I don't know why but I find the rise and fall of lion coalitions as well as the evolution of the pride and the politics of both, one of the most fascinating wildlife events of Africa.
Us too! And it's amazing that most cat species are solitary, and yet lions have such rich pride dynamics.

Hey, great vid, Nice little history lesson, clarified the dynamics nicely, (and very well presented to). It's been amazing watching the Tintswalo boys mature and start to strengthen as a coalition, but that also comes with a tinge of sadness too as I will never forget the fate of the once mighty Mapogo Coalition. I can only imagine how deeply it must impinge upon you when you're up close and see cubs killed or the demise of Buddy and Junior etc. (maybe like losing a much loved pet?) ... But thanks to your excellent virtual safaris We've been able to share some of that insight. Cheers, and kind regards, (NZ)
When the 3 meet up at the end of the video, I got a tear in my eye, its amazing how much love they have for eachother.
I remember the story behind that meetup. They had been fighting with each other for mating rights and they ended up all separated for a time. After all of that was over, the dominant male (mandevu, I believe) started calling for his brothers one morning. You could hear the return calls even though they were all miles apart. Late in the afternoon is when they finally all found each other and refreshed their brotherly bonds. At the time, it was very dangerous for them to be moving around isolated as they were, so I’m glad they were able to meet back up safely.

I love these kind of videos giving the history of the different coalitions movements the uprise and the Mighty Falls, along with the interactions with the Pride's and how the Prides move.

But there is no taking sides in the wild as the Circle of Life has its own way, and there’s no right nor wrong. The young lions look so handsome. To think both Sizanani + Scorro both had brothers who were killed by the Matimbas... And then they partnered up to be quite successful.
didnt one of the Sizanani males his brother that was killed by Matimbas had a injured hind leg

@@styx5131 I remember Sizanani used to look after his brother and kind of protect him until he lost him, that was really sad when that happened
Matimba males killed a lot of rivals in their time of reign..all 6 together then 5..then the split 3 and 2 ,northern 3 and southern of 2 ,ginger and h.b

Intrestingly soon we might see competition between sons of Thanda Impis - Tintswalo male and sons of Northern Matimbas - older Mbiri males over northen part of Manyeleti. Battle through generations.

Are the avoca/giraffe males mentioned the current Birmingham males in sabi sands?
I think that this strong coalition will be a dominant force, with luck on their side. I hope so as we have lost so many great lions, established and up and coming lions ie...the Orpen males, Matimba's, Prince Othawa, Nharu males and the tragic demise of the Vurhami males who were so ruthlessly dispatched by the scary Mjejane brothers. I hope the Tintswalo brothers make it.

Have coalitions been a thing since the beginning of time, like is there documented writing about such things from the early explorers or is it a newer occurrence as lands diminish?

4:30 you mention 2 lions got anthrax and died. Is that normal? Curious to understand how that happens.
Basically prey species (antelope, zebra, etc) and become infected by grazing in fields with spores from the bacteria in it. Lions either pick out the weakness and kill them or come across their fresh carcass and eat them, thus becoming infected themselves.
Interesting so these females do have cubs form the Orphen males lions what about the cubs they already had with the other pride are they still alive?
Great piece of history in the lion dynamics at Manyeleti. The Tintswalo Males coming from the same pride the Mbiri pride, would that mating with the Mbiri females eventually weaken the gene pool of the lion population within the area because of inbreeding

I’m afraid not. He’s been missing for months as of now. Unless we ventured out on his own and left the reserve, he probably was killed in an hunting accident.

Thanks for the video is their any way to know more about these lion stories? For example what happened to these 5 Avoca giraffe male lions? It was said they were 9 or 12 and they were responsible for some of the death of the Matimbas how did the Avocas die ?
I do know one was killed by the two Ross males that male was called Brutus he was the father of the Red Road male and the young Birmingham male.The other Avoca Giraffe male went on to be nomadic with his nephew the Red Road male and passed from old age.The other three I am not sure about.

@@ochoaguillermo638 Brutus was 100 percent killed by the Ross males.That is when the Ross males took control of the Birmingham and Red Road pride and Birmingham breakaway pride.
@@ochoaguillermo638 You can look on the Avoca Giraffe lions Facebook page.They were a pretty famous coalition so many people have information about them.I would look it up but I am very busy I don’t have any free time at this moment.
@@michaelcreswell7947 Incorrect. Brutus left the Birmingham Pride with his brothers to push into new territory in the Manyeleti. He died of injury and old age, NOT the Ross Males in 2019.

They have not yet bred with their natal pride. The females are not particularly keen. But it does happen sometimes that lions in-breed and its not a problem in terms of the genetic mix (if its one or two generations).

@@Joker-no1uh Agreed. The 2 Ross males currently dominant in the Ngala area are examples of this. They are not related and have rarely been seen being affectionate with each other, but the coexist just fine.
