    Thanks. I especially appreciated the of "Allowance" because I remember large seams in clothes made by out dressmaker but not in bought clothes.
    I also appreciated the request about sub titles which normally annoy me but I now realise the benefit to others not blessed with normal hearing.
    Grateful Thanks

    Hi Kim, great information today, thank you for sharing, I use to wonder how comes after taking proper measurements some garments especially the non stretch ones sometimes wasn’t comfortable then I figured it out, we need wearing ease , for example when some of us sit, our stomach expands, our hips and thighs so if no ease is included and the garment is finished to exact measurements, if the garment has no stretch it is going to be too tight and uncomfortable, lots of love Kim , thanks for sharing

    Loved the vid. Great information that makes sense. Another topic for a vid, might be how to use stretchy fabrics (knits, denim with spandex, or fabrics with lycra) in a home made pattern or a pattern copied from an already existing garment that you love. How do you calculate stretch in fabrics with stretch from right to left and top to bottom of a yard of material. Kept up the great work. Enjoy your vids.

    Funny enough I call this “thickness allowance” 🤣🤣🤣 and I usually add more room around my hips and now my bust. Didn’t know this was the official term lol

    • @KimDave
      @KimDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a first, thickness allowance. It does make sense though, adding some extra around these areas is definitely a good idea!

    I've been making my life hard by subtracting 5% or 10% from my measurements when doing negative ease. And I don't do it at the neckline. I probably should, but I usually have some kind of facing in the neckband that is less stretchy.
    I'm glad you talked about this though.

    Amazing insight. ❤️❤️ I would love to ask though if we should work with exact body measurements for non-stretch fabrics. From experience, I’ve had to add like 1 inch more to create room for my hips when I sit but this usually doesn’t give it that fitted look in pictures when standing or moving. Any tips?

    1.A lot of ready- to- wear garments have no idea what 'allowance' is,which drives Alterationists nuts! 2.On point,informative video. 3.New favorite word:"Snatcheroo!"

      Very true. Mass produced clothing usually don’t have ‘allowance’ added. Glad you enjoyed this video 😄

    Hey Kim, great video, I have been looking up this topic and most suggest putting about 2-3 inch ease in the bust for bodice blocks that have a sleeve and about 1-2 inch in the waist, however I have not found the exact measurements or recommendations for sleeveless bodices that need to be tight on the chest. Would you suggest making a bodice block to the exact measurements in that case for a corset or bodice that is fitted, so there is no gapping?

    Firstly - Love your look 🥰 . I like your advice about starting with removing 1/2” for negative ease. It’s still something I’m trying to understand for stretchy garments. I made a huge mistake in this regard and reduced the pattern size by too much and fashion fabric turned out to be a stretch woven and not a true stretch as the toile I had made. So the reduced pattern worked for the stretch toile but it wasn’t in the same fabric as the fashion fabric. I was never so embarrassed about my sewing. So if you have any pointers about this area, I’d love that.

      Oh dear. I understand what you mean, must have been so annoying.
      The secret is to make your sample of prototype with a fabric as similar as possible to avoid incidents like these.
      Definitely second the notion of starting with half inch negative ease and remove any desired excess after fitting

    So when they say 1 inch or 1/2 inch ease, is this added to the entire circumference ie divided by 4 and added to the quarter pattern? This always confuses me.

    • @KimDave
      @KimDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually add half an inch along the side seam of each panel necessary, and that works for me

    Thanks so much for the tip ma, so helpful. But I have a question.
    Does sewing allowance mean the same thing as ease???

    • @KimDave
      @KimDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re welcome
      Sewing allowance is actually different from ease. The sewing allowance is the measurement that allows you to join the panels together while ease is additional measurements to allow for comfortable wear

    • @biscuit7910
      @biscuit7910 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First let me say I really enjoyed this video and learned from it. Keep them coming.
      Sewing allowance is actually talking about seam allowance. The amount of fabric in the seam. For quilting usually 1/4 inch. For garments usually 5/8 inch, although I've seen in last couple years sometimes they use 1/2 inch.
      Ease is the amount of extra fabric added to your bust measurement, waist, arms , or crotch measurement to allow you to sit down or to move your arms up, down or across your chest. Hope this helps.

    Hi Kim! I have a question for you! Generally speaking, if i want to develop a pattern with added ease compared to my basic block, would this always translate into additional space along the *horizontal* axis? As in the side seam moves outwards, side waist point moves outwards, etc? Are there any cases where ease is incorporated along the vertical axis -- except for the sleeve and armhole of course!

    • @KimDave
      @KimDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do know that with stretch fabrics, you will need to add some allowance along the hemline. As the fabric stretches sideways, some measurements might be lost
