This video give me so much comfort. The workshop around my lathe looks very much the same - shavings and bits or ornamental firewood that I think will be useful one day (but seldom are). I got so many of my techniques from Richard Raffan's books and videos when I started turning and now I find my turning space is almost like his........and so is my hairstyle, or lack of it.
It’s great to see a pro in action, the dust collecting hood is brilliant, just like to mention that when I saw you had so many chucks, I thought maybe that’s excessive but dropping a screw in the shavings and spending 20 min with a magnet only to find the screw wasn’t in the shavings how quickly changed my mind, and then I find companion chucks, sold without jaws, I’m saving up to get one, thanks for your valuable information

Just a curious question; I have seen Alan Batty's video on the skew chisel. You both seem to be virtuoso wood turners, and it came to me that since you both are about the same age, did you ever get together on teaching, or anything such as that?
I'd been using a 3/4-in skew in production for 10 years when I met Alan around 1980 when I went to teach at Craft Supplies in England where he ran the turning courses. I'm self-taught and developed a radiused skew, whereas Allan served a formal apprenticeship and used more traditional techniques. I saw him regualrly over 25 years at workshops and symposiums and gained many insights on using skew chisels watching Allan.

I've had the same arrangement with chucks and abrasives off the end of the headstock in at lest six workshops, usually in a small space. A turner with a couple of lathes, one bandsaw and one sander can work comfortably in a 3x4m space and that's usually been me. But I also usually had at least 40 square meters of storage for around 1000 roughed out bowls and a few tonnes of blanks and boards.
What a fatuous comment, particularly since there are no piles of wood or blanks or roughed bowls all of which are stored elsewhere and always have been. This is the turning area around the lathe. What wood there is is in the form of useful chucks. This arrangement has served me well for over 25 years as a production turner, so I'm wondering what you think a workshop should look like.
