Although it’s a fun lil nod to their relationship in the novel it was based on, Emma by Jane Austen from 1815. Emma’s (aka Cher) sister was married to Mr Knightley’s (aka Josh) brother. They took the word family-in-law much more seriously back then, so Emma would have considered Mr Knightley’s brother as her brother, and Mr Knightley would have considered Emma’s sister as his sister. That makes their relationship the sort of sibling-adjacent-but-not-really that ex step siblings does a good job of conveying in a more modern context. To say that Josh was just a family friend wouldn’t quite have cut it.
My take on the step sibling thing: it’s not nearly as weird as people make it out to be. Her dad and his mum were married for less than a year, several years ago, so Cher and Josh would have seen each other as friends much more than siblings. And anyone who thinks it’s “creepy” or “grooming” for an 18/19-year-old to date a 16/17-year-old needs a reality check. There’s a reason most countries have Romeo and Juliet laws-it would be unreasonable to say that someone who just turned 18 couldn’t date someone a couple of years younger than them. If you want to react to a period romcom, they recently did an adaption of the novel that this was based on, Emma by Jane Austen. Emma from 2020 is great, and since it’s based on the same source material, there are a lots of fun parallels :)
I think people don't really understand what grooming is. What if they were dating at 17 and one had a birthday? They'd have to break up for a year? Lol
i LOVE this movie!! cher is iconic and i don’t think of her as a mean girl, i think she’s just very innocent but definitely not bad! and josh and cher aren’t related at all, his mother dated her father for like a couple years so there’s nothing weird imo
I remember watching a video about how this movie was made and it’s shocking the lack of faith that was shown through this movie. Amy Heckerling did a great job adapting ‘Emma’.
10:17 Cher doesn’t always follow logic and doesn’t think through. There’s a reason I relate to this character. I was unsuccessful at matchmaking too lol
As Gen Z, this movie still holds. Just a few tweaks with technology and some plot points, it would still be cool. Also, can we talk about the fashion which is still relevant. Also, this movie predicted we’d be addicted to our phones 😂
This movie didn’t predict we would be addicted to our phones, we were addicted to our phones in 1995 lol. My senior year I got my first cell phone and we were all addicted, my parents had car phones before then but being able to take our phone with us everywhere was amazing, we no longer needed our pagers. I graduated high school in 1995.
@@ilanakarp That is absolutely false. Unless you went to a school where everyone was super rich and thus ahead of the curve with technology, the vast majority of people didn't have cell phones until the early-2000's.
I had a pager in the 90`s, it was more affordable than a cell phone. Mostly people with more money and good credit had cell phones in that era. I was a teenager then and didn't get my first cell phone till I was an adult in early 2000`s. They became more available, affordable, and common during that time.
If you like Tai, I suggest watching “Uptown Girls”, which stars the same actress & Dakota Fanning. It’s free on TH-cam Movies. Also anything directed by Garry Marshall is A+. My favs are “The Princess Diaries” & “Runaway Bride” (10 yr reunion of “Pretty Woman” cast)
This is my favorite comfort movie. I saw it on TV as a kid sometime around 2000 or 2001. Loved it ever since. 💕 RIP Brittany Murphy Travis trying to jump out the window still kills me everytime. 😂
18:19 Years after both Cher and Josh were born, his mum married her dad, then they got divorced and Josh comes over to visit sometimes. No blood relation and no official legal relation either.
Also; Mark Wahlberg: about 51 years old now Tom Holland: born in the summer of 1998 Paul Rudd: about 53 years old now Paul Rudd is literally older than Mark Wahlberg... 😂
Brown Nose: to get on someone’s good side, to make them like you. Aka an ass-kisser. Space Cadet: someone who isn’t knowledgeable, intelligent, or lacks common sense. She didn't say her birth was a routine liposuction. She said her mum died when she was a baby, a fluke accident during a routine liposuction....so after she was born.

Love this movie and this reaction so much. Forrest Gump is definitely a must see. You really go through all the emotions in that movie and another Rom Com I think you'll have fun reacting to is Pretty Woman all these are my comfort Rom Coms
I am glad I found out about this movie when I started high school. Anyway, Paul Rudd doesn’t even age. He’s 53 and he still looks like he’s 30. There are some movies I think you’ll enjoy in which you gotta do before you moss out: Big momma’s house Good burger Kingsman the secret service
Since they were only step siblings for a few months I don’t think its weird. They’re much more like family friends then siblings or step siblings. The part that weirds me out is the age gap. She’s 16 and he’s in college. And i don’t think he’s a freshman so he’s at least 19 probably.
If you love overdramatic stuff, you'll definitely love movie musicals. My all-time favorites are The Greatest Showman, Les Miserables, and Moulin Rouge. Burlesque with Christina Aguilera is great too!
I think people are starting to understand why Cher and Josh ARE NOT SIBLINGS OR STEP SIBLINGS, they are not related at all and he is just there cause of Cher father, also he just started college lol i was still soo highschool when I started college 😂
The whole "is this incest?" thing is up for debate I guess, personally I find the entire romance plot to be uncomfortable, but regardless of the familiarity aspect, Josh is also 18-19 in this. He counts as one of the college aged boys they talk about. Cher is only 16, and I think a lot of people overlook the fact that Josh is an *adult* in this because it's Paul Rudd. Cher having a one sided crush would be one thing, but the second he didn't shut it down, it became a problem. The ball was in his count and he didn't do his due diligence as the adult in that situation to put a line down n seperate himself from the environment and *not* kiss the *underage* girl.
But then again you would say the same with a 17 year old and a 18 year old. They only have 2 years of separation wich isn’t much. So i personally don’t think it’s that big of a deal.
I've never seen like two years of separation as a big deal at all. Like they are both teenagers, regardless. Maybe it's weirder now, but in the 90s and early 2000s it was very common, even expected for girls to try the date up a bit, by a year or two. Ergo Cher's whole "ew high school boys" thing. Most states have laws that make it not a legal issue if they're close in age.
it isn't really incest since they aren't blood related, they have only been step siblings for a very short time like around 6 months only I think? and they didn't grow up together and they don't live together either. it is weird but it shouldn't really be considered incest unless they are either blood related or they grew up together and considered each other as siblings. I agree tho the actual "problem" is the age difference so I agree on that part. it doesn't matter if she took the first step or if she liked him first, cause he is older and should have known better
I was a teen when this movie came out. Loved it then, love it now. They were step-siblings for a brief time, the implication was less than a year but because he was already heading to college to be a lawyer, keeping touch would help his career and the dad/step-dad saw he was a good kid and wanted to help. So they met as older kids, lived together for some months, and then the parents split so they never really formed a familial bond. Definitely not incest literally (they are not related) nor figuratively/in the spirit (they were not raised together as siblings). Nah 😂 As Cher said, their parents were barely married

Cher Horowitz in today’s age would make some amazing video essays. We were robbed of an Internet Icon.
This film made actress Alicia Silverstone a sensation... until Batman and Robin in 1997.
Cher’s Preppy Yellow Outfit is iconic. 👏🏽

The reason Cher went feral at the Bouquet catching was because she wanted to win a rewarding bet.
So, we can clearly say that Rival Reacts is the progeny of Travis and Tai. All the ingredients are there.
Alicia Silverstone didn't know how to pronounce Haitians correctly, and they thought it was so funny that nobody corrected her!
