I just ordered a AEGISMAX Outdoor Ultra-Light Goose Down Sleeping Bag that is around a pound. You can zip a couple of them together for two people. The MSR Hubba Hubba is less than four pounds. I am thinking that comes close to what you are talking about. You are probably coming in at just a little under it. New gear! 🍻 Laminated map! 👍👍
Just hiked & camped this loop clockwise over the weekend! We are training for Rocky Mountain hunting out west, so we ran 50 lb. packs. Felt like an idiot while hiking ... but a genius at night when we were inside a tipi with a wood stove (lows in the teens). Great video and editing!! I'll be checking out more of your content!
Hello Bryce, thank you for sharing this 'couple' video. Ashley has a great attitude for hiking & backpacking. You do an excellent job of filming and informing your viewers what is going on. Thanks for sharing. You guys be safe out there. 🤗
I did the same loop hike just the day before this video was shot from Route 56. It can be done in a day, but be prepared to walk from dawn till dusk. Great video!
If you liked this trip you should look into Linville Gorge near Asheville NC. I did that loop last year and it was super rewarding. Hard ascents, great views and overlooks, and a waterfall or two. Great video though, I might have to head to Three Ridges soon.
Well watched again, just as much fun this time. Hope to see you in Va. again, a great place down the hill to the Devils backbone Brewery. Same side as Wintergreen Ski resort at the bottom of the range. On the other side of the range is Sherando Lake, great place for camping in the warm weather, SpyRock is a great hike also as is the Summit of the Priest Mt. or Cole Mt. Bald. Dave
I will have to look into those hikes! I plan on hiking virgina again soon but I'm currently in the smoky mountains on vacation! did a 4 day / 40 mile trip, and now enjoying a cabin with a hot tub!
I'm really jealous of your pack! It looks like you had to convince your significant other about sleeping with that tent in the config you had! 😂😂 I bet an insulated pad would have made the difference for you. As for birch trees I'm surprised you haven't seen any in Hocking Hills. Seems like they are all over there. Great trip Bryce! 👍 I with you that living in Ohio makes you choose real mountains any day.
i absolutely love this pack, i thought i would be slightly uncomfortable since its so light but it was amazing. And yes she was not thrilled about tarp camping and we definitely need insulated pads. It would have been much better with better pads. And the one sleeping bag system proved to be very uncomfortable. lol. We wont be doing that again. I've actually never been to Hocking Hills!. I know that sounds crazy but one day i will make it there. Haha. Thanks Tim!
Haha! Yup. I'm considering an Appalachian Trail thru hike in the next few years, so i've been keeping weight in mind when buying new gear .Thanks for noticing!
Great video, Bryce and Ashley! That steep trail...man, I was out of breath just looking at you climbing it. Alright, more Buckeyes! I began my hiking and backpacking "career" near Columbus on the banks of the Scioto River, Olentangy and Black Walnut Creek at age 10 when my dad was stationed at Lockbourne AFB...61 years ago. Great memories. One of my favorite places to go back then was Old Man's Cave area when I turned 16 and got my drivers license. I loved the Hocking Hills area. I collect watches and I would love to pick up the Garmin model you have.
Welcome to Va. Hope you had a good time, Wish you had shown the shelter at Harpers Creek, I tried to get there from RT.56 but it was to much for me and at 75 now there is no way. Dave
Thanks Dave! There were people camped up by the shelter so we wanted to give them their privacy since the camping area was huge and not many people there. It is a pretty difficult trail indeed!
Nicely done trip video. What a great way to celebrate new years. Those views were spectacular! Birch bark is the ultimate fire starter, worth searching for. Thanks for bringing us along.
I just ran across this episode although I've been subscribed. I did that loop two weeks ago. Yes, I disagree. Walking up the continuous falls (water level was high) of the Mau Har trail was great. The only thing I did not like was continually looking at the Priest, laughing at me, taunting me. I attempted it south bound this past summer. Came down sick and my body quit halfway up. Next time. Thanks for the video!
Great video work man. I'm also wanting to try some tarp camping in cold weather. Summer is all about hammocks for me but I can't see spending what it takes to hammock in serious cold.
I know what you mean. Having to use an under quilt and a top quilt/sleeping bag seems like a lot to me as well.. I like tarp camping because its weight benefits. My hammock setup weighs a bit more
Bryce Newbold . It has been awhile. I made it out overnight, the week before Christmas, on the Greenwood Trail in the WNF. I did not film though. I did a day hike on NY Eve day too. But, I've been busy coaching since October. My schedule will open up soon. I really want to try a tarp setup too. As soon as time is available and the weather looks dry I want to head out....and film it!
I see. Im looking forward to your take on tarp camping. Its still pretty new to me but I enjoy the "naturalist" feel of it. Although I'm still not man enough to do it in the summer. Haha!
Great editing and length! that had to be quite a drive for you to get down there. I was making a delivery in Eastern PA last week and really wanted to do a quick hike in the Laural Highlands area, but the fog and rain just would not let up so had to just drive on by. I really want to do the 70 mile thru hike there this year. Also, I like that watch you have, how much does it run? I had to laugh at your clips of you running back to get your camera...that was great. I may be traveling close to the Mohican or Cuyahoga area in the next week or two, do ya have any suggestions for a good overnight trip there?
Thanks Jason. Yes it was a 6 hour drive for us. haha. And I also plan on doing the 70 mile highlands trek one of these days. My watch was only $120 because its a first generation fenix made in 2015. I think they are up to the fenix 4 or something like that now. They are super pricey but old ones are cheap on amazon. When i go to mohican i pretty much dont have a game plan when i arrive because you never know what park and pack sites are available. So you always may need to change your route because of that. I have yet to do Cuyahoga so i have no tips on that one. haha.
Is there a place to see the same trail and camping site you used? Looking to take my brother through the same one. Also do you need a permit for this one? Thanks!
There are a few maps online if you search for Mau-Har, Three Ridges Hike Loop. I go over our route and camp site in the video as well. We did a Counter clock-wise loop. The campsite we stayed at was by the Harpers Creek shelter on the Appalachian Trail. There was plenty of sites to choose from there!. No permit needed.
Just did this 3 weeks ago. Ur spot on about the difficulty.

Thanks man, 50lbs on that trail would be a hell of a workout! I've wanting to try out a tipi/ hot tent. Looks so warm and cozy! Thanks for tuning in!
Crazy 😜 like a fox 🦊.

Thanks for the comment. Ash is a great hiker. Possibly better than me. lol

Awesome! i just missed ya! Thanks Brian

Thanks for the tip! I've heard of Linville Gorge before. I'll definitely look into that. Thanks Dan!

Very Good Video!! Virginia is very high our our list for backpacking. It's a very long drive for us! I also like your new pack!
It was a 6 hour drive for us. But the AT is always worth it!
damn, serious gear upgrades there buddy. cubrn pack, mh ghost whisperer. looks great man!
Haha! Yup. I'm considering an Appalachian Trail thru hike in the next few years, so i've been keeping weight in mind when buying new gear .Thanks for noticing!

Love the video. Looks like a really sweet trip!
Thanks John!

Thanks so much! We always do a new years hike.. Except for last year.. Sub 15 degrees was too much for us . haha
Nice Bryce! What a pretty area. Would love to see more views while talking etc. Hope you don't mind me saying...
Great trip guys, tarp camping is the best I don't like tents or hammocks, you videos are becoming very good Thumbs up!!!
I agree! Thanks so much! It only took me 6 days of binge editing to complete it. lol. Worth it.

nice! i loved that area! 6 1/2 hour drive though!
Another great video man! we have been playin with the idea of doing three ridges. looks like were gonna have to lol. beautiful scenery out there.
Great video, one of my favorite places.
It was a cool place. Id like to go back someday
FIRST TIME IN VA. !!! and you pick the hardest trail in Va.
🤘

Nice trip Bryce! I was out on Archers Fork for my last 2016 hike! I will be looking for your next video. Happy 2017!
Thanks man! You have any videos coming up soon? Its been awhile!
Bryce Newbold .

I watched Joe Brewer hike the continental divide trail with only a tarp. It seems pretty cool, I am with you on summer though.
Great video. Doing some research on this hike for Boy Scouts. Keep up the good work. Great camera work ala Les Stroud...Happy Trails.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Les Stroud is my biggest influence!
Awesome our anniversary is feb 16 I was thinking about doing this loop then I have a three day weekend that weekend. Thanks homie
No prob. Its a fun one
15 lbs? Holy shit. Mine is usually like at the very least 40 and has been as high as 80 lol, no wonder every hike is rough
I think the most i ever carried was near 40 and it sucked! Anything under 30 im ussually happy with.
I agree with uphill hiking. Much rather my heals planted in the back of my boot then slipping side to side and jaming into the front.
Yea my toes hate downhills!

Great video ! How far from the O ? How long was the drive from ohio
It was a 6 hour drive from my location within the O. A bit long for just a 1 nighter but we didnt mind!
Did you find a water source along that trail?
Yes. Mau har trail had alot of water, and crossed a stream right before our campsite on the AT
Is there a place to see the same trail and camping site you used? Looking to take my brother through the same one. Also do you need a permit for this one? Thanks!
