Nice job Shane, agreed on all your rules. Two simple ones to add:
1) Sleep on any purchase idea before hitting the trigger. A strict rule to wait 24 hours minimum before showing the hard cashwon't prevent you from making mistakes, but it sure helps weed a lot out.
2) With your significant other, it's easier to seek forgiveness than permission😁

Point 1 (sleep on) is total BS. The more I think about watch, the less I love it. My most adorable watches were bought by heart impulse, not by thinking on them.

I stopped at 75 watches ⌚️. I like them all. Sometimes I'll wear the same watch for several days, and Sometimes I'll change watches three times in a single day.

Great advice Shane, unlike some of your colleagues who say only buy watches you have to “save” for, I agree with you. Even though I now look for deals on pieces “up” the scale, I will NEVER sell my early purchases. Those Seikos, Orients, Deep Blues etc. are part of my watch journey! They remind me of where I was in life when I bought them, or received as a gift from a loved one. As you say, it’s a marathon 👍

It's refreshing to see some watch related content without the need to keep introducing another new watch every time, we are all together in this journey and sometimes a change of pace is needed just for the sake of it, cheers man.

This is a great watch community service video and kind of connects with me like your video a few years back "What is a Real Watch - an Argument for Affordables" that reminds us to buy what we like. Rule #1 is first for a very good reason. No deal is good enough if you pay interest on the purchase. All good rules and I especially like #7. Thanks for all you do.

You nailed it with each rule Shane. We are all guilty of breaking some of these rules at some point, as this hobby doesn't really make sense to begin with.
I think rule #3 is the most important one - don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try different things. In the end it's about having fun - and the best way to have fun is to try things you never thought you would. I love my two-tone quartz Mickey Mouse watch almost as much as I love my badass Hamilton Khaki field watch.
Probably the best video I've watched in year's man😃 you're soooo right. I understand exactly where you're coming from and I need to sell lot's. Not what I need or want and because I don't need as many,it gets addictive I think but collecting needs a more relaxed method 😬

Great video. One thing I’ve enjoyed is creating the normal wear and tear marks and scratches that makes my watch truly unique. This is incredibly difficult with a large collection.

@@RelativeTimeI was going back and forth about purchasing a Seiko MM 300 SBDX023 or MM200 Reduced SBDC127 and finally made the decision and purchased the MM200. I couldn't justify spending $2500 on the MM300 compared to $850 for the MM200 especially when the MM200 has a 70 hour power reserve and the MM300 only has a 50. The price of the MM300 is out of my budget and don't have that much saved to spend on a watch of that caliber. None of my watches in my collection exceed over $1000 in price. I am definitely trying to stay within my means when purchasing any current or future watches for my collection which keeps me from stressing out on debt and I can enjoy my timepieces without feeling guilty or having to sell off others I don't really want to part with 😀!

Great advice. #9 Buy Low, Sell High is usually learned through experience. Until a person gains enough familiarity with the market, they won’t be confidant enough to move quickly when a desirable bargain appears. My previous price limit had been about $500, but when I saw reviews of the Zelos Spearfish GMT, I was comfortable raising my price limit and making an immediate purchase.

I live vicariously through everyone else I only have one automatic but I collected when I was younger got a collection but rarely wear anything other than my wise I watched videos for about a year before I knew which one was for me . If I get more I get more but I’m satisfied with what I have regardless . Thanks for your content I appreciate your take 🙏

Some great advice there across all 10 points. Being patient in the early stages of collecting is important. Just buy 1 and then get saving for something nice and then you won't be looking at ten watches and thinking I could have bought that special piece instead of ten starter watches. Although this does help you figure out your preferences.

Great lessons here, well done. Took me a while to learn that while I love automatics, I actually now prefer the accuracy and grab and go convenience of precision quartz movements.
I've started to come around to that myself. It is really nice to be able to pick somethng up and not wonder if the time is right.

I think rule #2 is one that doesn't get mentioned enough. I view money spent on watches like money spent on entertainment, once it's spent, it's gone forever. If I sell a watch and get a few dollars to put toward another watch that's great, but I never buy with the intention of getting the money back out of a watch.

I have a small watch collection and, because I'm a pensioner, it takes me about a year to save up enough to buy a watch in my self imposed price range- about £600 to £900!
I definitely need a watch! I have always had one on my wrist from boyhood to now and I'm now 76.
If your era is the high tech world of mobile phones then, yes, I agree with your statement, but in my day before all that, I would have been late for everything. Particularly when I was in the army. I wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes! I have a mobile phone that I barely tolerate, as a necessity. Most of the time I leave it on my bedside locker and pick up my text messages and missed calls when I remember to check.
I don't buy watches for their value but for their aesthetics. For instance, I currently have 4 citizen bullheads and I just love them but a watch I wear all the time is a casio radio controlled, solar powered watch.
It is totally reliable and deadly accurate, thanks to the radio control.
It is the cheapest of my serious watches by a large margin!
I don't even think about the high end multi thousand pound watches. I can't afford one, so what's the point!

Nice video. I came across your channel while researching the Bulova Jet Star. I really like your approach and thoughts on watches. I find too many get caught up in brand/price and specs, and lose sight of basics like, “do I like this?”

My main rule is: see it,try it and if you like it...buy it. Of course, agreed on all Shane's rules. So simple,yet we always break (some of) them. Another valuable Shane's contribution to the world of watches.
Good set of suggestions! There are some universal/essentials here, but also some unique tips (e.g. PayPal rules).
It's hard to argue with any of your points, in fact they're all spot on, buy what you like and like what you buy, and NEVER go into debt, for 95% of us this is a hobby not a business.

Great rules. I am a bit sceptical about reviewers though. I think the rule should be: Find the reviewers you trust. A lot of them are just promoting the watch that was given to them and some would do everything to get a free watch even from Aliexpress. The ones watching this channel know that Shane is the guy we can rely on. No place to advertise others here :)

Excellent points made. I'm at the point in my collecting to where I usually gift a watch when buying a new one. I enjoy passing the watch to someone who I know will enjoy it and see the watch go on a new journey. I also look at a potential purchase to see if there is something in my collection I can upgrade. My blue dial Seiko quartz SUR309 would be an option to get its automatic counterpart or save up for the grail Grand Seiko that shares its characteristics. Another point I make is to imagine how, where, and why I wear a specific watch. If I can't logically see more than one occasion to wear it, I don't buy it.
Sound advice there for anyone, I got into watches a back door way as I make small leather goods and was asked to make a few watch straps, then I started watchmaking and still not owning my own watch and after a few years started building my own watches with parts sauced on eBay, I even silvered a old 1/2 penny for a dial for a birth watch for my wife,
Not sure when my journey will end but still enjoying it and my favourite watch is a Oris bronze pointer, fascinated how the bronze ages with tones of yellow orange and browns
My biggest tip would be if you like a watch hold on to your money for a couple of weeks and if you still want it then you won’t be making a wrong choice

A well thought through list, I think all the rules are good. I would only add that although it is good to try something different, it is worth asking is will I actually wear this? Will I choose this watch over the other ones in the box?
Excellent list Shane. Agree with them all. As regards pleasing yourself and not trying to impress, I have a Seamaster because I like it, but hardly anyone will comment on it. I also have a yellow dial Steeldive Tuna as the colour really got me and I kid you not, literally everyone notices it and compliments it. My most expensive one, nobody cares. my cheapest automatic, everyone loves it. One lesson I learned is 38mm and below is not for me, they just look too small. I also get more comments on my G-Shock Mudmaster! As you say we should all try to be sensible!

Invicta, I have a lot of those. One specificallu is a quartz chrono with the most spectacular yellow dial i have ever seen. I love it. But I have a lot of seikos too.
Few good rules here. I barely ever buy something without looking at reviews first, so 6 is very important. I am now dealing with rule nr. 10 because I have bought 11 watches in the last four months, but I have promised my self to slow down :)

All good points Shane. As a "Collector" "Watch Enthusiasts", I would love a Rolex, any Rolex, but I'm not playing that game. Your point that not to go into debt, I would payout a Seiko Spring Drive, for a year. I'm going to be buried with it LOL. I'm about case material, dials, hands and movements. My flagship watch is The Omega 2222.80. I would not trade it for all the money in the world..... Almost.

Good Advise Shane, I have loss more money than I care to think about but what I’m coming to understand is what kind of watch I want to wear.
I mean you get the wife anger for free but I'm lucky, mine supports my obsession / habit / addiction. Dropped a watch off for service today at the AD and came home with a gold 40mm PRX but to be fair I've been hunting for one ever since I saw one reviewed and it doesn't disappoint on the wrist. Because some of those rabbit holes are fun to go down and right now I'm on an anachronistic watch kick. Solid video.
It's cool to really know what you like, not because the influence of somebody or some group or social media.

I would add “Expect to be disappointed by any Kickstarter watch.” No matter how good it looks (whether specs, value, etc.) your hopes and expectations just tick up during that extremely extended wait time … such that it’s inevitably a disappointment when it arrives. I have acquired only one that wasn’t somewhat of a disappointment so I am now really really trying to avoid Kickstarter or - at least - to better dampen those expectations. V best G

Great video as always. I would be interested in a video specifically about how to not buy watches. Like tricks you use to talk yourself out of it. I see so many watches I want to buy and have been trying to save for better quality items for my collection. The struggle is real!
That's a good idea for a video. Right now I'm struggling a little bit with the new gold brew Metric Chrono. I usually don't like gold watches, but that one looks really slick. So far I've resisted by reminding that I bought two recently, and I really should sell something before buying another. I'm hoping that works long enough until they sell out.

Well. Said. One additional thing that I consider, is personal attraction and story. I have a Seiko quartz, the 6923-8080 Quartz SPD094 Roger Moore wore in the James Bond movie, "A View To A Kill" (1985). It's even on the original hollow two tone bracelet. I have it not because it's a 'Bond' (!) watch. I have it because it was my Dad's. I don't think he ever realized it was in a Bond movie. I think he just walked up to a department store counter and bought it because he liked it. And everytime I put it on, it reminds me of him. Of all my watches in collection, and any 'grail' watch I may get in the future, that Seiko is and always will be my favorite. And I wear it proudly. :)

Really sound advice
My most important rule is "never buy on impulse." (I have tendency to fall in love with watch when I see it, only to go back couple days/weeks later and realize it's not for me)
I would expand upon rule 8, if the seller wants to use Friends and Family (F&F), ask if they will use Goods and Services (G&S) but add a percentage to cover the difference to the price, usually 3.5%. I've used F&F many times in private groups where I may not be friends with the person but I know they are active in the community and the group will hold them responsible. To a limit that is, then its G&S.
Those are some beautiful watches......

As far as watches go, to each man his own. I like all watches and really I enjoy my own watches as I enjoy discovering on other people wrists what do they wear. Because I am that kind of guy. Not snobby but just interested in your choice. :)

I bought the ice monster from the review on this channel, Sold it. Bought the Kamasu based on this channel. Put a jubilee on it. Must have. Have the Hamilton khaki field Auto as my first +£450, absolutely love it. Great field watch.
Bought a Rado Captain Cook. The most commented on watch i own. My Longines Hydroconquest. A watch that's been knocked off my top spot by my Tudor Ranger.
But. I go back to my Alpinist more often than not.
Watches are Subjective. Individual.
Own one. Just don't own an Apple watch

The two I like are a Tudor Oyster Prince, purchased new in 1976, and a
William L, 1985 telemetre.
I wear the Tudor as my everyday watch.
