So basically $200 for a bluetooth gamepad, got it! It should be possible to connect a logic analyzer to SPI bus of that RF chip and figure out what happens there protocol wise.
Unfortunately it won't be possible to build your own for cheap unless the authentication/encryption keys are extracted from the main SoC..
Yep. It’s a rip off.
It should have come with the full kit to begin with, with the motion as the add on. They know how to get you.
Antenna cover was the most difficult part for me. Thanks for the guide mate
Unreal. This costs more than most radios used in fpv. Criminal, almost!
So if you lose video feed you also lose goggles feed? That is quite bleak.
Yep correct on the Avata 2.
Actually on Avata 1 I've had a few situations where the remote looses connection but the video is super stable, the drone didn't failsafe also I was unable to stop, pause or RTH as the remote was not available. So it's very freaky watching the drone flying forward in manual while have no control at all. Those breakups lasted about 1-2 seconds at most and then the signal and control came back. For comparsion on DJI FPV as soon I loose control or video the drone was failsafing, pausing immediatelly and then activating RTH.
@@MadRC Then I'm definitely going to stick with ELRS for TX.
I believe the remote already had worse range than the video for a lot of people before. I know for the standalone VTX’s almost everyone ends up moving to an ELRS/crossfire radio due to this
Would you do a motion controller teardown as well?
This is why people need to watch videos right to the end before asking questions that the presenter has already answered. He said that he probably won't do it because that would result in some breakage to the Motion Controller 3.
it's lovetoy, not motion controller
I have been trying to get into it tonight but still not joy.
@@MadRC I'm not sure if I'm interpreting this correctly
Is there any way to adjust horizontal spring tension from inside?
Wow. Big profit for DJI on those units at a cost of functionality that should be there IMO in case of a goggle failure or issue. Very disappointing.
Yea DJI has big margin on this remote.
Hi, thanks for your vidéo, pls do you know where i can buy only gimbals/ joystick ? I broke one of them
I sent my ne avata 2 back to dji last week it will ill have it back tomorrow hopefully they fixed the 5.8 ghz it was glitchy right in front of me.
Now the real question: why is the controller still just as expensive?😅
Also does it mean the overall latency can be even lower if the controller still directly connects to the drone?
It’s because DJI at the root of the company stems from literal evil
Curious 🧐 if you could teardown the DJI battery. Everyone thinks there so special. I wonder if they’re just molicells?
Molicell doesn't produce lipos.
@@neuromancer692 I’m pretty sure they are lithium ion batteries. There’s no way lipo’s can last that long. Besides u can’t really fly them aggressively so theirs no reason to use lipo’s.
@@BoondockStryker The only time Dji used Liion in drones was for the Mini 1. They switched to Lipo for the successor. You can watch disassembly videos if you want to. There is no reason for Dji to lie about that, besides it would be illegal.

Hey Mads, currently have an issue with the DJI FPV Controller v3. When I bring the throttle down (left stick). 0 being all the way down & 100 being all the way up, at around 25-30 it gives 100% input to left YAW when the stick is centered. Have you heard of an issue like this before? What could be causing? I've only been flying manual with it as it should be used. Maybe been flying too aggressively? Appreciate your insight! Thanks.
No that's new to me. Tbh it's likely a bad pot.
@@MadRC Funny thing is.... it's happened to me twice so far. This is my replacement controller. If I connected it to the PC via USB-C for too long, could it fry anything in the controller maybe? Also the first controller that had a similar issue was with the Roll / Pitch stick (Right stick) instead of left.
@@MadRC th-cam.com/video/EEa3cgDpBls/w-d-xo.html
Good 1 Ian
That looks like it cost them $10-$20 total to make. Why is it priced at $200?
Yep they have HUGH margin in this.
So, if you lose video signal, you lose RX signal at all. Great.
Unfortunately you’re gonna have to suck it up if you want to fly for real and not use the motion controller.
Many people don't understand this connects between the controller and Goggles to eliminate the folding antenna on top.
I picked this up and I am ordering an Avata 2 soon. I'm a bit concerned that one the hardware gets unlocked this radio may not work with PNP BNF's the way that the FPV2 can. If they do ever work, users will need to have both the goggles 3 and FPV 3 for bind and fly PNP drones. What do you think?
Many of us understand this controller has no antenna on top. Infact it’s one of the main features, and the replacement as Ian highlighted in the video is nothing more than cheap rubbish.
I think DJI is doing this hobby and community harm. No clue why but a large portion of people love DJI products.
The second you throw that shit away and build your own quad you will literally view DJI products as scams. And you’re going to feel terrible seeing people all happy to spend $2100 on the avata 2 only to realize that it literally is incapable of flying full acro.
It’s like I see heaps of retired older people try and pick up the hobby then get sucked into this DJI trap. Almost like watching someone get scammed but they are loving it.
13:56 "DGI" ? and we all thought they were called 'DJI'
I can’t believe I paid 200 bucks for something that empty….
Your not alone 🤣
Like the dildo controller that they force everyone to get it on their shelf. After I tried to sell it for pennies and no one had interest in it I've literally trashed my in the bin, brand new only one time use.
Sucker's lol I got the dji fpv kit used for great deal on ebay! Couldn't be happier eith it! Honestly I'd probably buy the avata 2 if I had the cash rn lol
I think the same
Aww shit, I already paid for a pre order
We are LOVING these teardowns 🤩
They should've slimmed the case profile and made the materials higher end. Just got the controller 3, and it's $100 over priced forsure. Compared to a PS5 controller it feels cheap, bulky, and light. The rubber on the back doesn't even provide extra grip, feels just like plastic all around. Lame DJI, Avata 2 is awesome tho, is a total rip off to charge extra to get full acro. No reason it shouldn't be much more capable out of the box. Oh, and that geo zone crap doesnt help either, FCC mode is a must.
Good old DJI, charging the same for a cheap 2.4 Wi-fi controller as they do for the O3 predecessor. Avata 2 looks less appealing with every new video I see.
Not to worry I'm beginning to wonder if I should sell mine ...
The main thing is that it works and it’s AWESOME!!! I’m having a blast with the Avata 2.
I’ve also found that my signal strength with the Avata 2 is much stronger compared to A1. Could it possibly be that all the signal strength is focused on goggles only instead of both goggles and controller?
Anyway, thanks for the tear downs. Really useful information.
I sold my AVATA 1 but do remember with the latest firmware I wasn’t able to fly anymore without the goggles connected with the rc or the motion controller. Was it communicating through the goggles integra?
Interessting Stuff, that explains why the Controller is so unbalanced
considering no O-transmission unit inside, just one signle cell of a battery etc - the internal cost of production of such device for DJI should be no more than 40$... wow, this is some remarkable margin maintained here.
I hate not having the weight if the 2nd battery because the fealing is just off
Super interesting, and very much appreciated. Thank you!
Can i binding this rc3 to another drone non dji with O3 air unit ?
Are these changes to DJI’s transmission system their way of trying to stop people from using their equipment like the previous DJI goggles for anything else other than DJI equipment?
No it’s just cost saving.
@@MadRC another serious question for you? Is there any concern about harmful rf signal exposure that close to your head. I would see more of a concern for FCC users due to their higher power output. It was discussed many years ago on rc groups but as pointed out then your radio transmitter was at your torso and your video transmitter was on the drone but now that everything on all bands are on your head surely there has to be a little concern.
Radiomaster bandit cnc metal teardown?
No beer?
I like the jersey 👍
Great video series. You could get a NanoVna V3 and check the Antennas VSWR as they have UFL connectors. Thank you very much.
What happens in this world ..... Empty remort have somany features .
Can’t wait for the market to get flooded with barely used avata 2s 😂.
Why would that happen? Avata 2 is excellent! Comunication betwen googles - Controller - Drone has been improved too, why people may want to sell their Avatas 2??
It won’t happen. Usually people who bought it are more than happy with it. I read loads of reviews, forums and overall with all goods and some bads, people are pleased. I see people selling the first Avata so they can buy the Avata 2. Bad choice imo considering the first Avata is far easier to fix . I hate the new frame, it feels cheaper and fragile, I don’t know why DJI is doing this to us.
@@Gaby3DS You will either love fpv and see that you are very limited by this drone and buy a actual fpv drone or you will find that its frustrating and throw it in a closet. Both paths lead to selling it lol.
@@Robocopter_fpv I love FPV, i assembled3 and 5 inches Analog FPVs.
Avata 2 have better range, more fly time, in flight adjustable camera angle, perfect return to home function (normal fpvs are just crap), does not need a GoPro attached, real time video transmision to phone via WiFi (excellent for production works), works perfect out of the box.
In exchange of what? Some agresive acro? I just dont do agresive/extreme acro.
I think ill love it!
@@Gaby3DS 1. You can easily put a servo on an fpv drone and even a 3 axis gimbal with a bit more effort.
2. As soon as O4 air unit comes out you will get better range with aftetmarket antennas.
3. Ive literally never needed the return to home function because I know how to keep signal but inav and betaflight have very good return to home functionality now.
4. I want to carry a gopro its much better then the O4 unit with true 24fps a proper log profile and 5.7k 8:7 ratio.
5. You can setup an hdmi out to get video feed to a monitor and then brodcast that anywhere u need.
6. My 7inch with a lion pack can fly up to 35 mins and even at the very end of the pack it still flys better then the avata.
7. If you take a hard crash you can easily repair your drone a big no on the avata.
8. Agressive acro = putting the drone where u need it for the shot. Good luck doing anything that takes any kind of punch and aggressive flying which is literally the entire point of fpv cinematography.
9. Your not limited to whatever dji decides to give you. The whole world of fpv frames/ motors/ cameras etc.
10. Good luck doing anything different from the other thousands of cookie cutter avata pilots do
wonder if you got transfer internals to a new shell and install full sized gimbals..
Can someone tell me what is the reason behind clips in the shells of electronics? Wouldn't just screws hold up well?
waiting for the battery tear down 🎉
Surprise surprise
DJI Gamepad at its finest 🎮🕹️
wait, this controller connects to goggles and not the drone? cant you fly the drone if the goggles arent connected?
Nope you can’t fly without goggles. I just tried and quad just hovers until it reconnects. Even if u have return to home set up it will just hover there. This is a bad but if your goggles die while flying especially if your a mile out or so
No you cant on Avata 2
Correct
Will it work with o3 or googles v2 ?
No lol
What do you think of in terms of latency regarding this system. If the remote controller 3 has to go through the goggle in order to control the drone. Does that mean more latency compared to to remote controller 2?
I don’t expect it to have anything that will affect users. The live feed is already 26ms so even if it added 1-2 it’s not going to be a major issues imo.
@@MadRC great, thanks for your reply!
Hello, do all the previous controls also not communicate with the drone? only googles? min. 6:12
No this is new to the avata 2
@@MadRC ohhh tanks ...and nice chanel...
I considered glueing some coins inside just to add some weight. It does not feel like a $200 remote, and now we see why (it's not)
Yea DJI is making some margin on this.
Heat shrink an old 18650 and install it. The mount is already there for it..?
Thanks for doing it! Based on your last livestream I decided to return Avata 2 before it's broken in pieces :)
