- Here I show how to make a simple weeding tool for your garden. Especially good for removing dandelions in your lawn!

My mother had a brilliant way to control dandelions. She would pay us a few cents per weed that we dug up and put into a bag. The only thing is that it had to include the root. That was a great way for us to earn spending money as well as for her to get us out of her hair.

@@josephdorey8458 What was incredible was that neighborhood kids would see what we were doing and ask if they could make money digging weeds too, Of course mom said they could. We would think we were clever by blowing the seeds knowing that they would grow more money, I mean more weeds. She probably didn't care as she knew we were out of her hair for quite a while plus she could know what we were doing and where we were.
She was a smart woman indeed.
My Grandma would do that with me too. It was fun sometimes.

Dandelions are one of the healthiest plants to use in teas. It has so many benefits!
If you keep your grass closer to 4" it does two things. Your grass is healthier and requires less water, the blade is tall enough to shade the roots that grow on the surface. As a byproduct to the grass growing so healthy the weeds really can't compete and over time the grass will win out. I understand why people like short grass, I prefer the thick and luscious look and no weeds to worry about. That is a pretty cool tool though, I always enjoy your videos.

I've gone the long route myself and have noticed a huge difference!
Besides the fact that I like to watch your work, I also like your yard and the surrounding areas. Lots of greenery, quiet, no noise of cars and loud screams of neighbors.

So, I've changed my lawn into a colourful, wild blooming meadows. And since then I do not need tools like this anymore. 😊
That specific type of weeding fork is the best design for digging up dandelions for sure! I have had a commercially made version for 20 years. It's made from stainless steel with a wooden handle, and you just don't see such good quality tools in the shops these days, so it's great to see you making one of the same type which will no doubt last a lifetime!
There's nothing more satisfying than pulling weeds!

That is a great tool. You get roots and all. That's why my dad said, "you have to get the roots if you don't want them to come back." Nice, sharp tool!!! 👌 Awesome!!!

Superb tool, at home the Dandelions I pick them young in spring and I eat them, Washed and cut roots, Vinaigrette with Mustard, Salt, Pepper, Vinegar (1 spoon) without Oil n Fat bacon bits melted in hot oil which is poured on the salad and stirred quickly, the Dandelions are thus slightly "Cooked" and are eaten immediately lukewarm, delicious.

We do the exact same thing where I’m from originally. We call it Bettseicher, I assume you call it pissenlit? Same idea. 😂

Chemical application makes it even easier. That said, I enjoy the time spent playing in the grass and feeling the warmth of the sun on my back.

If you ever want to abandon the sterile, grass filled lawn, Dutch Clover, Corsican Mint, Prunella (Self-Heal), Creeping thyme, and English Daisies are all wonderful plants. (Good for bees, need little to no mowing, and some culinary uses too.) The Dandelion is truly a remarkable plant. Edible from root to blossom, and hardy as can be. (The greens can be marinated in apple cider vinegar, if they taste bitter. The blossoms can be used in a syrup, wine or jam, and the root can be roasted and used as a tea/coffee substitute.)

@@sparkywilson1405 I reckon it's all down to conditioned aesthetics. People prize their immaculate, putting green lawns, even though they use hellacious amounts of water, provide no real benefit for ourselves or wildlife, and (from my purely subjective point of view) are utterly boring. Folks have been conditioned by years of advertising, peer pressure, and lack of awareness. (We used to say here in Northeast Ohio, that the first thing that appears in the Spring is dandelions. The second thing that appears is a little old Italian lady with a colander and scissors.)

I dead-head the weeds = that stops them from seeding themselves and the flowers benefit the bees and they are as pretty as the other flowers

Actually, a year ago I made similar, but my weeding fork was no way as good as yours. I'm a novice blacksmith of only 2 years, but already I have learnt such a lot by watching your videos. Now, since I'm well again I'm going to follow your demo and make a far better one. Many thanks! *Hugs* Wendi

Making your own tools is very satisfying thing. Just yesterday i made a small utility knife out of an old broken folding knife blade (sorry to say i broke it in my hands while trying to straighten the small bend in the blade). Learning by doing - great way, just need to accept you will make mistakes :D
And today we live in wonderful times. Many skilled people is showing their trade online. Just pick and learn :)
Anything you grow, build or forge, is better than anything store bought
@@pinetree9343 It's not always true. I can show you my hook knife photos. I broke the blade a couple days after i made it;) But it does give MUCH better satisfaction when you eat/ drink your own produced food (just today i set up a 25l cherry wine from cherries i picked in my garden), when you work with tools you made or when you share/give things you made to people you like (i love carving wooden spoons and giving them to friends and family).

As a kid it was one of my favourite tools. I could help my grandparents at the farm. Busy all day on the lawn getting dandelions out
If I removed all the weeds from my yard.... I'd just have dirt.
Nice removal tool, i recall those in every shed from the 70s but with the advent of chemical salts and lazy people, none of those have been seen since.
my mom used to have us kids dig up young dandelions, she would then cook them as greens. my grandma used to make wine from the yellow flowers nothing went to waste lol
exactly what i do, i thought I was the only person in the world doing it.......amazing the huge pile you get over a small area
My favorite part of blacksmithing is being able to see a need, and immediately make a tool for the job! This is a perfect example of that. And in 1000 years when people are digging up Torbjorn's yard they'll find this strange thing and wonder what it was used for!

I cut and sharpened a 30mm pipe and put a cross-piece handle on it.
I went weeding with a 1.8kg hammer and the pipe...
It worked beautifully.
However, this was such a simple job, beautifully envisaged and carried out...a pleasure to watch, as always.

I've gotten 71 and just mounted a knife on a hoe handle with pin and epoxy much as mounting a knife handle with the tip of the knife wedge and sharp much as your tool But before seeing your video so mine is my idea.

I think it's a split shot of the before, without the bottle there. So he held the bottle for a second to get a shot of the left half of the anvil without it, then put it down, then did the snap. So before the bottle drops, he can't put his body over the left side where it's going to be.

Nicely made. I have a similar store bought tool that has a flat piece of metal bent into a curve and attached to the tool a few inches above the fork. It makes a rocker/fulcrum that helps to more easily lever the dandelion root out of the ground. Thanks for posting.

Born and raised farmer. Preemergent herbicide is your friend. Get it down just as the grass starts to come out of dormancy. May have to follow up with some postemergent spray the first year to deal with any hot spots. The second year the preemergent will be your only application particularly if you provide your lawn with some calcium.

@@torbjornahman I understand, and everybody can try their own methods. They all come around to herbicide at some point. Dandelions (taraxacum officinale) originated in Europe... they are global now. Each head averaging around 75 seeds.

Like the idea of this but at my age want one that I can stand up and use with a squeeze trigger closing claw to put the weeds in a bucket. ;-P Your lawn and gardens are a real treat for the eyes and refreshing for the soul. As a kid my folks were the janitors at church which also meant watering and mowing the lawn. I spent many an hour digging out Dandelions, I used to want to scream at adults who thought it was cute when there little one blew on one of the flowers and spread seeds all over!

If you want another video idea research a thing called "Grampa's Weeder" and I'll bet you could make an amazing custom version of one of those with the handle and riveted pivot. Invite your friends over for a BBQ with beers and put one of those out in your yard with a bucket. The bucket will magically fill with dandelions!

My parents doesn't really want to spend money on removing weeds from their lawns, and i don't live at their place anymore. I do want to buy a house with a really big lawn, because i'm a garden tractor enthusiast, but for now, as i'm only a 23 year old Swedish lad, i stick to my ground level apartment and has to watch the local apartment company that takes care of the apartments deal with the weed
