We are looking for help to Caption some of our videos through TH-cam's captioning system. If you'd like to help us out, let us know and we'll send you the community link! Thanks for watching guys and being apart of this community!
I am free for a month starting mid next week and would love to help out. Also that’s wicked cool. Just wish it could be handheld. I would totally benefit from something like that. Anyway I would love to do a Skype collaboration with y’all sometime
Hi Brad, thank you for sharing your exciting journeys and how you navigate your life! My cousin Jeff is my age (37) and is a person with CP also in canada (nb!), but he does not currently have assistive communication technology and it’s always been complicated for him. I found your videos after i had a recent visit with him where we chatted together and wondering if technology could be available and useful. Your videos have me very excited for the future, and to show Jeff what could be possible. I have some questions for you about your experience, as i imagine that gaining a voice has been a bit shocking to the way you are suddenly able to interact. I’ll continue my questions in a separate attached comment
Question 1: my aunt, Jeff’s primary caretaker has some reservations about the amount of work that goes into teaching and training time, 37 years between Jeff and her has included many failed assistive technologies, and she is more hesitant to try another “miracle tech”. I’m curious, was your experience difficult for your caretakers or workers to accept or get used to?
Second question: I remember that my cousin Jeff was given access to a much slower version 10 or 15 years ago of eye typing tech using a head mounted laser, but it was very finicky and painfully slow and tiring for Jeff, especially since it was one letter at a time. and they decided it wasn’t worth the hassle. Was this your first eye-typing technology? You said that it was fairly easy to learn but took time getting used to. Was it tiring to learn to use your eyes in this new way? And is this newer version finicky?
Last question, maybe the toughest question to answer.. Jeff has very limited communication tools, and because of this, his aids (especially his mom) rely on making a lot of assumptions and i notice take the reins when it comes to making decisions, so jeff often takes a backseat in conversations and his care. And i notice that i feel concerned that suddenly having his own voice could drastically change the ways that the power dynamics of his relationships will be forced to change. Especially with his mom who knows him best but also regularly makes the choices assuming his best interests. Was it a drastic change in your personal life to gain the ability to communicate more complex ideas? While jeff has the ability to communicate “yes” or “no” through actions like looking directions and leg kicking, i’m concerned that learning how to say not only yes and no, but also communicate why, will potentially be really straining on his daily relationships, and id like to know how you and your aids and family handled some of these changes! Maybe that would be a good thing to make a video about: how did your family and aid adjust to suddenly having a conversationalist and no longer needing to make guesses to communicate?
Wow, thank you for this. I'm always looking for new access methods for my sister. I KNOW she would love to surf FB or TH-cam on her own one day. She doesn't have as good control over her head so previous eye trackers have been really putzy with needing to calibrate all the time but this one looks like it can sense where you head is already. I so want to try it out with her and I LOVE that you showed your whole setup so I don't have to start from scratch!
The customized mount is amazing, and the computer technology...🤯. So happy that you were able to upgrade! I bet it's been fun playing around with all of the new options. 😃
Oh wow Brad This new communication tool is so neat. Picking a voice probably was more fun for you too. So glad to see your next promo video for marck dimes for canada! Keep the videos coming! I love watching them.
I have proloquo2go on my iPad and I use The same Ryan voice for my switch voice (when it reads out the labels of the buttons) and I have Rod voice for actually talking.
I don't like none of the voices in the Communicator 5 Cuz it doesn't sound normal, and I tried to get the Google Translator voice in the Communicator 5 Cuz I love the Google Translator voice, and it seems like me but, I didn't find the way to do it but, one of my coworkers is trying to figure out the way to do it!
