Ultimate Space Saver For Small Workspaces - P1 - Mechanism

  • I have been working on a design for a compact workspace with multifunctional storage and organization. I am hoping the design can be adapted to suit a wide range of applications. A compact arts and crafts storage and work unit or a puzzle and toy storage and play unit is just two of the adaptions I would like to explore.
In the first part of my Ultimate Space Saving Work Table And Storage Unit, I get rolling on a storage unit that can convert to a table/workbench.
I wanted the conversion process to be effortless so I had to get a bit creative with the mechanism.

the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

Very nice. Only one thing I would change. Because it comes down right against the wall, you cannot have anything behind it on the wall, forcing the wall to be empty at all times. I would suggest pulling the unit away from the wall (with some sort of stopper when it is pulled down, of course) so that you can have space to store additional items on the wall.

Very clever. How about spring bolts as a locking mechanism - those could engage in either the up or down position and are automatic. You could use a garage door type handle to unlatch them. In fact, a set sold for garage doors might be the cheapest solution for you. If you feel like being fancy, you can buy electronic locks that will only engage when in the correct position.
Please keep providing these very high quality videos.

To be able to make the table stable don't use a sable ... but in the back corners is probably a good way to put some simple stopping blocks locking mechanism made of wood. Place them so they stop the back edge of the table top moving up. It doesn't look like pushing down on the front edge of the table would have much leverage to have a chance against such stopping blocks?

Good video but if you are gonna talk over clips in the final edit then turn down the audio of power tools in the clips or have no other audio in them because we can't hear you. With a little more trimming this could easily be 20 minutes or less if you cut out the repetitive and uneventful parts! Not a hate comment though I cant wait for part 2.

Imagine complaining about someone giving you free content. He obviously made an oversight with the audio as i'm sure he spends quite a bit of time building and editing his content. Nope, could not finish this episode, and I will not be subscribing no mater how interesting this project looks. Here is why: First, don't just slam into machine noise mid-word. IT HURTS. Give us a brief bit of quiet between them so the brain can switch out of high focus mode - like a second would be enough. Secondly, you jump between steps WAY to fast. You just start cutting, slapping things together, we see no layout or measuring. I mean, you just started randomly drilling holes in your wall. I assume you did not do that, but that is how it looks. Same for your wood alignment when gluing and nailing.
Seriously, slow down, take a breath. You are doing interesting things, not only can you slow down, we would all definitely appreciate it.
Oh, and when you get a chance, consider a better mic. Yours is very tinny. Again, painful to listen to, but not as bad as just suddenly jumping to the saw mid-word.
Best of luck in the future.

I found myself jumping ahead very quickly because I really didn't know what you were building and wasn't sure I wanted to invest the time in watching the whole video. My suggestion is to take about 30 secs at the beginning to demonstrate how your ideas work so your audience is hooked on the idea before showing how it's built. But this idea is great, just like all your videos. You get the absolute most from the space you have.

Don't know if someone already mentioned it, but you don't want to put two bearings in contact with each other. It causes the bearings to wear and fail faster. It seems like you could get a pretty heavy load on it, so the bearing raceways will likely rub together until one eats through the other or the bearing seal and locks the bearings up. Its simple enough to fix this issue... just put a couple washers between the bearings or buy a double roller bearing of similar dimensions and you could prevent premature failure.

it sounds as if you are talking about mounting the storage into what becomes the table.
I think the storage units should be mounted to the wall (which may require relocating the top/back crossbar on the table to clear them) at which point it becomes a good question of if you need the tabletop to be doors at all, or just open the table to get at the storage (making the doors be solidly supported without eating a lot of space is a non-trivial task)
a simple swivel block at the top center or top corners that wedges under the storage would be a very simple and solid latch to keep it from moving when open.

Good work, on your question of locking the table in place, have you though about placing a Barrel bolt lock in the middle under the support beam, its small and should support the down pressure and for ease of pushing it forward and back you could weld a peace if rod to the barrel where you can use it from the front it should theoretically work and have a small foot print.
Just an idea! Otherwise really good work!!

I really liked this video, and all the ideas i saw in your small workshop through it.
Please work on your transitions, though, especially when switching straight to a table saw shot - it's loud as hell, and murder on any headphone users. Tone it down, or at least fade into it, since it's such a loud, sharp noise. Also consider investing in a lavalier mic, it will make a huge difference.

OK, still P1, but a few comments.
The bench stores in the middle, so any storage there needs the bench open for access (or complex 'doors' in the work surface). Any storage below is difficult to access with the bench down. If the bench stored below and lifted up, the centre is free for storage at all times. No complex arms, just hinged struts.
Even if you want to store it in the middle, lots easier to just hinge it at the back so it folds forward and down. Gravity legs. Or even better, you could hinge the surface on the side wall. Full height storage, and you cannot use that sidewall in that area anyway, as it would foul the bench movement. The bench could hinge in the middle as well, reducing folded away space requirements. Support bracket out of the RHS of the unit.

I've been a subscriber for a while, and I'm always impressed with your skills! That said, some of your projects seem a bit overengineered... (but maybe that's just my innate laziness speaking.) About that engineering: creating something like this folding table/cabinet clearly requires very precise plans to work from. Could you do a video about your design process? I imagine lots of your subscribers would be keen to see the pre-fabrication stages of your woodshop projects.

Wow, there are so many innovative design solutions in your shop already. Love the flip up cross cut saw and the wall mounted sander. Very interesting to watch you work and some great ideas there. You deserve a lot more subscribers. Looking forward to Part 2.
