I also have the whisper lite international/universal and same problem and did not know or think about an alternative lighting method. I did get a bit of improvement however using msr so called super fuel that is claimed to be their cleanest fuel but cost restrictive. I like your idea better and will give that a go. Thanks for watching. The whisper lite (that's a very loud whisper) gets more use now that I don't have to be so cautious about getting soot everywhere.
Have you tried using any kind of wicking material (e.g. carbon felt) in the priming pan for alcohol in cold conditions? Getting alcohol to light (a remain lit) in the cold can be irksome without a wick.
+M00nsplitter There is a wick in the pan already (it looks like fiberglass). It was around 35 degrees F when I filmed this, so not too cold. Placing the wind screen would help too, but not good for videos. Thanks for watching.
@@PaCampingDad yes sir all tubing where fuel is turned from liquids to the vapors is generally called the vaporizer tube from Camping cooker to a field catering No.2 Burner I suspect that it will be the same on a flame thrower although I don't know for sure about that one.

I have heard the alcohol method mentioned a few time. Good idea! I have the Universal and may stick with the canisters most the time to keep it clean.
