  • A relaxed evening chat as I recall my background and perspective on the most expensive tarot deck I have purchased, and pricey indie decks in general.

    ✨About me:
I am a tarot reader and astrologer based in Queensland, Australia. My channel name originates from the stunning tropical Whitsunday region of Queensland, where I lived at the time of creating my consultancy, and still have close ties to. I was born in Romania on a Full Moon with the Sun in Sagittarius and Moon in Gemini, gifting me a thirst for exploration, adventure, learning, books, mystery and magic. I study and practice the sacred oracular crafts of Tarot, Lenormand and astrology, and have done so for over 15 years. I also practice a nature based spirituality, honouring the cycles of the Moon, Sun, seasons and the inherent magic and wonder of our Mother Earth.

This was brilliant Monica. You are so on point sweet lady. It seems like this certain energy goes around in this community from time to time because their are so many that just want to judge others for their choices in their lives rather than just taking accountability for their own choices and actions. I do not come to this community to always feel judged by others. I come here to join in with like minded individuals who can bond over our love of tarot, metaphysical, and the joys in our lives. I also feel the same way about valuing something. We talk about income inequality and that is very valid however when we fail to see the value in artists and authors and small businesses we are doing exactly the thing we are fighting against. Thank you for this beautiful video. 😍

Spot on and thank you for your sentiments, I wasn't sure if I was going to post it but now I am glad I did, even though it's a bit of a slow ramble (glad I filmed it before I finished my gin though hehe!) Thank you 😊💜

I'm so glad the algorithm suggested this to me - what a lovely video! Thank you for sharing your experiences. I can see why you find this deck soothing and in alignment with your values. It's beautiful. For me the Witches' Wisdom is like this. I'm happy to have found your channel and newly subscribed.

Thank you for such lovely feedback 😊 and for your support, I hope you enjoy what my channel has to offer. The Gaian Tarot is an old time favourite of mine and after all these years, my relationship with it just gets better 💜

This was such a beautiful and thoughtful video. Thank you so much for bringing a grown-up perspective to this topic. Tarot is important for most of us, but it’s not food and shelter. ❤

Thank you Dawn Michelle, initially I was a bit hesitant to post it (but what will people think of my gin drinking?!! haha) but now I am glad I have. One of my greatest joys is being the caretaker of tarot decks and supporting the artists that create them 😊

And thank you back for watching and for your support. I am glad the gin didn't make me mix my words and thoughts too much haha, though it was a slow process 😊

Watched this video from my hotel in Kyoto, Japan! Nice to see a gin and tonic instead of a tea 😄 I am missing my tarot decks as much as I'm missing my fur babies 😅 and hubby!

Gosh how lovely I am "with you" in Japan 😊 I hope you find some great tarot decks over there, or at least some decent Japanese incense and tea blends 🙂 and let's not mention Roku Gin, shall we hahaha!

Imo if anyone wants to buy an indie deck that’s their business. I don’t look at peoples collection and judge them. I may say it’s a nice deck and hope we can discuss tarot and other interests. Hearing you talk about that deck, it could cost $500 and still be worth it. I think it’s awesome! ❤

Exactly. I actually loved it so much I bought the mainstream version from Llewellyn when it came out, which was well done and unfortunately is also now out of print. Then it was published by Schiffer, but I have read the quality is not that good though I can't confirm this. Either way - it is an incredible deck and work of art that conveys my feelings and vision for our world completely. Thank you for watching 😊

The indie Gaian is also my most expensive deck and like you, I don’t regret purchasing it at all. I bought it, not just because I loved the deck whose images spoke to me body, mind, soul, but because I wanted to support the artist, Joanna Powell Colbert, and her work and the way the deck was produced. It’s a beautiful, beautiful deck and will always be in my top five decks. Thank for this heartfelt video. Btw, I spilled a cup of tea on the Gaian which was in its handmade bag at the time, and didn’t realize it. So
I cleaned up the tea and it wasn’t until much later I realized some of it had gotten on the Gaian bag and deck 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ The deck ended up being fine a bit of color from the lining of the bag got onto
the edges of a few of the cards, but the deck is fine. That was sort of an interesting experience that gave me food for thought. Oh wow! I just spilled tea on my most valuable deck!! I still haven’t stopped drinking tea while reading tarot!!!! And probably never will. Thanks for this discussion and for sharing our beloved Gaian Tarot. 💚🌍💚 Agree with you about the cost of food, housing, and healthcare and basic living expenses are much more of a concern as you point out.

I'm with you on the tea drinking/spilling 😂 A few months back I knocked over a full cup of coffee on my tarot table and I had a long out of print Lenormand that got stained with it. And you know what - I actually love it is now a worn, stained deck and still use it regularly, and STILL drink my cup of coffee in semi darkness in the morning as I shuffle my cards haha.
I think we share a common love of the Gaian tarot and the energy and the vision it stands for. Above all, I think it makes me feel less alone in my perception of the world, and it is heart-warming to know there is a whole global community out there of people that are working towards that same shared vision, in spite of all the vicissitudes that life keeps throwing at us 😊💜

I agree, lets get worked up about the price of other things, like a roof over your head. I consider tarot essential as well, and luckily there are so many beautiful well priced decks out there, attacking creators for the price they put on them is bad form. I also studied environmental studies and spent a bit of time near where you live. I once lived at Airlie beach for about 6 months. Similar feelings towards the Gaian tarot. One of a kind. Best wishes.

Yes at the time (and long before the indie deck obsession took off), her indie deck was very highly priced (keep in mind this is also a decade ago, so even more back then). I felt any criticism thrown at her for the cost of the deck was very poor form, indeed.
I spent 10 years in the Whitsundays and still hold it close to my heart. Thank you for watching and supporting my channel 💜

Thank you so much for this thoughtful addition to the conversation. Value is such a good point that so many people miss when they complain about the cost of things. Sadly, society values other things much higher than art. It takes many artists hours and hours to do their work. I’m a writer and it takes me over 1000 hours to ghostwrite a novel. And people want to pay $150 for that?!?! That’s not lowballing, that’s a straight slap across the face insult. Yet they’ll pace $5k or more for someone to code a homepage that takes them 40 minutes of time. How is that justified? I personally would rather spend money on 78 pieces of art that I can use as a tool for the rest of my life and pass down to someone else than spend hundreds on a pair of shoes that I wear through in two months. Yet no one complains about $250 sneakers.

I agree with your sentiments, Katrina. I grew up with grandmothers who were able to sew or knit amazing garments, and cook and bake fantastic dishes from scratch. I look back and see how lucky I was to experience "home made" and thus value and appreciate a person's effort, in any sphere of life.
Only this morning I was at the local markets, and overheard someone exclaim the cost of the vendor's vegetables was "expensive" - I couldn't help remarking to the farmer "I bet they never tried growing a vegetable - successfully!" They smiled a very understanding nod. Whether writing, farming or tarot deck creation - the past few decades of off-shoring work to cheap alternatives has given people a really false impression of the value of "human made". I refuse to succumb to this "race to the bottom".
