  • Today we Talk Toilets! Skirted toilets to be exact, and we have Kohler in the house helping out with this installation! Skirted toilets are still new to me in fact, most plumbers usually install and repair exposed trap-way toilets, meaning all of the pipes and inner workings of the toilet are exposed. On a skirted toilet all those inner workings are still there just hidden by porcelain for a sleek, clean look. With the new Kohler, ready lock system installing one of these skirted toilets makes it SOO much easier. Luke Bartel from Kohler, came in to help explain what makes these toilets so unique compared to many others on the market. Leave me a comment and let me know if you've ever installed a skirted toilet and how easy was it for you? I had assistance installing it but it can easily be done with one person! Anyways, hope you guys enjoy it! Thanks again to Ferguson for sponsoring this video and thank you, Luke, from Kohler for coming out and explaining their awesome products! For more information about Ferguson products and what they do for the plumbing community please click on the links below!
Everything You NEED to know about toilets is here! I break down all the components of your average toilet and sometimes even talk about toilets most people haven't seen so that if you are ever in a situation where your toilet is not working properly, whether your toilet is clogged up, or your toilet tank won't stop running you can easily find a solution to repair or replace the components of your toilet to get it back to working condition!

I recently did a highrise and installed 300-400 of the kohler skirted toilets. They may seem intimidating, being a little different from floor mount installs, but they're actually a breeze and this video is a great install guide.

A skirted toilet (non Koehler) isn’t that tough if you plan ahead and have a few extra items to help out. It IS a two-person job, but I’ve got it down to needing an unskilled extra person for about 15 seconds.
    “Extras” you’ll need:
2 “blocks” - pieces of scrap 4x4 lumber about 12” long (nailed up 2x4 scraps to make 4x4 works fine)
2 pieces of 3/8” or 1/2” flexible plastic tubing about 8-10 inches long
After affixing the flange bolts and setting the wax ring (or other seal), place one block (on its side) on the floor between the wall and the toilet flange, centered on the flange. Place the other block on the floor just in front of the flange, also centered on the flange.
Pick-up the toilet and set it on the blocks, approximately centered over the flange. Now the toilet is now “hovering” about 4” above the floor and flange and nobody is straining to hold it there.
On one side of the toilet, pass a piece of tubing up through the bolt hole in the toilet and then down over the flange bolt. Do the same on the other side. Shift the toilet on the blocks as needed to line things up. The tubing pieces will act as guides for threading the bolts into the toilet.
With your extra person standing by, pick up the toilet about 1/2” and have your “helper” snatch out the 2 blocks, then lower the toilet onto the flange.
Pull the tubing off the bolts, make sure everything is aligned as you want, and bolt the toilet into place.

I installed this toilet and for me it’s way too heavy to lift with tank on. Putting the tank on later in a small space is a nightmare, the back nut and washer were extremely hard to reach. I had to put painters tape to hold the washers. The racket has too be the exact size, no room for an adjustable wrench. I had to change the flush valve for a non Kohler brand because the yellow gaskets kept leaking. Had to redo the whole tank process. The three bolts take forever to get even. I had a clog and the toilet leaked at the rubber seal , seem like a real weakness of design. The 360 flush feature is great, really cleans the bowl. If doin over I would get the old fashioned 360 flush.

I'm not a plumber and never installed a toilet before. I bought a Toto bidet that was skirted and uses the same type trap. I had to drill new holes in the porcelain with diamond bits. The rest I thought was pretty simple. Love that Toto BTW. Game changer no more toilet paper.

Installed an EAGO brand toilet 5 years ago - same 'skirted' design although I wasn't aware that's what it was called. It had a similar ABS assembly. Easy enough to install. The only minor pain was hooking up the supply line. There's a vanity cabinet on one side and the tub on the other, so I had to reach back there blind.

  • @tombartlett2519
    @tombartlett2519 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Just completed the installation of the second skirted toilet. It was technically a 12 inch rough in, but there was a heat register behind the existing toilet. The exposed trap fit easily over this. I had to buy a 10 inch rough in adapter. $90!!!! Kohler would not let me do an exchange! I had to drill through the tile floor to mount the attachment brackets. I'd never drilled tile before, but some inexpensive ceramic bits from Harbor Freight and a TH-cam video made it easy. The first toilet I did had improperly installed tank bolts that didn't extend far enough to attach the tank and it took a while to make them work. Same thing with this one, plus one of the bolts was missing completely! Kohler sent me a set of new bolts without charge, and did so fairly quickly. So, both are in and not leaking. But the refill valves on both are both are hinky; sometimes they work and fill the tank properly, sometimes they shut off before the tank is properly filled, and sometimes they don't shut off completely, leaving the toilet running. Even when they work properly they take 2-3 minutes to refill the tank. Yes, I used brand new fill hoses, and they both do the same thing.

Curious whether it is a Philips or flathead screwdriver on their cam system. We have three of these but they must be an early generation or the builder didn't install them as they aren't 12” from wall and I cannot engage any cam screw on either side so I can’t get the bowl off the floor. None of the Kohler videos match my persuade valves. Kohler sent me a new fill and dual flush valve and the top button None were the same as the ones I was trying to replace and the button couldnt even get through the lid. Fortunately I could get the tank off because they had clipped the tank nuts in the bowl.

I’m not convinced that poop will not get stuck in that small 90 degree floor flange adapter. I’m even more concerned that a toilet auger will damage the adapter. These skirted toilets have been around for less than ten years and I would read reviews before purchasing.

Hi rodger, I have a question unrelated to toilets, sorry. I work as a plumber in California and I just got a call from someone who lives 2 hours away with a leak in his water main under the slab. He had mentioned a thing about Aquapea, I have never heard of the product but I had found a 30 second clip of you talking about it but not really giving any answers to the questions you had asked in the clip. So my question is, is Aquapea a good product? Does it cause any damages to fixtures or cause potential clogs in the lines? Is it one of those "works as advertised" things? I'm not normally one to look for shortcuts but I'm interesting in knowing if the product works or not so I don't feel so dumb next time a customer brings it up.

If I’m not mistaking: Toto invented the adapter floor flange (distance to wall, 3 models: 10’’, 12’’, 14’’ adapters) almost 20 years ago. Their patent rights are long passed so other companies are making the same, why: inventory. The toilet itself is always the same, only the adapters change. Toto also starter the BIG flap in the tank of the toilet. Toto has not innovated since (from my point of view).

I don't know what kind of trap is inside that toilet
but you're going to have a hell of a time getting an auger to reach the sewer line.

We just installed a Kohler Gleam. I have never had to use an auger on a toilet and hopefully never will.

The reason I installed 2 of these in my home is that there are no flat foot or bolts at the bottom where condensation always collects dust. The second reason was that the tank-top lid is flat instead of domed, so kleenex boxes, etc., stay in place. What I learned after installing the first one is they flush right now...I mean instantly. I was scared when I unpacked the first box but it all made simple, perfect sense and is actually easier than the normal toilet install.

The biggest thing I think you guys forget to point out for the do it yourself or is to mark a plum line outside of where the skirted toilet would sit marking where the holes will line up so that they can drop the toilet straight down without an issue, and that you use a rubber ring instead of a wax ring so that they can reset the toilet if needed.

Opened 3 boxes at HD to find one without defects on porcelain. Directions suck. The system of plastic brackets wont get tight enough to keep toilet from turning, on trun too much ans -snap the plastic mounting nut retainer broke inside. FAIL ON DESIGN! I suggest caulking on base , because a home inspector will wiggle toilet and say its loose because it turns. Im returning it because of poor finish on the porcelain rim and broken plastic. I have done hundreds of toilets, not a fan of rhe plastic mounting brackets.

I wish there is more attention to the smart devices that they offer. I know most of the plumbers I know shy away from them. I am guessing because they are I.T. Oriented. Smart devices are the direction a lot of homeowners are wanting to go.
