I recently moved here from Southern California and I absolutely love how easy it is to get around here. I live near the red line so I can get to almost anywhere in the DMV area by foot. Not every state has this luxury and that’s what makes it so unique!

I was born & raised in SS. Sadly I had to move away in 1992, in my mid 30s, due to my husband's job. I've been gone over 30 years now. I am in a constant state of severe home sickness. There honestly is 'no place like home'. ❤😢

I lived in Silver Springs for a whole year, and the only con I found was the cost of living as I quickly got used to the easy and convenient public transportation.

Silver Spring (SS) used to be one of the best areas to reside in the DMV; however, escalating crime rates have now ravaged certain areas, particularly downtown SS; Veterans Plaza, the heart of SS, is now a high-traffic open-air drug market. (You can Google search articles about it). Also, it is not very diverse at all, as it is mainly an Ethiopian population, as another commenter noted. SS has changed a lot over the past decade, as it used to be safe and culturally diverse.

Thank you for such a great description. Walking wise, how safe is it? My son is autistic he doesnt want to drive a car and enjoys the transit instead.

I used to live there and its quite annoying and I don’t recommend it. The only pro of living there is safety. The comment about the place being diverse is a lie. That place is 95 percent Ethiopian. If your from that community, it’s an awesome area.
If your not, here’s what you will find.
The area in general has a frugal mindset. I’ve never in my life been to shopping malls that don’t fix escalators, stores that don’t run air conditioning in the summer time, large establishments that don’t have wifi. Customers in line arguing about items ringing up 50 cents higher than the price they thought they saw on the shelf. I was ready to snap, I had to go from that area 😅
The Uber drivers will pick you up in 90 degree weather with the window down.. unbothered. Not to mention the constant language barrier and 90 percent of the restaurants in the area being tailored to the African community. Again, if your from Africa (not black American) literally from Africa, Silver Spring is the place for you! You’ll love it!!!!!
If your a traditional American, you will get frustrated beyond belief trying to live there.
Lastly, the apartment I used to live in downtown would crank the heat on 80 degree days and we had no control over it.
You’d see Ethiopian tenants still walking through the building with leather jackets and beanies on… in 80 degree weather, with the heat on.
By the way, I have nothing against that. It’s their culture. One guy told me “we like it hot like Africa”
But if that’s not what your accustomed to, you will lose your mind trying to fit in in that area.

I’m African and live in SS and I can agree with the majority of the points made. Also, I was cracking up reading this 😂

@@Above101 haha it’s definitely no disrespect either! I’m mature enough to understand everyone has their own preferences.

I have to move there because of my wife and kids. I will be a minority. My wife is African. I am Caucasian. Will I be hated because of this?

I have lived in many places in DMV, and now I am living in Silver Spring. Your comment seems overly exaggerated. -- Broken escalator in a shopping mall? When I go shopping they seems to be working. Escalators brakes every where, metro, shopping malls, ... every where. To begin with there are I think only 2-3 shopping malls in SS the begist begin Wheato mall.
-- For the 95% Ethiopian you mentioned, it is because where you must have seen your 95% is around fenton rd/st where there are a number of Ethiopian restaurants
      - I don't know what kind of apartment you got yourself into with no AC at 80 degrees. Certainly it will not be one of these expensive apparments near downtown. For your information, with the exception of the northern tip part, Africa is not too hot or dessert like but rather sunny and very nice temperature as it is closer to earth equator. Since you named Ethiopian a lot, almost year round, the temperature in Ethiopia is around 65-75 degrees fahrenheit, which you might find only in some places in California, Florida, Jamaica, Mexico, ...
      - There are all kinds of restaurants in SS. In this video, I think it was mentioned that there are around 150 restaurants in Silver Spring. So if one can't find what he or she like in 150 restaurants, maybe we need to figure out the problem here.
-- For the Uber driver, what does that have to do SS?
Life is too short to run around angry and putting people down, in our insecure minds.
Have a good life, I intend to stay in SS for few years atleast.

I'd like it better if I could find a job! Five months now, no work; I've never been unemployed this long before. If you're not black or Hispanic you'll be at a disadvantage. It was a mistake moving here.
