Im about 2months into the hobby. Spent about $1100 upfront buying everything rofl. Now im starting to get a little more selective what I spend my money on.
Started about 2-3 months ago, purchased 6 PC 151 ETBs at $110, 4 151 UPC at $110, 4 151 etbs at $60, 2 obsidian flames at $100.. 4 Temporal force Booster boxes for $105 and more but those are some of my bigger movers from the short period I’ve been in the hobby. (Up 28% from investments across my whole portfolio) ordered a case of surging sparks and interested to see where it goes at launch but don’t intend on selling products for another few years
If Evolving Skies goes back to $700 a box I'll just continue buying them at $700 because I actually believe in the product. It's one of the sets that I actually think deserves the amount of hype it's getting unlike some of these other sets. I have picked up a few at $800 as well because I still think they're undervalued there. I am still buying other boxes, and there is a point where I will stop to sit on the ES boxes but I just like the chase cards in it. Awesome video still Alex, I really enjoy your perspectives on things and level headed approach to this I think people overcomplicate the hobby so much.

STOP BUYING 151 SO THE PRICE WILL GO DOWN AND I CAN BUY IT!!! Edit: I think even if 151 gets a full reprint it'll still spike in price right after all the stock gets bought out. Its just too good of a set.

Hell I might even overpay for Shrouded Fables at this point because my Walmarts are dry, empty, completely bare bones. The only thing there the last time I checked was those like 40 random card scam mystery packs lol.
Great video. I agree. I think the best pick ups right now are Paradox Rift, SV Base, and Surging Sparks. I do think PSA 9 1st ed of popular cards are also great plays. Like you said, the 10s are seeing some rises, and this could trickle to the 9s that are also scarce. One example is the Shining Gyarados 1st edition PSA 9. It was a 1300 dollar card buy it now last year. Now low list is 2800 on Ebay, and one just sold on AUCTION for 1900. The one I'm looking at is the Shining Magikarp. Only around 4 on the market, all at around 800 obo. Great buy imo.
I agree. That shining gyarados is timeless! Also, ya with the new popularity with the Paldea Magikarp I think that could help the shining magikarp too.
I was in the hobby as a kid(still have all my old cards thankfully). But just not getting back into it with my kiddo we just love the cards they have beautiful art nowadays especially.

I have been back in the hobby for less than a year, I have built up a good collection but you have to buy smartly. You can find good deals on modern if you shop around and hunt. The "restocks" have helped me get some of the harder modern sets but I had to hunt and look everyday. Pre-ordering stellar crown and surging sparks has helped me get some good stock early. Unfortunately I was just late for Til Mask but I did get a few boxes before it got over 120 a box. All the other "older" modern sets, I have just been picking up 1 or 2 of each just to to have but I can jump back into a hobby and spend 700 in an evolving skies box. Lol
Most of the time I would say $110 or more is too high at pre release but with Surging Sparks... i don't know. It's possible that is still a good price. Too early to tell..
I just started ordering Obsidian Flames sealed at $35. Promo card is already moving at $11-$15 at the moment. Waiting on 20 elite trainer boxes to arrive.
Good advice, I've been back collecting since Aug 2024. I'm right at the FOMO stage where I wished I had more of everything, I wish I restarted sooner stage. It's hard seeing everything go up without you. But, I'm sure my time will come.

Started hobby during Temp Force here! Not much inventory and growth, but I’m confident I bought at bottom. And they are desired product. I will trust the process
I was updating my Sealed product excel sheet while listening to this. Here are the sets that would lose me money, with fees and shipping, if I sold today. This mainly tells me that the product hasn't gone up too much and if I wanted to buy more, it wouldn't be too dumb a play. It's all Scarlet and Violet sets(minus 2 of them). Base set, Paldea Evolved, Obsidian Flame, Paradox Rift, Paldean Fates PC ETB, Temporal Forces, Shrouded Fable PC ETB. Stellar crown and Surging Sparks are still at presale prices. I think both those sets are pretty cool. PC ETB = pokemon center ETB. As for Sword and Shield...I started collecting with Lost Origin (@$238 right now). The only thing there that is close to a loss is the Charizard UPC, but I bought it at $119.99, saw it at $89 at one point. It's around $158 now and all the people who bought at $89 are likely very happy it finally hit the green.
Well yeah S&V is still a modern set in production so all those sets have a chance of being reprinted and shops still having a bunch of stock, definitely buy Twilight Masquerade it's the best set so far of S&V besides 151.
I hear what your saying I do however remember what evolving skies did when it first doubled in price ppl said don't buy just wait then it jumped to 300, 350, 400 very quickly. I'd say if you want to buy 151 product it's now or never I only see pricing going to up and up and up. It ain't ever going to come back down. Imagine if the charizard hits 1000 for a psa10 you really think the upc will get cheaper ain't no way. Buy it now or forget it is my option but do wjat you want. I would say 151 is the new evolving skies I can easily see the charizard doing the exact same thing the moonbreon did/is doing so in my opinion 151 is going to be exactly like evolving skies down the road a few years from now
Something about the Ogerpons in twilight masquerade make it a fun chase set. Sure there’s the greninja but there’s just something about the ogerpons that make me think that this is going to be the only set moving forward that has all the 4 variants. Maybe it’s just me.
I've been into the hobby for about 2 months, and I have watched almost all your videos and I'd say your definitely a mentor in the space (at least for me). I'm happy with the product I've bought and I will be holding for few years. Only thing that I'm not happy with is how this business can be, and I've only been in about 2 months. A week and a half ago I bought 2 paldea evolved booster boxes for $200 (before tax). A complete steal if ask me. But 3 days after I bought it, I get an email saying that my order is cancelled, but I NEVER cancelled it. I go check the website again and they list the paldea evolved booster boxes for $150 (before tax) a box. That had me PISSED. I got my refund, but its the principle. F the money. They even say on their website that they CAN'T cancel orders, but oh well. I just hope the hobby isn't like this going forward. Regardless, I'm happy with my sealed product and what I have so far. Can't wait for my surging sparks to get in.

I think the only thing I regret missing out on is the 151 PC ETB. I don’t see those ever getting a reprint or coming down in price. But the price tag on a case is a pretty solid amount of money and it would be hard to commit to spending all that on one case that I don’t plan on doing anything for at least 10 years. I have three evolving skies booster boxes and considered selling one to get a case. Still undecided as yet though.
Honestly though I can see 151 rising in price regularly for years to come. The fact that 151 has the original pokemon AND you can get god packs with full evolution line means this set will be in high demand for several years to come and think of the rip and shippers on Tik Tok and TH-cam. They will be doing breaks of this set all the time. Product will dry up heavily and prices will soar until most people can't afford it anymore. I don't think the set is over-hyped at all. I think 151 is a great buy still as long as you intend to hold for 2-3 years minimum at this point.
Ive got a small sealed collection, im looking to build up, but the S&V Sets i have opened have been incredible, and somehow turned a few hundred into a few thousand by actually opening packs, which is mind blowing because S&H im only loosing money opening packs, and wont open anymore, besides crown zenith.
Im still going on the M pokemon if I can find good deals. Especially after the leaks. I do think surging will do extremely well goad I got in with a couple cases. Next is the hope alts will make a run soon.
Sealed 151 booster bundle case just sold on eBay for $500. You could’ve bought multiple of them just the other day when GameStop had there drop for just under $300.
I got 4x costco 151 ETB bundles with 2 Paldea Koraidon tins for $70. Gonna keep em sealded and don't really care if it gets a reprint. Ride the lows if anything get some more 151 when it dips.

Sold my evolving skies before the boom! 😢 but still profited quite a bit. I think that’s the thing to learn though. You’re never gonna time the top or the bottom!
I’ve made quite a good bit of money for retirement through selling stocks when it would hit 15-20% return. Immediately sell it. Even if it reaches 50% later, I already have that money moving. Take profits and move forward, it’s actually worth it.
Best advice I've ever heard is "time in the market always beats timing the market". Play the long game. And the long game is not 2-3 years, it's 7, 8, 9 years plus in Pokémon. That combined with diversification is key. You never know what's gonna do well, some things blow up, some things don't. That's why diversification is so important. Not just in Pokémon, but investment in general.
I want to buy sealed product and hold onto it, as well as open packs and collect cards. I enjoy collecting, I've been a collector, and I would like to eventually build into a side business if not make it my full time gig. Now I know if I buy a box of Stellar Crown, I'm not gonna sell it for $25k in six months. I know I'm not gonna do that in 6 years. But I understand what kind of value it can gain, and I know from collecting all kinds of items how value can go up and down according to releases. I want to ask, I have seen channels saying don't buy sealed. Open everything. It came off kinda doomer, as if everyone and their grandma has 14 boxes of sealed Stellar Crown in their closet. Should I ignore these people and buy anyway? I've been in and out of Pokemon since it released, I have NEVER seen this stuff go down. But the youtubers make me feel negative about it. What do you think is the best way to invest?
I have been doing this for 9 years now and have had doom and groomers telling me those things every step of the way. They have been wrong every single year so odds are they will be wrong again next year and the year after that. I continue to buy and hold every set and continue to do very well doing so. That's all I can say..
@@HauntakuTV So I'm not totally new to this, just trying to feel out the Pokemon area. I used to buy bricks of Heroclix (discounted from specific places), open them, and sell the SRs and Chases. There are definitely differences but I have never had better luck with single boosters than I have getting boxes/ bricks.

Relatively new to the hobby and feeling good about my purchases so far. Just a couple modern investments. No flipping until I feel like I have a grasp on the market, which may be never. 😂 In that case, I will just invest more.

If you bought at the high, which is today, you could only break even selling private as you'd sell at a loss selling through a 3rd party, but if you just bought it, why would you look to sell today?

I think I came back into collecting last year. Now like 3-4k in. I sell some of my 151 etbs and singles atm. Lets see. Im pretty chilled. Mostly buying cheap japanese atm.
I think more and more sports card guys are moving into Pokémon from sports cards. I spoke to some vendors at my local card show last week and that was the case for them. I am one that has done that over the last 1.5 years. Even at these prices, Pokémon is a fraction of sports card prices prices for sealed wax, and sealed wax appreciates for Pokémon , and Charizard is not tearing an ACL or MewTwo getting arrested...LOL.
I would kinda have to disagree with alot of what he is saying. U can almost throw a rock and hit anything thats pokeomon and make money. Always buy the most popular items though. Those are the most liquid. Just try to find a good entry point. Dont buy the weaker sets ever.
Still pretty short sighted view I'd say.This is like 5 year term advice. When you're a decade plus investor there's A LOT of opportunities right now. SWSH/SV/Sun&Moon are all still good. Have you seen old sets like Holon Phantoms, Leaf Green/Fire Red, Storm Front? I know most people don't have 10+ years in mind, and if that's you, then listen to his advice.
Good comment. People are so short sighted in this hobby. Most recent example "I wish I had bought ES for $120! Wait, it's up to $350? I wish I had bought at $200. It's at $500 now? No more opportunity there. It's up to $700? God, why didn't I buy it when it was still cheap?" And this cycle is going to continue forever. Most people selling when they 2x, 3x their money for no reason whatsoever. It's insane
To be clear I'm not buying any 151 over msrp. Having said that... The PC ETB is the least likely product for folks to get on a restock. Could it be restocked? Sure probably, but even if we see one, will most people be able to catch the 5-10 minute drop? Probably not unfortunately.

151 is king , reprint will come and watch it drop a tad then boom straight up again due to it being the most complete set it S & V

It's all Scarlet and Violet sets(minus 2 of them). Base set, Paldea Evolved, Obsidian Flame, Paradox Rift, Paldean Fates PC ETB, Temporal Forces, Shrouded Fable PC ETB.
Stellar crown and Surging Sparks are still at presale prices. I think both those sets are pretty cool. PC ETB = pokemon center ETB.
As for Sword and Shield...I started collecting with Lost Origin (@$238 right now). The only thing there that is close to a loss is the Charizard UPC, but I bought it at $119.99, saw it at $89 at one point. It's around $158 now and all the people who bought at $89 are likely very happy it finally hit the green.
Well yeah S&V is still a modern set in production so all those sets have a chance of being reprinted and shops still having a bunch of stock, definitely buy Twilight Masquerade it's the best set so far of S&V besides 151.

I hear what your saying I do however remember what evolving skies did when it first doubled in price ppl said don't buy just wait then it jumped to 300, 350, 400 very quickly. I'd say if you want to buy 151 product it's now or never I only see pricing going to up and up and up. It ain't ever going to come back down. Imagine if the charizard hits 1000 for a psa10 you really think the upc will get cheaper ain't no way. Buy it now or forget it is my option but do wjat you want. I would say 151 is the new evolving skies I can easily see the charizard doing the exact same thing the moonbreon did/is doing so in my opinion 151 is going to be exactly like evolving skies down the road a few years from now

Something about the Ogerpons in twilight masquerade make it a fun chase set. Sure there’s the greninja but there’s just something about the ogerpons that make me think that this is going to be the only set moving forward that has all the 4 variants. Maybe it’s just me.
I've been into the hobby for about 2 months, and I have watched almost all your videos and I'd say your definitely a mentor in the space (at least for me). I'm happy with the product I've bought and I will be holding for few years. Only thing that I'm not happy with is how this business can be, and I've only been in about 2 months. A week and a half ago I bought 2 paldea evolved booster boxes for $200 (before tax). A complete steal if ask me. But 3 days after I bought it, I get an email saying that my order is cancelled, but I NEVER cancelled it. I go check the website again and they list the paldea evolved booster boxes for $150 (before tax) a box. That had me PISSED. I got my refund, but its the principle. F the money. They even say on their website that they CAN'T cancel orders, but oh well. I just hope the hobby isn't like this going forward. Regardless, I'm happy with my sealed product and what I have so far. Can't wait for my surging sparks to get in.

I think the only thing I regret missing out on is the 151 PC ETB. I don’t see those ever getting a reprint or coming down in price. But the price tag on a case is a pretty solid amount of money and it would be hard to commit to spending all that on one case that I don’t plan on doing anything for at least 10 years. I have three evolving skies booster boxes and considered selling one to get a case. Still undecided as yet though.
Honestly though I can see 151 rising in price regularly for years to come. The fact that 151 has the original pokemon AND you can get god packs with full evolution line means this set will be in high demand for several years to come and think of the rip and shippers on Tik Tok and TH-cam. They will be doing breaks of this set all the time. Product will dry up heavily and prices will soar until most people can't afford it anymore. I don't think the set is over-hyped at all. I think 151 is a great buy still as long as you intend to hold for 2-3 years minimum at this point.
Ive got a small sealed collection, im looking to build up, but the S&V Sets i have opened have been incredible, and somehow turned a few hundred into a few thousand by actually opening packs, which is mind blowing because S&H im only loosing money opening packs, and wont open anymore, besides crown zenith.
Im still going on the M pokemon if I can find good deals. Especially after the leaks. I do think surging will do extremely well goad I got in with a couple cases.
Next is the hope alts will make a run soon.

Sealed 151 booster bundle case just sold on eBay for $500. You could’ve bought multiple of them just the other day when GameStop had there drop for just under $300.
I got 4x costco 151 ETB bundles with 2 Paldea Koraidon tins for $70. Gonna keep em sealded and don't really care if it gets a reprint. Ride the lows if anything get some more 151 when it dips.
I bought back in the pandemic. Bought a bit of everything. ETB's a junk. They do not reprint booster boxes like they do etbs. Booster boxes are the way to go. I'm looking to buy again. To hold for another 3-5years. What booster boxes do I buy from the current sv sets? What is the best set so far from sv?

I’ve made quite a good bit of money for retirement through selling stocks when it would hit 15-20% return. Immediately sell it. Even if it reaches 50% later, I already have that money moving. Take profits and move forward, it’s actually worth it.
Best advice I've ever heard is "time in the market always beats timing the market". Play the long game. And the long game is not 2-3 years, it's 7, 8, 9 years plus in Pokémon.
That combined with diversification is key. You never know what's gonna do well, some things blow up, some things don't. That's why diversification is so important.
Not just in Pokémon, but investment in general.
I want to buy sealed product and hold onto it, as well as open packs and collect cards. I enjoy collecting, I've been a collector, and I would like to eventually build into a side business if not make it my full time gig.
Now I know if I buy a box of Stellar Crown, I'm not gonna sell it for $25k in six months. I know I'm not gonna do that in 6 years. But I understand what kind of value it can gain, and I know from collecting all kinds of items how value can go up and down according to releases.
I want to ask, I have seen channels saying don't buy sealed. Open everything. It came off kinda doomer, as if everyone and their grandma has 14 boxes of sealed Stellar Crown in their closet. Should I ignore these people and buy anyway? I've been in and out of Pokemon since it released, I have NEVER seen this stuff go down. But the youtubers make me feel negative about it. What do you think is the best way to invest?
I have been doing this for 9 years now and have had doom and groomers telling me those things every step of the way. They have been wrong every single year so odds are they will be wrong again next year and the year after that.
I continue to buy and hold every set and continue to do very well doing so. That's all I can say..
@@HauntakuTV So I'm not totally new to this, just trying to feel out the Pokemon area. I used to buy bricks of Heroclix (discounted from specific places), open them, and sell the SRs and Chases. There are definitely differences but I have never had better luck with single boosters than I have getting boxes/ bricks.

If you bought at the high, which is today, you could only break even selling private as you'd sell at a loss selling through a 3rd party, but if you just bought it, why would you look to sell today?

I think more and more sports card guys are moving into Pokémon from sports cards. I spoke to some vendors at my local card show last week and that was the case for them. I am one that has done that over the last 1.5 years. Even at these prices, Pokémon is a fraction of sports card prices prices for sealed wax, and sealed wax appreciates for Pokémon , and Charizard is not tearing an ACL or MewTwo getting arrested...LOL.

I would kinda have to disagree with alot of what he is saying. U can almost throw a rock and hit anything thats pokeomon and make money. Always buy the most popular items though. Those are the most liquid. Just try to find a good entry point. Dont buy the weaker sets ever.
Still pretty short sighted view I'd say.This is like 5 year term advice. When you're a decade plus investor there's A LOT of opportunities right now. SWSH/SV/Sun&Moon are all still good. Have you seen old sets like Holon Phantoms, Leaf Green/Fire Red, Storm Front? I know most people don't have 10+ years in mind, and if that's you, then listen to his advice.

The PC ETB is the least likely product for folks to get on a restock. Could it be restocked? Sure probably, but even if we see one, will most people be able to catch the 5-10 minute drop? Probably not unfortunately.
