    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
If you’ve enjoyed these lessons or videos you are invited to help support ASL University. A donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for the ASL University website: Lifeprint.com. There's an easy way you can help out your humble (as well as kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher. Just click on the Paypal (donation) link below and you can be an "above and beyond" ASL Hero!

    Thanks!
    - Dr. Bill

I used to have that problem but I finally realized that at the bottom of the video is a settings icon and if you click on that it will offer different speeds to play the video. I put it on 1/2 speed and then sometimes I will keep pausing the video after each letter he is signing. That has really helped me a lot, hope it helps you too.

I couldn't agree more on the last statement
Bill's very charismatic and constantly makes sure students remember all the signs before asking them to form a sentence. It's amazing how much patience it takes to do that every single lesson, truly a teacher "from God".

I love these videos, thank you so much for posting them. Lessons where I live got cut from government funding and I can't afford to drive 40 mins away and hire a babysitter AND cover the cost of lessons and books. My five year old daughter is deaf and I REALLY appreciate this so again, thank you!

Bill you are the man with the plan. I decided to learn ASL because you provide exceptional online resources, much better compared to mandarin for example. I've pretty much mastered lessons 1-7 and I feel so confident with my ability to communicate in ASL. THANKS BILL!

I took 2 years of ASL in highschool, but I forgot a LOT as I haven't used it much since. I'm using these videos to relearn what I've forgotten and to learn more on my own time. I'm happy with how I'm doing. You're a great teacher. I hope to be able to communicate with Deaf people at work soon. Florida School for the Deaf and Blind is here, so we have a large Deaf community and I've really wanted to pick up ASL again. Thank you for sharing your classes publicly for free so it's available to everyone with an interest in this beautiful language.

I had a patient in my clinical rotation that needed an x ray who was deaf. I needed to ask important medical history questions but I could not communicate with him since I did not know how to sign. I went home and began to research ASL classes and found Dr. Vicars on line.
Now I can do more than finger spell thanks to you Dr. V. ASL Rocks!!!!!!!!

Dr. Vicars, I absolutely love your videos! I am rewatching them over Christmas break so that I can regain some of what I learned when I watched your videos as a high schooler.
When you signed "apple", is that not also the same sign as "cool"? I have seen "cool" signed with the knuckle twisted at the check. I would appreciate your thoughts.
Please keep this up! I have recommended your videos to my friends who want to learn ASL and they are loving them! Keep up your sense of humor too, please. I love it! It makes me laugh. :)

Some people just do a little "erasing" movement (by waving their hand side to side in the air) -- but that is silly if you overdo it. Usually you just shake your head a bit and re-start. It is obvious that you are correcting yourself.

Hi Bill, I have a question about the sign for "don't". I know there are some signs where the use of the sign "don't" isn't necessary like "don't like" or "don't want", so when is it most appropriate to use the sign? Can "don't go" be signed simply as "go" with a negative head shake? Thanks for all the help!

hey bill:) so over the past 6 months or so, I've been learning sign language. and came across a video explaining the three types of sign language: ASL, PSE, and SEE
i concluded overall that it would be easier for me to learn PSE, because it's arranged in the same order as the English language.
now I have one concern: will a deaf person be able to understand PSE or SEE? if not, should I just focus on the syntax of ASL?
    thank you!!

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Most adult native Deaf (American) signers prefer ASL.
You will still be understood if you sign PSE.
Many people misunderstand the "syntax" of ASL and think that they have to topicalize "every" sentence. That is not true. For more information see:
      www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/grammar.htm

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Sammie R ASL tends to use a "topic > comment" sentence structure. Or a "time > topic > comment" structure. You can use your "subject" as your topic or you can use your "object" as your topic. If you use your object as the topic you tend to raise your eyebrows while signing the object and then you make a statement or ask a question pertaining to the object/topic. Google: topicalization linguistics lifeprint

I love your work and what you contribute Bill...now here's my wtf...why is finger spelling seem to be a contest on how fast one can do it...is it that tedious to finger spell on a daily basis? or does one become so adept to it, the speed is not noticed?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Indeed: We become so adept at fingerspelling that the speed isn't an issue. Oh sure, if you are spelling a password or some other very-important to get it right sort of information it is good to slow down and be extra clear -- but for everyday casual communication it is common to fingerspell at five letters per second.
You are probably reading these words at well over five letters per second yet you think nothing of it. I could amusingly turn the table on you and ask you what the heck -- are you participating in a speed reading contest?!?
      Heh.
Yet if you were to ask an English as a Second Language reader with only a limited amount of reading experience to read these same words they might plod along very haltingly and be amazed at the speed at which YOU are reading these words.

Hi Bill I have a question (or more...) about the grammar structure when you sign "How many cups of water do you drink daily?" So, in this video lesson, you sign WATER YOU DRINK EVERYDAY, CUP HOW MANY YOU?. I then wondered, "ok... I thought time goes first (per Time-Topic-Comment 'rule')"... So then I looked more at your website at this particular statement. I read this: "There are some people that will insist you should do the sign 'EVERYDAY' as the first sign in this sentence.
Honestly, I don't think "time/tense" is instrumental to this sentence (conjugation of verbs and such)." So then I thought "well, then that means you really only need to sign time first, IF the time is important to the statement, right?" But THEN I'm thinking that time really IS important to this statement because it's about DAILY water intake. So now, having seen 3 different signs and would have signed a 4th way (but I'm a hearing person and an ASL beginner), I am not just officially lost. I have read through your website and accept that people sign in different ways and styles, but wondering where the line is crossed over to "improper" signing, if that makes any sense... Anyway, thanks for your time reading this, and I hope to have a lightbulb moment. -Cheyenne

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You state that time really is important to that sentence.
Sure, just like the words “you” and “water” are important to the sentence.
However, the time concept here isn’t being used to establish past or future tense and thus none of the verbs in the sentence are in need of (the ASL style of) conjugation via pre-identification of tense via using a time concept prior to the verb.
So while the time sign EVERYDAY is important to the sentence it is not important for the purpose of establishing future or past tense.
      However if the sentence was:
How many cups of water did you drink yesterday?
That would indeed work well as:
YESTERDAY WATER? YOU DRINK HOW-MANY CUP?
In that sentence the “HOW-MANY CUP” functions as a clause and the brows are lowered the whole time. “YESTERDAY WATER?” functions as a clause and the brows are raised on “WATER.”
Or you can make “HOW-MANY CUP WATER” into one big WH-question clause:
YESTERDAY YOU DRINK HOW-MANY CUP WATER?
If you do that though you might end up sticking a “YOU” at the end with lowered brows on the YOU:”
YESTERDAY YOU DRINK HOW-MANY CUP WATER YOU-(lowered_brows)?
Yeh so the WH-QUESTION clause can get longer and longer until finally it feels better to add a YOU-(lowered_brows at the end.
I’m glad you put the word “rule” in quotes because it is not as if there is only one grammar structure in ASL (despite the impression many well-meaning “ASL 1” teachers or textbook authors will try to give you).
Let’s consider English for a moment. In English you could say:
How many cups of water do you drink daily?
Everyday you drink how many cups of water?
Cups of water? You drink how many on a daily basis?
Each day you drink how many cups of water?
What is the number of cups of water you drink per day?
On a daily basis the number of cups of water you drink is what?
Water? Everyday you drink how many cups?
Cups of water? You drink how many a day?
Day after day you drink water right? How many cups?
And while I’m not an expert on English pronunciation I believe you might even say: owmenee cupa wahder jewdrinkaday?
      AmIrite?
      I love your question:
QUESTION: ”I’m wondering where the line is crossed over to ‘improper’ signing?”
      ANSWER:
The answer is very, very complex and we can only scratch the surface here in a “comment.”
What is proper in one environment is improper in another.
Homework assignment: Look up “linguistic registers”
The context may be different. If you’ve been discussing drinking habits and hydration for an hour with your pal Bob and then Jim walks in - what is proper phraseology for Bob (high context) is not proper phraseology for Jim (low context).
As far as where do you draw the line on improper signing the answer is: When you confuse your conversation partner and/or waste their time.
      For example:
Bad grammar: DRINK YOU HOW-MANY YOU WATER EVERYDAY CUP
Heh. That would be confusing --so obviously there are ways to sign badly.
      We could however shorten this:
WATER YOU DRINK EVERYDAY, CUP HOW-MANY YOU?
      … to this:
WATER YOU DRINK EVERYDAY, CUP HOW-MANY?
If if is obvious that I’m talking to you I don’t need to sign YOU:
WATER DRINK EVERYDAY, CUP HOW MANY?
If I’m not overly concerned about the cup count I can drop that too:
      WATER DRINK EVERYDAY, how-MUCH?
If I figure you are smart enough to know that I’m not talking about taking a bath in it (since we are discussing hydration not hygiene I could shorten it to:
      WATER EVERYDAY HOW-MUCH?
I suppose I could assume you will tell me your frequency (not tense) if I just ask you:
      ”WATER HOW-MUCH?”
If the water is sitting there I reckon I could point at it and sign:
      ”HOW-MUCH?”
If you know I’m asking about amounts of liquid consumed and the water is sitting there I reckon I could point at it and do an “Eh?” facial expression.
So there you have it. I should have just pointed at some water and did an “Eh?” expression on my face.
      Cheers.

When you ask "how many cups of water do you drink daily?", I get confused when you put the word "cups" towards the end.
It seems to me like "cups" is part of the subject as in "cups of water".
Can you sign it "Cups water daily you drink how many?"

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  5 ปีที่แล้ว

The issue here is that the sign for "how-MANY?" is sometimes thought of as meaning "how much?" . The further you move the sign CUP from the end of the sentence the more you reduce the chance of getting a specific answer and instead getting a vague answer like "MUCH!" (As in "I drink a lot!")
Does that mean you "can't" sign it some other way?
Oh sure. You can create a "WH-Q" clause and ask "how-MANY CUP." at the end.
Hearing folks say "cups of water."
But please realize that is a Hearing thing not necessarily a Deaf thing.
For example: Hearing people tend to say: RED WHITE and BLUE.
Yet non-bilingual Deaf are just as likely to sign BLUE RED WHITE or RED BLUE WHITE. It doesn't "seem" funny nor odd.

How is what she’s wearing rude...? Maybe you’re just uptight 🙄 and anyway you’re showing more skin than she is

Hi what's the sign he does at 4:08- 4:10

That is me doing a very, very casual (mumbled actually) version of "I know."
The citation version is done up on the forehead with a bent hand.
Do you know how Hearies sometimes say "yaknow" (you know) or "yahbut" (yes, but), or "ahmguna" (I am going to)?
Deafies sometimes do the same thing but with handshapes.
I'm aware that it would be more clear if I had done the citation version of the sign -- but on the other hand (ha) these interactions with Katelyn and my other students let the audience see glimpses of real-life ASL variants thus better prepping you for real world interaction with Deaf who (rather often) use the same sorts of contractions and streamlined types of signing.
