Fun Fact: The Limp Bizkit Faith Cover was the song that got them their breakthrough. So for better or worse (In your case the latter) the song made them big.
Another awful cover: Gene Simmons cover of the Prodigy's Firestarter. It comes with an even worse music video that is just him standing around posing and smirking with half-naked women. It's also worth nothing, this was released back in 2004 when he was in his 50s.
Death covering Painkiller by Priest was awesome though!!!! Surely you can let that one slide, right? That MuthaFKR shreds!!! And HBD you metal psycho!!! I meant that as a compliment by the way.
Some of my least favorite covers: 1) Bring Me The Horizon - Eyeless 2) Periphery - One 3) Six Feet Under - basically every cover they’ve done 4) Motley Crue - Fight For Your Right To Party 5) Puddle of Mudd - About A Girl 6) Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes 7) William Shatner - Iron Man 8) Avenged Sevenfold - Flash of the Blade (I’m not sorry) 9) Overkill - Changes (Bobby Blitz cannot sing a legitimate ballad to save his life) 10) Bad Wolves - Zombie Also I’m a sucker for Fireball. But it has to be cold.
@@clayfoster8234If we are talking about Zombie by Cranberries then I am just gonna say it, the original song was already pretty awful but I haven't listened to the cover yet.
Hot take but faith is a sick cover. From the crappy guitar tone in the verses playing the major progression to then exploding into a hard af groove when durst screams the hook. The guitars legit go hard and the dirty grimey production helps this and same goes for the breakdown. Above all else its fun granted this is from someone who thinks the original song is beyond cringey and lame
I think covers are the best when a cover offers something the original does not, a reason to comeback and listen to it in addition to the original that also puts the band's own spin/flare on it or when the song plays well to the band's strengths. Some good examples are Judas Priest "Diamonds and Rust", Voivod "Astronomy Domine", Death "Painkiller", Unto Others "Hell is for Children" and "Pet Cemetery". You even said that in your Emperor retrospective that "Gypsy" was "fucking incredible" before I reminded you that it was a Mercyful Fate cover, ya sillybilly!
Johnny B Goode by Judas Priest. It should be on everyone’s list as one of the worst. Priest has done amazing jobs making covers into their own wether it be Diamonds and Rust, better by you better than me or Green Manalishi, Jonny B Goode needs to be erased from their discography
Spineshank's second album was actually pretty decent, but yeah, that cover was terrible. One that I do like, and I don't know if you ever heard it is the Atreyu cover of "Epic" by Faith No More. It was on their Papers Sails and a Lead Anchor album from 2007. happy early birthday!
@16:45 This is why I will always hate every cover that's attempted for Black Tears by Edge of Sanity. Every cover version of that song I've ever heard completely misses the point of its vulnerability by making it aggressive with growls/screams and heavy breakdowns. On a different note, one of the best covers ever, in my opinion, is Carpathian Forest's take on A Forest originally by The Cure. At the very least, it's a hell of a lot better than that terrible Behemoth version of the same song.
A couple of covers I do enjoy are KSE “Holy Diver” (I personally love that one more than the original) and COF “Hallow Be Thy Name” (original is still the best but this one is pretty good imo). Motörhead covering Enter Sandman I never enjoyed.
Your inclusion of In Flames version of Land of Confusion reminded me of the Disturbed cover of the same song from the Ten Thousand Fists album. Phil would *not" be proud
I'll list my favourites and least favourites My favourites: Death - Painkiller (I already love Death, but man chucks vocals are beyond incredible) Linkin park - Rolling in the deep Metallica - I am Evil (the only cover I like from them) Least favourites: Most of Megadeths covers especially the 80s Six Feet Under - TNT Every fucking metal Christmas covers! (I hate Christmas songs to begin with)
Happy early birthday, Robert/Melty! I didn’t know In Flames did a cover of that Genesis song. The only cover I know of is the Disturbed version. I will point to another In Flames cover that I think is worse: their cover of Nine Inch Nails’/Johnny Cash’s Hurt. Shrieking that chorus at the top of your lungs is *not it, bro*… 😑
Honestly I've erased that Van Canto cover from my memory for good, so thanks for bringing it back into my mind xD. I've seen them live at a festival simply because I was waiting for Sodom, who played right after, and my god I have never laughed and cringed so hard at a concert. As you said, it was incredibly goofy and just... a mess to listen to.
This video was great. I personally don't mind a cover song being in the same style as long as it compets with or improves upon the original in some compacity (whether it's by having a punchier production, heavier vocal style, etc.) But, the examples you used to explain why you think it's lame are very solid points, and the covers that are on this list definitely deserve to be there, because they are terrible.
I don't mind covers, but a majority are horrible or just copy the original so closely it makes you wonder why they bothered. None will beat Disturbed's Sound of Silence for horribleness though, mainly because the local rock station played it so often it became a running joke on their morning show.
Danzig's cover of You Are Always On My Mind held promise, but the album was bad when it finally arrived. Huge disappointment. Metal covers of pop songs are usually bad because the sense of melody is totally different, and even if they nail the melody, they get the vocal inflections wrong when singing the lyrics etc.
Most excellent episode. I dont mind covers but there's quite a lot of wretched ones. I can't stand Megadeth and Motley Crue's version of Anarchy in the UK.
Mother of god, hearing that name Spineshank again. What a nostalgia bomb, used to listen to them and Stabbing Westward quite a bit, back in the day. Hadn't thought about either of those bands in a long time, weird thing to remember. That cover was... odd to me.
Even an idiot would know not to cover "First We Take Manhattan" by Leonard Cohen, but Sirenia didn't have any idiots nearby to advise them. Dishonorable mention: "No Time To Cry" (Sisters of Mercy) by Cradle of Filth
I’m pretty sure I said it from my other channel but Shine downs cover of the song “simple man” by Lynyard Skynyrd is horrible. Someone tell that guy he cannot sing.. at all.
TBH Six Feet Under cover of Frayed Ends Of Sanity is at least funny. Whenever he goes on the last verse: "Hear them calling EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" I always burst into laughter.
There's a lot of great Powerwolf covers by bands like Epica, Eluveite, and Amaranthe. Powerwolf's cover of Running Wild's Conquistadores is also fantastic.
Bro I am sorry but you should've put Death's Painkiller here, yeah I know that cover literally has it's own fanbase but as a Judas Priest enjoyer, I just hate that cover a lot. Mainly because of Chuck Schuldiner's 14yo high-school girl impression and (worst of all) the solo, yep, I absolutely hate the solo, it sounds absolutely nothing like the original and it was just bad.
First thing before all else...happy belated birthday, and second I just wanted to mention (since you can't put every bad cover song in the video) that there was every Disturbed cover that I could think of, Shout, Land of Confusion and especially that dreadful The Sounds of Silence. The Horrid Megadeth cover of Anarchy of the UK and the super cringe of Children of Bodom cover of Oops, I did it again, as if anyone wanted to hear a Brittney Spears cover
Celtic Frost covering 'Mexican Radio' AND choosing to start their otherwise seminal avantgarde metal album 'Into the Pandemonium' with it, was probably not the world's most clever idea.. 🤗
I'll always dislike any cover of "The Sun Always Shines on TV" by A-ha, but the version by Atrocity was just horrendous. And on the subject of doing a cover for humor, or any song for humor, it should still be a good song regardless.
Fun video. I agree on the one's I've heard, with the possible exception of Ministry's Search & Destroy. Though it was not really good, it did sound like Ministry to me. What do you think of their Lay Lady Lay cover? I have grown to Really like it. I might try listening to Danzig's shitty covers because he's goofy already and I'm sort of a fan who likes to laugh at him.
Disturbed sound of silence they took a fantastic guitar ballad and maid it into a generic piano ballad, the point with the original is that it only becomes slightly more aggressive, but is still calm who can you scream the sound of silence, I like the cover some one maid of disturbed virson more
Cover songs can be hit or miss, but are often misses. I also just don't like the idea of covering classic song when the original works just fine. I prefer ones thst put a twist on it such as Leviathan by Ignea
I haven’t heard 99.9% of these covers, and I am blessed for that. There were quite a few entries that had me making awful faces just from the artist and title alone!
Never heard Spineshank's cover of WMGGW, but New Disease still slaps, as generic as it is. Don't know if anything else they did is any good. I haven't heard any of it
I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one that hates cover songs, there's always a 50/50 chance that you could get a good cover song or a *really* poorly done cover song.
Was gonna post this under your fave covers but I feel like this example would go better here. So you mention all those "novelty" covers like and metalcore/screamo is EVEN more guilty of this. But one that I actually really LOVED was The Devil Wears Prada doing a cover of "Still Fly" by Big Tymers....fuckin hear me out ok....put down the pitchfork. It was just really fuckin fun ok, they did the metalcore riffage and even though it was totally stereotypical I love the fact they added a breakdown which the lyrics gave them a perfect excuse to put there "then I heard the boom from the amplifiers" LOL I fall for the novelty tricks from time to time ok there I admitted it
William Shatner - Stripped, Raped , and Strangled William Shatner - Hallowed Be Thy Name Garth Brooks - Immigrant Song ( acoustic) - Master of Puppets ( acoustic and Honky tonk piano )
William Shatner's music occupies a territory of 'so bad its kinda funny', like his weird spoken word style meshed with rock and jazz aesthetics is just so fuckin' dumb and corny it cracks me up
@@themetalmeltdownofficial the music video I think really actually makes the cover better. Cuz like the disturbed mascot going after all the cigar smoking billionaires or something. LOL
@@themetalmeltdownofficial Just listened t o the In Flames version and I just gotta say....what the FUCK..? The increased speed did NOT add to the urgency whatsoever. And it kinda focused on being more aggressive when I feel like the track also needs that sense of desperation and pain coupled with it and they just ain't got it there
I think you forgot Last year’s christmas compilation you destroyed with all your hatred boiling through my screen😂 All I Want for Christmas is You sung by Tim Owens🤣🤣🤣 Oh the horror!
I didn’t even make it through the first ten seconds of this video, but judging from the comments, I totally agree with the sentiment. Metal covers of non-metal songs are almost always an embarrassing joke. Realm’s cover of “Eleanor Rigby” ruins an otherwise outstanding album. I could probably list dozens of others, because every fucking thrash band did it in the 80s. Write a song about nuclear war, write a song about the PMRC, write a song about the environment, and butcher a classic song as a joke. 🙄
I still say the worst covers I have heard are a toss-up between Holy Diver by Killswitch Engage or Wasted Years by Devildriver. Also honorable mention, Another Brick in the Wall by Korn.
In what my opinion is an amazing cover the transylvania mutiilation cover by black metal project mäleficentt vocals sold me even has an aaskereia like howl at the end
I dig Tallah but that's a haaard pass. Like I said, covering viral songs is ALWAYS a bad idea. And this particular viral song is already super annoying.
Godhead covering Eleanor Rigby is something that is uniquely bad and I am disappointed it didn't make it onto the list. Really low quality industrial cover of a classic Beatles tune.
Van Halen - You're No Good Six Feet Under - Rock n Roll Ain't Noise Pollution Rottrevore - Shadow Dancing Incantation - Scream Bloody Gore Mortician - S.C.U.M Poison - Your Mama Can't Dance Dream Theater - Billy Jean Garth Brooks - Master of Puppets
I always liked G’n’Rs Spaghetti Incident, and Children Of Bodem have done some decent covers. However there are some songs that are perfect in there original versions such as earlier Iron Maiden, Metallica and Judas Priest songs that should never be touched. In the words of Jack Black it would defile the metal
The video and comments have covered (no pun intended) pretty much everything I'd list, so I'll say what my favorite cover is instead. Blind Guardian's cover of "Don't Talk to Strangers" by Dio is incredible. I almost like it more than the original.
There's one cover I enjoy. Sea of treachery- misery business. It's just an early deathcore cover that just has fun with the original Paramore cover. I'm a huge fan of kublai khan tx but they do a cover of "imagine" by the beetles called a brotherhood of man. Doesn't really go anywhere. And I remember hearing it for the first time and hating it.
I hate triviums Master of Puppets, they change nothing about it and at that point i'd rather just hear the original. I have mixed feelings about anthrax's carry in wayward son and black math. They are good but I think they could've gone farther with them One band that does actually good covers is thou. Their nirvana cover album is sick. Imperial Triumphant has great covers as well. They barely sound like the originals (in a good way) Hakok's eye of the beholder is surprisingly really good as well.
What do you mean that there is no mention of Enjoy the Silence covered by The Faceless!?!? That shit is just fucking awful. In a lighter note, Tourette’s by Nirvana but covered by Impaled is amazing
The only exception I like is Yngwie Malmsteen’s cover is MJ’s Beat It, Korn’s cover of Another Brick In The Wall, and Bring Me The Horizon’s cover of Slipknot’s Eyeless
Can't say i outright dislike any metal covers tbh. But i will say that FFDP's cover of Bad Company doesn't exactly hold up to the original. Also I love most of Disturbed's covers. Especially their covers of Shout and Land of Confusion. Those songs fucking slap.
Here are my worst rock and metal cover songs 1. MGK- aerials by system of a down 2. Puddle of mudd- about a girl by nirvana 3. Falling in reverse- gangsta paradise by coolio (yes i know its not a rock and metal song, but oh my god ronnie radke somehow made this song suck) 4. Gene simmons- Firestarter by the prodigy 5. Five finger death punch- gone away by the offspring 6. Motley crue- fight for your right to party by the beastie boys 7. Celine dion and Anastasia- shook me all night long by acdc (yes i know its a bunch of pop stars covering a rock classic, but i am still going to put this, on this the list) 8. That otep cover album in its entirety 9. graveyard classics 2 by six feet under (my condolences to acdc)
Not really a fan of metal covers myself, but the ones that usually tend to be good are often when non-metal songs are being covered. Judas Priest are easily the best in this regard (Green Manalishi, Diamonds and Rust, Better by You, Better Than Me). I also really like Firewind's cover of Maniac and Ascension's cover of Listen To Your Heart.
Behind Blue Eyes is far worse than Faith imo
Ehhh, again that song mostly just bores me where as 'Faith' annoys me.

But one that I actually really LOVED was The Devil Wears Prada doing a cover of "Still Fly" by Big Tymers....fuckin hear me out ok....put down the pitchfork. It was just really fuckin fun ok, they did the metalcore riffage and even though it was totally stereotypical I love the fact they added a breakdown which the lyrics gave them a perfect excuse to put there "then I heard the boom from the amplifiers" LOL I fall for the novelty tricks from time to time ok there I admitted it
William Shatner - Stripped, Raped , and Strangled
William Shatner - Hallowed Be Thy Name
Garth Brooks - Immigrant Song ( acoustic)
- Master of Puppets ( acoustic and Honky tonk piano )
William Shatner's music occupies a territory of 'so bad its kinda funny', like his weird spoken word style meshed with rock and jazz aesthetics is just so fuckin' dumb and corny it cracks me up
Bad Wolves' butt-rockification of "Zombie" by The Cranberries has gotta be among the worst
Indeed, I wasn't even a big fan of the original and still felt offended on behalf of the Cranberries lol.
oh shit but did you like the Land of Confusion cover that Disturbed did?
Its alright, definitely better than the In Flame's version lmao
OH MY FUCKING GOD YES
FUCK THAT SONG, FUCK THAT SONG TO HELL AND BACK
that's the first song I thought of
Motley Crue-fight for your right to party- just atrocious
My favorite metal cover is definitely Voivod's cover of Astronomy Domine from Pink Floyd
I think otep cover of pet was the worst cover on the godslayer personally
I still say the worst covers I have heard are a toss-up between Holy Diver by Killswitch Engage or Wasted Years by Devildriver. Also honorable mention, Another Brick in the Wall by Korn.
In what my opinion is an amazing cover the transylvania mutiilation cover by black metal project mäleficentt vocals sold me even has an aaskereia like howl at the end
Elvis Danzig is at the top of Shit Mountain for me... *THE HORROR!! THE HORROR!!...*
Justin Bonitz of Tallah made a much better cover of what does the fox say and worth a listen 😁
Van Halen - You're No Good
Six Feet Under - Rock n Roll Ain't Noise Pollution
Rottrevore - Shadow Dancing
Incantation - Scream Bloody Gore
Mortician - S.C.U.M
Poison - Your Mama Can't Dance
Dream Theater - Billy Jean
Garth Brooks - Master of Puppets
I always liked G’n’Rs Spaghetti Incident, and Children Of Bodem have done some decent covers. However there are some songs that are perfect in there original versions such as earlier Iron Maiden, Metallica and Judas Priest songs that should never be touched. In the words of Jack Black it would defile the metal
The video and comments have covered (no pun intended) pretty much everything I'd list, so I'll say what my favorite cover is instead.
Blind Guardian's cover of "Don't Talk to Strangers" by Dio is incredible. I almost like it more than the original.
Also I know who Spineshank are and I enjoy their music
I was listening to their debut album 2 years ago and think god i skipped it.
Their 2nd album is very good.
@nealcrabtree3647 Hell yeah that's the one it had the hits like New Disease and Synthetic.
They are good but I think they could've gone farther with them
One band that does actually good covers is thou. Their nirvana cover album is sick.
Imperial Triumphant has great covers as well. They barely sound like the originals (in a good way)
Hakok's eye of the beholder is surprisingly really good as well.
Trivium's cover sucks because of the vocals
disturbed's version of land of confusion is 100x times better than the in flames version
Maybe it's because Pink Floyd is my favorite band but Korn's cover of Another Brick In The Wall 1-3 is something I can't stand
What about that Christmas covers album from last year? 🎄 🎁 🤢 🤮
uggggh bah humbug
My birthday today.
EEEYYYY happy birthday bud
Here are my worst rock and metal cover songs
1. MGK- aerials by system of a down
2. Puddle of mudd- about a girl by nirvana
3. Falling in reverse- gangsta paradise by coolio (yes i know its not a rock and metal song, but oh my god ronnie radke somehow made this song suck)
4. Gene simmons- Firestarter by the prodigy
5. Five finger death punch- gone away by the offspring
6. Motley crue- fight for your right to party by the beastie boys
7. Celine dion and Anastasia- shook me all night long by acdc (yes i know its a bunch of pop stars covering a rock classic, but i am still going to put this, on this the list)
8. That otep cover album in its entirety
9. graveyard classics 2 by six feet under (my condolences to acdc)
I always forget that those songs are covers, Judas Priest nailed it
