  • This week's etude is a re-do of an older video that I uploaded before I knew how to get the score on the screen. Hopefully now it will be easier for everyone to follow along!
    I wanted to re-record it for a few reasons, chief among them that it was selected as one of the etudes for TMEA All-State this year. If you have any questions about preparing this etude for the audition, put them in the comments below!

    Scott you are amazing!!! Your tone is so beautiful reminds me of my horn instructor back in high school. This piece was used my Sr. Year for all state too. I would love to hear more of your music.😀

      Hello!
      My answer for lip trills is below in another comment. Definitely check that out!
      For the lip slurs, I recommend finding as many different flexibility and interval study exercises as possible. Perhaps you've come across Remington or Chicowitz exercises, and it's important to them every day but ascending and descending (most of the time they are printed only descending!)
      You also will need some strength in order to keep your embouchure form collapsing as you play high, so long tones in any register will help a lot!

    *Scott, what is your mic setup?? It sounds AWESOME!!*

    • @ScottLegerHorn
      @ScottLegerHorn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks! So I'm using a Blue Yeti to record everything. It's just off-camera on a mic stand at mouthpiece level.
      I have an EQ setting in Logic that flattens the frequency response of the Yeti so that the sound is more even. I also was lucky enough to make some reference recordings in a couple of our halls at the New World Center before the lockdown and made a reverb setting that emulates those spaces. It isn't perfect, but it makes a really plausible sound that adds a lot of life to the dry sound.
      That said though, the dry sound on the Yeti is surprisingly accurate. I just got a Rode NT1A and a new audio interface that I'm going to start messing with.

    Any advice for a student to be able to trill faster? I can lip trill but it isn't near as quick, long lasting, and clean as yours.

    • @ScottLegerHorn
      @ScottLegerHorn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      With lip trills, you basically need to work on two things: flexibility and control.
      To work on control, you should try adding a daily exercise like Kopprasch etude No. 5, in all keys (each fingering on the horn) and try to gradually increase the speed at which you play the etude.
      To work on flexibility, you can try the trills in short burst, playing 1 turn, then 2 and so on, in each key, every day. The goal is to gradually increase the numbers of turns you can achieve in one burst so that the trill can be fast and start immediately.
      But no matter what speed you play lip trills at, they should be musical and fit into the context of the music. Admittedly this is something I struggle with, as, in my attempt to make my trills as fast as possible, there are some circumstances where a slower more gentle trill is appropriate.

      @@ScottLegerHorn do you have advice for a "belty" low register and clean high notes too? I'm sorry for asking so much haha. My low range is big but it isn't as crisp and responsive as I'd like it to be. As for my high range, a high C is on the edge of my range. Being able to play a high D♭ out of the blues is always a huge gamble for me. Do you know good exercises? Thank you or your time.

    • @ScottLegerHorn
      @ScottLegerHorn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@roytiie4408 You are not alone in the high Db haha. A really easy thing to do to help response in the low register is short, loud (like as loud as possible) air attacked notes. We're usually slow to move our air in the low register, and that exercise can help speed things up.
      Building your upper range takes a long time, but I think a big help is slurring up and down the natural harmonic series on each fingering as high and low as you can go. It doesn't take a lot of air to play high, but it does take fast air, and a natural slur is basically an exercise in changing the speed of your air.

      Scott Leger Horn How do I know if a mouthpiece is right for my lips? I moved schools so i don’t have my old mouthpiece because i lended it to a friend but i’m not used to the current one i have, the articulating feels really off. is it just me or does a mouthpiece affect this? I know most of the articulation is from the player but with this mouthpiece my attacks seem more soft than sharp.

    • @higherfasterlouder
      @higherfasterlouder 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A mouthpiece can definitely change your articulation. Normally, I would recommend that you find a couple of different models and try them to see what works, but unfortunately with COVID-19 restrictions that might be difficult.
      If you remember what model your old mouthpiece was, I would try to find a copy again. If not here’s a list of a few mouthpieces I think are really good “middle of the road” options:
      Schilke 30
      Houghton Verus V1
      Laskey 80G
      Bach 7
      Houser Johnathan Ring SF
