On the mountain of Panagia in Nemea and specifically on a steep rock is the wonderful monastery of Panagia tou Vrachos, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. The monastery is located almost in the middle of a steep and rocky mountain, of Polyphegos, while inside the cave there are the ruins of a small temple, probably a catholic one, which today is a very important sacred pilgrimage.
In the southern part of the rock there are also ruins of a unique medieval settlement, the remains of which testify that the houses were built adjacent to each other, while at the root of the rock there is a water tank apparently for the water supply of the settlement.
At the top of Polyfengos there are ruins and a massive wall with loopholes! This is the small fortress of Polyfengos that controlled the narrow entrance to Nemea.
The Holy Icon of the Monastery is kept today in the Metochi of Agios Athanasios for greater protection. It is characterized as the Virgin of Passion, while to the right and left of Her figure and at the top there are painted Angels kneeling, which bear the symbols of Passion, while it is inscribed as "The Immaculate Virgin".
According to tradition in 1936 priests entered the monastery to plunder it and after snatching all the vows of the faithful, one of them, shortly before leaving, wanted to destroy the icon by shooting it. The bullet was "found" in the right hand of the Virgin Mary, who, according to tradition, cried, while even today there is the specific mark.
The monastery has, however, another peculiarity. Specifically, the fresco above the Holy Table depicts Christ, but in the four corners, instead of the 4 Evangelists, as usual, there are the animals of revelation.
The ruins of the old church of Panagia tou Vrachos, inside the cave is an impressive spectacle. This is the katholikon of the old monastery, which covers ¼ the length of the cave pit. On the rocky wall of the ruined temple are preserved to this day amazing frescoes, which are considered to be of the 11th or 12th century.
The icon of Ypapantis and Agios Georgios stand out from them. Some argue that this is the location of the seat of the Diocese of Polyfengos, mentioned from 1292 to 1458, when the castle was conquered by Muhammad the Conqueror. The post-Byzantine monastery of Panagia tou Vrachos was built after the destruction of the settlement of Polyfeggos and is wedged on the eastern and completely vertical side of the monolithic rock.
The local tradition for its creation states that a small boy, Leontios, fell on the spot where it was built, who was later found safe and sound. The little church of the Monastery was built where the little boy was found. However, exactly when it was built is not known, as the archives were burned by the Turkalvans in 1770. Only the icons of the iconostasis, some sacred utensils and the brass circular seal of the Monastery have survived. The seal depicts the Virgin Mary holding Jesus in her arms and the inscription "Monastery of Panagia Polyphegous of the Rock 1633".
Our Lady of the Rock experienced great glories from the beginning of the 19th century until the time of Kapodistrias, while during the Revolution she offered important services to the Struggle. Near the entrance of the Monastery there is a stone staircase with 70 steps and many turns, which climbs the rock vertically and ends in a small paved balcony.
In many places there is still a wall and loopholes. The cells are dimly lit and communicate with each other through interior doors. The roof is made of stone, vaulted and refers to catacombs. The katholikon of the Monastery is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Simple basilica, with a vaulted stone roof, covered on the outside by tiles. The roof reaches the height of the cave, which has been integrated into the main church, a typical example of a cave church.
