- We decide to take the Interceptor offroad with an FJ Cruiser to see what the truck can do. We took it into an environment what you would typically see if you went camping. It's not trail driving but you're off the beaten path enough where ground clearance, tires and traction devices like a locker (Eaton G80 in this case) will help you get through the terrain.

I was Quality Control for DOD my job was testing military vehicles lockers winches and so on, if your willing to drive a vehicle like a mad man it will get through more shit than you will give it credit for, trust me on this one.

Oh yeah it was a whole clipboard full of boxes to check and comments to write in. and there was an off road test area with sand washes mud holes to really torture a vehicle to its limits, best job you could ask for., I retired.

I have a G80 on a 3/4 ton 4wd Suburban. 4WD tends to be for rutty forest roads where a wheel might be off the ground, on wet grass to keep from tearing it up and even backing out of a steep driveway where the weight isn't over the drive wheels.

I've got a lifted 4x2 on 31s with LSD. It tows great and I've gotten out of some tough terrain in it. Sometimes it's easier to drive in reverse to get up a mud incline.

Not bad. The 2WD locker is pretty good. I am buying a 2WD locker just for regular use and an occasional campground area towing. The locker seems quite capable for that. Naturally an all out comparison of 2WD to 4WD is irrelevant- 4WD wins offroad but still, the capability of the locker 2WD is impressive. Another 2016 video Lifted 2WD tacoma in FL really shows off the 2wd capabilities as well.
rodneylw10 Ya that's all I need it for. Also keep in mind the Silverado has a suspension setup more for payload so it has a little harder time putting the power down.
Where I can buy a locker and my question is if can carry heavy loads in the truck with the locker installed?

Look into an Eaton Trutrac. It's more a of a limited slip but it will do exactly what you want and should have smooth operation on the street. Some locker options might be great off road but then you drive it daily and it's noisy or starts to chew up your tires. I'm a big fan of Eaton products in general.
Also what kind of tires are you running? That's going to make a huge difference as well.

Why a body lift vs blocks in the rear and keys on the torsion bars? Is you truck torsion bars or coil springs in the front?

I'm surprised you can even find a 2wd truck in Canada. They don't sell them new in Alaska.
L7057B7 11F19 There's a few in my area. I was looking for a 4X4 at the time but they were all beat up. This truck was so mint and a good price I couldn't pass it up. And that was 8 years ago.
They still sell them more in the cities though I got a 2012 GMC 2wd with chains on and posi it goes a long way now got a 2015 jeep jk way better

I have a Ford Ranger here in Ontario 🇨🇦. I really wanted the compact pickup for better fuel economy and cheaper insurance (compared to a car in my city). You’d be hard pressed to find a 4WD Ranger or Tacoma with no rust, never mind afford one. Trucks are getting expensive, especially the old and reliable on the used market.
Edit: I mean an older Tacoma or Ranger. Like 10+ years old. My Ranger is a ‘00

Most off-roaders do not realize the huge difference between real studded winter tires and common off-road tires in the winter, The Champiros shown here are almost illegally (here in Finland) bad winter tires, but even they are vastly superior to any normal off-road tires. Michelins or Nokians are again like from a different planet compared to Champiros. The video really does not show how difficult some of the sections have been.
Some off-roaders think that mud tires are ok for the winter, but they may even pay that error with their lives, as even a good summer tire is better on an icy road than a mud tire. Studs help a bit, and custom made siping helps a lot. Still a car with even bad avd outperforms a real 4x4 if the car has , say, studded Nokians and the truck has mud terrains, on ice, that is.

I had this truck. The RC 3” lift was super simple and easy. With the 31” tires it came taller than a 4x4. Open rear end no 4wd. When airing down and running ko2’s truck did well. I just picked up a 2wd Colorado 2wd with a g80 rear end and its impressive.
I agree the G80 makes a 2WD drive truck quite capable. I would still drive with caution when it's wet or there a lot of snow on the terrain though.
I’m not even looking to off-road I just have a little 2wd s10 with the g80 and wanted to see if I would be okay towing a little boat of the ramp does happen to be slick
You'll want to put some weight in the back to help at the ramp.
It's sad how few 2wd trucks don't have a locker or limited slip diff. They just make sense. My 05 frontier is 4wd and had a rear locker.
I agree it should be standard. GM did put the Eaton G80 in a lot of 2WD trucks which made it decently capable as you can see in the video.

Respect for your effort - and the sensible view points! I'm designing a self build to go You Kay to Tibet via Russia and Mongolia. Having raced dirt back in the day and keen to have an MPG return of 27 I'm seriously looking at the 2WD + Locker option. (plus I can run less agressive, low drag front tyres -) -
Graham Hobbs The only down side to a "true locker" is stability on pavement in the rain at highway speeds can be compromised. It is impressive what a 2WD truck can do with a good traction device and good tires.
I have a ford ranger.. and i'm more concerned with not losing control in normal driving on a highway with snow or rain... any thoughts. I don't hot dog it... I'm light on the throttle ... but is that enough. the locker seems a great idea for better mpg and lower maintenance than four wheel drive. I just don't want to get killed taking advantage of it.
Joseph DuPont This locker only engages at low speed. You might also want to look into limited slip options. Best thing to do is talk to your local drivetrain shop and tell them how you use your vehicle.
A locker or limited slip can get you into trouble on the highway if you aren't careful. I'd stick with what you got which most likely is an open differential on the highway is all you really need....a good set of tires for the conditions you'll be encountering is far more important and needed than a locker or limited slip.

Heck that's a normal back country road in the winter around Idaho...well actually they're worse here in the winter in many locations to downright impassible regardless of what vehicle you got. Its fun to have to go out on recovery calls on those roads though and see the city kids out there with mommy and daddy's fancy crossover car with street tires buried to the doors.

Did a 1992 gmc sierra c1500 2wd with the 4.3 and the auto 700r4 come with a g80? the rpo code is gu6 means 3.42 but when i did a vin decode it showed a 3.08?
What's the most weight you've put in the back? I can't find info on how much weight would be optimum, what do you think? Neat video btw

Brian Dean Hauling. I try to put 200ish in the back for winter.
In my experience w/2wd truck for on road winter use, approx. 40% of payload capacity yeilds the most traction w/o degrading stopping too much
Depends...if you got a heavy V8 or diesel engine up front it'll take 200-400lbs of weight in the bed to help with snow/ice traction making your pickup bed totally useless. The heavier the engine the more weight you'll need in the bed to compensate for that weight over the front non-powered axle in a 4x2 pickup.
The Toyota has more weight over the rear tires. I'm very happy with the G 80 in my Chevy's!!
I just switched to a Yukon Gear clutch based setup. I have yet to test it offroad , but the on street traction especially in the rain is much better because it's always engaged. Also cornering and braking seems to be better because of how it distributes power with the new unit.
At 5:50 what was the reason to apply the brakes finishing the climb, was the truck getting ahead of itself?
Probably because I had to build momentum and it was getting a bit bouncy so I wanted to slow it down.

AnthonyJ350 I bet you most of these people aren't true 4x4 people. They just like the idea of it. I personally have always liked rwd trucks for work and their ride. Easier to throw stuff in the back and all that.
I don't spend a lot of time 4x4ing anymore just up Backroads and forest service roads. So I am Thi king of getting a rwd Ranger and dropping an Eaton Truetrac in it. Gives me a little bit more usability for my highway vehicle.
Steven Stringer Ya the biggest reason I drive a RWD truck is they don't make body on frame cars anymore lol. I actually just put a Yukon Gear Duragrip (clutch type LSD) in the truck based on my drivetrain shop's recommendation. I plan to test it some, but so far much better characteristics in the rain compared to the G80. I wanted a Trutrac but they recommended this one. Still breaking it in but I'll make a few videos on this one for you guys.

The chevy Traction Control is On or Off?
The Chevy doesn't have traction control.
You have to turn traction control off.
If that fj has ATRAC than its almost like a locker. Unless he turns off all traction control including ATRAC than that would be true open diff 4x4
vadim nesen a trac is like traction. Control it’s not the same as a locking diff
ATRAC isn't a locker...it applies brakes to spinning wheels using the ABS system's sensors...all it does is wear out your brake pads it is in no way even close to a limited slip or a locker, and isn't even a close substitute....but for 99% of people that buy trucks and suv's they will never do anything more than hitting a curb at the mall so today's vehicles are more equipped for highway travel which is why you don't see the limited slip or locker option being ordered in most vehicles...the ones that do actually go offroad typically order the stock vehicle because they know they'll be adding an aftermarket limited slip or locker anyways.
Doesn't that just use the brake on the wheel that's slipping? I would prefer a LSD of some sort or a locker if it's a 4X4 used a lot off road.
What's the ground clearance on that truck, as pictured?
I thought 2WD Silverado 1500s were 8.1 or 8.2"s; so about 6/10ths of an inch lower than a comparable 4wd Chevy.

I have a manual 2wd v6 f150 do you think putting a locker on it would be a problem seeing that it's a v6 on a full size truck
Alex Bevington I don't see a problem with having a V6. Since you have a 5 speed maybe look into a 3.73 rear gear ratio so you can generate more torque. You will sacrifice some highway mileage though if you care.

It'll help a little of course, but in mud and snow with a 2WD throwing chains on will get you through a lot of shit that even 4x4's have a hard time with.
In gm the only rearend I'll have is the g80 great rearend

How much you pay for G80 rear diff locker for parts + labor?
It came with the truck from factory. I would do an Eaton True Trac or Yukon Gear Duragrip
what would you recommend for a 93 f150? I don't know the ratio or anything just want somewhere to start
3.73 is a good place to start. I don't know what your 5th gear ratio is so I don't know where you will be RPM wise on the highway. For all we know your truck might have an axle ratio like that already. I'd take the VIN call your local Ford dealership, and if they're cool they can tell you what gear ratio was installed.
Look into Eaton's TruTrac differential for your traction device. Should give good power transfer and smooth operation. I'd go full mechanical vs a clutch style LSD since you want to take your truck more off road.

Honestly I don’t see how you have a 2” lift on it with the tires about hitting the fender. I put a 3” on mine with 33s and I have way more clearance than that in the front. I also agree with the other dude, that is by far no comparison. You should have had two of the same trucks
The lift will be better explained in this video. You're right it's not fair, I just don't have a ton of access to a lot of vehicles and drivers at any given point in time, just work with what I got, so I ask people to use their imagination a little bit.

G80's There ok when they're newer. I wouldn't expect it to Last for the life of the vehicle though. At higher speeds they are actually un locked. I've owned 2 vehicles that had them and they both broke. The teeth wore off the shaft and it made a chattering chirping noise. If I was gonna buy a locking differential I'd buy a torsen like the Detroit True Track. No clutches to wear out and no little teeth to break off the shaft and they last the life of the vehicle. I think GM intended these for maybe pulling a boat up a wet boat ramp not serious off roading.
The G80 is pretty good for stock equipment, but like you said not super durable. I've switched up to a Yukon Duragrip since.

AnthonyJ350 I'm considering doing an exhaust cutout on my 02. I really like how quiet the factory exhaust is during the week but on the weekends I would like to have it loud.
That's one way to do it. I ran my truck just out of y-pipe. Didn't sound that good, sounded like a boat lol. I think you need a small muffler if you do that to help smooth out the exhaust note.

That's how GM trunks are built. They're more setup for the highway than they are to go offroad. And more customers keep their trucks on pavement 90% of the time. That's why offroad product companies that make lifts and levelling kits will stay in business for a long time.

I agree, but this is what I own so we're going to run it. The point of the video is to show a vehicle like this still has the capability to get you to areas that maybe have unmaintained roads. I mainly use this truck to go to work and haul 4X8 sheets of plywood and MDF and tow occasionally. This which an FJ isn't really good at. 80/20 rule, 80 percent daily/ haul awkward items, 20 percent go somewhere to camp.

@lAcid Rainl It's a car definitely tough enough and a lot of them have a LSD, it's just a question on some sections is it high enough off the ground.

I wouldn't do that with the fj, gonna roast the rear end because no proper locker setup. The gear box will heat up and get fried.
I think the trick is to not apply so much throttle when you encounter we slip and you can apply the parking brake a little to help distribute torque more evenly since it's an open diff.

In first the ratio is 3.90:1 is that better than a 3.73 ratio
Alex Bevington That will get affected by whatever gear ratio is in the axle. You're changing almost everything but the axle shafts at that point.

The ratio you need to be concerned about is the one in the axle.
Better for towing, but your fuel economy diminishes a little bit. The lower the number the better your fuel economy, the higher the number the better your towing capability will be but your fuel economy of course suffers.
Waste of time. Neither truck was really tested close enough to it's limits to see how they compared in overall traction. One would assume the 4WD would have an advantage, but dunno
Oh the FJ Cruiser would smoke the Chevy. I think the Chevy for a 2WD was pushed as far as you'd want to take it, given the ground clearance of the truck and all the weight in the front.

David Martin Doesn't the Colorado also come with the G80? Bit you're saying the S10 rwd open diff with no weight performs better than your traditional 4x4? I find that a little hard to believe. Can you elaborate more? I'm interested.
no my colorado is a 2004 z85 and gets stuck on wet grass so isnt that shit suppose to not get stuck lol

David Martin Ya manual is good for that extra control. I know my truck would be useless in a lot of situations without the locker. Especially on days when it's icy.
maybe my gpas 3.5 had it that would go anywhere but idk if my 2.8 has it it sucks compared to the 3.5
Been watching for years. Very surprised you havent blown up that G80 yet. As a 2006 2wd owner aswell, that was one of the first things I got rid of.
Chris Conway Not all of them blow up. Maybe the T/A different cover helps avoid any deflection and I think whom ever put this one in the tolerances are tighter cause you can hear it squeal in a parking lot. These things have been equipped in GM trucks for decades.
Yeah, they do work but the failures are well documented for a reason. The design just isn't sustainable for long term use. Many many soccer moms have blown the things up by just hitting a patch of ice wrong. Hell, i never beat mine in anyway and it started ratcheting like crazy in reverse. I figured it was time for it to go. Cause when they blow, they usually take out the ring and pinion and bearings with it
Oh I agree it's not bullet proof. But if I can drive the truck for 8 years on it and run it for a bit longer, I save a bunch of money while still having a functional rig. I won't replace it until the operation makes some weird noise. Then I'll switch to a TruTrac.
True trac is what i went with. That along with ditching the horrible 3.23 gears in favor of 4.30s made one hell of a different truck

Typical Vancouver 4x4 pozer crap. Richmond, south Fraser River...I've driven a Honda Accord through that stuff. No risk of getting stuck but far more from cutting a tire on discarded pallets and sofas.
If you want to be a 4x4 TH-cam Hero, spend a day exploring either east or west of Harrison Lake and you'll realize there are few places 4x2 beats 4x4...if you want to use those trucks the way they were meant to be used.
Or try this....put 1,200 pounds of firewood in the back of that pickup and you'd be amazed at what it can cut through.
st1300 I never said a 2WD truck beats 4WD. I'm just saying RWD truck with a locker can get you through basic stuff. I'm not a 4X4 channel, if you looked at my content you would see that. Also your accord might get through there but I know your going to beat up the under carriage because of clearance issues. If you want to scrutinize my truck you can do it in person at my shop and see what I'm about, since you live in my area. I try to help people not put them down or act like I'm better than people like how you're acting. Good way to start the new year.

Thanks for your feedback. I said this was mild. This is something you would encounter going to a camp site. Never said it was super challenging. The only problem your Miata would have it ground clearance. If you live in BC would love to see what your car can do.
Drivetrain aside, big trucks are terrible off road. Big engine, the power and weight high up front, all wanting to push from the opposite end. The rear wants to trade places with the front each time you accelerate. Locking it in, (Diff or 4x4), shifting weight, moderate acceleration, helps correct this.

Haha this is funny. You shouldn't give off roading advice. You definitely didn't lift your truck right (if at all). Next time you do an "offroading" video, you should probably find some place more rugged than this. Honestly my driveway is more of a challenge. I think any front wheel drive car could have made it through what was on this video lmao.
I'm sure a FWD car could go through this. It would also bottom out and scrape a bunch. We're showing realistic terrain that you probably encounter going to a camp site.
