Lots of good information, I have a node that is always on and connected to the Internet but no connections in or out full time, I have two other nodes that I think right now one is going to go in the comm box I'm building and not sure about the other one yet. I would love to see information about getting services going on each node
Thanks @NickGavin we are working on some follow on content for getting services up and running on nodes. In fact we just did a field exercise where we used MESH nodes to pipe video around so we will be talking about that on an upcoming show in the coming weeks.
Question, are all nodes stationary? Or can I pack up gear, hike somewhere, setup said gear, and connect to other AREDN nodes?
Node can be moved to new locations. The trick with this is you need to establish a new line of sight fix on a node already on the mesh if you want to connect to the larger mesh. If you are going to create your own island chain of nodes then you just need line of sight between nodes. I've used this several times and simply had one node connect via a tunnel to a distant node to bridge the networks. very flexible.

We are planning to do an entire show on establishing the line of site microwave links. This show was mean to be more foundational to help people get started. Thanks for learning with us!
I’m concerned that AREDN may be a misnomer. It appears that it is extremely dependent on having the internet to operate or at least manage the connections. I may be wrong, as I often am, but in an emergency wouldn’t the internet infrastructure be disabled fairly soon? If that is the case, are we building something that may be useless?
Great question, AREDN does not require the internet at all. It uses the same TCP/IP protocols as the internet but it is a complete standalone network. In fact at a recent event we used AREDN to move video data around but didn’t have an internet connection at all. The nodes once set correctly auto detect each other and begin talking and running the services that each is offering.
