    Good job, Slade. The only thing I do differently is let the oil drip until it stops on the fill hole. Maybe two or three minutes, then I screw the fill plug back in. I also use a pump, cause my thumbs are weak from 44 years in the salt mines, lol.
    By the way, don’t discount some of the new oils available today. I use Redline MT-90, GL4 (fully synthetic). It doesn’t cost that much more, especially considering how you don’t have to change it very often. This Redline stuff is so much better than the old, regular stuff.
    You know how on cold mornings, before the transmission gets nice and warm from driving, you get that slight gear clash, or sluggishness when changing gears? This Redline is so smooth at any temperature, it completely eliminates that cold-weather sluggishness. When warm, it also shifts nice and smooth.
    Just a little tip, you might want to consider next time.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you’re definitely right, it’s best to let the fill plug drip for a little bit. I do agree on that. 100%
      Funny you brought that up, I had an older BMW for a little while, geez I miss that car. Anyhow, I ran red line in the rear end, and also the transmission.
      I noticed the rear and felt smoother, I know that sounds odd but it really did.
      I didn’t know they made it in a GL4! I’m really glad you brought that up because I’m gonna look into it.
      My buddy ran synthetic in his beetle and swore that it shifted nice and smooth.
      I always get freaked out by synthetics in my older cars. But that’s because my brains older LOL
      Yes when it is cold out which we get our share of that here in Northeast, it gets strange and put your drive in it forever.

      Honestly that sounds like it could be the synchronizers.
      I would try to make adjustments first with the shifter itself, and then check your coupler where the shifting tube connects to the transmission.

    This is one job I've never I've thought about doing but " Never" have never done. That has to be a nightmare with the CV joint in?. Once your done do you need to drive it a little bit and re- check? Roughly how much fluid us needed to do the job? I see you have the reverse back up switch on the side. I need to hook mine up also. As always another well done video. You will never know how many it will help out in the future. I'm jelous of this generation. We didn't have TH-cam. We had a Bentley manual and a best friend on a weekend. Well , maybe we had it better, LOL.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it’s a little more difficult with the CV joint in the way, but you can always use those little pump handles that go inside the bottle. It truly makes it a lot easier I could not find mine.
      On an average they hold between 6-7 pints.
      On that side, the driver side that’s actually a neutral safety switch.
      The reverse light switches on the opposite side.
      Yes I think we had a better back in the day that is my opinion. We had a manual, and had to figure things out. TH-cam is very convenient I must admit, brother, thank you for always supporting me and being there for me.

    Hey Slade, I have a transmission question for you. I have a '73 super beetle and it doesn't like to stay in reverse. If I have to back up, I have to hold it in reverse. If I don't hold it, it pops out when I release the clutch. Where would that problems root be?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly that’s a common problem. So you will definitely need to have it rebuilt, or buy a rebuilt one online. What happens, is the reverse gear teeth, start rounding out. They don’t keep their sharp edge after many years of use. Which keeps them from staying in gear. I hope this was helpful.
