tried it every single time the headless ape fell over, it didn't work a single time (yes i know you can do it i've seen it on youtube, i was just ballsing it up somehow), it just dealt normal damage and didn't pull anything out of him so eventually i ended up beating the headless ape by basically using the spear as a sword lol

I was never given pause by that attack. It doesn't look like a sweep. It certainly isn't a grab. All that remains is a thrust.
I knew it worked for swords and spears, just never thought nor tried to do it with a foot/leg

I was really disappointed about the armor pulling mechanic being so rare. Still a really good prosthetic, but I feel some potential being wasted.

The loaded spear cleave type is actually really good for the cluster of monkeys before Guardian ape after using the Firecracker’s spring function to stun them, it’s got way more range than Whirling Slash
I frankly think this one is underrated. The Spiral Spear is pretty good, it does fair amount of vitality and posture damage, has good range and above all is really cheap. You can charge for the full thrust attack (3 hits), pull back and do the follow up katana attack, all that for 1 spirit emblem. That's really nice for me.
And while I also think the cleave type spears are kinda hard to use, a good thing to keep in mind is that it has more range than you think.
This comment may be from 3 years ago, i have to agree with the Cleave-Type Spear. It's range is MASSIVE, it also counters the range of Isshin's Retreating Naginata Slash
I need this series. After 4 playthroughs I've only really found a use for shurikens and axe situationally. Will really add some spice to further playthroughs after knowing what all the prosthetics really do. I've already learnt a lot from this video. Didn't even know you could do two R2s to pull an enemy closer.
How have you beat the game 4 times but don't know a basic ass move????

Haven't tried it but I suspect if you throw some oil then use the flaming spear it would work better.
Literally the first thing I was looking for as I started scrolling through the comments. Oil obviously works wonders with the flame vent, so maybe it'll work with the spear too? And you don't have to have the upgraded flame vents to get some range on the fire attack
oil along with fire axe works way better than spear, does a shit ton of damage as well as posture, probably the best substitute for lazulite axe before you actually get the thing

The spear is one of my favorite tools, it's even more useful if you use it in the air IMO. It's a far safer option when done in the air.
using the upgraded finger whistle is more fun though :D
I did all the first phase of the Owl in Hirata with the spear, then went out of spirit emblems... still, it helped a lot, he couldn’t even come close to me. Mind you, he has a specific counter for the spear that if executed take 90% of your health. One have to hit him while he is running towards you. I feel like prosthetics in general are really underestimated by youtubers in their boss fights. Liked this video, very useful.
They are just not as usefull as they appear to be at first glance. Beside the firecracker and the loaded axe occasionally other prosthetics are not that handy... Sure you can use them if you want, but you are better of with being agressive and learning to parry.
he also uses that counter on your sword if you do a thrust attack
Most footage I saw from TH-camrs and streamers was pretty bad in terms of the Prosthetics and items use. Having said that, I agree with those who say the prosthetics are a little underwhelming. IMO the issue is that most of them are too situational. The armor pull thing form the spear is an example of something you can pull off so few times in the game. The axe is also pretty bad, unless it's against shielded enemies, which are also surprisingly rare. Later Shuriken and Loaded Spear are pretty much the only versatile prosthetics and they're not very flashy or strong (which is fair, considering their cost). And the worst thing about the prosthetics is the freaking upgrades tree. Sooo pigeon-holing!
@@yvesgomes I dont agree about prosthetics being underwhelming. After playing for a while i realized prosthetics are damn good to pull of comboes. The fight with owl at hirata made me realize it. There are many combat arts which synergize with prosthetics. Like nightjar slash goes well with any prosthetic which has a gap closing skill (eg spear and shuriken).
Spear pull is almost always usefull where you are fighting a bunch of enemies together to pull someone from the group.I agree that armor thing is a bit gimmicky but its a nice thing to have none the less.
Firecrackers, flame vent and mist raven go well with any combat art or prosthetic which has a wind up animation. (eg shadowrush/fall ichimnoji, cleave spear etc).
Axe is good for trading health/posture at almost any point of the game.
Divine abduction is mainly good for farming.
Whistle for stealth and gimmicks.
Umbrella is the most general purpose blocking tool as it blocks piercing attack (eg thrusts and attacks from sheath).
I personally found sabimaru to be a bit underwhelming as i could not get the timing of the R1 dodge of sabimaru but i think it will feel better to to use it once get the hang of it.
in fact two of the comboes that (hit-jump-kick- firecracker-shadowfall/shuriken-chasing slice) owl pulls of can be done by sekiro too. Every prosthetic in the game can be used in flashy ways but you just have to invest some time on it to think of what comboes well with it.

Leaping Flame does have a hidden property that can be pretty useful, though: The flames from it scare some enemies.
The re-spawning corrupt villagers especially. One sweep of it can take out an entire group, and freeze any nearby survivors in terror.
The fire umbrella can do the same-ish thing for one emblem, though it's range is worse, and it doesn't do any direct damage on deployment.
Why waste spirit emblems on dudes that die in one hit
@@orochifire It's not like spirit emblems are hard to come by, and it's a pretty decent farming spot if you don't mind fighting glass-cannons since they respawn so many times each.
Personally I find it pretty dang useful, but hey, you play like you like.
@@LORDOFDORKNESS42 What do you farm there? Fat? I find the late section of the temple to be a better farming spot for mid-game.

I'll fairly concede that there's probably much better spots, but personally find the villagers a nice balance of easy and rewarding. Like, easy enough that you can listen to a video or something and hit that grinding zen, but still hard enough that you need to pay a little attention.
@@LORDOFDORKNESS42 If you don't mind the spoiler, the late temple cave has many enemies that you can one shot by jumping on them, along with one of those agile strong monks at the beginning, which you can back stab. So you kill a bunch of enemies that aren't considered too weak, without needing to really fight. With the bell bonus and Mibu baloons, you also earn a decent amount of candy, Iron and Magnetite.
My favorite prosthetic has finally got the attention it deserves!
In the Owl fight (the first one) I noticed that after he throws his bomb if you hit him with the spiral spear it does extra damage on him if you time it just right.
I remember the first time I tried it he mikiri countered me for massive damage lol

he normally counters a thrust attack, but without much difficulty, i could thrust immediately after the bomb and 100% of the time he didnt counter me. pretty easy to do, i think you even have enough time to sideways dodge twice to avoid the smoke cloud

I've found that the loaded spear also works really well against the Senpou Assassins - the ones without shield hats anyway. Its reach and speed easily negate their agility. Pull them in and slice them up.
There is one more big use of the Loaded Spear, it can be used after the deathblow of an enemy, it works best on the old dragons which come before the Divine dragon.
To use it jump from the tree towards a dragon and deathblow and after that right click(I played on pc). I think its R2 on controller.
The Dragons can be taken out very easily with this. Give this a Try
No, the slash happens whenever you use an aerial deathblow on an old dragon regardless of loaded spear being equipped. You don't even have to do anything else, just aerial deathblow them.

If anyone wants to be flashy in the Sword Saint fight, mist raven through his attack, use the 3 hit spiral spear combo into his back then One Mind if you're brave enough or the follow up R2 if you're not.
Costs 6 spirit emblems to pull off for some mad vitality and posture damage.

Probably my favorite prosthetic tool aside from iron fortress. Both because of it's overall efficiency, and because I just really like spears in general

I platinum'd this game already but I still enjoy watching these guide videos. Goes to show that I missed quite a few things throughout my playthrough.
Niiiice, so the only trophy I have left is to get all skills, I’m on NG+ 4 so should I just make a totally new save or should I just Jeep grinding on NG+ 4? Any tips you have you maximize XP gain/get skills faster would help too

Cleave is actually pretty useful in the group of monkeys in bodhisattva valley.... Rest... I don't think so
My favorite way to handle them is an undirected finger whistle. They are all affected by it, causing them to attack one another.
Yeah i did this except used the leaping spear (just extra fire damage) and they all died with one hit
@@eurologic That's the thing with the fire version... you don't need it. The enemies that don't block an don't have poise are usually one-shotted by the regular cleave anyways, making the extra cost of the fire version pointless.

the chasing follow up attack is best used with a ninja star. just throw a ninja star, and immediately attack, it closes distance very fast, and works great with the whistle finger, if you long press the whistle, and then immediately use the attack button , which swings at the whistle like a baseball bat, and sends it to another location. then as the enemy goes to the projected whistle and has their back to you, you can ninja star attack, and follow up slash.

The spiral spear is extremely useful against the first phase of sword saint isshin, just wait till he finishes a combo and hit him with the spear, dose big damage, makes that phase super simple to get to his final phases more consistently

I'd like to say a thing or two about the cleave-type spear (particularly leaping flame) since it has become one of my favorite prosthetics to use:
The range on the cleave is absolutely massive, so with proper spacing you can find ways to get the cast off against a group of enemies. Also, if an opponent blocks the strike, it will send them sliding backwards a good distance which is great for giving you space to heal. You can also make great use of the range of the spear to deal a big chunk of posture damage vs. enemies that don't parry without closing the distance on them. One of my favorites is to use the big cleave when one of the large Taro troops starts doing a rampage attack since going for spiral spear against them is generally not safe during this attack. I'll admit that in about 60% of scenarios, the spiral spear is your best pick though.
I think the issue with the scenario where your surrounded is that this really shouldn't happen often. Players don't generally intentionally try to become surrounded, and scenarios where you are, there's a decent chance you'll die anyway, even with the spear. Additionally, you can always just run away if you are surrounded, and then go back to picking enemies off one by one.
I feel bad for Lady Butterfly, so many way to cheese her to death....

Sxar Face If I can give you a recommendation, you can parry the bull's attack which will give you chance for 3 attacks, I didn't think you could parry it so had to do it the hard way

I love the implication of the headless ape centipede. The ape IS its armor.
Can't believe I've been neglecting the spear so much. Looks crazy good.
You can speed up the flaming spears burn status by throwing oil at the enemy first. It’s a good way to build up some burn from a distance if you can land a few attacks. Still not very cost effective, but a reliable way to build burn without the flame vent and having to be right in an enemy’s face.
I toyed around with that quite a bit and found that it's not a very good or consistent way to apply burn vs. most enemies. Flaming spear is really nice vs. red-eyed enemies though but there aren't that many of them around for most of the game.
An easier way to get in their face with flame vent is to have the Mid-Air Prosthetic skill and use the flame vent as you jump towards them.
Ronwise Gamgee that’s true but also a bit useless, seeing as there’s no real way to follow up from the air. When I use Flame Vent I prefer to be on the ground so I can make use of Living Weapon and really hammer an opening with constant fire and physical damage.
Leaping Flame is AWESOME against Ogre though.
The preparation and range is better than any other flame tool plus it can set ogre on fire , immobile orge and only cost 2 as compare to 3 of the other tools.
My favorite, it wreaks enemy Ninja, always had it equipped.
FYI, Leaping Flame is very useful. It's not for setting enemies on fire. It's for hitting them with a fire attack, which against Red Eyes enemies stuns them long enough for you to lay into them really hard. There is a fight in this game in the abandoned dungeon against two Red Eyes enemies at the same time (!) and sweeping the spear to stun both was instrumental for me in being able to chip one of them down and defeat him quickly to make the fight more fair.
But i will never repeat the Quest because it's disapointing reward

Big thing I remember of the spear is to NOT use it against Owl. MF will Mikiri that for a near instant kill, same with the charged stab.
One of my favorite things about fighting Owl is how he kicks your butt with all your own techniques. :)
Man that charge stab was my go to attack, then he did that shit to me I had to instantly change my strategy

@@utisti4976 His worst moves are also his most vulnerable. Best times to punish him are after dodging the spinning downslash, and if he misses with the antiheal bomb. Some people say parry everything he does, but I had more luck dodging, unlike most other enemies. Good luck, he's a beast. :)
Oh, and after he uses the smoke bomb you can spam the lock-on button to find him again, but it's probably safer to spam dodge first.
Yeah I really took liking to the spear almost immediately after getting it. It adds alot to you regular combat.

@@damp2269 if you parry 2 sword strikes he will do an overhead which is easily parried and staggers him. If you hit him with the spear while he is staggered it does MASSIVE posture damage. Way more health and posture damage than R1. I use this method solely to beat him every time (7 playthroughs) and it makes his phase 2 so much easier
@@scarlet__eye9489 i know about the overhead deflection but i think that just spamming r1 does about as much damage and is a lot safer so i was wondering really much of a dmg difference there is to see if it's worth changing my attacks. headless ape is quite possibly one of the easiest bosses for me he is full of opportunities but shaving a few seconds is welcomed.
@@damp2269 of you use the spiral spear the difference in vitality and posture damage compared to R1 is crazy. There's a reason every speedrunner uses that strat on the Guardian Ape :)

I really feel like they should have been a bit more lenient with the cost of using your prosthetic arm. Also, I think you're meant to use oil to set enemies aflame quickly.
I wish they utilized the spiral spear instead of the cleave for the fire upgrade or add a move to perform either/or... I find the nightjar reversal and the chasing slice skill allow you to have incredible mobility... But still rather flame cent to imbue sword (that would be a good addition to the final upgrade as well)

Probably the only prosthetic I've never used... Just started NG+ and am at lady butterfly maybe I'll try it out since literally the last time I fought her we both died at the same time (my final death) and had to put in another game for a while to take a "frustration breather"... 😅
Good breakdown. I disagree with a few things.
The cleave is actually good against swarms of weaker enemies, like the many monkeys near the end of Sunken Valley, or the Mibu zombies. In some cases, it's good to get very close and use the cleave, instead of performing a back stab death blow. I find this version of the prosthetic the second most useful. My favorite was the spiral spear, because of its cost benefit. It is pretty versatile to deal pretty much guaranteed damage with relative safety and for its low cost.
The regular version is only worth using to pull armor (which can be done against like... two enemies in the whole game). The thrusting version is pretty useless against enemies that block - and enemies that don't block will likely either trade with you or be so easy to kill that you wouldn't need to spend Spirit Emblems anyways. Finally, the fire version is decent. It can be useful if you manage to pull off consecutive strikes against multiple enemies, to inflict burn (which can be done through the block)... but you really need to use it multiple times in a row.
That's a nice guide i would just ad that i wouldn't recommend chasing slice because after you hit an enemy with medium attack speed it's their turn to attack you.
So best way is to Spear attack into combat art like pull them into fliating passage, there are lots of combination's so experiment with them.
Very useful against enemies who can block. Not as useful as flame vent against bosses.
Comboes pretty well with nightjar reversal.
For blocking or annoying jumping enemies go shuriken - chasing slice - nightjar out - charged spear( use spiral for vit damage late game)- pull chasing slice - nightjar in/or out depending on where you want to be. Best looking combo i found in the game. And best thing in this combo is that you dont use normal attacks in this so you dont flinch even if you get blocked.
Flame vent is good for three reasons;
1. There are no other prosthetic in game which inflicts status as reliably as charged vent at the cost of 3 emblems.
And its versatality comes from living force and/or the knockback which lets you use it both offensively and defensively.
2. Extremely easy to use in almost every encounter once you know your enemies attacks and comboes.
3. Unlike sabimaru you can use items(oil) to enhance the effect and lower resistances.
That moment when you’re first advanced tier upgrade is the flame cleave, rip

Unfortunately you’re better off just doing a quick parry to most enemies and just using Shuriken and firecrackers when needed. The other ones are very situational and usually not worth the emblem cost
Firecrackers, huh!? I didn't use them much. Stuck mostly to shuriken and spiral spear, for the vanilla situations. Late game, the fan is godlike, though.

Yeah give the firecrackers a shot seriously, it damages the posture on beast enemies, but pretty much every enemy with eyes is stunned by them. Even the final boss flinches and gives you a free hit or two.
@@robkoh7290 Oh. I meant the feather fan thingy, that turns enemies around. Late game stronger mobs can be back stabbed easily, for 3 or 4 spirit emblems.
Is there a list of enemies that can be de-armored by the spear pull? I'd love to know them as I couldn't use that option of the spear in any of my 3 playthroughs. I tried it against two armored mini-bosses (the spear wielder in the area where you find the spear and the armored knight) but it didn't do anything. I've heard that the ogres had chest plates that can be pulled of but I didn't see anything.
lagideath it only works on enemies that wear poorly fitted armor. for example, the bell-wielding enemy before the abandoned dungeon entrance.
@@juicepouches22 But what is classified as "poor fitted"? The description states (if I remember correctly) that enemies who force themselves into heavy armor are often loose in it and so that armor can be torn off with the spear. That's why I tried the two bosses as they had heavy armor on them. I didn't see any armor on the bell giant though.
@@juicepouches22 I've tried it on that same guy and it seems to do jack diddly squat lol. Hit him with the thing 6 or 7 times to no avail. Tried 3 mutations of the spear separately several times and none seemed to do anything. /armorstripping/ ehhhh
Draven_Sword Hit him from the front and tap R2 again before the recovery animation ends to pull out his armor and you should be able to do more damage with regular attacks.
The drunkard before you get to the demon hatred. His armor can been torn off.

Thanks for the video. Can you please do firecrackers next/soon. I've been upgrading it but all the new version seem to have a longer cast time. They seem to be worse than the base form imo
That's not cast time, their active duration increases so the stunning effect stays longer and enemies can walk into it, kinda like throwing up a wall in front of you for a second or two.

If you're having trouble with some late game enemies, such as those white spirit enemies, the fan can be used in a way to take them out really easily. using living weapon with the fan allows you to quickly dash and slice them which also forces them to turn around allowing you to death blow right off the bat.

@@andieznutz6438 ye. It's neat for the lore implications, but not something I'd use against them. Having high enough attack power makes the monks killable in like 4 hits or less. I'm about halfway through ng+2

I would assume you would use oil if you intended to set any enemy on fire. But you are right that the last upgrade is still not worth it even considering oil.

Yes, you are.
I actually kill lady butterfly at 1st attempt (along with only mist noble), i guess it is because i saw all the comment about dying to her and only go to get her after 2 times HP upgrade.
Does oil make the flame spear ignite enemies in a single hit?
If so, it'd be cheaper than the 3 spirit emblem flame barrel.
I don't know if oil ignites immediately, but the flame vent does a lot more damage with the hold R2 than the spear does and it pushes you way back to safety while doing it. You can also use the master rank skill in the shinobi tree to apply fire to your blade for a few seconds after using it. The flaming axe of the monkey does more than the flame vent if you land all 3 hits, but you never will against a boss so it's not great.
The flaming spear is only really good if you're farming Mibu village. The constantly respawning enemies there hate fire, and if you do the huge sweep it will make them all recoil in fear so you can easily just walk up and deathblow a few of them, or even just cleave them all and watch as they burn to death. Not necessary though, since you can just use whirlwind and kill them all anyway.
A good combo I found against late game bosses is to toss oil then use the flame vent normal attack, just the quick burst of fire not the hold to charge, and then press R1 for the flaming sword. After that, immediately swap to Piercing Sabimaru and hit R2 once, then R1 to swap combos, then spam R2 to hit them 6 times with both Sabimaru and your flaming sword at the same time. Just spamming R2 with Sabimaru without the R1 in between will still cause you to hit 6 times, but you'll alternate between your sword and Sabimaru, so it's not as effective. The boss will block all of these hits so you wont do a lot of direct VIT damage with the attacks, but you will ignite and poison them through their guard while dealing a huge amount of posture damage which cannot be recovered while they're on fire. The poison and burn will slowly eat away at their VIT as well. The only downside is that you'll run out of spirit emblems really fast, so it's not as effective against bosses with lots of DB marks. Also makes the skills that give you more spirit emblems and the knife that gives you +5 really important.
Alternatively, I just use the phantom Kunai or the Lazuli Shuriken and bait out an attack, then jump backwards and toss one at them while they're open. Jumping away has Iframes, but the window is a lot smaller than if you dodged, so you have to time it perfectly. This technique gives you free massive VIT damage for 1 or 2 spirit emblems.
@@Malgana Damn! Those are some really cool ideas! Respect! I hadn't noticed the benefit of swapping to the other stance of poison sword. Used the regular combo and wondered why it sucked so terribly. I thought the R1 in the combo was supposed to actually dodge. Tried it out and it didn't work so well, so I just abandoned it altogether.
I think this combo might actually be worth it for the late phases of some bosses, especially the last one.

The divine flame indeed has native divine confetti properties though. If you use living weapon the buff is identical to confetti, but it only lasts about 10 seconds

he used the consumable that gives you poise but prohibits you from using resurrection nodes. as you can see, his nodes are all full and crossed off with a reddish line
