    I love the way you put on the diffuser. To save space I don't put on the reflector. I set up so the base of the flash tube is just inside the umbrella. This has the side benefit of improving the balance of the umbrella and putting less strain on the light stand mounting point.

    I feel like it would be better without the reflector, so the light inside can go all directions. That specific reflector restricts the light going up and down, unless that was your intention. Also i love the diffusion trick on the umbrella before deploying it! Never thought of that.

    • @shapeshiftstudios6312

      Give it a shot, depends on how far you put the strobe in the umbrella. You risk two things without a dish: burning your diffusion and a massive hotspot from the bare-bulb.

    Hi, thx for the great video and help. I have a problem and therefore a question. I want to use your setup from above. But then the Umbrella creeps all the way down, which is also bad for the light. How can I prevent the umbrella from creeping down? Thx in advance. Maybe also you can add the solution to your video.

    • @shapeshiftstudios6312
      @shapeshiftstudios6312  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don’t have a screw pin to hold the umbrella shaft in place then place a piece of painters tape around the umbrella shaft to prevent it from slipping further into the strobe’s umbrella mount.

    The reflector prevent from strob light to spread in the entire umbrella. You can cheack it yourself by taking a photo of the the umbrella while its flash and see if all area of the umbrella is burn. Sorry for my poor english.

    • @shapeshiftstudios6312
      @shapeshiftstudios6312  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Give it a try! It prevents the flash tube and modeling lamp from burning your diffusion and helps to prevent a major hotspot from the exposed tube.

  • @yrudy
    @yrudy ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Isn't it possible to mount the umbrella without the Reflector? Or is the whole in the strobe not strong enough and needs extra support from the whole on the Reflector? I ask that because the Godox DP400III-V doesn't come with a Reflector

    • @shapeshiftstudios6312
      @shapeshiftstudios6312  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is definitely possible to do. If you’re using diffusion you have to be extra careful that it doesn’t touch your modeling lamp and burn. In addition it provides protection from developing a hotspot where the flash tube is.

    Sorry if this was asked and answered already, but why use the reflector with such a huge light modifier? I get using them with a shoot-through umbrella, but I don't get the usage here.

    • @shapeshiftstudios6312

      You risk two things without a dish: burning your diffusion and a massive hotspot from the bare-bulb.This will give your diffusion sock something to grab. You can get wider reflector dishes if you feel you're not getting enough spread.

    1. Buy 7' parabolic umbrella
    2. Put a reflector on your light source
    3. Now you have 3' parabolic umbrella
    You should not use a reflector with paras. Also try to move the light source deeper.

    • @shapeshiftstudios6312
      @shapeshiftstudios6312  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I highly recommend trying it and shooting images of your umbrella at various distances from the reflector. It doesn’t make it a smaller light source like you’d think. Additionally, you risk burning your diffusion with a direct contact to some strobes and this ensures you aren’t getting a hotspot on the subject from your flash tube. 👍🏼

    • @lekaakela
      @lekaakela 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shapeshiftstudios6312 put a reflector on the flash and take a picture of the surface of the umbrella. then take off the reflector, push the flash deeper and take a second shot of the surface. I promise you will be surprised

    • @shapeshiftstudios6312
      @shapeshiftstudios6312  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! With umbrellas, there isn't. You can always place the umbrella above your subject and just make sure the portion of the umbrella that is over your subject is just the very edge. That will give you the feathered edge you're looking for!

    My Godox S bracket is a joke when it comes to the umbrella mount. My umbrella rod is scratched to heck from the metal rubbing against metal. Are there any recommendations for a better mount for the Godox V1 with parabolic umbrella? I wonder if anyone else has had this problem. Let me know! thanks!!

    • @shapeshiftstudios6312
      @shapeshiftstudios6312  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Most lighting systems we've used have a metal machine screw to secure parabolic umbrellas, you could try sliding a piece of gaffe tape between the screw and umbrella, but most end up dented and scratched. Think of it as a sign of good use and experience!

  • @Strravaganza

    A reflector is completely unnecessary in this setup. It only limits the light output.

      Right and that’s not even a true parabolic umbrella, its not even shaped like a parabola

    • @Strravaganza
