This is a fascinating season to watch. End of the classic 80s shape cars, grid packed with legends, and the very beginnings of all the telemetry coming into play.
Nothing against little Al. I know he's struggled quite a bit and to my knowledge has made great strides. It something that MILLIONS of people battle every day.
It's pretty comical, but at the same time his was a solid decade prior and he probably didn't even resemble the person he would become. Either way don't throw stones and such.
i figured it out. now a days (NASCAR mainly has this problem but Indycar has it at times) when tv covers it today, they only focus on the leaders and thats it. back in the 80s and 90s they would find battles and show them. thats why tv coverage was so much better back then
@ 1:14:48 you watch Al Unser Jr fly down the front straightaway into the turn 1 brake zone as a course worker is literally standing on the trackside side of the armco barrier. Lol the things they let slide back then....😯😂
I remember when Michael Andretti would deliberately run the front wing tip into a tire to cut it on a car he couldn't pass. I think they had to make a rule to keep him from doing that. I think what Jr did to Mario was a racing incident.
draginfly3000 Also NASCAR probably would never have expanded and boomed like they did in the late 90s. Tony George with the 25/8 rule gave NASCAR so much momentum.
Mario unlike Foyt was competitive into his mid 50s, that's what allowed him to be at a high level during a good portion of his sons prime. Definitely the king of longevity people thought Emerson was really old to be driving at such a level during this time but Mario is a solid decade older 😅
To bad that assclown Tony George killed of CART and wanted those horrible IRL engines and chassis in 1997. Then those idiots at CART were just plain stupid and thought they were high and mighty and folded up.
Despite the poor finish at Long Beach, 1989 would be the best year for the Porsche CART effort. Fabi had some great mid-season drives and finished 4th in the championship.
At the beginning of the front stretch, you can see marshals standing right out on the track. At one point, one of them is on track pushing a car during green. The in car shots show no padding around the head, no HANS, and nothing covering the head. It's amazing how unnecessarily dangerous this series was.
That's just not true. The majority of safety innovations came from CART be it equipment or the procedures of the safety team. F1 and Nascar both lagged behind. ...and who had a hans in 1989? Lol. Some drivers in CART wore I think it was called the hendrickson device?? But it wasn't by any means common.
Are you going to post the rest of the 1989 season? If so, be careful of D*** Video. They already blocked two races from this season (Road America & Mid-Ohio). Tread Lightly, IndyCar.......

this whole thing is amazing, 80s production and all!
refreshing :D
i absolutely love bobby unser commentating. 80s and 90s cart were so fantastic! still some of the most amazing cars ive ever heard
Ironic moment of the race. Little Al talking about people driving drunk gets him mad.
I think he was drunk when interviewed too.

He didn’t have his problems until he started at Penske he talked about it in his book .

Thank you Indycar for uploading these classics!
Legendary intro, announcers, drivers, and chassis. What a time!
Loved watching Little Al at Long Beach. Loved that blue Valvoline color scheme.
I was there. It was my first IndyCar race. My Dad took me and we sat in GA seats. I think we went 6 years straight after that.
Mario hitching a ride at the end amazing. Can't even think about doing that that last 20 years or so.
CART was such a great series, back when!
In all the races I've heard Bobby Unser's commentary on, I've never never heard him pronounce "cement" before. Now I can't unhear it.
In Long Beach Clay Regazzoni had a win in his last Ferrari year.
And Long Beach has a very epic battles in all motorspots
I like this track!
might be also worth a mention it's the track he had his career ending accident at js
that sweeping Left-Right leading to the backstrech was amazing in the 1990s, too bad they don't use Cedar Ave. to cut to Seaside way anymore.
8:13 for the race start.

Long Beach is one of my favorite tracks!
I like how it changed thru the years.
Screen graphics are removed. Why? Even back then there were leaderboards and lap counter... Some stupid contract obligations I suppose.

I love how Al Unser Jr ran his damaged car with no left-front wing and kept going like normal
If the "Split" had never happened. Imagine where CART's popularity would be today.

Amen
I wish F1 would do this with their archive! Amazing.
If F1 did this, then no one would watch the current seasons! Lol, they are SO boring!
They made it. But you need to pay to watch it
Great upload. Thanks Indycar.
Wow, didn't realize Michael and Mario raced at the same time in the same series.
Michael raced against his father and his son. Not sure how many others can make that claim.
Yeah you need to see the Portland race where they finish 1,2
@@Beardedvikingweirdo ;91
Raced in the same team for a good number of years too

SEE-ment
I was at this race! With the formula atlantics.
Hey indycar make your current cars sound like these old cars .
and more so PLEASE BRING BACK PAUL PAGE TO COMMENTATE. Even if he is retired
I just saw this race on TH-cam with another channel
Unser: 'watch out for the green car'
Green car: 'hold my beers'
10:54 that’s an oof right there
Epic
had no idea james weaver raced in cart.
quality is so good...
been watching the 98-00 cart races and they video is terrible compared to this..
Al Jr. took Emmo out at The Medowlands the season before, now he took Mario out. What till the I-500.
49:50 it sounds like a normal day at beech ridge
sick , sadly motorsports today sucks compared to back in the days..Imagine new engine technology with those body styles way better than todays
S.D.A.C have you even watched Indycar in the past 5 years? The new aero kits have looked awesome for awhile now.
i think its the tv coverage that sucks, not the racing
Joey Wirt Indycar’s NBC coverage is great. Sky’s F1 coverage would be great if they got rid of David Croft
@@joeywirt7953 ; Bingo ur correct

Little Al doesn't have any friends in the editing room I guess 🤣
That clip was painful 🤦🏻♂️
@@afrye3197 was he drunk himself when he was saying that?

Just wait this comment will blow up
Check out Unser Jr’s comments about drunk driving at 18:20. Ominous. It was probably a demon he was fighting even then.
Thank You. i was thinking of a lot of bad personal times coming for little Al and this late wife in the coming years.

As they own this I don't think it will be a problem. You understand this is the actual Indycar channel not some one pretending right?
Yeah, this is the official IndyCar channel, so the people who owns this channel is IRL who are basically the rights holders of all IndyCar and CART IP

No one cares
GET TOYOTA AND HONDA OUT OF INDYCAR
Toyota hasn't been in Indycar for a long time, and good luck trying to get Honda, who have been at it since the 90's, out of Indycar.
No I say the more manufacturers the better
