH-cam! Even though this comment of yours is 3 years old, I thought I would use it to congratulate you on the successful birth of all of your foals over Christmas time. I saw you comment on it somewhere else, maybe a few times, but at the time I wasn't able to get a reply to you.
      It must be very happy days at your place with all those sweet babies and their mamas, although all those births at once must have been quite a challenge for you! I hope you had help from others, and got enough sleep, and also that your Christmas and New Years were lovely, with lots of family and friends.
      I don't always bother you when I see you around, but I did want to say how happy I am about your new babies.
      I'm an old lady who is so sad to not have ever gotten my small acreage and my own horses, but I spend as much time around them as possible, and try to keep learning anyway. I'm originally from Winnipeg, lived in Ottawa, and am stuck in Edmonton for now. But I pray it's not for too much longer. I hope to return to my dear friends in Winnipeg, or to move to paradise in any part of BC except the Vancouver area.
      Maybe some day I can go on a trek and visit a few of the horse TH-camrs very briefly, IF luck were with me and 1 or 2 of them happened to have a hour or 2 to spare for a new friend. I'd also love to get to see my old friends from Ottawa, who are now spread out in Ontario. While there, your farm is also a place I'd like to see, and I'd be so honored to meet you, but for the forseeable future, it's only a dream. A very nice dream though, that keeps me going!
      I like to imagine that some day somebody would allow me to visit somewhat regularly, and pitch in with the work. I just bought a car, finally, so my next step will be to see if I can volunteer for the Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program at a local barn. If I can, I will be over the moon with joy!
      I hope all of your family are well, and of course your beautiful horses, and any other animals you might have have. I hope as well that you have a wonderful time raising your sweet little ones, and I wish you all the best in 2024! Take care Jennifer!
      From Barb in Edmonton.
      ❤🐴🐎🐴❤
      Edit: No need to reply. Just thought I'd say hello.

    Blinkers....just like most other horse things, its always been done that way.
    Or is it?
    Egyptian tomb paintings and discoveries, as well as Roman.......some do, and some don't.
    Maybe like us these day, some people just didn't see the need or it was a handy too for those horses that need abit of focus.
    Just as in racing today......

    Might have missed the bit where you explained why you chose to drive this one in an open bridle? Or do they all go in an open bridle towards the end of training?

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Rosie is a ride and drive - if you watch in future films you'll see her riding in heavy traffic. We used an open bridle when driving with her to get her used to the traffic in an open bridle to help her when she is ridden out in one.

    • @63Malda
      @63Malda 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@barryhook2 So it's not common for driving horses to also be riding horses? My horse is a riding horse, we started driving training when she was 11 years old. My trainer opted for an open bridle because she's been a riding horse for so long.

    • @TheBlackelpie
      @TheBlackelpie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course- thanks :)

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No, we find it's quite the opposite in our line of work! Apart from the miniatures, most horses we train either are or will end up as ride and drive horses. We train horses for Ride & Drive if asked to and take many much-loved, can't-part-with, outgrown children's ponies to give them a new job in the family. We do not train previously ridden horses any differently to non-ridden horses as a rule, we always work with the horse as an individual.

    • @TheBlackelpie
      @TheBlackelpie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well I feel better about not getting a 'proper' driving bridle for my standardbred- I just switch the reins on the riding bridle. His previous owners told me that blinkers are 'vital' to safety, saying the horse will never shy in a direction he cant see. But I'm coming to the belief that what is vital is lots of good training. Btw I'd love to know how you make the rubber bits...

  • @debtompkins5363
    @debtompkins5363 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've a;ways preferred an open bridle, My theory is better to see and understand what is coming than imagine what monster is making that noise. I wouldn't want to be asked to work with most of my vision blocked, so why would I ask another being to do it....

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's very fair enough! We often try both and see which the individual horse prefers.
