So I was the idiot who suggested Faded Hills for the "obscure or not as well liked" prompt because while it's not obscure, it certainly isn't well liked, and truth be told, it's far from my favorite. I wasn't expecting my suggestion to be picked and didn't even really want it to be picked. that said, the breakdown of the song has given me a sense of appreciation for it, maybe not enough to willingly listen to it, but enough to not hate it. Trust me though, the rest of Forces' soundtrack is much better. the various Infinite themes, Arsenal Pyramid Exterior and Interior, The Death Egg Robot Boss themes, Shadow's level remixes(especially Eggman's Facility and Virtual Reality) and the main theme Fist Bump just to name a few.

12:34 Little bit of context for ya Marco Sonic CD has two OSTs, the original Japanese (the one you listened to, also shared by the European release) and the American which is a thing of its own made in a crunch time of 9 months (thanks SEGA of America). Time travel is the game's main thing, zones have four variants/songs each (Past, Present, Bad and Good Future), so they play around with the same musical ideas and motifs in different ways (it's one of the reasons I love this game so much) Quartz Quadrant is a great example and one of my favorites - Present's first half is a glimpse into the Bad Future, and the second half (when the accordion comes in) is a glimpse into the Good Future. You get both shown to you at the same time because you're in the Present, the future is uncertain, and which "version" of the song you get in the Future depends on how you branch out from there All tracks are Redbook audio, except for the Past tracks which are all programmed directly in the Genesis' Yamaha sound chip (stylistic choice from the composer at the time inspired by hardware evolution - "Genesis is the past, CD (audio) is the future" or something like that IIRC). SEGA of America didn't bother to change that because of crunch time, swapping CD tracks for them was easier than reprogramming the game so they left it at that
In a sense having both of them contain the same origin(past tracks) while leading different paths of music styles (present and future), unintentionally going very well with the gameplay of Sonic CD.

One thing I really love about the Sonic franchise is the final boss themes. Sonic has some pretty intense bosses, from giant robots to malevolent gods to time devouring deities. You would expect the themes for these fights to be intimidating, scary, foreboding, like you're fighting for your life. Sometimes, in the first phase, they are. But in the second phase, its different. Whether it's an uplifting orchestra or cheesy inspirational rock, the music tells you that this is YOUR fight to win. YOU are the badass, YOU are the unstoppable force of nature, YOU are gonna kick some ass and grab some snacks when it's done, and NOTHING is gonna stop you because YOU ARE SONIC THE GODDAMN HEDGEHOG
Pumpkin Hill was the very first music track Tomoya Ohtani did for the entire series, just proving from the get-go that he's an absolute legend. He can literally do ANY type of music to perfection, but his specialty is hip-hop beats and lo-fi. I saw the Sonic Symphony in Boston a couple months ago, and he showed up by complete surprise. Was not on the guest list at all. I got to give him a fist bump at the end of the show.
By the way, Solaris from Sonic 06 is an arrangement of the game's main theme called "His World". There's a lot of renditions of it in the game, but the original one is by a band called Zebrahead. There's also a Crush 40 cover that was released later which is surprisingly worse somehow.

@@MarcoMeatball Great! That soundtrack holds its own as a melody masterpiece of the late 80s. However with Sonic 3 and all others after that, the magic is in the changing of theme moods between acts. Angel Island act 1 and 2 really showcased this new change that all Sonic games would continue to do forever after that. Sonic CD was actually the first to do mood shifts with past, present, and future versions of zones. The beat change in Quartz Quadrant was a sort of link to the past and future versions of the song.
@@Urrelles Feels like Sonic 2 gets all the attention from non-fans despite its music not being as catchy as the other 3 games from that time. At least in my personal opinion. I love Aquatic Ruin but I don't think any song from Sonic 2 touches the better songs of Sonic CD or Sonic 3(&K). They come closer to Sonic 1's tracks but I honeslty like Spring Yard and Labyrinth better than all the Sonic 2 tracks. Aquatic Ruin and Emerald Hill are the ones I like - Mystic Ruin is alright but its too short. Aquatic Ruin is short too but it's excusable due to the melodies. Great for covers

For everyone else, here's a quick lowdown why this specification is important: Those who grew up with Sonic 3K know of the "original" soundtrack, as it was publicly released. Those who knew of that same OST before it was publicly released are aware of the "Beta" tracks that were eventually replaced. A PC compilation used this version of the OST. Those who played, or were introduced to Sonic, through "Sonic Origins" have heard the Beta tracks remastered really poorly. Genesis, Beta, Origins...and now you (kinda) know. ;)

Sonic CD was special because it was released on the Sega CD addon for the Genesis/Mega Drive, which had games released on... well, CDs. This means it has the ability to play back CD quality sound, despite it being a 16 bit console, which allowed games released for it to break the limitations of game audio for the time.
12:40 - Sonic CD had its entire soundtrack changed in the USA because... reasons. I don't know why they did it but they did. Europe got the original Japanese OST, that's why it says "JAP/EUR" version. People has strong opinions about which one is better.

for sonic cd, there are two versions of the soundtrack: the JP/EU version being the version heard on copies released in japan and europe, whilst the NA version was heard on north american copies. modern rereleases have the option to listen to either. the JP/EU soundtrack is generally considered the better of the two and is used more frequently for remixes of the tracks. each level has 4 variants: past, present, good future and bad future. the music for the past version of the level is the same in both soundtracks but the remaining three are different tracks from each other entirely.
Kind of laughing when he said he hadn't heard a theme built around Knuckles yet- Unknown From ME in the last video *is* Knuckles theme If you want more character themes, I'd recommend It Doesn't Matter (Sonic's theme (either SA1 or SA2 version, both are good)), Believe In Myself (Tails' theme (SA2 version)), and E.G.G.M.A.N. (Eggman's theme). Crisis City is also a FANTASTIC track
The thing I love most about Rooftop Run Day is how full the guitars are. The drums too, it's such a warm and full sound that just gets me every time. I'm really glad to see you listen to more Sonic music! I'm still not sure how I feel about doing it live, I was there for a little bit and frankly the chat is a bit toxic and also loves spoiling stuff; but I think there's a bit of a genuine aspect to it that adds to the experience. Although, there definitely is something to recording it alone and then releasing the finished product without people allready knowing what happened. What comes to mind is your video on Coalescence: Returns, which is probably my favourite on your channel, alongside the other Risk of Rain 2 tracks which I really enjoyed seeing you dissect. Of course, it's completely up to you, whatever you enjoy the most is the correct choice. And now, once again after an honest opinion of the current MarcoMeatball media franchise, I humbly and arrogantly ask for you to listen to the Crash Twinsanity soundtrack. Fully acapella, as far as I know it's the only fully acapella soundtrack in gaming. And if you're not a fan of Crash Bandicoot, don't worry, neither am I. But Crash Twinsanity is nothing like the other games in the franchise, it's a really interesting experience. It's rare to see a sort of slapstick comedy game, but it pulls it off amazingly. Hope you check out the OST, game, or both at some point. Keep up the good work, chief!

@@MarcoMeatball Glad I can help, even if it's just my opinions. Live and pre-recorded both have their pros and cons, and I've enjoyed different parts of both. And absolutely, I love Crash Twinsanity. The game isn't perfect by any means, but it's identity is SO strong, that I've never played another game anything like it. No other Crash game even comes close to how hard this game leans into it's strengths, and it's not too hard either so it's a great game to play if you're specifically in it for the tunes. I also hate Crash games, I've played most of them (1-3, Wrath of Cortex, Crash of the Titans, 4, and a few spin offs), but I love Crash Twinsanity so much despite that. Maybe I'm overhyping it, but it's 100% in my top 5 games of all time, maybe even top 3. I could go on about it for several theses, but I feel like I've gotten my points across! Love your stuff, for me the Risk of Rain videos and currently the Sonic ones are really filling a void I didn't know I had. Thanks for doing a wider array of reactions, it's been really nice to see. (P.S. don't hate on Sonic '06 too hard, there's a fan remake called "Sonic Project '06" that is the best platformer I've ever played, highly recommend.)
I feel like people have it as their favorite because the stage is their favorite. It's a REALLY good stage - but I can't be convinced that its music is at the level of half the other daytime levels, let alone some of the better night stages (or hubs). The guitars DO have a very full sound that gives it more life compared to the Generations version - I can't stand the chord progression in that one. It's *that* chord progression
@@dantefredul6326 I dunno, my favourite stage from Unleashed was Rooftop Run, when I was a kid; it's just so bombastic and genuine. I haven't finished Unleashed yet, but I still think Rooftop Run holds up. In all aspects, including sick beats.
So solaris phase 2 is an insrumental version of the main theme of sonic 2006 "His World" and I do suggest listening to the full main theme for comparison.(Some people only like the instrumental whereas I like it with the lyrics.)
The "zebrahead version" of His World is my personal favorite variation and worth listening to afterwards as well. It trades some of the original's passion for maximum intensity.

Yeah, Knuckles is all but chill, he is the typical hot-headed man who punches first and then continues punching after one of his friends stops him to ask the questions. The Mania shorts series represents very well his personality, you should totally see it
My personal favorite Sonic ost is the Team Sonic racing one. Sand road, Bingo Party, Haunted castle, … there are a lot of tracks i love for so many different reasons. And most of them have a « final lap » version, which, unlike Mario kart, isn’t just a faster version of the original song, but it’s also rearranged differently depending on the track. But honestly, the entire soundtrack of this game is worth listening to. Most of the songs are remixes from over Sonic games, which revisits songs in a way so that makes them feel new, but you can still recognize what makes their identity.
As you can see, 06 was supposed to be one of the biggest, most cinematic, ultimate Sonic games and for me it still is, but the music is absolutely perfect its sorta that late 90s early 2000s both so dark and so light feeling, rich with story, but also just real fun
Oh hell yeah, Rooftop Run, my favorite. But you gotta hear the Classic version from Sonic Generations. One of my top all time catchiest VG music tracks.
As far as spooky themes are concerned I really like Mystic Mansion from Sonic Heroes, it's just a very interesting dynamic of it's own two halves. Won't tell much more about tone (both of them in fact) it in my opinion has in case it will ever be picked, but it's great, one of my favourites from this game.

Honestly, I really enjoy the music from the Game Cube era. You already had Live and Learn, but there were some other bangers in there. My suggestions: The Sonic Heroes main theme as well as the final boss theme "What I'm Made Of" Basically the whole track list of Shadow the Hedgehog, especially "I Am (All of Me)", "All Hail Shadow" and "Never Turn Back". These songs are so amazingly cheesy, it's just great 😁

Starlight Carnival Act 1 or Asteroid Coaster Act 3 from Sonic Colors are some good listens. Colors just had a banger of an OST all around, as is typical of any Sonic game, good or bad.
I could go through a lot of iconic tracks but i am a HUGE advocate for the storybook series You've already heard knight of the wind so i reccomend more from the game with some that are not as well listened to. 0:10 oh do you ever 😂 I’ve been a fan for just about 20 years so I’m pretty familiar with a lot of the music. It’s interesting to hear the thoughts of someone hearing it for the first time and actually enjoying it as well. Also, echidnas are pretty solitary animals (makes sense for Knuckles to live alone on Angel Island) so you won’t see them doing too much. In the wild, if you’re lucky to see one, it’s probably just waddling along minding its own business. It will probably hide in a spiky ball if you try to approach them as they tend to be pretty shy. They’re super cute though.

I would LOVE to watch you play Sonic Unleashed, seriously! There are 2 versions, and I strongly recommend playing the HD version, mostly because the other version got stripped of a huge amount of content to fit on the Wii. Also, it's easily one of, if not the hardest Sonic game in the series, so be ready for that, lol! Sonic CD was the first Sonic game to be able to have actual CD quality music, and they wanted to celebrate that! Also, when it got sent to the U.S., the team there wanted to show off their music knowledge too, so it ended up having a COMPLETELY different ost. Not necessarily worse! Just very different. Lost World has pretty fun gameplay! Just be prepared for writing that's... more of a meme than actual writing. Great music tho! Solaris Phase 2 is the final boss music of Sonic 06, it's an orchestral arrangement of a rock-rap song from earlier in the game. Lol, Faded Hill... I mean, they tried, right? It's actually a remix of another poorly received (deservedly) game, Sonic 4, and like Sonic 4, its main issue is he soundfont it uses, which overshadows the melodies. Sonic Mania is just... such a love letter in so so many ways! Sonic Frontiers has... INCREDIBLE boss music. My god. Definitely sorry I missed the early part of the stream, I'm glad it's getting uploaded in video format so I can type stupid walls of text on them, lmao

Gamma's theme might be my favorite song from SA1, aside from Open Your Heart. It's so beautiful and sad and introspective all at once, I adore it.

Sonic CD has two OSTs, the original Japanese (the one you listened to, also shared by the European release) and the American which is a thing of its own made in a crunch time of 9 months (thanks SEGA of America). Time travel is the game's main thing, zones have four variants/songs each (Past, Present, Bad and Good Future), so they play around with the same musical ideas and motifs in different ways (it's one of the reasons I love this game so much)
Quartz Quadrant is a great example and one of my favorites - Present's first half is a glimpse into the Bad Future, and the second half (when the accordion comes in) is a glimpse into the Good Future. You get both shown to you at the same time because you're in the Present, the future is uncertain, and which "version" of the song you get in the Future depends on how you branch out from there
All tracks are Redbook audio, except for the Past tracks which are all programmed directly in the Genesis' Yamaha sound chip (stylistic choice from the composer at the time inspired by hardware evolution - "Genesis is the past, CD (audio) is the future" or something like that IIRC). SEGA of America didn't bother to change that because of crunch time, swapping CD tracks for them was easier than reprogramming the game so they left it at that
In a sense having both of them contain the same origin(past tracks) while leading different paths of music styles (present and future), unintentionally going very well with the gameplay of Sonic CD.

Fly in the Freedom is legit one of the best sonic songs.
One thing I really love about the Sonic franchise is the final boss themes. Sonic has some pretty intense bosses, from giant robots to malevolent gods to time devouring deities. You would expect the themes for these fights to be intimidating, scary, foreboding, like you're fighting for your life. Sometimes, in the first phase, they are.
But in the second phase, its different. Whether it's an uplifting orchestra or cheesy inspirational rock, the music tells you that this is YOUR fight to win. YOU are the badass, YOU are the unstoppable force of nature, YOU are gonna kick some ass and grab some snacks when it's done, and NOTHING is gonna stop you because YOU ARE SONIC THE GODDAMN HEDGEHOG
Pumpkin Hill was the very first music track Tomoya Ohtani did for the entire series, just proving from the get-go that he's an absolute legend. He can literally do ANY type of music to perfection, but his specialty is hip-hop beats and lo-fi.
I saw the Sonic Symphony in Boston a couple months ago, and he showed up by complete surprise. Was not on the guest list at all. I got to give him a fist bump at the end of the show.
By the way, Solaris from Sonic 06 is an arrangement of the game's main theme called "His World". There's a lot of renditions of it in the game, but the original one is by a band called Zebrahead. There's also a Crush 40 cover that was released later which is surprisingly worse somehow.

@@MarcoMeatball Great! That soundtrack holds its own as a melody masterpiece of the late 80s.
However with Sonic 3 and all others after that, the magic is in the changing of theme moods between acts. Angel Island act 1 and 2 really showcased this new change that all Sonic games would continue to do forever after that.
Sonic CD was actually the first to do mood shifts with past, present, and future versions of zones. The beat change in Quartz Quadrant was a sort of link to the past and future versions of the song.
@@Urrelles Feels like Sonic 2 gets all the attention from non-fans despite its music not being as catchy as the other 3 games from that time. At least in my personal opinion. I love Aquatic Ruin but I don't think any song from Sonic 2 touches the better songs of Sonic CD or Sonic 3(&K). They come closer to Sonic 1's tracks but I honeslty like Spring Yard and Labyrinth better than all the Sonic 2 tracks. Aquatic Ruin and Emerald Hill are the ones I like - Mystic Ruin is alright but its too short. Aquatic Ruin is short too but it's excusable due to the melodies. Great for covers

You mentioned "original Genesis". For everyone else, here's a quick lowdown why this specification is important:
Those who grew up with Sonic 3K know of the "original" soundtrack, as it was publicly released.
Those who knew of that same OST before it was publicly released are aware of the "Beta" tracks that were eventually replaced. A PC compilation used this version of the OST.
Those who played, or were introduced to Sonic, through "Sonic Origins" have heard the Beta tracks remastered really poorly.
Genesis, Beta, Origins...and now you (kinda) know. ;)

Sonic CD was special because it was released on the Sega CD addon for the Genesis/Mega Drive, which had games released on... well, CDs. This means it has the ability to play back CD quality sound, despite it being a 16 bit console, which allowed games released for it to break the limitations of game audio for the time.
12:40 - Sonic CD had its entire soundtrack changed in the USA because... reasons. I don't know why they did it but they did. Europe got the original Japanese OST, that's why it says "JAP/EUR" version. People has strong opinions about which one is better.
They changed it cuz they thought American audiences wouldn't like it
And again sega of America thought they would make something better than sega of japan aka literally the people who INVINTED sonic in the first place

for sonic cd, there are two versions of the soundtrack: the JP/EU version being the version heard on copies released in japan and europe, whilst the NA version was heard on north american copies. modern rereleases have the option to listen to either. the JP/EU soundtrack is generally considered the better of the two and is used more frequently for remixes of the tracks. each level has 4 variants: past, present, good future and bad future. the music for the past version of the level is the same in both soundtracks but the remaining three are different tracks from each other entirely.

If you want more character themes, I'd recommend It Doesn't Matter (Sonic's theme (either SA1 or SA2 version, both are good)), Believe In Myself (Tails' theme (SA2 version)), and E.G.G.M.A.N. (Eggman's theme).

The thing I love most about Rooftop Run Day is how full the guitars are. The drums too, it's such a warm and full sound that just gets me every time.
I'm really glad to see you listen to more Sonic music! I'm still not sure how I feel about doing it live, I was there for a little bit and frankly the chat is a bit toxic and also loves spoiling stuff; but I think there's a bit of a genuine aspect to it that adds to the experience. Although, there definitely is something to recording it alone and then releasing the finished product without people allready knowing what happened. What comes to mind is your video on Coalescence: Returns, which is probably my favourite on your channel, alongside the other Risk of Rain 2 tracks which I really enjoyed seeing you dissect.
Of course, it's completely up to you, whatever you enjoy the most is the correct choice. And now, once again after an honest opinion of the current MarcoMeatball media franchise, I humbly and arrogantly ask for you to listen to the Crash Twinsanity soundtrack. Fully acapella, as far as I know it's the only fully acapella soundtrack in gaming. And if you're not a fan of Crash Bandicoot, don't worry, neither am I. But Crash Twinsanity is nothing like the other games in the franchise, it's a really interesting experience. It's rare to see a sort of slapstick comedy game, but it pulls it off amazingly. Hope you check out the OST, game, or both at some point. Keep up the good work, chief!

@@MarcoMeatball Glad I can help, even if it's just my opinions. Live and pre-recorded both have their pros and cons, and I've enjoyed different parts of both.
And absolutely, I love Crash Twinsanity. The game isn't perfect by any means, but it's identity is SO strong, that I've never played another game anything like it. No other Crash game even comes close to how hard this game leans into it's strengths, and it's not too hard either so it's a great game to play if you're specifically in it for the tunes.
I also hate Crash games, I've played most of them (1-3, Wrath of Cortex, Crash of the Titans, 4, and a few spin offs), but I love Crash Twinsanity so much despite that. Maybe I'm overhyping it, but it's 100% in my top 5 games of all time, maybe even top 3.
I could go on about it for several theses, but I feel like I've gotten my points across! Love your stuff, for me the Risk of Rain videos and currently the Sonic ones are really filling a void I didn't know I had. Thanks for doing a wider array of reactions, it's been really nice to see.
(P.S. don't hate on Sonic '06 too hard, there's a fan remake called "Sonic Project '06" that is the best platformer I've ever played, highly recommend.)

I feel like people have it as their favorite because the stage is their favorite. It's a REALLY good stage - but I can't be convinced that its music is at the level of half the other daytime levels, let alone some of the better night stages (or hubs). The guitars DO have a very full sound that gives it more life compared to the Generations version - I can't stand the chord progression in that one. It's *that* chord progression

I haven't finished Unleashed yet, but I still think Rooftop Run holds up. In all aspects, including sick beats.
So solaris phase 2 is an insrumental version of the main theme of sonic 2006 "His World" and I do suggest listening to the full main theme for comparison.(Some people only like the instrumental whereas I like it with the lyrics.)
The "zebrahead version" of His World is my personal favorite variation and worth listening to afterwards as well. It trades some of the original's passion for maximum intensity.

My personal favorite Sonic ost is the Team Sonic racing one. Sand road, Bingo Party, Haunted castle, … there are a lot of tracks i love for so many different reasons.
And most of them have a « final lap » version, which, unlike Mario kart, isn’t just a faster version of the original song, but it’s also rearranged differently depending on the track.
But honestly, the entire soundtrack of this game is worth listening to. Most of the songs are remixes from over Sonic games, which revisits songs in a way so that makes them feel new, but you can still recognize what makes their identity.
So happy "Sea Bottom Segue" is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Easily in my top 10 Sonic songs.

As far as spooky themes are concerned I really like Mystic Mansion from Sonic Heroes, it's just a very interesting dynamic of it's own two halves.
Won't tell much more about tone (both of them in fact) it in my opinion has in case it will ever be picked, but it's great, one of my favourites from this game.

I’ve been a fan for just about 20 years so I’m pretty familiar with a lot of the music. It’s interesting to hear the thoughts of someone hearing it for the first time and actually enjoying it as well.
Also, echidnas are pretty solitary animals (makes sense for Knuckles to live alone on Angel Island) so you won’t see them doing too much. In the wild, if you’re lucky to see one, it’s probably just waddling along minding its own business. It will probably hide in a spiky ball if you try to approach them as they tend to be pretty shy. They’re super cute though.

I would LOVE to watch you play Sonic Unleashed, seriously! There are 2 versions, and I strongly recommend playing the HD version, mostly because the other version got stripped of a huge amount of content to fit on the Wii. Also, it's easily one of, if not the hardest Sonic game in the series, so be ready for that, lol!
Sonic CD was the first Sonic game to be able to have actual CD quality music, and they wanted to celebrate that! Also, when it got sent to the U.S., the team there wanted to show off their music knowledge too, so it ended up having a COMPLETELY different ost. Not necessarily worse! Just very different.
Lost World has pretty fun gameplay! Just be prepared for writing that's... more of a meme than actual writing. Great music tho!

I've been practicing singing and screaming Break Through it All. By the time I'm done singing the main bit, the only part that still trips me up is trying to match Kellin saying "We'll be lost in the wiiind" toward the end. Guess that's what I get for having a naturally baritone voice.
