Kozani | The largest "meadow" of photovoltaics in Greece
The new 225 MW photovoltaic park of Lightsource bp in Kozani is expected to be connected to the electricity system in the summer of 2023. The park is not a single space but is built on grassy areas that extend across the communities of Mavrodendrio, Kalamia and Koila Kozani.
The photovoltaic parks will be connected to a privately owned transformer of 500 MW and 400 KV which will be located between Kalamia and Koila and according to the project manager Thanasis Xeno it will "have the possibility of expansion up to 1500 MW" in order to "clip" other projects of the company or other energy companies.
At the moment it employs about 220 workers, scientific staff and craftsmen. According to the company Lightsource bp, with the completion of the project, the employees who will be employed will not exceed 50, mainly in the areas of guarding the facilities and cleaning the park.
In the heart of the region of Western Macedonia in Kozani is the largest double-sided photovoltaic park in Greece and one of the largest in Europe. An investment of 130 million euros with very significant environmental benefits and the goal of contributing to the reduction of the carbon footprint at the local and national level and therefore to combating climate change.
The park in question extends over a vast mountainous area of ​​4,500 hectares at an altitude between 920 and 1,050 meters just after the village of Livera and is capable of generating electricity with a total power of 120MW. In simple words, it can produce energy for 75,000 households, exceeding the population of western Macedonia, producing more than 300,000 MWh/Year. This is a project that will cover huge energy needs and will contribute to saving the environment, as it rids the planet of 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide.
