This is a *very* good TAS. And the "worst" part is I reckon it can be optimised further. Obviously, there's the Turbo RNG, but there also *appears* to be a little bit of vertical tilt control that could do with work. I wouldn't be able to say too much about the airbraking, alas, I'm sure there's reasons for most of it, but... Hot damn, to see this is a delight.
very good post tbh, good to know there are so quality wipeout enjoyers here i agree, vertical tilt is SUPER op if you master it, especially on jumps, as you decelerate while airborne and vertical tilting can cut your airtime considerably.
@@noabman4093 I'm assuming they are referring to pitch control. In all of the wipeout games you can pitch the nose of your craft up and down. Super handy for controlling your takeoff angle when going over jumps (pitch up = more height, pitch down = more speed), also important for keeping your craft stable when landing (When landing from a huge jump, nose up is usually preferred so you don't bottom out and slam into the track surface)
I can remember in the time i used to play this competitively, for records on WipeoutZone, that the Qirex’s poor handling made it unviable compared to AG Systems. At least in time trial mode with only one turbo per lap. This feels groundbreaking.
If I download the emulator, rom, and this recording file... Would I be able to delete the part where he presses the change view button so I can watch this from third person instead of first? Or is that not how this works?
wipeout 1 has a weird quirk where your vehicle doesn't have a hitbox if you play in first person, which the runner uses to not collide with the ai drivers, so the tas would desync if played back in third person
@@name_5927 It would probably be possible to create a hack where your vehicle doesn't have a hitbox in the 3rd person, but I bet the game would desync anyway, due to different lag frames, but don't quote me on that.
@@name_5927 Do you now if this applied to walls as well? It's very difficult to judge whether you can cut corners tighter when the perspective is different. It seems seems to me like a lot of moments in this TAS would normally trigger a collision - especially when he's slightly clipping through.
Damn, if WO actually controlled like this during normal gameplay and not like the floaty awful mess it actually is, I'd like it. As it stands though Redout and F Zero blows the pants off this series.
No way, and I started with the F-Zero series! Wipeout 1 controls very different from the rest of the games, the rest are a ton of fun. I wouldn't judge the series from the controls of the first one. Try Wipeout 3 SE or BallisticNG for more polished takes on the classic WO games. BnG is a wicked game in its own right. Oh yeah, casual reminder that Redout 2 comes out tomorrow!
Holy shit I thought the rubberbanding in this game was so bad it was impossible to lap another ship. You did it in fucking silverstream Also, disappointed that Messij wasn't in the song list for this. TAS and all, I get it, but cmon. It's Messij. You can't not play that song
I remember renting this and a system from blockbuster when I was a kid. I absolutely loved this game for the weekend
Ngl... I replayed 0:03 a bunch of times.
That sound really hits different
It definitely does.
and it has countless variations if the bios of the PSX is corrupted :)
A Wipeout TAS?! Sweet! The soundtrack is absolute 🔥.
And as Wipeout's OG ace pilot Kel Solaar too. Bonus!

@@user-gi6hd5ol6f what is vertical tilt? as a humble amateur wipeout enjoyer

This seems like it would be near impossible to TAS yet here we are

Surprised at the Silverstream routing, everything says that left path is optimal, but you made it look easy.
This was released 27 years ago. Please feel free to comment when it's 30 years ago and also after that.
