I cut two batches of cuttings this year - one in the middle of the stem and the other just under the nodes. Both rooted equally well. There were just air pockets where my potatoes were supposed to be. Happy mice. At least I got the greens.

What types of edible greens may you grow during the winter season when not propagating something else? Up this way there was a first frost of the season very close by this morning. Hi Bob! It's easy to fill up this small space. I sometimes put strawberry runner in the cloning device to root, it works really well! Cabbage works well too. As for the garden in winter I usually like growing cilantro, bok choi, the purple kind preferred, and arugula. :) What state are you in, it's getting cold so fast for you.
@@wendiland I am up here towards the southwestern parts of SD. But tho there was frost weather the last couple of mornings, the garden space is still producing. Almost chutney time with some green tomatoes too!

Is there a chart somewhere on different types of sweet potatoes and their leaves? And do they cross pollinate? I have a few varieties in the garden and you didn’t have some of them. So there must be millions of them
I would love to gather a chart at some point. There are A LOT of varieties...there's more each year. We often grow them from cuttings so cross pollination is not a concern. Although I have seen tubers that morphed into something different.
I love your channel Wendi, just found it ! I'm a fairly new gardener zone 10a, I have 4 raised beds and 2 green stalks this year, hope it goes well lol. I'm crazy about sweet potatoes! hope I get a good harvest of the white variety I planted. I want to try all kinds. Glad to know I can keep growing in my zone, even if the cold slows it down. Advice on fertilizing them ?

Hi Wendi, really enjoy your videos. I've had great success propagating with sphagnum moss, very easy!! But the only variety I've tried is just the line green ornamental. I can tell you the ornamental tubers are like a radish color or pinkish color. My produced a huge tuber that a lot of people in a Facebook group flipped out over. But they said I couldn't eat it because its not meant to be consumed. I love the dark burgundy color, going to have to get some

I'm paying up to 5€/kg for good organic ones here in Germany. Now I really want to try sprouting one, for next summer, and grow them in a pot. How are you harvesting those in a pot? Can you pull out the tuber while keeping the plant alive, or are you replacing the plant with its cuttings?

Please help me??? I'm in Virginia zone 7a. My last frost date is April 10th. I just received my 4 varieties of sweet potato slips. But of course it is winter here. I invested a lot of money for these slips that have leaves and roots already. What is the best way to keep them alive and growing indoors till after my last frost???
Oh good to know! I am in zone 8 and mine die in winter unless I protect them or bring cuttings or tubers inside. I have several different varieties, including a purple w/ white skin, that are quite lovely and taste wonderful.
Hard to guess what happened since I can't see. They do need soil to stay moist. Before the plant establishes, it's safer to keep it in bright shade. Hope you give it a try again sometime. Good luck!
I've had luck by letting the slips develop strong roots in water, then take the rooted slips from water and putting them in Solo cups for 2 to 4 weeks rather than right in the ground, an extra step but worked for me. You get really strong established roots in soil and Transplant the whole thing.

Plant it in soil, put in bright space inside or under grow light until last frost has past. Good luck!

My slips never grow fully. The leaves grow for a while and then they start drying out one by one. It makes me sad
