- Welcome to another part of my SpongeBob project! I plan on reviewing every SpongeBob episode ever, to determine which episodes and seasons are good, and which are pure ScumBob. In this video I review all 41 episodes in the fifth season, which includes giving fun facts, highlights, quotes, and a definitive answer as to weather I find it good, meh, or ScumBob. In addition, I talk about my favorite episodes in the season, and give some general notes, stats, and facts. It's a REALLY long, fun ride, so grab a box of SpongeBob cereal and enjoy this video!

Season 7: It's just no longer the same
Something I like about Friend or Foe is that it makes episodes like F.U.N and New Leaf far more tragic and emotionally poignant.
But on the other hand, it makes enemy in law a whole lot weirder and messed up.

Its probably going to get cancelled after season 2

I mostly agree this time around, just a few of your mehs I think are good (Sing a Song of Patrick, Intimates of Summer) and vice-versa (The Krusty Plate, 20,000 patties under the sea). But yeah, the good episodes are really good (Roller Cowards is awesome) and the bad episodes are *really* bad (WhoBob WhatPants and Atlantis SquarePantis are in my bottom 10).
But now the fun really begins... Season 6 isn't all bad, but... um... good luck.
Thanks, I'm going to need it. Especially for season 7 which is extra long, and contains a ton of episodes I've heard bad things about. I'd be really interested in seeing you review WhoBob. I hated it, but had a hard time articulating exactly why. It just feels so very off.

Even as a kid, when I saw SpongeBob murder a bunch of clams to protect a rotting sandwich I knew the show had seriously changed for the worse.
If I saw that as a child I would probably be horrified and cry my eyes out. It's sad when cartoon network (Burrito) and even Disney channel (Milos magical milkshake) can do this plot a thousand times better!

The gross close-ups of the patty made me almost swear off Burger King for life. Burger King has been my favourite fast food place since the Pokemon and SpongeBob promotions of yore. I always thought Krabby Patties tasted like Whoppers. So to see THIS made me throw up and diet on only ramen and toast for a week. Eventually, I came up with a solution: to think of Brainiac from the DCAU, Solid Snake, or other sexy guys I liked while eating BK. It worked. Now I do this every time I see disgusting Krabby Patties in the show.

I like the fact that Pieguy builds up Atlantis Squarepantis through the entire first half of the video, making references to it every once in a while, and getting more and more frequent, as he gets closer and closer to the worst episode of the season. XD

The only episodes I totally disagree with PIEGUYRULZ are Sing a Song of Patrick, Blackjack and The Inmates of Summer. I thought they were really good.

Krabs a La Mode is such a good episode, didn’t even realize it was Season 5, thought it was 3 or at most 4
I actually disagree on Inmates of Summer, it's an episode where - while kind of an "old concept" - *sooo* many of the jokes just hit perfect bullseye, I can't help but to absolutely love it.
The Warden is also just completely perfect here, I couldn't even imagine him done better in the context of a SpongeBob episode.
I can't even remember most of the episodes you talk about from way-back-when, but I immediately remembered some of the visuals of this episode, just hearing the title - that's how funny I found it and how vividly I remember it now.

Honestly I found it somewhat unsettling but enjoyable. It kinda reminds me of older cartoons that were build around a piece of music.

What bothered me most about the Patrick eating an apple gag was, oddly enough, how he was eating an apple of all things. Sandy lives in what appears to be an oak tree, and I may not have a mastery of plant life, but I'm pretty sure apples don't grow on oak trees . . .

Spongebob's muffled dialogue when Patrick is standing on top of him is absolutely hilarious.
It's so similar to Kenny from South Park.
Here's something else you might not know about Spy Buddies. The whole episode is a Spy Parody, but the ending is actually a Parody of the movie "Trading Places". In that movie, the main antagonists make a bet involving the Switching of two people's lives, all over One Dollar. It's a really clever reference.
Another note for Season 5 should be there is a lot of singing in this season.

Nice touch on the ScumBob transitions for episodes like "Waiting", "Boat Smarts" and "To Love a Patty" along with other amazingly clever and subtle nods sprinkled in. Bravo my friend, bravo.
Here's a fun fact. Jack M. Crazyfish is voiced by Greg Baldwin. He's best known for being a voice match for Mako Iwamatsu after he passed away (Splinter in TMNT 2007, Iroh in Avatar The Last Airbender, and Aku in Samurai Jack). Though he was replaced by Tom Kenny in "20,000 Patties Under The Sea".

I actually loved Atlantis Squarepantis. It felt like a field trip, and Don’t get me wrong, even though the songs were somewhat trash, it kinda fills up the vibe of discovering INCREDIBLY AMAZING use of technology like an irl museum would. Video game generation, anything-ice cream maker, an extremely old bubble, so many memorable things to still see in my past childhood.
You must wish that Sponghenge was BANNED in Bikini Bottom.

I think it's fair to say your reviewing skills have definitely improved. Can't wait for season 6. THAT's where it gets interesting.
I’m on a tangent but I just want to point out that the character getting a managerial promotion over another character trope seems to be a running theme on Nickelodeon. In addition to it being done in Friend or Foe, it’s also been done in the Drake and Josh episode entitled “MovieJob” and in iCarly in the episode iPear Store and there’s probably other examples that I’m not aware of
Am I the only one that isn't creeped out by SpongeHenge? Don't get me wrong, I think it's bad. It's really boring, it has nothing worth liking, and the ending is jarring. But I don't find it creepy. Also, I don't hate it as much as most people. I probably wouldn't even put it in the bottom 10 for the season.
I saw it when I was pretty young so I was absolutely terrified by it and it made me stop watching spongebob for a very long time, so I guess most people were young when they saw it like me so they were scared of it. If I watched it now I'd still probably hate it but I doubt I'd be that creeped out by it, except what I remember from it it was pretty creepy

This is I will be in at but how can you not be scared? If you think about it, spongebob is in a cave to protect him from stinging jellyfish. He’s in there for sooo long that he’s insane, and the storm got so bad that everyone he knows and lives left without saying one last word to him. When he does get out, the whole town is buried in sand, and he is left to die with no food, alone, and insane. Then at the ending scene these things show that no one remembers spongebob. That is TERRYFYING.

These reviews are fantastic for so many reasons. It puts a critical point of view on the episodes to prove nostalgia isn't the only reason people believe the show's gone downhill, it acknowledges when new episodes are good and gives it the credit it deserves, plus these are just fun to watch. Also I actually agree with your opinion for almost every episode. I disagree with Battle of Bikini Bottom but besides that, it's weird how similar I would rank these episodes. Fantastic job, PieGuy!

These videos keep getting more and more interesting. I'm glad to know that you had the same reactions to "To Love a Patty" and "Atlantis Squarepantis"!
The one thing I notice is that even in terrible & scumbob quality episodes. Squidward is very down to earth a lot of the time & is nearly always able to bring something funny, realistic & witty with his remarks to the table. I'm starting to like Squidward more than I ever thought I did.
The only redeemable quality about to love a patty is squidwards side remarks, only thing that made me laugh in the episode

The Inmates of Summer is a lot like SpongeBob Meets the Strangler: SpongeBob and Patrick unknowingly tormenting a tough guy (the warden).
The Inmates of Summer is a pretty enjoyable episode. I had it on DVD along with Club SpongeBob
Probably because the strangler episode had more focus and had the person being tormented actually deserve it.

I agree with a number of things you said. There were some ratings I disagreed with, but like others have said, you bring up some very good points about each episode. I remember watching a lot of these...well, a lot when they first aired, but looking back, I'm not too familiar with them. I guess I'll have some catching up to do with Season 6!
Anyway, great video as always! Here's hoping the next season isn't as *quite* bad as I've been hearing. :D
This video is why you're one of my favorite reviewers. You judge everything fairly by going into an episode mostly unbiased and then giving your opinion. I was actually under the impression that a good majority of these episodes would be bad considering how notoriously bad a lot of modern SB episodes are, but there were a lot of good episodes you mentioned that I completely forgot about after not seeing them in so long. I didn't realize they were in this season because they had, at the very least, season 4 quality.
So, thanks for the awesome video! Can't wait for the other seasons :)

A Meh season. The number of Mehs should've given it away. This season doesn't really pull in either direction. It was kinda leaning toward Bad a little, since the Bads and Scumbobs are much worse than anything I've seen before, but I feel like it wasn't enough evidence for it to be considered Bad.

To Love a Patty is one of the few episodes that breaks Spongebob's character. He literally teared clams in half and killed them. It's like abusing ducklings, over food!

Atlantis Squarepantis is one of my most memorable episodes. I'm always happy to watch it. Yeah the songs are a bit too much but I like the plot. Glad that other people like it as well!
37:23) You can't simply squash a flea. Trust me on that. They have evolved to resist claws. They only methods to truly kill a flea are to either drown it, poison it, or use a nail clipper and even then it can be difficult.
To be honest, I hated Spongehenge. I was not only confused by the lack of jokes but this really strange ending and being way too mean spirited toward Spongebob. I agree with you on that episode.

Pretty sure the long face unwrapping scene is a refference to the twilight zone episode "eye of the beholder" where they take forever to slowly unwrap her bandages to see if the facial reconstruction was successful or if she will have to be sent away to a facility for the hidious. It is a wondeful episode, the one that got me hooked on the twilight zone.

After rewatching Stanley s squarepants I realized I actually like it a lot more than when I did as a child. There were some jokes I thought were clever and made me laugh out loud and I thought spongebob himself acted more pre movie in my opinion
In my opinion, this was the last good season of Spongebob. After that, it was all down hill from here and it was basically something that Nickelodeon could never recover from.

When I was little, I actually did legitmately feel bad for Squidward when SpongeBob confronted him in Breath Of Fresh Squidward (and I still vividly remember watching it the exact day that it aired).
Usually most kids at my age wouldn't have thought so much about this, and possibly get influenced by the horrible execution, but no. I actually thought this was a bad episode even when I was little. I think this may be an origin of what got me into criticism.
The part where it turned into good neighbors made me rewind several times to make sure I wasn't seeing things in the background.

I like spongehenge, actually. We saw Spongebob in a new light. People talk a lot about how we don’t see him display his intelligence a whole lot, but spongehenge offers that with how he designed the statues. I’m a bit biased, cuz I’ve always liked “farther-out” episodes like Squidward in Clarinetland, but I like it- certainly more than a lot of episodes in Season 5 and onward.

I remember I had this set of books that were all Nickelodeon a long time ago and 1 of the Spongebob ones had the same plot as "Waiting" except the toy was a peice of string. Watching that short was a deja vu moment for me.

Another thing to note about the ending of Goo Goo Gas is that Spongebob is one of those shows that just resets after every episode ends.
The Atlantis Squarepantis review made me instantly favorite.
His song about the episode is lightyears better than the songs in the actual episode. I was laughing hysterically the entire time. I hope he does more things like this going forward.

Overall, I'm honestly not too impressed with this season. While better than the godawful atrocities that were Seasons 6 and 7, it still contains quite a lot of awful episodes and is really when the show began to feel like it was drifting away from its former self. There are some great episodes this season, though in all honesty I'd still watch the best in Seasons 1-4 almost any day over most of them. I get why some people may like this season, but for me, it just doesn't have enough truly outstanding content to come back to aside from my Top 3, and particularly Roller Cowards.

When I first saw spongehenge I was 9 years old. I HATED it. They gave it an eerie atmosphere that made spongebob and the audience feel isolated from the rest of bikini bottom. The tune they chose was spongebob's version of lavender town music. And the ending was so depressing as spongebob went through all this trouble to get back to his regular life and when he finally does, it's implied that everything is gone and everyone is dead including his friends. The episode doesn't even try to play this off as a joke they straight up say everyone you loved from spongebob is gone and the only thing left of them are the giant spongebob statues. When I first saw this episode I was left with a depressed feeling that usually spongebob cures, not causes. I'm pretty sure this episode scarred me mentally because every time I remember that tune the jellyfish sing, I just instantly get a feeling of stress and depression.

One fun fact about "SpyBob": The intro music and the short "James Bond" moment have the music form the outro theme of "Action League NOW!" Now, THAT was a nostalgia bomb for me! :D
Thank you for another amazing season review. I'm mostly on the same page as you in terms of which episodes you liked and which ones you didn't like with the exception of Spongehenge. The song was what made me like the episode. I have that song in my head for a few days after seeing it, much in the same way as the song from the Earworm episode. My favorite episode of the season is "The Two Faces of Squidard." I loved the way Squidward looked at the end when he was flying around after Spongebob pushed him. I wish he would have stayed that way forever ;) Atlantis Squarepantis is probably the worst of all special up to this point. I was really interested in seeing it when I saw the promos for it at the time and for the fact that David Bowie is in it. However the songs are just so bad that the episode is unwatchable for me. Speaking of songs, I LOVE the "Idiot Friends" song in "Pest of the West." I place it in the same category as the best songs from the first three seasons. I can't stop laughing when I see this song. Overall this season is like you said pretty much down the line at great episodes and pure scumbob. A note for you for next season. There are a few amazing gems including, IMO, an amazing guest appearance by an awesome 80's rocker. Oh and IMO the worst and grossest episode ever "Pets or Pests" is here. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this episode makes me gag to the point of nearly puking it is so gross. I get angry and sick just watching it. This is much the same reaction that many have gotten from "The Splinter" which is also in season 6. I don't want to give too much more away since you haven't seen a lot of episodes from that season. I just don't have all that much either way to say about season 5 because it was almost a throw away (save for a few gems). I'm just annoyed that even though Nickelodeon has renewed the show for a 10th season, not ONE new episode has aired in 2014. The last new episode was "Spongebob, You're Fired!" That one aired in NOVEMBER. It is almost as if Nick quietly cancelled the series, but they didn't. I understand they want to wait until the second movie to air more episodes, but the movie doesn't come out for an additional 6 months. There should be some new episodes in order to make the series slightly new and fresh since the look and feel of the second movie will be slightly new and fresh. Again, great season 5 review. Looking forward to season 6 in a few months!

Blackjack pulled a Mandarin, in my opinion. 1:08:04- Um Neptune and Poseidon are the same god, one's just another name for the other. Though honestly I don't agree with The Original Fry Cook (meh), New Digs (EW), Breath of Fresh Squidward (here's a taste of your own medicine you little yellow bitch!), Money Talks (meh), The Donut of Shame (EW), Picture Day (EW), Blackened Sponge (EW), 20,000 Patties Under the Sea (meh), and The Battle of BB (EW). And that epilogue, hilarious.
