Let's be thankful for the miracle of video that allows us to see the best doing their best at one time, as we experience the sadness knowing that we will never see such talent again. What a difference compared to what passes for music today.
Yup! And I always assumed the smile was because when John strained to reach the note and/or passion on the words "everybody else is too loud" it kind came out kind of whiny or crying. And, of course, it's ironic since The Ox's bass is probably louder than the three other musicians combined!
Yeah - the Stones - "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band" - not even CLOSE. The 'orrible 'OO blew the Stones off the stage on their WORST night - EVERY night.
The Who in full flight! That’s the f n best! I wish I would’ve thought of it...and you’re so right: there never will be another band like The Who in full flight again! I can’t stop saying it right now! For sure I’ll never forget it; and it’s a safe bet I’ll nick it from time to time. But just to say it to my family and friends. They won’t believe I came up with it anyway; I’m not that clever. Plus why wouldn’t I have been saying it for decades already? Ahhh, busted before I started. I’ve changed my mind; I’ll never attempt to own that beautiful remark! But seriously, it’s Gold, Jerry! Gold!
John wrote a song called "It's Your Turn" from "It's Hard" that could possibly be the band's most underrated song. It's a disgrace that the song was never played live.
My favorite Entwistle tune (along with, oddly enough, "You"). Watching Kenney Jones in this video reminds me of how outstanding a drummer he was. Was he Keith Moon? Nobody ever pretended that. But he was absolutely great, live or in the studio.
They were just different drummers. The Who with Keith was great because there were just 4 monsters of music on stage, The Who with Kenny were great because like John and Pete said: Kenny gave them more room and thus we get better performances from John and Pete.
You're absolutely correct. While a lot of people thought Kenny probably wasn't THE right drummer for The Who,I doubt Keith could've done what Kenny did on this one.
I just discovered these lyrics after hearing this song for 35 years. Blown away. PS - NOBODY rocked harder in 1981. Not AC/DC, and not Metallica when they hit the scene a few years later.
October 9, 1982 CNE Stadium I remember before the show an airplane flying over the stadium pulling an advertisement stating: "Happy Birthday John Entwhistle..."
link biff all those stories of him and Keith smashing up hotel rooms. John did all that stuff too, I love hearing him and his band mates explain how sneaky and crazy he could be.
3:06 It cannot be stated enough. When Pete windmills, he's literally ripping his fingernails off. Everyone else who windmills on stage doesn't come close to touching the strings. It's a stage gimmick. For Pete, striking the strings with such blunt force was a part of his unique playing style that broadened the band's sound. The windmilling he does during "Young Man Blues" on the "Isle of Wight" DVD is unreal.
It's Your Turn is the best studio song that JE ever wrote. It was the best song that any of them wrote on Face Dances and It's Hard. I don't get why Dangerous was chosen as the song they would play live.
It's because of the line" I aint Quiet, everybody else is too loud" Everybody in the band was constantly trying to outdo each other volume wise. He was laughing, look at Entwhistle laugh back right after. That line is one of the greatest lines describing the band ever.
man, the night and day difference between Pete here and on the Dallas performance the same year... he didnt seem to enjoy himself at all there, but here he's on fire
Entwistle @ 1:58 just turned it up a few notches and went to a dark place! PT said to himself whoa, wtf -what was that? PT impressed, looks over to him, and in his smile says it all: ur kidding me right?,that was awesome, what r u thinkin, haha? a sincere smile amongst brothers, and Entwistle caught himself they share the laugh. I loved the way PT coaxes the smile out of JE... brilliant
furself1 that's not at all what happened lol that line in the song is a jab at his fellow bandmembers for being so outspoken and so loud on the stage. Townshend is joking looking at him like "Too loud, eh?"
DrDizzleFrizzle read my comment again, and see the video-again!. i. who are you to tell me what I see or don't see, ya feel me doc. ii. they're brothers/best of friends as PT has said in numerous docs, ya feel me doc. iii. furself1 I can't tell if you're a troll or incredibly stupid and overly defensive. The song was written a year before this concert and as I said, the lyrics are a PLAYFUL jab at the other members of the band. It was a joke that Townshend and Entwhistle were laughing at, nothing dark or anything like that. Now please try to use PROPER English if you plan to respond, k~?

I never knew Pete and (The Who as a whole) were this tight in the 80s, my favorite period for them still has to be the 60s! They’re still one of my favorite, and in my opinion, one of the best live acts of all time! Long live The Who!
Freekin' love this! Townshend is truly on fire here. I used to have this on VHS (Who Rocks America) and I'd watch this particular performance as a teenager 10 times a day! Long Live the Who!!
A bunch of us went to see The Who in Buffalo on the same tour (opening show of the tour, I think, with The Clash as the warm-up band!!)... We had hash brownies but started to chicken out as we neared the border. Everyone ate one and we had three left, so one of the girls with us, not wanting to waste any, ate them. By the second number she was on the tarpaulin and missed the whole show. She was very cute, and we had to encircle her to keep her safe, and even then, the vultures were circling.
@Matt Levy exactly' Pete's was the master of the visual art and nobody matched his stage presence let alone his guitar power chords just rocking stadiums from coast to coast! 🎸 The WHO

John entwistle seemed to be one of the few bassists that understood that the bass can be used as something more than just a backing instrument. He did quite a few good solos on his bass.
Saw them live a few months before at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto & had a Who party the night of this televised event. The Who has always been one of my favorite bands to this date. Thanks for sharing some fantastic memories.
This is the best song of that show. Pete is engaged, Kenny is playing something that suits him and the Ox is on fire!!! Once John left The Who, they ceased existed being the Who in my opinion.
The heart of a songsmith and conceptual artist prowess you might like both Alexander Pushkin and Russian poet ethereal and evocative Aleksander Blok The Artist poem. Cheers Sir Peter, Sir Rodger Sir Kenny.
Nicely said. He is one of the more exciting players to watch. Keith Moon as well. I can sit down to a Who record and just focus on the drumming and be thrilled. Jeff Beck is also a very exciting player to listen to, not so much to watch.
+Chris Robey How was he underrated? He was voted the greatest rock bassist EVER by Guitar Player Magazine i think. He is widely regarding as the best. Funny, I never thought about that line in the context of the band itself. I thought it was just about other people talking too much, not him talking too little - which of course is also what he meant. Thanks for that one.
I first began liking Pete Townshend, & the Who a long time ago. There was a program explaining that Pete Townshend was def, etc. I was too young to relate only that he was unable to hear. I, for some reason thought that there was another Brittish or English born rock star with more or less the same problem. I think I was thinking of a member of the Kinks, etc. Also, it seemed to be possible to keep track of him, Maybe because of the # of the members of the band. I think during the interview, he was out-going, etc. which seemed wierd because the band was already world famous. Also, I assumed he couldn't hear anything at all. This was was or seemed , if not impossible, verry hard to comprehend, because of my young age, + what I knew or didn't know about the term deaf. During the brief interview, he was outgoing, etc. so it was asa if somthing was cancelling somthing (out). At the time I also thought he must be the only one. I didn't even know any of the Who's material. So the band didn't serface in my world for another times' woth (of Time).
...and then john glanced back and then they looked at each other longer - there was some shared joke there... but for the life of me I can't hear anything that may have brought it on... I was at that show, as it happens... two nights in a row and I went to both - i think it was the other night that I was on acid.
i was at the pink floyd toronto xibition stadium sept. '87 shows on acid. i had a sheet of white blodder,I wrote phone #s on it n put it in my wallet. the customs agent looked right at it ,n let us right across the border! good ol' days.

Yep, Pete uses chord voicings that Joe Perry has never heard of. Playing an exciting solo is about a lot more than how quickly you wiggle your fingers. It's like saying that the guy who can pound the hardest and fastest is the world's best fuck.

Not even The Who
Great tune. John was an underrated songwriter. Pete gives everything for John's song.
He always does, even on songs he doesn't really like playing such as Sister Disco and Dreaming from the Waist.
@@13geoffman Had enough off who are you is my favorite Entwistle tune

its hard is incredible@@MattSmith-iq1ld
It is nice to see Daltrey singing behind Entwistle (during the chorus) so he doesn't take the spotlight away from him. That shows class, IMO.
The anthem of introverts everywhere. Rock on, John!

I don't think there's anything odd that "You" would be a favorite Ox tune; but then, mine is "Trick of the Light".
Captain Bud Sturguess I’d love to hear Bozzio’s take on The Who catalogue.
One of my absolute favorite Who songs. It’s hard as hell and the bass is brutal. 👊🏻
I just discovered these lyrics after hearing this song for 35 years. Blown away.
PS - NOBODY rocked harder in 1981. Not AC/DC, and not Metallica when they hit the scene a few years later.
Iron Maiden w/Paul Di’Anno?
No-one rocked heavier. Heavy rock you see, heavy.
Pete in the ZONE. Stunning!! Power and VOLUME!!!!
The Best Rock and Roll Band on the planet.
Best song the Post Moon Who ever did... This is a brutal song and great performance.
John's "It's Your Turn" and "You" (listen to the bass) are killer as well.
2:05.....Pete has this "Where the fuck did that come from?" look on his face....and in a good way.
A ton of mutual respect they had for each other..
Brothers in Arms for life and then some...
Woohoo! I always loved Entwistle's rock voice. One of my favorite of his songs, and a great version. Thanks for posting!
The Ox! The Bruce Lee/Jimi Hendrix of the Bass!
+J Damiano why bruce lee
+pandurate No... I'm saying he's awesome like Lee. Both are the greatest at what they did.
The ox, the john entwistle of bass.
John says " still waters run deep so be careful I don't drown you." This song was a Punch to gut on the "82" tour. THE WHO.
I saw them in Worcester Mass, just before or after this show. These guys were so good it was ridiculous. Best live band ever.
It would have been hard to see them "just after" this show since this was the last night of their last tour for 7 years. ;)
I was there too, this was definitely one of the highlights. Pete always goes a little nuts playing John's songs.
Happy Birthday in Heaven, my dear John. I have faith we will meet again someday. We're not quiet; everybody else is too loud!
gotta give some props to kenney here, definitely a challenging drum part, especially to play without rushing
October 9, 1982 CNE Stadium I remember before the show an airplane flying over the stadium pulling an advertisement stating: "Happy Birthday John Entwhistle..."
Despite John being the most calm, he could sometimes be as vicious as his bandmates.
link biff all those stories of him and Keith smashing up hotel rooms. John did all that stuff too, I love hearing him and his band mates explain how sneaky and crazy he could be.
Pete needed Johns help on Cousin Kevin from Tommy because John had an extremely dark side

BY FAR John was the loudest one onstage, and it's never talked about. Nobody wants to go near his bass rig...
I used to watch this on a vcr recording and daydream about being Townshend. Even now I get goosebumps watching this performance.

Everybody calls me the quiet one
You can try but you can't get near me
I ain't never had the gift of gab

When words fail me you won't nail me
My eyes can tell you lies
Still waters run deep so be careful I don't drown you
You've got nothing to hear I've got nothing to say
Sticks and stones may break your bones
But names can never down you
It only takes two words to blow you away
Everybody calls me the quiet one
But you just don't understand
You can't listen you won't hear me
With your head stuck in the sand
I ain't never had time for words that don't rhyme
My head is in a cloud
I ain't quiet - everybody else is too loud
Still waters run deep so be careful I don't drown you

But names can never down you
