I was amazed when I went to the botanical gardens in Denver - which is in zone 5 - and they had an entire area of cacti - I couldn't believe it! And now, I learned something else that floored me - there are 4 cactus species that are native to Canada??? Wow! This cactus garden is incredible - great tour, John & Jason!
I live in northern Kentucky in USA we get true 4 seasons. good amount of rain and snow in the cold winters. I have opuntias planted in my garden in mounded pea gravel and full sun. They thrive. The pads are bigger than dinner plates and they've grown so fast that I think I'll have to cut them back or they'll be shaking people's hands as they approach my front door lol.
Living in California, cacti are a great choice for our weather. I do have one desert plant in particular (Sotol) that has a lot of weeds as it is too dangerous to try and clean up around. Like working on a lumber saw while it is switched on. However, just ordered one of those fishhook pullers! Great tip, thanks.
Thank you for doing this tour! I ordered some pads from Naramata Cactus Co. recently and it is so neat to see where they will be coming from! What a property, and John has so much expertise! So much fun to visit with someone with that kind of passion. :)
Happy you enjoyed it! I worked with John for years, and although he was always a wealth of knowledge, I never saw him have so much fun with plants as I did on this visit. Retirement has its advantages, even if he's working as hard as ever!
This is a pretty garden and I like the terracing and the thought put into it. Other then the barrel cactus it’s drought tolerant , fire resistant, aesthetically, beautiful.
I’m so JEALOUS! Love those ! Now I feel confident growing some outdoors here in zone 7 . I’m in Tennessee, USA and it’s more humid here . But I can set them up in drier and more protected areas from rains in Rocky soil and they’ll live ! Yay ! Thanks so much 😊
Excellent garden 😎 We're in England and only have an Opuntia humifusa outside all year round. It's been in the snow a few winters and it's slow growing but still alive 🙂🙂🌵🌵
Hi Jason I had a prickly pair cactus had yellow flowers. Died back in the winter then in spring came back. Easy plant to grow. Had very tiny red spikes if you touch it.

They would be much happier outside, I've got multiple gathered Cactus plantings going and they live without any supplemental watering or protection from the cold outside in Minnetonka zone four Minnesota I have videos on my channel from last year, might get out and do one today

The hi tech, sophisticated, and complicated method of propagation had me quite concerned, but after many rewinds and careful studying, I think I am ready to give it a try.😂 I actually have Prickly Pear and shrub cactus that grew quite enormous on the coffee farm where I was before. In fact, the Prickly Pear stalks were between 6 & 8 inches in diameter. I will be transferring as much of those plants as I can in the next month or so. They will grow very well up here as long as the drainage is substantial. Most of the moisture is in mist and light rain form, but when it does decide to actually rain, it can be several inches in just a few minutes. In November, just after I officially moved up here, it rained over 12 inches in about 56 minutes. Just a little sprinkle.😂😂😂😂 Fortunately, everything is sloped naturally, so most of the work is erosion control and moisture retention where it is needed, like gutters and ditches for water collection and holes in the lava for run-off relief. Cacti are certainly a unique family of plants and a very affective hedge for unwanted traffic.😁🤙
When visiting IN AZ and help my brother in his cactus garden, I found that the sticky side of duct tape is a better tool then tweezers for removing glochids from my hands. The fish hook remover tool is a good tip. I’ll be getting one for the next time I’m in AZ
Had not seen a fish hook remover before and have suffered bloody hands from trying to unhook a northern pike, good tip, I would add a long-handled hemostat to your list
??? at end. Loved the yellow swallowtail enjoying the flowers. It's a lovely display of cacti. I'm a new subscriber after watching the ant episodes. My ??? about Borax for ants are: Is the Eggo just thawed out? Maybe it's a piece off a toasted one? I have a ton of ants eating canned and dried food I give feral cats. They appear within seconds of putting the food down now and I have cracks in the concrete but I never see if that's where they are going down. I'm going to put out a cool whip container for them. I was going to put some dry food in it but the cats will probably try to get to it so I have some frozen Eggo Pancakes on hand I'll try first. Hoping it works. I'm glad you don't go on and on with so many words just to make long videos like some channels. Straight and to the point is how I like it. I can understand these tours being longer-more like a mini show for us to enjoy. Informative and lots of eye candy.

I would love to hear more about that golden barrel's setup. Mainly, if in any way it allows for the roots to grow out of the pot and into dirt in any way or if its more of a form factor/ease of planting to have it double container like that
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm totally fair. I know some lophophora growers practice root trimming heavily but that's a very different cacti than the barrels or other cacti I'd consider using it for

Lol, I live in Canada and have a 6' lemon tree I drag in and out of the house every year, as well as a huge prickly pear (the fruit kind) and many houseplants that spend the summer outdoors. We are crazy in Canada, especially for plants😂!

No, the roots can't grow out of the pot, or it would defeat the feature of being able to remove and store the cactus indoors over the cold season.
