The elderly gentleman at the beginning of the video and the end is the young man who was the love of the other young man who succumbed to Black Lung Disease. He found a 4 leaf clover, and was thinking back to when the guy he loved gave him a 4 leaf clover, which started a love between them.

The significance of this song for Appalachia is huge. The song of course, written by Tyler, who is from kentucky, whose father worked in the coal mines. He asked Silas House, who is Kentucky’s poet laureate, a phenomenal writer, and a gay man living with his husband and raising a family in Kentucky, to write the story for the video. They used Appalachian actors as well. Tyler had stated that he has a cousin who is gay, who he is very close to, who moved away from Kentucky and never looked back. He wanted something on CMT to represent him. For me, it’s a beautiful love song, I can definitely apply it to my own life. The video, is a tragic, beautiful, sad, and all too true love story in Appalachia. We all love, live, and die, just the same.

As far as the 2 main actors.. they both have many acting credits.. but they are both gay.. Haynes came out as gay at the age of 14. He has said that he experienced bullying due to his sexuality, and that he ran away from home for a time due to his mother's negative reaction to it.His father died by suicide during Haynes's teen years, and Haynes was told that his being gay is what drove his father to kill himself.
Author Silas House wrote the storyline for Childers’ “In Your Love” music video.
“He [Childers] said he would like to have it be a gay love story, mainly because his first cousin who’s like a brother to him is gay, and he wanted him to see himself in a country music video. When he said that, I just thought, ‘So many other people have never seen themselves in a country music video. This would be pretty incredible, to have that kind of representation,’” the author told the outlet.
And that’s how House and his journalist husband, Jason Kyle Howard, came up with the moving love story of two coal miners in 1950s Appalachia…

As a gay man who lost his life's love back in 1993 to AIDS, I can so relate to this video and message. Oddly, men who fight gay men are often dealing with internal gay issues and they are trying to prove to others and to themselves they aren't gay. There is some jealousy there in them as they see how others are free to express themselves and the homophobe is trapped by his own internal prejudice and internal disgust about their own feelings. This is a beautiful song. I just stumbled across it yesterday and cannot believe I missed this. Great review!

I am so incredibly sorry for the loss you’ve endured and for the hardships the gay community has constantly been going through. My brother is gay and I’m worried he’s had the same internal struggles you mentioned. All I can do is show my unconditional love for him. I truly hope the world can one day see that we are all humans in this together and that who we love doesn’t make us any less of a human being.

You are right. It’s a love song that anyone can relate to. If you just watched a live version then you probably would have thought of your wife or maybe your parents in love. I think this particular story is important though. He wanted a country music video his gay cousin could see himself in. It’s a beautiful song that anyone can relate too but it’s also nice having a song that is representative of a non heterosexual relationship.

      Get the Kleenex ready.
Gay love story by Grammy nominated country artist Tyler Childer called, "In Your Love", first song released off his album due in September.
What makes this so powerful is gay people have such a challenging time finding "the one" compared to the larger heterosexual community. And to finally find it and then to lose it, is just devastating. Along with Childers amazing ache in his vocals.
      Great contrast to Aldeans.👍🏼
"One reason Childers wanted to do this music video, he told Ann Powers of NPR, "was my cousin growing up, who's like my big brother, is gay."
Please like it and support him, and write a positive comment.

So I've watched several of your reviews on TC. I'm not much on the music theory side of what you present, you're much more talented than I. However, the way you lean into and appreciate the words and the depth of what Tyler is trying to convey is something we share. The way he conveys a thought to words, then to lyrics, then to music is really inspiring. Your physical and emotional reaction to much of what he says through his songs I feel are often overlooked in some circles. I feel that to most it's just another song and it's cool because he uses the "F" word or whatever. Thank you for sharing the same deep appreciation I do in what's behind the lyrics. Well Done on all counts. Merry Christmas.

Keyboardist is Chase Lewis. I believe he is also the one that sings the real deep parts parts on Way of The Triune God in the live shows.

Michael, any chance you could pick a song off of Jason Isbell and the 400 Units new album, Weathervanes, and react to it.
Man, the album is so solid from top to bottom. I'd love to hear your take on a song from it. I'd suggest Volunteer, Cast Iron Skillet, If you Insist or Death Wish.
But honestly you could pick any song and you can't go wrong.

That my community arent sinners/evil/dirty they are people just like everyone else. This needed to be said!

The song is based on his cousin that is gay. In Tylers words he taught him a lot about music, and he wanted to do something for him. Not a fan of the video even though it is tastefully done. But a great love song. Brought me to tears about my own love. My wife.

I agree with leaving music to be interpreted, that’s how a song you hear becomes your own. That why Robert Hunter wouldn’t let people know what songs were written about. In this case however, I believe he did the video as a tribute to a relative.
