  • Hi guys! I have not really addressed this topic of being a woman in Italy much less a woman alone. Pete has been traveling and I do a lot of things solo so I think a this point I can address what a solo woman can expect when she arrives to start her new life here in Italy. I hope you find this helpful.

My experience as a single/retired woman was the single or widowed Italian women were open and friendly. 3:29 Otherwise it was lonely until I met other expats. I was willing and open. I wanted to assimilate. I spoke Italian. I was not welcomed by Italians. I hear this from many. I’m returning to Italy. I’m aware it’s far more challenging being a single retired woman. It’s a very different experience than a couple. I would like to start a group for single women in Puglia… Molise, Abruzzo ..

This is what I feared might be the case, but then, here in Australia, if I went to live in a small town as a single mature age woman, I would encounter the same thing. Married women organise couples' social life, and they don't like single women around their men.

That is a great idea Carol. There is a big expat community in Mola and that is close to Polignano where you want to be. Let me know!

I guess it depends n the married woman. I have seen that at times but on the other hand I have seen great and well adjusted ladies.

    Great video!
As a single woman that wants to retire soon in Italy, that has been on my mind quite a bit Chris. I do take Italian lessons with Antonella (which is fantastic and I highly recommend!), I think it's just the fact that you have absolutely no one at the start, which is a bit scary.
Do you know of a group of single expat females that would like to start a chat to discuss further and help each other out? Let me know what you think of that.
Thanks for all you do to help"All the single ladies"😊

Hey Chris. I love your videos. This is something that has been on my mind a lot and to be honest its the thing that makes me most afraid to take the leap. Being able to connect with other expat women nearby would make a big difference though. What town is is it that you, and Bonnie, live in?

I! I am in Scalea and there is a large expat community here and a lot of people who come for extended vacations. There are always people around when you need to speak English I know I advocate learning Italian and everyone should however sometimes your brain has to rest and you need to hear English.

For me, it's been slightly different in Italy but I am in Rome and I have a friend (not a lover) here who helps me so I think people tend to be jealous (esp other women) or think that I don't need help which is not totally true. I would love to have some more real friends. And I speak Italian very well, everyone says so.

HI Lisa, I am so glad you have a friend. It sometimes makes a lot of difference. I found that if I sense any type of jealousy at all, I make a point of winning over the wife so that we are friends as much as the male person I am working with. It seems to always work and then you have two friends and become part of the family. I hope you find more friends and I am sure you will.

@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC thank you but actually my friend doesn't have a wife anymore. It seems like the others in this area are jealous of that, even those who are married. Perhaps because as he says they are jealous that their husbands don't always help out that way.

I think Italy is a "you reap what you sow" community and USA is "you reap what you take" attitude.....not in all situations, but lately not good.

I have found this in places too. there are still some places in the US that are communities but I miss how it was when we were kids.
