Anuva Roy, I guess you are not a Bengali. We Bengali's donot use panch Foran in mug daal instead we use Jeera(cumin) as a foran. However you can use whatever you want.Panch foran is used only in skinned off moosoor daal. you can use turmeric powder but there is a different flavor which you can enjoy when you don't use turmeric powder.
