Not a lot of people know this one: Serge Savard was fired from the Habs in the mid 90s for attempting to trade Patrick Roy to the Avs vs Owen Nolan and Stephane Fiset. Ronald Corey put down his veto, trade was aborted, and he fired Savard + coach Jacques Demers. Read that in Demers’ book.
To be honest, as a Devils fan, I don’t see the Taylor Hall (second) trade or the vast majority being bad. Hall is oft injured and was halfway through a contract year set to become a FA anyway and publicly stated he wanted to be on a contending team. The reason Shero was let go was because no one played to their ability this past season and that’s more a coaching issue than a roster management one and because Shero held on to Hynes way too long.
yeah and it is not like he had a lot of leverage. i can understand why people complain - the optics are very one sided - but it is not really a fair way to assess whether he had the instincts that you want in a GM. From what i heard he had done a lot to improve the system but it is not enough time to get a true assessment, especially when you have as much turnover in management as they have had
Sabres Owner, President, Coach, Assistant Coach, Equipment Manager, Team Doctor, Water Boy, Stick Boy and Star player. Jack Eichel has announced that he has fired the Sabres GM and appointed himself as the teams newest GM.
Thank you, ive been leading the charge for Stan Bowman to be fired and I have to point out to bandwagon fans that Stan didn't put those teams together and all he's done is trade away players to just bring them back after their talent has vanished, but wagoners love it cause it's a player they know
Trading for him wasn't a bad idea considering his talent at the time. But handing him a big contract despite his bad health was awful, especially since one of the conditions for resigning him was giving up that first.
As a Sabres fan, I don’t think Botteril was fired because of the trade, it’s because he didn’t want to blow up the front office, obviously, the trades didn’t help
He's totally wrong about the Sabres cap situation as well. They are poised to unload a ton of fluff and bring in the pieces they need if you look at cap friendly. They just have to forget the players that didn't work out.
@@joer8854 I am well aware that they can unload a lot of their current cap. However, that comes with some massive downfall which is depth. Because who do you lose? Obviously Dahlin will be a big price tag, Brandon Montour will be receiving a big raise, Sam Reinhart, Kahun, Olofsson who will be costly. Luckily Buffalo under the right management can strategically deal with their cap. But that "dealing" will come with loss of depth which will be a big issue
Player contracts aren't negotiated in a vacuum though. A cap freeze will definitely affect player contracts signed this season across the NHL. People keep thinking that a cap freeze affects the team not the players. The cap freeze will be in affect for well more than a year. Contracts are going to be harder to get and lower than expected.
@@RobTalksHockey they don't have much in the way of useful depth to lose really. Those players you named can be kept and actual second-tier talent added under the cap if they find the right manager. Botteril not only wasn't a good talent evaluator, he seemed to have no consistent direction either. Borderline AHL d-men were his "thing" lol.
Y’all remember when the Habs traded Ryan McDonagh, Chris Higgins, Pavel Valentenko & Doug Janik to the Rangers in exchange for Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt and Micheal Busto ?
watching this in 2023 and the Tage Thomson comment hasnt aged well. hes the best goal scorer in the league along with mcdavid. (At the time of writing this)
Stan Bowman deserves to be on this list for trading Teravainen to Carolina literally just to dump Bryan Bickell’s contract. And the Panarin for Saad deal 🤦🏻♂️
I understand the allure of mentioning Dale Tallon in this video. However, Dale Tallon's firing had very special circumstances. During the summer 0f 2009, Dale Tallion did not send qualifying offers to a set of restricted free agents (RFA) before the free agency deadline of July 1st. Technically, all these RFAs became unrestricted free agents (UFA). Nonetheless, Tallon re-signed all the RFAs but with substantial pay rises. This ultimately resulted in the Blackhawks having to trade great young players like Dustin Bufyglien and Andrew Ladd due to salary cap pressure. The Blackhawks were handcuffed on the salary cap for nearly a decade and it prevented them from winning a second cup the following year. In the end, that was a well deserved firing.
Tom Kurvers for the 1991 first round pick is probably worse. Team was a fringe playoff team (back then that meant you were very close to last overall) and a generational talent at the time from their backyard was available for this draft. To make things a little worse, Leafs made a few moves with the Nordiques to avoid the embarrassment of giving up Lindros. Leafs gave up more futures for roster players to improve a little and make the Nordiques a little worse. At least Kessel was around for 6 seasons and Boston didn't fully benefit from these picks (Seguin and Hamilton given away practically); Kurvers was gone before the 91 draft happened. At this point Rask has yet to lead the Bruins to a Cup (played no minutes as a back up in the 2011 run), and likely wouldn't have done the same with the Leafs if he wasn't moved. However Quebec drafted Lindros and flipped him for a truck load of assets that lead to building two Cup winning teams. Devils drafted Niedermayer who helped them win three Cups. IMO based on where the Leafs were in the early 90's and 2000's, having either Lindros or Niedermayer on those rosters has a good chance of pushing the team over the hump. The Raycroft or Kessel trade probably didn't cost the Leafs a Cup, the Kurvers trade likely did.
Artemi Panarin and Tyler Motte for Brandon Saad and Anton Foresberg, Panarin's lighting it up in Manhattan, while Saad's been inconsistently streaky, Motte's in Vancouver I think...and they're in post-Sedin rebuild mode, and Foreskin was terrible. Hjalmarsson for Connor Murphy and Laurent Dauphin...this one time will tell on with Dauphin, but Murphy is all but invisible and is not the shot blocking type that Hjalmarsson is. Ryan Hartmen for Victor Ejdsell, Hartman had some of the grit and youth that the Hawks need, what's Ejdsell got?...
Tallon got fired because he missed a bunch a deadline on several important contract tenders, giving guys like Byfuglien, Versteeg and Barker 3-4 million a year as opposed to high 6 figures if he got the the contracts in before the deadline. Bowman reaped the benefits of Tallon's incredible rebuild, and has segued that into a 10 year tenure with the Hawks. Hopefully he is gone this offseason.
I read in Ken Dryden's book that he collaborated with Scotty Bowman that Sam Pollock had the opportunity to trade for Detroit's second overall pick and get Marcel Dionne but Caron advised him against it.
yeah, but in Caron's defense, he was tasked with cutting payroll and trying to put together a winning team with less spending. Plus, he had an Alpha Male coach in Brian Sutter who is responsible for the Garth Butcher trade. Don't forget, Caron was the GM who fleeced Calgary out of Brett Hull.
I will say this, though... Caron seemed like he was trying to justify a lot of the moves he made in Montreal, because he kept bringing those guys to St. Louis... Gingras, Wickenheiser, Wamsley, Mark Hunter, Delorme, Natress, Schofield, Paslawski, Momesso, Meagher all had a history with Caron in MTL.
San Bowman belongs on this list now numerous bad trades last one being Chicago sent Lehner to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for winger Martins Dzierkals, a 22-year-old unsigned draft pick. Lehner and Dzierkals were then traded to Vegas, netting the Blackhawks goaltender Malcolm Subban, defenseman Slava Demin and Vegas' second-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.
Oh yeah not to mention before this we did get a swept in the playoffs but we had president trophy team he said we must get back to winning. What?????? Traded left wing Artemi Panarin, forward Tyler Motte and a sixth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft to the Columbus Blue Jackets for former Blackhawks forward Brandon Saad, goalie Anton Forsberg and a fifth-round pick in 2018. What????????
Yeah I'm from St Louis so I think of the Gretzky trade.where we gave up five excellent prospects. who all floundered in LA and we gave then a butt ton of money. Are playoff performance was suspect that and Gretzky was gone the next season. I can't help but wonder if we kept in laperriere and Roman vulpine who told wanted to play in St Louis things may have been different for us.
Thank god Barzy is an Islander. Never would be a fit in Edmonton. Furthermore the Oilers got the best player in the world that draft plus Ethan Bear and Caleb Jones. Yet Oilers fans still dwell on this and focus on shoulda, coulda and woulda. The fans who do this i suggest quit being so greedy, quit dwelling, whining and focus on positive things ahead.
My dad played minor hockey with Dale Tallon (I was born in Noranda, Québec, played at Dave-Keon Arena), they played in the same team in the Québec pee-wee tournament, and my dad was the best scoring player, the team photo is one of my most precious souvenirs, so it makes me happy whenever I hear about Tallon, great conversation material.

My red wings were on the receiving end of an absolute robbery of a trade. This season they acquired Robby Fabbri (former 21st overall pick) for Jacob de la Rose. Fabbri really displayed his draft pedigree this year in Detroit and I hope we sign him long term.
Tell me about it. I'm still scratching my head on that one... Fabbri wasn't getting any playing time when coming off back to back knee surgeries, and didn't have any time to find his game again. Can't really complain much given my blues were doing so well, but still to give fabbri away for absolutely nothing, and then see him find his game quickly was painful.
@@mack8154 Fabbri was hurt way too often. And being a small forward, we already got a couple of those. Would you prefer Fabbri or Robert Thomas? I'll take Thomas... :-) De la Rose gives us another wrecking ball when needed.
@@cschroeder8650 Oh no doubt Thomas. Thomas is going to be a star in this league. I'm expecting 70-85 points a year from him in a couple of years. Only thing I want is him to shoot a little more. But, with fabbri we could have built his value up and got a lot more for him, that was my issue. But, army has done amazing job constructing this team and don't have many complaints for the job he has done. That's really only trade I was upset with. Fabbri should've at least gotten first round pick or something close to that, if we had waited to trade him. De la rose will be gone next year. And he didn't do anything for us for real. So, why not just hold onto Fabbri? He was making like 900k a year. And had a really high ceiling, and at very least let him gain his value back before you dump him for nothing
5:05 I'd make that trade also if I was NJ. Bahl looks like he's going to be a star. Merkley and Schnarr, not so much, though Schnarr did have 102 points his final CHL season.
David Poile must be really exceptional when he has been Nashville's only manager for 22 years Or Lou Lamoriello who was the Devils GM for 28 years and Doug Wilson who has been with Sharks for 17.
I believe tallon was fired because he missed a deadline to resign seabrook and had to pay him more than they wanted to...also they hired scotty bowman as advisor who was pushing for his son to get the job
To be fair, I thought Ryan O'Reily was expendable in Buffalo, since they had Eichel and Reinhart - of course, they really could have done better, like trade for Subban.
As a Blackhawks fan, one trade that is never mentioned and was terrible is how the Hawks traded Panarin to CBJ for Brandon Saad who never had the incredible potential of a guy like Panarin. Panarin in his first 2 seasons finished with at least 74 points.... I don’t know how you openly trade such a young talented prospect and not request at least a 1st round pick in return. Who knows if they could have added 1 or 2 more cups in their great run over the last decade..
21/22 season is here now, Fenton is long gone from MN, and Fiala had become QUITE the offensive player for us as of late. Playing with a young rookie in Matt boldy and Freddy G, that line is on fire right now!
Chicago traded lehner and gustafsson. Lehner was probably one of the best goalies in the league and gustafsson put up more points than the average forward. I was very surprised because these guys were doing so well, but it makes sense because Chicago is slowly running out of money
A year after the video, the Ryan O'Reilly trade is looking better for Buffalo, if Tage Thompson is the real deal. I think he is, from watching him this year. What I saw was no fluke, but genuine goal scoring skills. I think he can be 50 goal man. Then it becomes a trade that worked out well for both teams.
Rask for Raycroft Two 1st (Seguin and D Hamilton) + 2nd for Kessel 1st (Rakell) and a 2nd (John Gibson) for Tyler Biggs Travis Konecny for two second round picks and a 3rd (Dermott, Bracco, Dzierkals) 3rd Overall pick (Scott Niedermayer) for nothing All trades from the same team. You can't make this stuff up.
I'm laughing because I don't want to cry at the list of travesties committed by the Toronto Maple Leafs. BTW, Scott Niedermayer was selected 3rd overall by New Jersey in 1991.
Here's one even worse. Freddy Modin to Tampa for the pylon known as Cory Cross. Modin goes on to win a cup, post two 30 goal seasons, and a few 20+ goal seasons. Cross was a pylon who derped in a key playoff goal once.
“Has your team ever made a bad trade?” Look at the entire Blackhawks 2018 offseason when they got rid of panarin for a lackluster goalie who was bad for an entire season and was the only time he saw net and hjalmarsson for someone who has potential but hasn’t necessarily shown it completely yet...

Ronald Corey put down his veto, trade was aborted, and he fired Savard + coach Jacques Demers.
Read that in Demers’ book.
Panarin for Brandon sad:( has me heart broken till this day
It was with cap issues to. Just unfortunate for the hawks
To be honest, as a Devils fan, I don’t see the Taylor Hall (second) trade or the vast majority being bad. Hall is oft injured and was halfway through a contract year set to become a FA anyway and publicly stated he wanted to be on a contending team. The reason Shero was let go was because no one played to their ability this past season and that’s more a coaching issue than a roster management one and because Shero held on to Hynes way too long.
yeah i agree man
Yea, and while Gusev and Subban didn't work out, none of the guys we traded for them haven't done particularly well either.
O'Reilly for Thompson looks like a steal now
O'Reilly did get them their SC
Tage Thompson “fringe bottom 6 forward”
Not that I'm a Botterill fan, but Ryan O'reilly if you remember wanted out, generally teams try to accommodate players who want out.
yeah and it is not like he had a lot of leverage. i can understand why people complain - the optics are very one sided - but it is not really a fair way to assess whether he had the instincts that you want in a GM.
Love how you got in a small clip of Melody Martin there during the Buffalo segment ^^
Thompson seems to have worked out well. In hindsight I'd make that trade again.
Thank you, ive been leading the charge for Stan Bowman to be fired and I have to point out to bandwagon fans that Stan didn't put those teams together and all he's done is trade away players to just bring them back after their talent has vanished, but wagoners love it cause it's a player they know
what we gave away to bring back andrew laad for a playoff run was the defining moment for me. That and letting go panarin. Also losing hjalmarson
San Jose Sharks: Erik Karlsson trade. Why did we trade a pick that could’ve been Alexis Laffrienere for a defenseman that had a MEDIOCRE season?
Trading for him wasn't a bad idea considering his talent at the time. But handing him a big contract despite his bad health was awful, especially since one of the conditions for resigning him was giving up that first.
Phil Kessel for 2 firsts and a second when the leafs were horrible. Also the Rask trade and many more..
We cant find a gm since john muckler or gerry Meghian we kept darcy reigher for wayyyyyyyyy !! Too long!!
Great video! Surprised you didn’t you didn’t mention peter Chiarelli in Edmonton.
lol that tage thompson comment aged well
Y’all remember when the Habs traded
Ryan McDonagh, Chris Higgins, Pavel Valentenko & Doug Janik to the Rangers in exchange for Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt and Micheal Busto ?
Stan Bowman still has his job, but should be #1 on this list.
Dang, never realized how cut throat that job is... Cool video!
Yep... Thanks dude!
watching this in 2023 and the Tage Thomson comment hasnt aged well. hes the best goal scorer in the league along with mcdavid.
I’m a leafs fan and the worst trades were Seguin and Hamilton for Kessel as well as the Rask trade
It could be worse.... No, no it really couldn't. You guys got fleased.
What about Steen?
Watching this July of 2022 I must say Tage Thompson is pretty decent return for O'Reilly 😁
The wings traded a first round pick for Kyle Quincy. That pick ended up being Andrei Vasilevski
Hopefully he is gone this offseason.
well Tage Thompson really broke out this year, almost 40 goals
You could do a whole episode on Ron Caron's tenure for the Blues.
Now the buffalo its now the winner of the oreilly trade long term.
Can we talk about Tage Thompson now?
I'm going to make a video/podcast talking about my worst takes. This is one of them lol
@@RobTalksHockey no one saw it coming lol I saw him play 2 years ago in person and called it a terrible trade as well😂
@@RobTalksHockey was gonna say this 😂 I think it’s a win win for both teams.
The players LA got didn’t do anything
Ironically Tage Thompson just scored 5 goals in a game.
When chiarelli traded a 1st for an ahl defenseman in Reinhart, which that pick turned out to be mat barzal
@@tattooedleo9969 Barzal-Draisaitl-Yammamoto would look pretty hot ngl
Everything Stan Bowman does is a terrible move, but when he traded Panarin for Sadd, and Anton Forsberg, that by far was his worst move.
We traded Tyler seguin to the stars for Louis Erickson Tyler suguin became one of the best players in the leagues while Louis errickson did nothing
we have eriksson rn, it really sucks
A cool 30 goals would say otherwise
Tage Thompson has a subsequent breakout year lol
HOW does a team w/ the longest playoff drought in the NHL have "cap issues"? ?
Jeff Skinner, that's how.
#14 David Michael Keon one of the classiest players in the N.H.L. and still my favorite Leaf.Such great memories of the Habs and Leaf games where another classy player Jean Beliveau #4 for Les Canadiens played.......Peace Misan.
Look up Bobby Clark’s 2nd time as GM with the Flyers. He, no lie, made a trade every week. Patrick Sharpe... Justin Williams... so many insane moves.
Both those trades still hurt me.
greatest all-time Flyer was the worst GM ever and the organization still suffers from his influence.
You forgot Peter Chiarelli but for which team and which trade
He will part 2, if not needs an entire 30 minute video
Lol
Now O’Reily is the captain of the blues
"Three Stanley Cups in five years."
It was three cups in six years. LA had two and Boston had one between 2010 and 2015.
How about a segment on GMs who should be fired. The top candidate: Marc Bergevin
Aha great idea!
Dont forget Bob Murray
What are you talking about? While Price’s contract isn’t great, he’s put together a very solid team and has some exciting prospects in the pipeline
He's pulled some decent trade to cover other weaknesses such as previous poor trades, and more glaring, poor drafting and development.
You are kidding right? Poor trade? Where are the bergevin trades we didnt win?? I cant seem to find one... he did very well with what he had been given at the time... he had mccaron and leblanc as his prospects and now he has the best prospect pool with primeau KK poehling caufield ylonen ikonen romanov fleury
That rage Thompson trade looking good now
Tage*
Do the best 5th round pick or later from every nhl team
You are persistent. It's on my list
Yeah give him time jeez
Yeah man seriously. Just appreciate the work he puts in for every great video.
Dude he has seen your comment for the past weeks. How have you not realized that, especially since he has liked your comment a few times. He’s doing the goddamn video now stop it’s annoying him and everyone who watches his videos.
Boston- Peter McNab
Calgary- toss up between Brett Hull and Gary Suter
LA Kings: Luc Robitaille
Vancouver- Pavel Bure
NYR- Sergei Zubov
Ottawa- Daniel Alfredsson
Chicago- Steve Larmer
Edmonton- Andy Moog
Hey Rob. It’s Mr Lowe. I taught you PE in middle school. You and your crew were amazing in convincing pretty much every class to play floor hockey. I love what you are doing here. Keep up the great work. Love your content. I’m still at Clayton so stop in and say hi if you are ever around. Cheers🍻
Hey, Mr. Lowe! I appreciate those floor hockey days and you allowing us to take shots on you at lunch... great times! Thanks for the support, I appreciate it. Go avs go baby!
Benning still has a job because im a beast
You were apart of the worst trade ever my dude
@@yarpyepiddy did you even read is comment. The man still has a job, which means loui is a beast. Can't believe I had to spell that out for you.
You're seeing now why Benning still has his job 👍
Robert Donnelly sorry, didn’t know I was the only person in the world who didn’t know who “benning” is. I’ll educate myself
clearly this is a troll account lol
De la Rose gives us another wrecking ball when needed.
Fabbri wanted to be moved to a team that could give him more ice time.
5:05 I'd make that trade also if I was NJ. Bahl looks like he's going to be a star. Merkley and Schnarr, not so much, though Schnarr did have 102 points his final CHL season.
Worst Trade
DET gets Kyle Quincy
For
1st round pick
(Andrei Vasey)
Tage thompson 4th liner 🤣🤣 did not age well
Let me know when he wins a Conn Smythe. Until then, he isn’t worth squat.
Hated us trading DROUIN at first. But Sergachev has become one of my favorite players on our team. Do u have a video talkin about that haha
Most questionable trade? As a Caps fan that's VERY easy, Forsberg for Erat.
Your vids just keep getting better and better! Keep it up man!
Tyler Seguin traded to Dallas.....I lost my shit.
David Poile must be really exceptional when he has been Nashville's only manager for 22 years
Or Lou Lamoriello
who was the Devils GM for 28 years and Doug Wilson who has been with Sharks for 17.
Poile was also in Washington for 15 years. 37 consecutive seasons he has been a GM. Quite impressive.
Poile has made a lot of bad trades, more bad than good and somehow he still has a job. Nashville is just too stupid to get rid of him.
Though i think the Hall for Larssen trade to be ok it was his miss management of Jesse Pulujarvi that ultimately was Chirelli’s downfall.
Now a subscriber-love the content you present-good stuff
I believe tallon was fired because he missed a deadline to resign seabrook and had to pay him more than they wanted to...also they hired scotty bowman as advisor who was pushing for his son to get the job
been waiting for this vid since i recommended it!! finally here
Dangit dude. I forgot to post your comment in the video. Appreciate it, it’ll be in the next one!
To be fair, I thought Ryan O'Reily was expendable in Buffalo, since they had Eichel and Reinhart - of course, they really could have done better, like trade for Subban.
Tage Thompson is really becomong a fn STUD UNIT
Skinner’s actually a really good player. It’s not like he’s a one year wonder. They overpaid but they had to because it’s buffalo.
I’m from buffalo, not a sabres fan though, but who would wanna Play there
As a Blackhawks fan, one trade that is never mentioned and was terrible is how the Hawks traded Panarin to CBJ for Brandon Saad who never had the incredible potential of a guy like Panarin.
Never heard about Malkin and the Islanders like this video implies... can't find anything online either. Anyone know what he's talking about?
A year after the video, the Ryan O'Reilly trade is looking better for Buffalo, if Tage Thompson is the real deal. I think he is, from watching him this year. What I saw was no fluke, but genuine goal scoring skills. I think he can be 50 goal man. Then it becomes a trade that worked out well for both teams.
Rask for Raycroft
Two 1st (Seguin and D Hamilton) + 2nd for Kessel
1st (Rakell) and a 2nd (John Gibson) for Tyler Biggs
Travis Konecny for two second round picks and a 3rd (Dermott, Bracco, Dzierkals)
3rd Overall pick (Scott Niedermayer) for nothing
All trades from the same team. You can't make this stuff up.
Boston actually wanted Pogge in that trade 😂 but his play at the world juniors convinced Toronto he was the real deal
Tage coming along lol
Can somebody please tell me the Malkin/Islanders connection? I can't find it anywhere.
Why is it snowing in your video?
In my lifetime? Ratelle and Brad Park for Phil Esposito. Oh, and we also traded Rick Middleton for Ken Hodge. So there's that.
Ratelle and Park for Espo and Carol Vadnais as I recall.
