Amen brother! As I was just telling John, I thought I had one of those lurking under way too much plaster, but it turns out it was a pretty mundane modern knife with a beech handle and steel rivets. I was so let down!
This video really hit home with me. The moment you said your father loved putty knives, I thought about my own father who worked part time painting houses in the summer (in the 50-60’s). He could replace a broken window in minutes using a putty knife and a red can of white putty. After watching you, I braved the cold to go out to the garage to make sure I knew where his 2 putty knives were kept in my home shop. Thanks for the memories!👍
I love scrapers and putty knives. I especially like the wood handled tools. I always pick them up when I see them at yard sales and thrift store. Always.
Again, beautiful old-time tools that looks so refined and today's generic simplified version of some tools that, has no soul when you take it in the hand... Absolutely beautiful restoration. Greetings from Serbia
You've been saying a while that all these old hand scraping, putty, spackle knives and what not are better than what's in the stores now. Amen to that...
I know you don’t like metal on wood, but man does that look awesome! The brass pins really showcase the wood. I would never have had the courage to take the blade down past the pitting, but you showed us all how it’s done properly. Thanks!!
That looks great! I cannot believe how nice it turned out after the shape it was in. I agree, tools are rarely made as well as the did years ago. Thanks for sharing this.
I bought one of those replacement razor screw driver handle units maybe 15 yrs ago. Craftsmen and the handle was clear so you knew if there were extra blades left. Best darn window sticker remover ever!
Wow. What a beautiful knife. Rosewood is probably my favorite wood. Like George Harrison's Telecaster. And combining that with brass and steel. Mwaa! Great job, of course. As usual, after watching your video, now I want to go back and redo my putty knife from a few weeks ago.
I bought that exact Blue Point putty knife 29 years ago for removing gaskets and as a skin wedge to pry and hammer skins apart. The wood got replaced with phenolic about 6 months in. It is a 3rd shorter now so I recently bought a new 3 piece set. I love my Lisle razorblade scraper too, it is worlds above anything else. Nice job on the pretty putty knife!
Always love watching restoring putty knives reminds me of my dad. He was a painter for a local college. He carried one in his white overalls for years. My brother still lives in the old house. I need to find one of his. Thanks for the memories. Stay safe and healthy my friend.
Greetings from the Philippines!I love watching all your videos esply.on the tools restoration, flea market and topics on vintage collectable items. Thanks for sharing your knowledge,Take care and God bless.
When I was younger I would go around the neighborhood finding ways to make money and one day I found out you could make money reglazing windows I went around the neighborhood looking for houses with the glazing needing attention I made enough money to buy my first motorcycle that spring and summer a lot of old ladies paid me good money and told their friends I ended up glazing windows and painting all summer I bought my first street bike when I turned 18 from that a Honda 750 four used but nice bike your video brought that memory back
Great video! I think this was one of the best restorations you ever done. I also liked the segment about the birdbath. I thought that was very interesting. 😃👍
Nice job. Those plastic ones are mostly used for ink on printing presses. They dont mare the ink metering blade on the ink fountains. We call them puddy knives too down here in MD.
In Massachusetts we definitely say puddy knife. Ive been living in Los Angeles for 30 years and still say puddy knife. Stiff blades are scrapers the spring blades puddy. That does look like a beautiful Rosewood handle. Fantastic work.
Another great job Devil Dog!! A little help in keeping your water dishes from freezing is to use black plastic. It absorbs the heat from the sun to keep them ice free. We used to paint our horse troughs black in the winter and silver in the summer. Need to build a quansit hut for the bird feed next year. 👍
Wow that’s beautiful, I really feel sad about the stuff that’s made today I mean I can’t even find kitchen utensils that are made today that are as nice as that putty knife handle.
Wow that’s a real quality knife anything with brass metal and wood you know It was expensive back in the day what I wouldn’t give to go back to some of those Old shops and bye that knife amazing scout great video have a great weekend God bless take care ✋🇳🇿🙏🗽🇺🇸💪
ScoutCrafter got me into buying older/antique hand tools. I clean mine up and make them useable but not to his restoration level. I progressed on to rehabbing old kerosene Coleman camp stoves and lanterns. I also rehab old kerosene blow torch's. A great way to keep busy and do something unique.
Looks great! Putty knives are always way harder then they seem. I think I've got to revisit the one I did as one of my first restorations. But the tool tote comes first now! I hope you'll have great weekend!
That putty knife turned out swell. Does anyone say swell anymore? Thanks for showing my work. I retired from the Texas DMV. There are over 22 million vehicles registered in Texas. Each one gets a new window sticker every year. Part of my job was to receive the inventory of all those stickers from the manufacturer.
Puddy knife looks great!! Wanted to thank you the other day on the scissor sharpening lesson... with the light on the edge. Holy cow what a difference. I have an old pair of USA Wiss that I just love to use. I attempted a sharpening a while back but .. well they just didn’t sharpen. But now.... that satisfying cut all the way to the tips.. ahhhh how nice! Thanks again!!!
Fadher! Hahaha! Puddy. =) I use Bar Keepers Friend on high carbon steel blades. Removes most stains. Leaves them with a light gray color. Then, they polish well.
I also wish I had been born 50 to 100 years in the past. As great as it is to have access to everything we have today, I really feel that our grandfathers had the best life and were always so calm and accepting of their lot in life.
That's a real good job on the putty knife. The blade turned out over the top wow. I kind of wish you showed how you did the handle, I want to see how you clean the wood around the brass. It turned out great.
This is so well timed, I was just working on the few putty knives I have a couple of days before I spotted your vid. My 'utility' putty knives just needed a quick touchup to remove spots of rust but I discovered my FIL's one the other day in a bag of tools that looked like a quality old one so I was really looking forward to giving it a facelift like this. Believe it or not it was even dirtier! Mostly white in this case with lumps of old plaster, but underneath I thought I spotted the telltale colour of rosewood so I was excited to see how that would look cleaned, and expected some nice brass rivets to go along with the quality wood..... turns out it was just coloured varnish over beech And to make it even more mundane the rivets were just steel LOL
My gosh, I remember as a teenager my dad showed my how to set "points" to hold window glass and how to reputty the windows. Very labor intensive. "it's still stiff" that's what she said!!!
I definitely agree with you! Where did we go wrong and why??...I’m always looking at my tools compared to my wife’s grandfather’s older tools and wondering why this country went the cheap way!!!
I’ve got quite a few of the lovely old , well I call them scrapers. To me a putty knife has a point and a couple of reverse curves .Scrapers have fan shaped down to parallel shaped blades. But the old ones have fantastic steel, and they can have a knife sharp edge but are so flexible. Hot air gun or blowtorch and lift off all that lead paint!! Yum
John, i feel the same way. Go from good american made products to plastic throw away china crap! You dont see any professional drywallers using plastic putty knives! Cant wait to see your toolbox challenge. At least it will be made in the USA! 🇺🇸👍Roger
We went fromCrafts Tradesmen to DIY. For $1.59 any unskilledperson can sling mud on a nail hole and say "WhoooHOOOOO! I did it and saved $50.00." That works well when you learn and practice the Trade/art, but so often it's not the case. We cheaped out on quality of workmanship and the results ate evident.
Nice job, yeah you don't see those beauties in the store any more. That really came out better than I expected! We sell those plastic ones at the store I work at, arghh, why?
I have a plastic handled putty knife that has been cracked with some of the pieces missing and than duct taped together. Guess I'll have to fabricate a new handle for it. Wish me luck! Jim
Hahaha I literally just did 5 of these earlier today they had all kinds of stuff on them they where all Hyde brand haha awesome we must be on the same page
Nice job. I have to agree, plastic is aweful. People want everything cheap these days so they can throw away when the job is done. I like to have tools that I can be proud of and keep them looking good.
Nice video John. I don’t know how true it is but I have heard that if you take a small water bottle and put salt water in it and place it in your bird bath the water won’t freeze 🤷🏼♂️. If you try it let me know if it works 😂 Thank You for sharing!
before the pandemic i was finding great old putty knives at the flea market. i like the flexible ones but the stiff blades have their purpose. i love wire wheeling the old crud off the blade and seeing made in the USA. i like to research the company so i can get a idea of the age.
I love putty knives! You can't go wrong with steel, brass and wood tools!
I watched this and thought Magdad will be all over this. I pushed comments and you were first in line!!😂
I absolutely enjoy these videos..
Amen brother!
As I was just telling John, I thought I had one of those lurking under way too much plaster, but it turns out it was a pretty mundane modern knife with a beech handle and steel rivets. I was so let down!
Your positivity and passion for your craft is wonderful to watch. I always look forward to your videos.

Your genuine kindness to all different animals is such a blessing to see. Thank you for being a decent human being. 🙏✝️

You've been saying a while that all these old hand scraping, putty, spackle knives and what not are better than what's in the stores now. Amen to that...
Awesome looking Puddy Knife. Tools were made so much better back then. I have a few old ones I gotta dig out and have a second look at.
That’s how a tool should look! Rosewood and brass go together like peanut butter and jelly. :)
As usual, great job!
I know you don’t like metal on wood, but man does that look awesome! The brass pins really showcase the wood. I would never have had the courage to take the blade down past the pitting, but you showed us all how it’s done properly. Thanks!!
That turned out so nice!
Great tip about continuing to go after those pits!
Mag dad will be salivating when he sees, the wood, metal and brass😁...
It's nice that you look after the birds. My wife does here in Scotland and it gives us so much pleasure.
That’s a really nice “puddy” knife! The large brass rivets really make it pop! Have a great weekend!
Wow. What a beautiful knife. Rosewood is probably my favorite wood. Like George Harrison's Telecaster. And combining that with brass and steel. Mwaa!
Great job, of course. As usual, after watching your video, now I want to go back and redo my putty knife from a few weeks ago.
You're videos are like a 15 minute stress oasis. Thanks again for the upload.
Stunning quality on that putty knife. Lovely restoration.

I’m glad to have found you post-pan. I had some trouble as I had forgotten your moniker. Keep ‘em coming and thank you for the inspiration.

Hello Jhun! Thanks so much!
When I was younger I would go around the neighborhood finding ways to make money and one day I found out you could make money reglazing windows I went around the neighborhood looking for houses with the glazing needing attention I made enough money to buy my first motorcycle that spring and summer a lot of old ladies paid me good money and told their friends I ended up glazing windows and painting all summer I bought my first street bike when I turned 18 from that a Honda 750 four used but nice bike your video brought that memory back
Im 56 now lol
Wow! Who ever thought a putty knife could be that beautiful!
Excellent work! Simple but very rewarding...
Doesn't matter what happens, hanging along whilst scroutcrafter is having a good time is always, a good time.
Great video! I think this was one of the best restorations you ever done. I also liked the segment about the birdbath. I thought that was very interesting. 😃👍
Your so right, to many people want everything cheap like the plastic putty knife.
Have a Jesus filled day everyone
Greg in Michigan
Great job on this one! The brass and rosewood look incredible and almost new again!
What a great restoration John! There is nothing like a vintage Putty knives.
That turned out great! The 5 in one painters tool is my favorite "puddy" knife. Cheers
I enjoyed the Putty Knife restoration. It looks awesome. As far as the tool tote I have not started. Maybe tomorrow.
I agree that cleaning up my putty knives, scrapers and trowels, is very satisfying.
I have a few. My favorites are the wooden handled ones like this one, with brass bolsters and rivets.
Nice job. Those plastic ones are mostly used for ink on printing presses. They dont mare the ink metering blade on the ink fountains. We call them puddy knives too down here in MD.

That's a magdad tribute special.. so beautiful..
Heard an older gentleman (older than me, and that’s old!) LOL, say “progress is great, but now it needs to stop!”.......and I agree!

1st class scraper and 1st class restoration !!! Geeeeee !!! Love the birds also
Wow that’s beautiful, I really feel sad about the stuff that’s made today I mean I can’t even find kitchen utensils that are made today that are as nice as that putty knife handle.

Love the rosewood !!!!!
They don't make great looking tools like that anymore. Fantastic job!
What a week, man no joke, January flew by ! Take care SC !
Thanks ScoutCrafter. The anticipation with the razor blades was killing me.
Puddy knife looks great!! Wanted to thank you the other day on the scissor sharpening lesson... with the light on the edge. Holy cow what a difference. I am so glad Nick! The draw strokes really make a difference!
Nice restoration. I've bought and destroyed so many putty knives in my career it's unbelievable.
Nice job. Great hobby. Thanks
With all that's going on in this world you Channel is like a "breath of fresh air". Thanks Art
Fadher! Hahaha! Puddy. =) I use Bar Keepers Friend on high carbon steel blades. Removes most stains. Leaves them with a light gray color. Then, they polish well.
You were not born 50 years too late, ScoutCrafter. 50 years ago, these tools would not have needed you to bring them back from the dead.
I also wish I had been born 50 to 100 years in the past. As great as it is to have access to everything we have today, I really feel that our grandfathers had the best life and were always so calm and accepting of their lot in life.
I think you are right Joe!
What a great video, enthusiasm is infectious, thanks so much! Will check out your other videos for sure.
That's a real good job on the putty knife. The blade turned out over the top wow. I kind of wish you showed how you did the handle, I want to see how you clean the wood around the brass. It turned out great.
Hi Bill! I buffed it on the buffer with compound just like buffing metal! =D
@@ScoutCrafter Thank you :)

Love the design and look of the allway one , good vid as always 👍🏻
Wow that came out real nice Scout. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
Great work John looks awesome 👌
Great transformation
Those knives with the radius on the corners are perfect for scraping under a lawn mower deck.
Great video.
I love all ur videos SanAntonio.Texas
My gosh, I remember as a teenager my dad showed my how to set "points" to hold window glass and how to reputty the windows. Very labor intensive. "it's still stiff" that's what she said!!!
That came out so beautiful , hopefully you change your mind now about metal with wood handles lol , i just love wood and brass
I definitely agree with you! Where did we go wrong and why??...I’m always looking at my tools compared to my wife’s grandfather’s older tools and wondering why this country went the cheap way!!!
Nice one, in printing we called them ink knives 😃
Many of them got glued to the bench top for fun 👍🏻
Good Lookin Puddy Knifey Pop too he used em all the time.
I’ve got quite a few of the lovely old , well I call them scrapers. To me a putty knife has a point and a couple of reverse curves .Scrapers have fan shaped down to parallel shaped blades. Buddy, how about a restoration on that table saw surface. Looks pretty bad. Great project, came out really good. Stay safe my friend. God bless.

Nice work. I’m not from New York but I too pronounce double T like DD used to drive my Mom nuts when I’d say Liddle or buddons
Nice Puddy knife!
Great video some of those old time pudy knives are great looking.
great job as alwaysm i love how the brass matches the wood
I have a plastic handled putty knife that has been cracked with some of the pieces missing and than duct taped together. Guess I'll have to fabricate a new handle for it. Wish me luck! Jim
Hahaha I literally just did 5 of these earlier today they had all kinds of stuff on them they where all Hyde brand haha awesome we must be on the same page
Those Razor Blade Holders like the first one you showed are the absolute worst! The lock never holds and they push in every third scrape.
Haha I was thinking the same thing.
...have a great weekend stay safe and enjoy.. i made some flexible knife blades out of a few old ones..
Nice job. I have to agree, plastic is aweful. People want everything cheap these days so they can throw away when the job is done. I like to have tools that I can be proud of and keep them looking good.

Thank You for sharing!
I have one to do just the same as that one in about the same condition...thanks for the tips!
Two fish are sitting in a tank, one looks to the other and says “Hey man, you know how to drive this thing?” Awesome restoration!
Nice vid scout, putty knives are one of my favorites!
Buddy, you got me with this one I love puddy knives as well, I hope after seeing this vid many more guys will see the beauty of a great putty knife.
before the pandemic i was finding great old putty knives at the flea market. i like the flexible ones but the stiff blades have their purpose. i love wire wheeling the old crud off the blade and seeing made in the USA. i like to research the company so i can get a idea of the age.
The big Zip. LOL strip. I buy the cheap plastic ones for work to clean the edge of DOT city State boxes in the ground works great
