The journey of the name starting with "Andreas" is weird and interesting. Andreas became Andrea in italian. But Andrea is the german female version of Andreas.
As a native greek speaker having been taught ancient greek for twelve years, I would translate Andrew as "manly" and not "man" as the name comes from the accousative form of the word ἀνήρ(anēr). The "strong" meaning is just BS.
You forgot to take into consideration the word "ανδρεία" (andreia), meaning bravery, prowess. Since it was used to define a person's bravery during war, which were fought almost exclusively by men, it can be connected, at least in theory, with the concept of male strength or "manliness".
@@atg01340 It is true, I failed to consider the meaning of ανδρεία, but to be fair, it is also derives from the accousative form of "anēr" and has nothing to do "dynamis" (δύναμις) or "ischys" (ἰσχύς). As someone can be physically strong but a coward at the same time, I stand by my opinion that Patrick's sources pulled the meaning "strong" for Andrew out of their butts.
I was surprised when you mentioned "Drew" as a possible short version of that name, since it made me think of Drew Barrymore. Turns out she got this name in honor of her grand grandmother Georgiana Drew.
2:16 St Patrick has been the patron saint of both parts of Ireland for at least a century and a half. Both the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of Ireland (Anglican Communion in Ireland) recognise him as such. I'm not positive about the Presbyterian Church in Ireland but I would assume so. In the case of St Patrick *It's not a matter of countries but one of churches and/or of religious/social traditions.*
To me being a man is pretty much the same as being a lady: be honest, fair, accept your own shortcomings as you accept others and above all, don't be smug about that. I don't live up to that, but I try to remember.
I’m an Andrew, and I’m a big ol’ homosexual who majored in French and studied poetry in grad school. I have a theory that straight Andrews, in the US at least, tend to go by a nickname version. Every Andrew I know under the age of 50 or so is gay or bi, but every Drew or Andy I know is straight.
Got nothing to do with Andrew, but your You-Know-Who bit reminded me of the Dutch version: Marten Asmodom Vilijn -> Mijn naam is Voldemort (My name is Voldemort), with 'Vilijn' being a misspelling of 'vilein', meaning 'bad'/'mean'/'low'/'evil' (probably sharing etymologic roots with 'villain' and 'vile')
I'll concede that by definition Andrew is the manliest, but by life experience and ability to fight. I must submit the name of a guy I know named "Bobby Sue", he learned how to handle a multiple opponent surprise intro, before he could ride a bike.
I got named after Toy Story. The jokes used to bug me in High School but I don’t really care anymore, at 24 I see hardly any Andys in my age range compared to Andrews or Drews. I’m assuming the Toy Story connotation drove most of the Andys to change it up once they got a little older
Hello! An Andrew that goes by Drew, I live in the US and in every school, I’ve shared at least 3 classes with another Andrew so I just took up the name Drew, after years of using it, I’ve came not only more comfortable with Drew, but now I use it more than my actual legal name of Andrew. Really cool to learn where my name came from and what it means in European origins, I don’t do anything really considered manly lmao I draw, create things in sandbox games and enjoy history and writing, I suppose my job has me lifting heavy boxes and hauling heavy carts so, perhaps that counts lol
Had a pretty similar experience lol. I tried dumping Andy and just going by Andrew in Middle School, then in High school I had 4 other Andrews in my class. I went back to Andy and at 24 I’m totally fine with it. I get a lot of Toy Story jokes (I was named after the character so I can’t be too mad I guess) but other than that I don’t see too many Andys my age which is nice. A hell of a lot of Andrew’s though
Being a "man" is to stand up for what is right, regardless of outside pressures, fragile ego or insecureties. Nothing to do with a Name ... just CHARACTER.
I wish there was a group of Andrew's who could communicate their masculinity through actions. Also Andy's are not her same as Andre's, Andrew's & Drew's.
Yes, Both individuals that contribute to the mythos of St. Patrick we're predominantly based in Ulster, Ava so St. Patrick is Island wide the Patron Saint.
No, it is not ... but then, it's relative to any one individual's taste & perception. Every Andrew I ever knew of did not act "manly" at all. Funny stuff!

To be honest Andrew sounds so gayish. Andrei - Russian form of this name is much more brutal.
I really like my name. André means man from greek and Líbero, from italian means free, so I am a free man
Are you not in prison right?
Please get yourself a third name, Freeman
FREEDOM!!!
@@miliba That would be lovely
I'd rather be a busy man than a free man

Which is how you can have a man named Andrea Bocelli, but a woman named Andrea Mitchell!

Andrew is the English form of the Greek name Andreas meaning “man”.
Being a Man means Protecting and Providing for those you love
You sound like Vin Diesel
That just sounds like being a human in general
My name is Andrew and the manliest thing I do is talking to people who are going through some tough mental times and make them feel less stressed

Hey! I’m a Andrew that has secondarily gone by Drew for as long as I can remember lol
Changing my name to "Mr. Andrew 'Mandrew' Andrewmanson"
My grandfather’s name was Andrew. He worked in the brass works back in the day and was strong but gentle.

Andrea: the feminine version of Andrew.
"Karl" (Carl/Carlos/Kalle etc.) also means "man". It comes from the norse word for man, which is karl.
Maybe those patrions you lost were Russian and no longer have access to world banks... Or in the rest of the world where costs are rising like crazy.

Right before you explained the meaning of the name, I realised the andre in *andre* w.
In Italian its translation "Andrea" is used for both males and females. Mostly males though.
Andrew Roll call
Butch, Lance, Ace, Blaze, sounds like Blade, Lazer, and Blazer from the Dodgeball movie.
Hey Patrick. Did you forgot about the charming Prince Andrew?
The Council of Anthony's has approved Andrews application to the Council. No Andy's need Apply.
As someone with a very indian-sounding name, i usually use this name when the game's setting is western / medieval europe
