This series should have been named Legend of Lu Buwei... because Hao Lan and Zichu simply had to survive as Buwei sacrificed and paved the way for them... that's how it came across to me from watching this series. If Buwei didn't buy her from the start, she'd probably be dancing in the street and Zichu still a prisoner. Only because he came in their lives, he changed their fate for them.
I didn't watch the whole series thoroughly but I got the feeling Lu Buwei was unfairly portraited as a common merchant from low family background, not from royal family or high rank officer's and not highly educated, but with great desire for power he could be very cruel such as sacrificing his two servants. His intelligence could be questioned as it seemed he was manipulated and schemed by Zichu and Haolan. He has ever said he was used like the king's paw or in the end he still loved and offered her the precious pearl like all of his wealth. I found it very contradicting to what he himself successfully attempted and achieved saving them, bringing them to the throne and setting foundation for the great Qing.
I understand the desire for the name change but the theme was Men using women for power. Trying to highlight the women used by these men of power. Which is why it ends with her son saying he doesn't need a woman to tell him to conquer the world. The fun of using actual history as the framework for one's art.
Lu Buwei is my favorite character he's wise charismatic and humourous ❤

“Historical records: In the ninth year of Emperor Qin Shihuang, King Qin（Zheng Er） put down Lao`ai's rebellion and asked the Empress dowager (Hao Lan) to move to Yong city. In the following year, Lu Buwei was dismissed as his prime minister. It was not until Mao Jiao, a member of the State of Qi, persuaded King Qin that King Qin (Zheng Er) welcomed the Empress dowager (Hao Lan) back to live in Xianyang with King Qin. About a year later, Lu Buwei was worried day and night, fearing that he would be killed, and committed suicide by drinking poison. In the nineteenth year of Emperor Qin Shihuang, the Empress dowager (Hao Lan) died and was posthumously crowned the Di Taihou (honorific) and was buried together with King Zhuang Xiang (her husband Zi Chu) at Zhi Yang.”

This was well written and produced. The value and sacrifice of women in Chinese history was highlighted. The story kept major historical facts and it didnt have one of those weird endings. Great job.

@@some1ulove162 I personally believe it was a happy ending! Haolan reached her goal! I think people feel that she should have had a man at her side, but I think the point of this film is that a woman rarely wins because she's taught to sacrifice herself for a man and men rarely do the same.
I really loveee that Pearl gift and Haolan's smile 😭.. Buwei and Haolan's story really makes me cry 😭..woww Buwei left but he still gave Haolan 28 stars gift through the ministers that pleads for her 💙.
everyone upset about the ending, imagine this, Lu Buwei and Li Haolan are reincarnated together in the time of Yanxi Palace. same actors after all... but then you'll complain about Fuheng and Wei Yingluo hahaha

After watching this and the TV drama. The first emperor should be Buwei because he lay the foundation for the king by recruiting the most brilliant minds and made bribing great again. He was also famous for writing a book with zero flaw. Master Lü's Spring and Autumn Annals
I'll show yall the TV show link after my short review.
Buwei is so wise. He want to spare those that lost the war and use them for farming and farming means no starvation. And now he just captured 5 cities from Zhao without waging war. I wish he work together with the young king (15 years old) instead of doing everything by himself.
Li si seem desperate to be relevant and he'll do anything to undermine Buwei long term strategy to unified the other states without large scale slaughters.
I remember watching Li si on King War. He picked the stupid crown prince and left the kinder prince to commit suicide at the boarder by using a fake edict because he only care about himself.
Li si death wasn't pleasant either after he got outplayed by an eunuch.
I forgot how Qin fall, but I remembered it was due to heavy taxes and the king was out of touch with it people.
Li Si didn't think long term like Buwei, such as looking out for the people.
I remember watching Kings War and the guy who plays BuWei also played Han Xin.
Han Xin advisor gave him a pretty good advice and that's to be the people person.
BuWei is now the people person, but Li si will help king changed that lol.

I hate how the show make those two women so dumb on this episode.
The empress had casually sex with anyone she wanted and the maid who served tea.
None of them bother giving credit for the Prime Minister Buwei brilliant plot to get prince Yi from Zhao to become a hostage to Qin on his own.
Not to mention tricking Zhao Prime Minister to return the once hostage Qin prince back to his native home with a simple rumor.
The show is trying to tell me how the Qin Dynasty didn't last long because of all the dumb people surrounding the king.
The empress and the maid can get their revenge once Zhao empire crumble due to infighting, but they want revenge now.
The other thing I didn't about how BuWei is the mind behind Qin being so strong. He is a master strategist that care for the people. He have long term strategies that require patience.
I feel like those 2 women and the King will ruined BuWei plan, a plan that will prevented mass scale slaughters from unification of China and how the people will be treated after the unification.
After watching King Wars, where the warlords raise up to rebel again Qin rule, I can't help by blame those impulsive and stupid who surrounded the king.

Rip Gan Luo, the boy genius who convinced the Zhou state to give up 5 cities without using a single soldiers.
The king killing him was unjust since they're both the same age, 15 years old. I sense jealousy and stupidity.
Li si on this episode feel like a traitor who sow discord between the prime Minister BuWei and the king.
Qin may accomplished a lot of things, but now I know it was mainly due to BuWei and his smart officials.

I feel like they just put any girl out there to be the king friend.
Just dress up a maid and you have a fair lady.
Update: the king mother is not very bright. She send her son gf back to Chu without realizing he's into her.
And she wonder why her son won't greet her return at the palace gate.
She and her son act rashly and easily falls into enemy trap.

It feel so awkward to see the king fall in love with the lady from chu, where her father purposely throw her out to be trample by the king mount...
The king mother is worst, she should knowwho's behind that girl and she keep falling for the old lady trap.
Why can't they all get along? The lady from chu seem ok, but she's a victim being use by his evil father and grandmother to be their spy.

For how they built up the entire series, it's kinda sad to see Lu Buwei and Hao Lan parted that way. They'd been in each other's life for so long through so much hardship, as lovers or friends.

After sleuthing in the actual history, it makes me sad for Haolan because no matter how brave, clever, talented, honest, and beautiful a woman can be in her lifetime, she will only be remembered as the mother of the king and her “so-called” affairs. For everyone dissatisfied with the ending, unfortunately history doesn’t have fulfilling endings. (If you watch the CE show, Reign, about Mary Queen of Scotts, it’s another show that depicts the life of a brave and clever woman but is ultimately seen as a pawn in birthing the heir that unites England and Scotland.)
Yes! Thank you! Finally someone who gets it. I was actually impressed with this series. The Lady Zhao/hao lan was done dirty by historians. We know so much about the men during this time but the women behind those men were so easily written off. She did take lovers after Zichu died but that does not make her an evil person. She has 2 sons with Lao Ai but unfortunately because their relationship and secret children were revealed Lao Ai made a rash decision to rebel against the king. He was executed and his children killed for fear of them threatening the kings position. He striped his mother of her titles because he felt she betrayed him. It's sad because she wasn't given a choice in the matter of marriage. We can't judge the decisions taken by ancient kings either. So sad.
@Cadence it was sad and at the time because of her status as the kings mother she would not have been able to marry. So she had lovers in secret. Remember she was very young when her husband died. She fell in love with Lao Ai. I feel bad for her because sometimes love makes us stupid. But the king did what was necessary by executing Lao Ai because he was too ambitious and was plotting to put his son on the throne. Unfortunately the 2 boys also had to be killed. It was different times back then. So we can't judge what those kings did. I think the king did what he had to do.

If I'm not mistaken she lived in another province away from the king and perhaps she rationalise that she could keep her secrets safe? I really feel bad for her tho. I can imagine being that her son was the crown prince she didn't get to mother him like a normal woman would get to mother her child. Being queen she never fully had the love of her husband the king. He had his subjects and they came first. Any good ruler puts their people first. Still as a woman she also had needs to be loved and give love. She was very smart. She did manage to keep her lover and children secret for a long time. If only Lao Ai wasn't so ambitious. Maybe their secret would have been safe.

All in all, my fave characters were: Hao Lan, Yin Xiao Chun, Han Qiong Hua, and Princess Ya. The sacrifices of women back in those days were portrayed really well.
The ending would have been better if Haolan left the palace & lived a quiet & happy life with Liu Buwie who truly loved her

Hao Lan created a monster when she spoiled her son to the core ever since his childhood!
This is based on true events in history. He was the crown prince and was raise to be strong and ruthless. That's why Qin became so powerful. A long line of strong and ruthless kings. Say what you want but the first emperor of China had magnificent achievements and has achieved immortality. Just take a look and what he built. The great wall still stands to this day.

There's nothing to be proud of in achieving an empire by being ruthless and malicious by killing to get what you want. That is no different from our era time today when thugs, gangs or mafias kill one another for power and fortune! To the people who said it was a crappy ending :
The drama is based off of historical events and not a romance story. The ending was just Hao Lan not forgiving her son, and after Hao lan passed away she was berried with zi Chu. And Li buwei was sent out to henan and died.
Do you know why Lu Buwei was demoted and sent away? What crime did he commit?
A Google User he didn’t really commit a crime, Hao lan’s son just didn’t like him because Li buwei had too much power and the people trusted Li buwei more than the ‘king’. And her son knew Li buwei likes his mother.

History isn't a happy ending most times. We had to know the whole story. I love it when stories are accurate, to many want to fabricate so it will match their agenda and not the truth. Beautiful, tragic and heartfelt production. I was hooked til the end and I'm watching with English subtitiles.

Loved this portrayal of Zhao Yi and Lu Buwei as smart, cunning ladder climbers. Those who want to see a charismatic depiction of her son (or their, as rumoured) King of Qin, I recommend The King's woman. I was very surprised by Zhang Bin Bin, he may be young but a very great actor
The way the King of Qin is portrayed here is so weird for me because I'm not used to him being reckless or....kinda stupid.

Should of been a second season. Telling the rest of history/story, what happened to the 2? Did they ever get together? I could of swore I saw one where he had her locked in a house begging, her showing her riches. Then he let her leave, it was raining. She cried, came back to him by choice and told him it was allways him.
@@stacymanning2393 no, in the end of the drama haolan lived in her palace and lu buwei died in exile. that is the official ending, though i heard that theres 2 endings and the ending where haolan is reunited with lu buwei got cancelled bc of protest from viewers.

I was hopping Haolan left with Lu Buwei and finally manage to have their ‘happy ending’ . I guess life happened. Fairytales are so rare.
I really love the period series, now in quarantine, it helped me a lot thanks guys.
As for Hao Lan and Lu Buwei's love story, at least this series brought them to us, emerging from centuries of History and we all ended up feeling sooo much hope and compassion for them..!! May their beautiful and courageous souls rest in peace, it sure has been a difficult and extraordinary life they went thru together. They now have been seen and held by millions.🙏✨

Can't believe written history 100%. Even events in the recent centuries are not accurately documented and taught. I believe it was a male historian/scribe that just wanted to smear HaoLan. Zhichu, HaoLan, LiBuwei were great influencers of their time. I'm so amazed and in awe of their courage and intelligence to be able to survive in those times.
I found this story to be incredible, especially what the women had to go through in those times. The actors Wu Jinyan, Jiang Zi Xin, Nie Yuan, Mao Zijun, Ying Yi Ren and Tong Meng Shi are absolutely amazing in their roles while Wu Jinyan, Jiang Zi Xin and Nie Yuan followed up their amazing roles in Story of Yanxi Palace. The only thing I hate about watching these shows is that I need to sit and watch it all so I can read the subtitles whereas with anything in English language I can be doing things around the house while listening to it. Now I've finished this I'm going to watch a different Chinese drama show.

it follows history so although it is heavily embroidered with romance and creaking knuckles, the history can't be changed.

Idk how i feel about that ending. It didnt make me emotional like chinese dramas usually do. The king just seemed so arrogant and immature. I thought it poorly represents qin shi huang. He was ruthless but also very smart

I'm not really satisfied with this ending. It's like something is missing. Maybe it wouldn't be like that if they haven't just narrated the deaths of Hao Lan and Lu Buwei but would've shown it.
And this damn eunuch , am I the only one who is angry that his wicked deeds weren't discovered and he didn't get a punishment. In almost every historical cdrama is a devious eunuch beside the king
This show is called Legend of Hao Lan. And who did we not see at the end? Hao Lan. It’s a 60+ episode show, it has to conclude with a retrospective of her whole life, maybe while she’s nearing death. What about Lu Buwei? Where did he end up? Did we completely forget the original group of people?
The drama is based on real historical events and records. Not supposed to be a romance novel.
Redcatrobe they narrated what happened to the two of them at the end. This is a drama based off of history not romance.
Even the villain is loyal. The servant was loyal to the princess consort (the girl that was obsessed with Yiren). But she saved him as a kid and he had one job. Watch over the prince to make him useless. He remained loyal to the deceased princess which is cool even if he gets away with it.
I guess I feel the same way....

In the end, Princess Ya became my favorite character. I loved her change after the face tattoo.

這個編劇編的真好。 同樣歷史，卻用不同的方式解說。 所以什麼才是歷史真象呢？ 這個導演也導的好。 演員們也都演的好。 我喜歡這個電視劇。 和我們以前知道的秦始皇及歷史大大不同。 但這個劇的說法，也言之有理。卻是另一種解釋。
这部剧比延禧的格局更大气，帝王的权谋之术远比嫔妃间的争斗深刻得多；而且吴谨言在这个剧中的演技明显比延禧成熟，最令人惊喜的是，整部剧的配乐非常有功力，很符合那个年代的气质，服饰和室内布景更是我所看过的古装剧中最具审美力的，高雅而不艳俗；唯一不足的是，成年嬴政和白将军这两位演员的演技有点用力过猛，还有，如果整部剧可以在异人病逝那集就结束，相信会有更多人喜欢这部剧。

I am glad the King was faithful till the end in his love for her albeit it’s not the way she wanted.
Finally, I love the clothes that were made so beautifully reflecting that era.

@@anaharo6587 Is that a close timeline to this one? I've seen it, but I can't recall the prime minister being of the Lyu family name. I know that Ruyi's Royal Love In The Palace is similar to The Story Of Yanxi Palace (the timelines kind of overlap with Hongli being the Emperor). The characters, or should I say actresses in all three series are too damn amazing at their jobs! I'm kinda fangirling a few of them without meaning to! Also, please could the actress that plays Li Haolan and Wei Yingluo be type cast to only play characters with a strong sense of justice and willfulness and only occur in imperial period dramas please! That would just be probably the best type of typecasting someone could get! I doubt I would feel too upset at receiving "you aren't the best at being devious, underhanded, and downright evil in your soul. I'm sorry you cannot play the part of [evil character]".
it's nice to watch in the order when it'd happend
if we put in the correct order it'll be:
1° Legend of Hao Lan (Quin dinasty - 265-230 BC) they didn't end up together
2° Royal feast (Ming Dynasty - 1368 to 1644) New lover played by Xu Kai, they get together
3° Story of Yanxi Palace (Qing dynasty - 1735 to 1796) both Lu Buwei and Zhu Zhanji(from Royal feast) fell in love with her, but the emperor won.
History... the one place that never has a happily ever after. The ending just wasn't satisfactory... so much could have been expanded so we can have closure on all the characters!!!

He didn't give it up for nothing. He gave it all up willingly for power and money. He wanted to be the most powerful man 2nd to the king. Hao Lan had a happier ending than her own mother and the former Princess of Zhao.
If it makes you feel better they did film an alternate ending where they were on a boat I think.

I loved the way he shoved that sword into him over and over again. Such noble cruelty, it is superior.
Not a fan of zheng'er arc because we all knew it was going to go downhill for haolan. Even when we saw him as a child you know that he will be inferior to his parents. He had the perfect role models but not the luck to have the time to properly learn from them. Either way, it was a good wrap up of the story.
Wonderful drama series and greats history for Chinese brave women. Love the actors all the cast especially Lao Han, the King Zeshu and Son

I recommend watching 'The King's Woman' after this. (Different storyline, but think of it as a sequel!). It is about the King of Qin as an adult, Li Haolan as an older woman, and an older Lyu Buwei. There are different actors, so you can compare and contrast. I must admit that the older version of Li Haolan could be this version's Mother or maternal Aunt!
The Kings Woman is superb a must-watch...
the only problem with the king's wife is that they insinuate that li buwei is the father of ying zheng which is historically a distortion of history created by the han dynasty.
But the representation of the king is superb

The things that people will do simply for power such as betraying their family and selling out their loved ones is a concept that history is very familiar with and this show did such a wonderful job of portraying the most disturbing and realistic happenings within royal palaces. Truly a work of art and pain. No one truly got a happy ending and this can mostly be boiled down to the desire for power and the willingness to forget one's humanity in order to obtain it

This drama was woth watching if only for the love story between Li Hao Lan and Lu Bu Wei, one of the most touching and fascinating of all dramas that I have watched.
The chemistry and interplay between them was riveting to watch and made me want to replay their scenes again and again (still doing it ^^).
I take comfort in knowing that the true ending was them both meeting outside the palace and travelling the world together, not worrying about politics or power anymore, just spending their last years together.
After all, it's not like there was an alternative ending, it's still very open and all we got was the official version of history, we don't see what really happens to them.
Going back to the characters, apart from Hao Lan and Lu Bu Wei, everyone did an amazing job and made me sometimes sympathize and sometimes hate.
Special shoutout to Princess Ya who made me truly feel for her and for the love story between her and her husband Prince Zixi.
And now I will have to finally watch Yanxi Palace and imagine it's the next life of Hao Lan and Lu Bu Wei!

剧中吕不韦的气度 不像是个被吓死自尽的人…这…结局草率的有点过的了赶脚…。还有一点 就是人如果活在算计中高位中就不要想当个单纯的人…因为只要人想 任何的举动都会让对方生疑而让自己死于天真会真心之下… 所以就是不要当好人
因为 本来剧中也没有自杀啊，和李皓镧重逢一起游历天下了。都说了史载。。。

吴谨言厉害在，她演一部剧，我就想看她和演对手戏的男主再来一部合作。。。对于她和聂远，俩人已经合作过两部，如果算上皓镧传真正拍的大结局（李皓镧离开王宫和吕不韦小舟重逢，之后游历六国），两人剧中世界两生两世都是End game，就差一世就完满了。吴谨言和聂远的演绎非常互补，各种反差萌。吴谨言和茅子俊也可以再安排一部。

After zichu died, I just skipped through most of the episodes. Haolan and zichu ended up on such bad terms. They are affectionate towards eachother but stubborn and heartless as well.
Haolan's pride was too strong that she would not be willing to remain calm and reconcile with him. But I guess Zichu still has trust issues and began assuming that haolan was doing bad deeds behind him. But despite all that, he still tried his best to forgive her and all she did was pushed him away when he sneaked into her room. She could have gave in but didn't! So that sparked his anger and sadness. She was too wilfill that she did not even took care of him when he was ill. But he is pretty heartless as well as how he wouldn't let her see him til his death for the last time. All I have to say is they are both very stubborn.
BUT what makes me upset most is haolan put zhichu in so much distress that she caused him to die and if she at least had a bit of sincerity in her he wouldn't be blind nor die early if she cared for him.
Another drama that makes you wonder why the storyline had to end this way.
I disagree. It was Zichun who put his kingdom first above everything else... Even Haolan. It was all his careful planning that had him fall sick... Besides he mastered such a scheme to make Haolan remember him for the rest of her life. He was ultimately cunning and self-serving... Kings are from out of this world after all. Haolan would have been better off marrying the prime minister from Zhou (her first engagement): her life would have been far more peaceful.
Great story all in all.

Then he takes another woman, so many lies, and manulipations. Some guy telling me its his right to have me, after acting like that. I'd say get out to.
@@stacymanning2393 i understand your point but I also see Zichu's points. His stepmother's boot was on his neck and he had to get her favour when he first came to Qin. So he had to do what she said aka marry Siluo( Her family member) and take in concubines.
He tried to get rid of them all after he became King but his mother made him keep Siluo. I'm not mad because he had no choice...
Zichu's planning did not make him sick, the sickness is the reason he had to start the plans. Zichu was always sickly, especially after he took that arrow to the chest for Haolan when they back in Zhao state. I did not like how he treated her in the end at all and I think he could have done a better job with his beloved wife... but I assume the thought of her going back to Lu Buwei was too much so he got desperate.. idk

He could of told her why he had to act that way to her, and her play along. Instead of tearing her heart out. And not talking to her in the end, was so heartbreaking including his will 4 her to destroy all his stuff. I just don't understand it.
When the king went to the queens bedroom she asked him what was going on with his health. He told her there's nothing a king can't handle. She said we are husband and wife she wanted to work together she cared but he rejected her and you know from lbw and everyone all she wanted was honesty. Being honest shows respect and she valued and wanted that

比起延禧攻略，吴谨言演技真的有了质的飞跃！延禧里最后傅恒死讯来的时候，璎珞的演技真的……。在这里亲生儿子要杀自己时，皓镧眼神里真的有一种失望和绝望的感觉。我是感觉到她演技提升了不少，尤其是秦王还有嫪毐的衬托下😂当然我们的大猪蹄子还是一如既往的稳。白仲演技也可圈可点，明玉小天使也稳住了。虽然这部剧真的烂尾了……但我还是感觉追了一个月，也没亏。皓镧传，再见。
