OGK Returns! Long Feeding Visit By Royal Albatross Parent |

- After more than 4 weeks, the father of the Northern Royal Albatross chick returned to feed. According to rangers from the New Zealand Dept. of Conservation, he appears to be unfortunately injured; hopefully this is superficial and he can recover from this. We have no way of knowing what has happened while he was out over the ocean, but the fact that he returned and fed the chick and flew away from the colony are at least positive developments.

Royal Cam is a 24-hour live stream of a Northern Royal Albatross nest during the breeding season at Pukekura/Taiaroa Head on the southeast tip of New Zealand's South Island.
The season of 2019/2020 has seen the Royal Cam once again move up the hill. Now at Top Flat Track our new pair is OGK (banded Orange, Green, Black) a 21 year old male and YRK (banded Yellow, Red, Black) and 25 year old female. YRK laid the egg on 14 November 2019.
This season the live stream has partnered with Cornell Bird Lab. There are some new features including a trial of night vision and the ability to pan and zoom the camera at the rangers discretion.

So sad, that he is injured, his left leg seems really bad, and he also has an injury on his neck, even with his voice something seems wrong.....at least he was able to come back home.....hopefully someone can help him!! 😞😔 Pippa is so happy that dad is back, talking to him nonstop.....🙏🏼🐥

One year later, how's the dad? Was he seen again? Has he recovered from the injury? I so sincerely hope, he did. 😟

an interesting conversation between the two.. I felt like he was telling her in some sense; she communicated a great deal to dad! I do hope it’s not the last we see of him.

I feel so sorry for the dad. I was wondering how he was going to get back up that little hill, but then he went down again. I hope his leg heals. This was sad to see him having so much trouble, but also happy to see them together.

I was watching real carefully when he left our baby and it looked like one or both legs were swollen especially the right leg.I had enlarged my screen so I could see better.
What's going on with dad? Is someone gonna help him??
The DOC did search the headland for the male, but he was not found. He's likely returned to sea at this point. Best case scenario is that his injury is superficial and that we see that the bird has recovered during his next feeding visit.

The adults only return from the sea to feed their chick at this stage. In the male's absence over the last 4 weeks, the female has filled in with plenty of feedings, and we expect she will continue to do so. After searching, OGK (the male) was not found on the headland, meaning he's probably returned to sea. We hope that he recovers soon and that we see him return to the nest site in the near future.
