An old saying what was once can be again when it comes time let's hope the spirit that was shown in this movie would actually be spread and spent if we ever need it again
Great post, I'd never seen this before! People today have no idea how much the war dominated everything. There was almost nothing in popular culture that didn't involve the war.
My American German dad who was a little boy back then told me that Americans can out produce any country around the world. Yes Nazis had the best tanks, ships, fire power, and planes in the early years of the war but America later in the war surpassed Germany military ingenuity. He told me if the Japanese and the Germany sank a US Navy ship we had 10 ships being built to replace the one that got destroyed.
Originally released in August 1942- exactly eight months after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Probably the "best" effort Terry and his staff created that year....
Cartoons, movies, posters; propaganda was everywhere, according to my dad. People were really encouraged to buy war bonds. When he was called to active duty in the Air Force, he had savings bonds deducted from his pay, all the way until retirement, at least. He said that a lot of the rationing in the US wasn't needed because of a lack of supply; it was to put people in a frame of mind to do whatever they could for the war effort. It was also a sort of show of solidarity to the Brits, who did have shortages. It wasn't only the armed forces who were at war; everybody in the country was expected to do their part. If someone was thought to be slacking, they were admonished for it.
This is really sad in a way, where everyone needs to contribute for war which is fought for peace, while people are expected to work to contribute ( pay ) for peace...
This was the USA I wish would come back someday. We weren't Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, men and women, homosexuals and heterosexuals, etc. We are all Americans, all working together for one cause. Will we ever see that kind of unity in this country again?
America was probably more divided during the Great Depression than it is today. The divisions went on hold during several years of war and then as a result of the massive economic growth that came as a result of an export boom that itself resulted from the economies of the rest of the world power being destroyed in the war. And I'm sure black people and women would love to go back to the 40's and 50's. Nostalgia is like that--- longing for a past that never existed.
I hope we do. We must get rid of the socialists first though, and stop dumbing down the new generations. Also get rid of social media and smart phones.
I hope that you are not relying on a massive global conflict to achieve such unity, because that is what it took back then. Perhaps a few internal tensions aren't so bad after all if they are the worst things you have to worry about.
5:48 i dont know why thats so funny, maybe it's that bird's voice, or the historical context of it, or just that japenese beetles are a real gardening problem.
the old farmer's trick leaving the lights on late to squeeze more egg production out of the hens. leave the lights on late to make the hens think it's daylight and not roosting time. ( roosting time is dark and all birds sleep then. no egg laying happens when their asleep )
Note the 2 beavers at 1:58. It's quite obvious that Paul Terry had said "Put two beavers in...if one beaver is funny, two beavers will be twice as funny!"

I love the part with the eggs.during the war they coated eggs with sodium asilcate (liquid glass). Kept them fresh for months.
The studio's first Oscar-nominated cartoon.

It was either that or let Hilter and Tojo win. That would not have been a good thing.
got that tune going thru my mind and and singing it to myself and my 3 parrots. soon they'll be singing it.

I enjoyed this video even though I'm Japanese. I'm happy to live in 21st century. Peace is a treasure.
I prefer bugs bunny and tom&jerry, though lol.
IMportant patriotism! V meaning Victory!
This was amazing. I wonder if War could be 'Sold' to America these days. I like what our Japanese friend said: "Peace Is A Treasure".

This is beautifully done cartoon high art!

I agree with you. It was a different time....

Not too good on the civil rights back then.....unless you were white.

Everyone was doing their bit for defense then in this country's final truly patriotic war.
you won't see that today unfortunately
We was all working together against the Nazis, Japanese and we won.
Haha
We're stepping up production by Uncle Sam's instruction.

I know... they really do some damage with those tiny swords.
I loved the forced labor camp for egg production. The place even looked kinda creepy.

You should have inserted the Viacom V of doom at the end! That would have gone well with the theme of the cartoon!
*VICTORIA!!!!!!!!*

Did you see the "Termites" work? classy.
0:38- TYPICAL 'SAPPY' TERRYTOONS NARRATOR: "One beautiful morning, in the year nineteen-hundred and forty-one, all was at peace. UNTIL....."
You're out of your flipping gourd. Went thru that point several times & No Such Thing.
until.... what? them sneaky bastards bombed us?
At Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, they DID.
Que lindas todo Hera sano.
This kind of cartoon today could motivate more people to be carbon neutral and live less heavily on the resources of Earth in a sustainable manner.
Niels Pemberton You're joking, right? Carbon neutrality makes as much sense as forest creatures for defense.
