It is new york city and in the mid of times square with thousands of people. I hear what you say but given the tense environment, such an act is bound to end up tragically.
I agree with you, a highly agile person with a knife can do a whole lot of damage with a knife by the time the officer raises his/her weapon to retaliate. A knife is a deadly weapon, the officers stopped the threat.
I am an instructor and have worked in law enforcement for 9 years. The only thing I am saying you cannot go up to some one and tase him when he has a weapon, doing so would put your life in considerable harm.
I think NYC cops are really jaded, stressed, overworked, and constantly on the edge. You can call it an over-reaction. It's not easy being a cop in this city. It's not even easy being a resident here. There's so much stuff going on. Cops here have nine lives.
Yes, I have been in taser instructor for 4 years. The current still travels through contacts on the cartridge when direct contact is made with a subject or if you remove the cartridge. This only causes severe pain, it is when the prongs enter the body and current runs through your body that it paralyzes a subject. The prongs should hit major muscle groups such as the back or thigh for greater effectiveness.
He didn't lunge at them until that last block. They repeatedly told him to drop the knife and lay down. He refused. He was a threat and Officers are trained to FULLY eliminate threats. Great work by the NYPD. Let me put this in terms that you'd better understand. Lunge at police with knife = getting lit up. This is the last time I'm replying back to you as it seems there is no getting through to you. I'll let all the thumbs ups I got and no thumbs you got speak for themselves.
Officers discharged twelve rounds (9 from one officer, 3 from another) from their firearms. The reason why twelve shots were fired is because the idiot was moving wildly and lunged at Officers. If you know anything about shooting, it is quite hard to hit a moving target.
As you quoted, I said "may" have been. And maybe the stopped taking his medication. I did not state "when someone automatically goes there - the guy was swinging a knife," so you have no right to feel irked.
Read that article I sent you. Police Officers are trained to shoot to kill, not to wound. They're trained to aim for center mass, not legs. It's a lot easier to miss body parts like arms and legs.
Any country with even minimal police training knows that shooting bullets into the air is a VERY bad idea. Bullets don't dissapear into the thin air, they come back down and have killed many people by accident. Firing a warning shot into the ground also runs the risk of riccochet which has also resulted in a number of accidental deaths or wounds. It's definately not the "usual protocol" to fire your gun to get someone's attention. Only in special cases/circumstances would it be considered.
I Dont hate the USA, going there every year from Europe. We (friends and me) would LOVE to have a police like that, that eliminates such psycho freaks immediately!! Good job!!
Based on the reports I read, he lunged at the officers before they shot him. This man "Darius Kennedy" apparently had a prior record for pot, and was high at the time of this incident. He was not in full control of his mind or body. It's sad really, both for him and the officers that had to shoot him in his state of marijuana delirium. Just another example of pot-fueled violence. When will we finally rid our streets of this deadly drug?
Tasers work at a max of 15 feet - that leaves a very small distance to find out if the taser was effective or not - or if he even had time to aim and pull the trigger of the taser. In a situation with a man with a knife at distances like this lethal force is the only option - at 20 feet an officer couldn't even draw his gun before a man could run up and stab him.
I don't mean to say that shooting someone in the leg is more dangerous than any other place, just saying it's more dangerous that people think. If I could tell the cop where he/she gets one shot at me? I'd pick the leg because they'd probably miss! But my point is, I'd rather not have them shoot even one bullet at me if they don't plan to kill me. Use something else.
Is a knife that scary to you? I handle one every day. The way that guy was skipping down the street, back turned, and the vast number of police present, it is outrageous that not one of those cops had the nuts to tackle that guy. Especially with all that noise, and the fact he had been pepper sprayed several times and could probably hardly see. Would have never seen, or heard it coming. I would have tackled him, even as a citizen. But then, I'm not a coward.
A taser is for people that forcibly resist a law enforcement officer not for someone wielding a weapon to could cause death. You only have one shot and it is electronic (prone to failure, I have first hand experience in this).
I wondered the same thing, but you had to be there. The guy looked crazed. My impression of the knife was that it was ridiculously large, like Rambo sized. . If I remember it correctly it was one of those kind with a set of brass knuckles on the handle. According to news reports, he was pepper sprayed first with no results.
- "lethal force is the only option - at 20 feet an officer couldn't even draw his gun before a man could run up and stab him." - The guns are already drawn. Can you lawyer your way out of that one, after you actually watch the video over again?
You state that if someone came at you with ANY knife, you guarantee that you could take them down with ONE SHOT. But how can you be so certain, unless you've already done so? Have you?
So ridiculous... One cop with a taser could've handled this if not 2! All these cops taken away form other parts, corners of the street for one guy! Shame on you!
I am not propagating any myth. The original poster used the excuse that the deceased may have been mentally ill. My point is that when this happened, those LEOs had no idea if he was or not. I am not saying that mentally ill people are more or less violent than any other person. I am saying in this scenario it doesn't matter if he was or was not.
Since you're still in training, perhaps you're unfamiliar with the sounds of gun shots. Because there is one cop who begins shooting, while another joins in at volley 5, making 14, by two officers.
they dont have tazers or bean bags, surely there is non lethal means I mean he is only holding a knife. Did he kill anyone prior to this filming with said knife.
Sorry, forcibly resist but do not assault or have a weapon. Like for example someone that does not let themselves get handcuffed. You do have one shot in most tasers. You have to remove the expended cartridge and reload another one. That is if the taser and cartridge works as it is prone to failure due to humidity or other environmental factors. In addition, the public can assist law enforcement and put their own lives on the line. Maybe they can do it better unarmed and with less force.
Like I said, I have experience with tasers, a lot. You can use it without the cartridge but they do what they call a drive stun but that does not paralyze them like you see in the movies, it just hurts a lot but you can still move and attack. I've never trained anyone to disarm a person with a knife, I've taught to fend off the attack and go to your weapon. Like I said, the public can help and put their lives on line also.
I believe tasers are affective in countries where suspect most likely won't have a gun due to different weapons policy. I'm from a different country so it is strange to me also when I see a group of officers pointing a gun to the man with a knife and no one has a taser. They had enough time and space to select a different weapon and end this story just meters where it started. But.. if the suspect most likely has a gun under his shirt playing with taser could take too much time and distraction..
Uhm, once a person pulls out AN 11-INCH KNIFE the threat level is increased and deadly force is necessary. He was a threat to the Police Officers and bystanders and the threat got eliminated. The reason why so many shots were fired is because he was moving around wildly as Police shot him. If you have any shooting experience you'd know that it's quite hard to shoot a moving target. Bottom line though, you weren't there and you're not a Police Officer. Don't you dare judge them.
Yeah I know. I'm guessing this guy was a little disturbed to begin with, and was probably tired of getting in trouble for weed. It would have been his 8th offense, and no doubt he would be facing a maximum sentence.
Justified shooting, but what is SO SAD is that look at all the bystanders with their phones wanting to get a video clip of this. Dude in the back ground screaming "get your camera's"..WHAT HAS THIS WORLD COME TO????? Do we not have anything better to do? Go on with your day and let the officers do their job. I'm sure with the multiple camera's in the sky, it incident was captured on tape. This whole social media thing on who can post to You Tube the fastest is getting so out of control.
So how much training does it take to score 7 hits out of 12 (!) shots fired from close range, with impacts spread from chest to foot, on a man who was carrying a freakin' IKEA kitchen knife? There's a two-digit number of police officers an none of them is carrying a taser? You dare to call that "the best" police work?
Well I lived in London (which is also a crowded place) some years ago and the majority of policemen do not carry firearms in the UK. They have to talk with the people or they can use (for example) CS spray in case of emergency.
Okay, sorry. I seem to be criticizing the wrong person. It was MrDopeKeen who brought up the idea that the guy may have been mentally ill. It just irks me when someone automatically goes there - the guy was swinging a knife, therefore he's probably mentally ill. Actually, he probably isn't. Like I said, mentally ill people are less violet than "normal" people. As long as they stay on their meds. It's when they stop taking their meds that problems occur.
And don't get me wrong, after actually seeing cops in other countries act, I think the NYPD is one of the most efficient and professional force in the world, (they are my bumper sticker!) The cops did nothing wrong. It's just regrettable that a life has been lost, but perhaps it was the "less bad" solution. The problem started when this guy (we know now he was no saint and he was sane enough) was just a child. And both his parents and the State failed in rendering him a good person.
The only people who think cops should shoot for the arms or legs are those who have watched way too many movies and have very little if any experience with firearms. Extremities like the head, legs, and arms are much smaller targets than the torso and are constantly moving at much higher velocities than the torso. I don't care how good of a shot you are, you're never going to have 100% accuracy on a target like that, and missed bullets become liabilities -- even more so in a crowded city.
you are wrong darling. btw there is no need for gun or tasers or peper spray. there is a way to disarm men with a fricking knife without killing him. they are trained for that. taser is not spend by firing... you can still use it without reloading.
That's what was asked....He was tired of sick of being tired and enough with all the harassment just because he was not in agreement with police behavior and how they handle day to day life situations does not give them the right to shoot him.....I will see you again Uncle D..We love you and forever be missed....Thanks for protecting us
Now they finally could prove the positive side of a Stun gun (electrical wire version)... Sadly this officers choose to shoot 15 BULLETS in the most TOURISTIC street in New-York. Who is wacko?
My apologies. I am worked up. It's just that I see this happening a lot around the country. And believe, we've been conditioned to think police conduct, such as this, should be the standard procedure. It's not. This is a police state.
Do I have this right? they're more than 10 american policemen, who run after a man with mental disorder or a junky and a knife? And they shot him with 12 shots?
@micp2964: Why post this video if you didn't capture the money shot?!?!?! At least you know how to shoot steady video instead of the earthquake that Noilliusion posted.
Fire a warning shot in the air or in soft ground? Did you really suggest that? They are in the street, no soft ground there. A shot in the air, what goes up must come down genius. They could have course tried some other form of non lethal force, Taser for instance, but it's a split second decision and I'm not going to second guess them on here.
One quote stands out above all. All it said...USA is gone... The previous comments spoke a million words. Heart wrenching words. What this. Country was founded on is dead and the memories are being stole everyday and we stand by and watch because we are to busy trying to survive or so self absorbed with popularity contests through Facebook and twitter. Please wake up America. Please
The crazy maniac with the gun got shot because he was a threat to public safety! Not officer safety! He was very close to a crowd of innocent people! Justice served.
“Why do they need guns?“, you ask. But in the next breath you suggest that they carry a machine gun in the car! I think it's admirable that (not all) London cops carry guns; it speaks well of that society. Here in NYC, 10 cops have been shot so far this year. However, the number of people killed by NYPD officers in 2010 was EIGHT; in 1971 it was 93! In 1990 there were 2,245 homicides in NYC; in 2009 there were 471. The people of my city are much safer because of the NYPD. I'm grateful to them.
In europe the police would try to de-escalate the situation instead of all jumping on the man. Bad work done by a bad trained police force. A shame for the US. Also a shame for people that think this was the right thing to do.
Well i'm not in the habit of revealing what I do and where I do it to anonymous strangers on the internet. As if that information would even be relevant. How many people really choose where they live and what job they are able to get? Not a majority. I could only assume that you were asking those questions in order to say something like "i have no idea what it is like to be a cop in a big city" or something of that nature. I have lived in many places, worked many jobs.
This article you post says absolutely nothing about shooting in the arms and legs. It does say they fired warning shots sometimes. Warning shots can be dangerous and are not allowed in New York City. Second, this article simply says they dont shoot at people often. Well, maybe they just don't have to. Maybe people surrender faster in Germany. Maybe crime is much lower. There is no analysis at all. So you've shown nothing unfortunately.
If he was mentally challenged, he has little or no awareness of the consequences of his actions. So no matter how ample the time to surrender was, he would never surrender: he didn't understand he was acting wrong. Anyway, none of us were there and I'm not judging the cops' actions. After 3 killing sprees, they did what they had 2 do 2 restore the credibility. The responsible for this guy being loose (as with the CO guy and the other crazy criminals) here is the State, that fails in preventing.
I feel so shamefull for all the guys yelling at the cops : "Shoot him ! Come on, Shoot him down !"
A part of me just lost faith in Hummanity...
Only one guy with a knife requires a hundred cops. Wow
dude,,get a clue,,he's in time square,,that means a crazy maniac in the middle of thousands of children and women and all kinds of people.
It is new york city and in the mid of times square with thousands of people. I hear what you say but given the tense environment, such an act is bound to end up tragically.
when ur kid gets stabbed b/c he thinks like you, YOU would cry b/c there weren't 200 cops.....STFU!
@YTtardsmustdie preach brother preach!
Franklin Pachay am I right.....say what.....
Well done lads! Thank you for protecting NYC and its visitors! God bless this troubled soul!
Hi great video what kind of camera did you use?
I count TWELVE SHOTS not four. The other video must be somewhere around. What was in that video?
I agree with you, a highly agile person with a knife can do a whole lot of damage with a knife by the time the officer raises his/her weapon to retaliate. A knife is a deadly weapon, the officers stopped the threat.
Did you see the gost at 0:54!!?? ..on the right
May I ask you what you do for a living? And where? Thank you.
I am an instructor and have worked in law enforcement for 9 years. The only thing I am saying you cannot go up to some one and tase him when he has a weapon, doing so would put your life in considerable harm.
Is this GTA IV with ENB?
wow striking commentary there transploft8....you work for BET?
Do police get trained to shoot in the legs in these situations or is it just BOOM HEADSHOT?
I think NYC cops are really jaded, stressed, overworked, and constantly on the edge. You can call it an over-reaction. It's not easy being a cop in this city. It's not even easy being a resident here. There's so much stuff going on. Cops here have nine lives.

I love how all these videos overlap. It's like watching Elepant.

He lunged towards them and swung the knife wildly. Officers did what they had to do.
Policeofficers do not shoot to wound nor do they shoot to kill. They shoot to stop the agressor!
How is this not making sense to you? Man with knife + lunging towards police officers = deadly force

Did the Jewelry store have bullet prof glass?
As an insider, it's even more painful to experience the rise of the police state.
yeah right. and that "split second derision" took 7 BLOCKS!
I don't mean to say that shooting someone in the leg is more dangerous than any other place, just saying it's more dangerous that people think. Wow this is like a batman scene strait out of the movies with dozens of cops

The perp attacked an officer with a weapon. he brought it on himself. He had multiple chances to drop the knife and resolve this peacefully.
Was your comment meant to be directed to me? If so, what did I say that you are taking issue with? Thank you.
Why is he jumping up and down?
- "lethal force is the only option - at 20 feet an officer couldn't even draw his gun before a man could run up and stab him." -
The guns are already drawn. Can you lawyer your way out of that one, after you actually watch the video over again?
How would you have handled it?
You state that if someone came at you with ANY knife, you guarantee that you could take them down with ONE SHOT. But how can you be so certain, unless you've already done so? Have you?
Son : Dad, which is the most advance police department
Dad : NYPD Son...!!!!
After watching the video
Son : Dad, why the fuck you always joke with me
Why wasn't any warning shot fired? There was plenty of time?
To Protect and to Serve...yeah right! With 12 Shots for a harmless, weird, marijuana smoking man with a goddamn knife...over and out!
Since you're still in training, perhaps you're unfamiliar with the sounds of gun shots. Because there is one cop who begins shooting, while another joins in at volley 5, making 14, by two officers.
Don't bring a knife to a gunfight!
they dont have tazers or bean bags, surely there is non lethal means I mean he is only holding a knife. Did he kill anyone prior to this filming with said knife.

it's a high speed chase on foot? did it end in a different state? go in there and get his ass already.
Uhm, once a person pulls out AN 11-INCH KNIFE the threat level is increased and deadly force is necessary. He was a threat to the Police Officers and bystanders and the threat got eliminated. OK , Perhaps the police should have let him carve up a few dozen innocent people first.
kudos to your hometown police force. they sound like a great group of folks to have around.
Justified shooting, but what is SO SAD is that look at all the bystanders with their phones wanting to get a video clip of this. Well I lived in London (which is also a crowded place) some years ago and the majority of policemen do not carry firearms in the UK. They have to talk with the people or they can use (for example) CS spray in case of emergency.
You miss the leg with even one shot and that bullet is ricocheting off the pavement and hitting whoever is on the other side of him.
Okay, sorry.

It's all about likelihood. If you had to choose to get a (not 12! Damn!) single shot in your leg or in your torso, what would you choose? See!
And don't get me wrong, after actually seeing cops in other countries act, I think the NYPD is one of the most efficient and professional force in the world, (they are my bumper sticker!)
The cops did nothing wrong. It's just regrettable that a life has been lost, but perhaps it was the "less bad" solution.

Yes, but clearly you could see where a little organization and team work could have ended that without killing him, right?
you are wrong darling. btw there is no need for gun or tasers or peper spray. there is a way to disarm men with a fricking knife without killing him. they are trained for that. taser is not spend by firing... you can still use it without reloading.
I just wonder why the one cop alone ... that wasn't that far from him ... didn't just shoot him in the leg .
there is no question about him being HIGH AS A KITE. Why killing him? He was no some wild animal.
That's what was asked....He was tired of sick of being tired and enough with all the harassment just because he was not in agreement with police behavior and how they handle day to day life situations does not give them the right to shoot him.....I will see you again Uncle D..We love you and forever be missed....Thanks for protecting us
An emotionally disturbed man smoking marihuana , cops wanted to arrest him for doing that and he draw a huge knife.
Now they finally could prove the positive side of a Stun gun (electrical wire version)... Sadly this officers choose to shoot 15 BULLETS in the most TOURISTIC street in New-York.
Who is wacko?
There are plenty of police up in Vancouver BC that are quick to pull the trigger on unarmed people, what the hell are you talking about?
My apologies. I am worked up. It's just that I see this happening a lot around the country. And believe, we've been conditioned to think police conduct, such as this, should be the standard procedure. It's not. This is a police state.
Can I have a logical repsonse please? Preferably one that has had critical thinking applied to it? Or are you just going to play John Wayne?
Ahh what a great start to a glorious Sunday! Deadlocked knuckle dragger blazed in Midtown.
That is quite an assumption to make considering the guy only has a record of being a nuisance and possessing some marijuana. Was probably just fed up.
Do I have this right? they're more than 10 american policemen, who run after a man with mental disorder or a junky and a knife? And they shot him with 12 shots?
Lied about what? He had a knife, he didn't drop it... it's all on video!

He had a knife. It would have endangered the life of an officer, with results in getting shot. As seen.
The dog survived the shotwound.

BAh where did they shoot?
Well i'm not in the habit of revealing what I do and where I do it to anonymous strangers on the internet. As if that information would even be relevant. How many people really choose where they live and what job they are able to get? Not a majority. I could only assume that you were asking those questions in order to say something like "i have no idea what it is like to be a cop in a big city" or something of that nature. I have lived in many places, worked many jobs.
They don't have tasers in NYPD?
It was a regular 11" kitchen knife. still . they could not just shoot him in the leg? 12 shots to the chest to stop him?
They tried talking to the man but then he lunged at a police officer so they had to shoot.
Sushi chef took a smoke break. And this is what happened.
