- Alan Arkin made his film debut as a Soviet submarine commander who runs aground off the coast of a rustic New England island that thinks it's being invaded. The large ensemble cast recalls It's a Mad Mad etc. World (also written by William Rose), but the story is more nuanced and satirical under the direction of Norman Jewison, operating here in Preston Sturges mode. An obvious influence on Spielberg's 1941.

I have always believed that Brian Keith and Alan Arkin should have received awards for their performances in this movie. Brilliant!

Brian Keith was fluent in Russian in real life but was not given any Russian lines in the film.
When Brian Keith’s character quietly admitted he was scared, to me he was the most realistic actor in the whole movie.

This movie has aged *extremely* well. With the exception of a bit of slapstick (which I guess may still work for fans of slapstick), every joke in the movie still lands. I particularly love the middle of the film, in which half the people on the island are freaking our about a Russian invasion, while another half chastise them for paranoia, saying nothing at all is happening, and both sides are wrong. Ultimately, virtually everybody's an idiot and virtually everybody's decent, and this is the genius of the film. And Alan Arkin of course, what a treasure.
Agreed, agreed, and agreed! This is a deeply optimistic and humanist film without being sentimental - as well as being RIDICULOUSLY funny and clever. Why Jewison, with such an outstanding and varied roster, is not considered one of The Greats I will never know.
All of it still works (even the slapstick hasn't aged a bit for me), this might be the greatest military comedy of all time.
Alan Arkin had quite a run in the mid 1960’s. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Wait Until Dark, and this film. A truly great actor.

Filmed in and around my home town of Fort Bragg Ca. One scene was filmed across the street from my house and all the actors were hanging around our fence my sister got everyone of there autographs. They were the nicest people also a fun fact they built the submarine down in our harbor it was made of styrofoam and ran on a couple outboard motors if I remember correctly.
Hello, I am a Andrea Dromm fan. I am planning to visit your area as part of what my daughter has turned into a Ventura Highway, Jellystone, Lake Tahoe whatever marathon. I was wondering if you know the location of Andrea's bicycle scene, where she encountered those galoot's in the station wagon? I am planning a "then and now" video. Using shots from the film, fading into a current shot of the same exact location. I know it's a long shot. Thanks!
@lutherheggs that scene was shot at what the locals call the haul road or ten-mile tuck road. It was originally railroad tracks that they hauled logs out of the woods with, then they ripped up the tracks and made it a truck road. The state owns it now, there are three ways to access it. The one you would want is the Ward Ave access at Cleone. Drive to the end and it's a popular walking spot, the truck road is still there but covered up by sand in spots just start walking north from the parking lot Andrea's scene looks like it was probably shot within a mile or so maybe more, the trees in the background are Cleone park and you can see the point of land that goes out towards the ocean is now a popular raised wooden walkway now. Also I believe the summer vacation home that the main actors were staying at when the Russians first encountered them was around that area but I'm pretty sure it was built by the movie company. If you had a still photo of the bicycle scene even though the trees are probably bigger and everything has changed I think you could come real close to lining up the shots.
@@skymaster9484 Wow! You have some really helpful information! Armed with this, I think I can make it happen. I read somewhere the Whittaker house was burned down to cut removal costs. I noticed the house appeared to have wood siding which would make it easy to burn down. Thanks again!
@lutherheggs Another easy scene to find would be the ending where the sub and townspeople have the confrontation just go down the Northside to the Noyo River right when you make the sharp right is where it was filmed the building is now called the Noyo store I think and right next to it is the old ice house where the kid fell off the roof looks different today but with pictures would line up. Also on that same road if you keep following it is where they filmed all the sub scenes it deadends at the original jetty that's in different parts of the movie goodluck. Another fun drive is to drive North of Fort Bragg about 10 miles or so to the small town of Westport the little store with the gas pump is where the Russians confronted the old couple and hung the woman on the coat hook still looks the same believe it or not.
@@skymaster9484 I didn't really expect anyone likely to see this would have any useful information, but here I am with a embarrassment to riches! Maybe I can even probe local sources and obtain suitable photographs and avoid the trip altogether. I'm not really up for a month long road trip. My idea was to drop in there, get it done, then head back to Dallas. But the thing is, that may not be as easy as it sounds. The nature of the landscape, the wide area over which the movie was filmed would make the task of locating precise spots myself would likely descend into a farce. Now, I am thinking I can enlist current local sources, including engaging a local photographer to go out and get the shots. I always considered this movie as a follow on to It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World. It was zany, had an all star cast (some from Mad, Mad World), included various vehicles, it included a group that was searching for a prize (for a way back to sea), it started out slowly and ended in hilarious pandemonium, it highlighted the frailties of human nature, and it is a movie that I shall always enjoy with much laughter.
Not only was this movie in that movie written by the same guy as of the same cast members are in both movies
Alan Arkin will be missed.
This terrific film should have won Best Picture of 1966 because it's better than A Man For All Seasons!!!!!

The biggest thing that sticks in my memory is that my twelve year old self watching this movie started to understand that the Russians bad/Americans good routine was garbage and how wrong it was to plant that bs in the minds of kids. Going to have to stream in this week.
I'm a kid of the cold war and grew up with Reiner, Arkin and Brooks (yeah I know, not in this film or associated but still) as family practically. Love this movie. Wonder if younger audiences think this is at all funny. I mean, it's H'wood defusing violence and enemy lines and showing we're all just buds when the chips are down. How wonderfully and enjoyably innocent is that?
Michael J. Pollard, who has a small role in this film, has just died, and I remember just how wonderful "The Russians Are Coming" is. An outstanding ensemble cast, and a reminder of just how disturbing this time in history was.
What a face he had! And the legendary old Ben Blue on horseback - I'm so glad they gave him some late life screen time in a decent film.;

If there was anybody born to play Alfred E. Neuman of MAD Magazine, it was Pollard, that face, that look of ridicule.

Fans of this movie are going to want to get the disk version for the extras and Norm Jewison's comments. - we saw it when it came out, and my brother and I used to love to chant "Emergency! Everyone to get from street!"
i forced my eight and four year old children to learn this scene then mimic it with me when we're at busy street fairs. we even do the satisfactory nods to each other (my kids idea). it's a good way to 'darwinize' the crowd or at least make people weirded out enough that they give us the fast lane anyway. we've even made friends who know the reference. gotta check the disc for the commentary thanks!

May be repeating myself but Jewison is the most unheralded and underrated director of all time, even with his accolades. He has such range and amazing story telling.

It is UNMISTAKABLE THAT RUSSIAN IS SPOKEN IN THE MOVIE BY THE CREW MEMBERS! Arkin apparently emigrated as a Russian Jew to America as a boy so was still fluent for authenticity. The Submarine Captain was Austrian who knew some Russian and with coaching was convincing. Other crew members who DID NOT NEED TO SPEAK ENGLISH were authentic Russians who had emigrated. The film was eventually shown in Russian and translated so they could understand. They were moved to tears and enjoyed it immensely which helped to thaw cold war relations at a time when the US was becoming involved with Southeast Asia and subsequently China.

i agree with landis about jewison's usual, unfortunate absence in the short lists of major and influential directors. He has such amazing range for a director. Thomas Crown Affair, In the Heat of the Night, Moonstruck, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Hurricane, And Justice For All, and this one. He also gave Ashby his start. Hollywood promotion eclipses even its own awards.
I would watch the hell out of Jewison getting a Lifetime Achievement award.

Combination of Dr. Strangelove meets it's a mad mad mad mad world. Alan Arkin steals the picture and continues to make great films. Norman Jewison's funniest movie which follows The Thrill Of It All and Moonstruck.
My father owned a black 1960 Ford Galaxie sedan, just like the one that Carl Reiner steals in this movie.
58 years later, and this is STILL one of my favorite movies. Nobody ever mentions the wonderful Russian choral music that runs through it, though. Nor were the singers credited. I'd have loved to have a record or tape of the soundtrack when I was growing up.
Duck and cover in the event of a Nuclear attack actually made more sense than you think. It wasn't meant to protect you if you were within the blast zone,i.e your a goner, it's intention was for areas far enough away to survive the initial blast but within the area affected by the shockwave. Hiding under a table would protect you for any debris, flying glass, ensure your not looking at the initial explosion.
In a way, it was actually quite sensible advice, as there is not much you could do anyway if you where too close, and if your not then you might as well not get injured by debris.
I saw this movie when it first came out when i was in oak bluffs on martha's vineyard. couldn't of a better place to see it. remains one of my all time favorites to this day

You are right. This is a terrific movie. While it makes some very serious points (and ones that transcend it's political times), it does so while you're laughing you head off, so you don't realize that you're learned something.

I never knew this was Alan Arkin's first film...that's cool. BTW, I'd like to note that it's not an "atomic bomb loaded submarine", it's supposed to be a 20-30 year old captured German WWII submarine, an old "forth-rate" submarine, not very high up the list. Oh, and Alan Arkin was just the first officer, who gets assigned the dirty job of going ashore; teh subs captain is the fat guy who runs her aground to start with.
But the reason they crept so close was that the Captain wanted to see America, which adds such a lovely human scale to it. The movie is a marvel.
At least that is accurate. Always loathed how James Kirk would go down to the surface of a planet when a real captain would send a subordinate and stay on the bridge. Perhaps Star Trek would be better if it was shown from the "everyman's" point of view, eating chow in the mess hall, carousing on alien worlds, raising general hell and getting into bar fights, etc.
that 'fat guy' is the great Theodore Bikel (he was an amazing Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof).

Uhm... You DO realize that the whole point of this series is for the famous film guys to talk about films that influenced them and hopefully get you lazy shits to go check them out.
It seems to me that Norman Jewison really HAS received plenty of respect and accolades over his career. The Irving Thalberg award by itself would attest to that. I will agree that his work in cinema is outstanding in that he's one of those directors who took on controversial topics like racism and, as you mentioned, an objective view of the Soviets during the cold war.
This particular film hangs in my memory dating back from when I was eleven years old and saw it in the drive-in with my parents. My view of the "Russians" was more sympathetic after I saw this. Again, remember I was only eleven and very impressionable :-).

There is at least one other copy of this great and actually historic film's trailer on TH-cam, but this would be much better color and sound - quality - except for Landis ruining it. He promises to let us see the whole thing without his interference but then reneges.

Love this movie. Why does Landis always feel the need to take a shot at his political enemies, though? It adds nothing to the commentary. Also, "Matinee" (another favorite) doesn't show the characters watching a "Duck and Cover" movie, it shows them going through a D&C exercise at school.
Listen, I'm a pretty hardcore conservative/libertarian and I support the Tea Party. But I love John Landis and I'm okay with jokes or swipes at my politics behest as long as it's not vile, mean, or low. In fact, I'll probably joke about it to him if he ever does that to me by doing the "You made me miss" from An American Werewolf in London.
Because leftists always have to take a shot. Just look at Rob Reiner, Carl's son. He cannot keep his fat meathead face shut. Also, why does he say that he is Tyrone Power. He looks nothing like Tyrone Power, especially with his crooked smile, glasses and salt/pepper beard.

I saw this film when it came out. Yes, it was inventive, but there are boring, long parts.

This movie aged well with Russia being our friend now and all.........(minus that invasion of Crimea, Georgia, election hacking, numerous bomber flyovers.......).... maybe this movie didn't age that well.
While this film has aged well in terms of being great entertainment, sadly it's satirical political message has not. That is to say, the very people that thought Russian fears were previously wildly exaggerated, now come out to protest Russian interference in the 2016 election. Putin invaded Georgia and Crimea, and has made many cold war threats with multiple Russian bomber flybys. Obama went from saying the cold war has been over for decades, to throwing Russian diplomats out of the US just as he was leaving office. I would love for someday for Russia and America to set aside differences. Sadly that day is not today.
