I have watched a number of channels for years and have noticed a drop in their content. I put together my own videos and know the work it takes, and really appreciate the talent you guys display. All your points resonate with my limited experience. Thanks for sharing!
Kelsi, If it wasn't for TH-cam, I wouldn't even get a chance to meet you both via online and learn about bus life. You both being on TH-cam truly inspired me in so many ways. You are very loved and welcome in my home anytime. Dinner included. You're no longer just Kels and Jay to me, you're my roadbuddies. I absolutely adora you both with all the love in the world from the bottle of my heart and I totally miss you guys. HUGS! You're the BEST.
You both have come so far!! It’s a blast to watch your builds and see what you do. TH-cam is so much better than TV because of creators like you. So honest and real. The reality junk on tv is scripted and fake. Thank you for the time and effort you put into this so we all can ride along!
Very well said. And know you and Jay are missed. A lot. Few out there tell the true and heart felt story. Thank you for the posts you have posted. Wow I can’t believe I have been watching you for almost 5 years.
So happy to see your video today. I sure hope you are not quitting YT, I would miss you guys to much. Stay safe and safe travels. And I will always be looking out for your next video. A fan.
Happy to see you Kel & Jay in the memory videos I miss watching your channel ❤ Hope all your dreams & adventures still go as planned Thanks for making my life a better place
Hey you guys. lol I sound like it's the GOONIES. Great to see you guys again, Stay safe and please, if you let the trolls bring you down, it's letting them win. You guys are so much better than the losers who are just jealous that you can make something from nothing and they really have no self motivation for themselves. I pray that you can learn to just ignore and block them and start having the happy life you are both looking for. Stay safe guys
I started on TH-cam in 2016 wound up having a heart attack so that put up can't get it but after getting my strength back a little bit I was able to get 570 something subscribers I don't know how many videos I have up but I started in 2022 seeing a lot of my TH-cam friends that I have met on TH-cam change and it wasn't for the better divorces, bad content, more worried about selling a product then doing content. I was just about to get going again last year I had an idea and I wound up with cancer so I just given up on the whole idea I watch TH-cam videos and this video tonight that you just put up I give it 100 thumbs up it was fantastic God bless stay safe stay strong stay healthy and enjoy life. 👍👍👍👍👍👍✌✌💖💪🎅PS I used to love talking to you about recipes and seeing your videos on cooking.
Being totally transparent, I’ve contemplated quitting my main channel for a couple months now because I hate the community I’ve built. It’s so negative, and I wish I had a more supportive audience. It made me inconsistent. That last segment definitely spoke to me. Great video!
I just subbed In today! The Airstream build hit my algo so I watched the series and fell in love with you both and all your hard work and after watching this video, I’m adding determination to the list! You’ve been doing this a long time and I respect it!
Good job. Very well done. Not a Tuber, but love being able to see all the various life choices and places that people go to. Right, be true to yourselves.
This is why I started following you two several years ago...you are *real*. I don't like carefully curated, perfectly photographed sterile, arrogant displays of (what is thought of as) enviable lives, and so...thank you both for being real. See ya when we see ya! Take care, and best to you all!
If not now, when? I love watching your videos and I also love that you are taking time and not posting so much. Its a great reminder that I need to get out and live my life too. So thank you! Thank you for being authentically you and being a marketer and a creator! You guys rock!
Hey you two. We’ve been here since damn near the beginning. You guys inspire us. Make the path you want. Tackle the challenges. Be vulnerable. Expose yourselves during the low times, celebrate the good times. But most of all, be true. Be authentic. You guys do all that. And regardless of the video we subscribe and watch for you guys…regardless of the content. We started our channel, bought a van, started a build…in part because you guys inspired us to challenge ourselves. Do something new. Do something difficult. But either way, enjoy the journey. Because if not now….when?
We've missed you, but we're glad you're taking care of yourself. We will always watch your videos! They're so good, and we've enjoyed following your story.
Thank you for sharing your experience. TH-cam isn't easy. It was one of the biggest pressures that drove me and Steph apart. Glad to hear you're striking a balance that works better for you.
I just started my TH-cam channel as a hobby. I have run right into the road blocks you talk about. I will never go TH-cam full time because of all the reasons you listed. Editing videos is a soul sucking process, and filming everything in my personal life is not something I want. So I applaud and appreciate people like you who do it full time. I only do a little bit to put back into TH-cam. However, people like you make TH-cam the real fun, learning, and useful tool. This is also the reason why TH-cam is millions times better than all the other social media platforms.
Thank you for saying that when you start TH-cam, to not put pressure on yourself. I have recently started uploading videos (850 subscribers) and film my micro camper build process. I have been anxious about not uploading regularly, as all I hear about succeeding on YT is being consistent. I have to remind myself, that I am actually building something, and that takes time (and money). Love your video, put lots of things into perspective, even if I am just starting out.
I will always watch when there is a new video. I don’t expect it I’m always just happy to see you when you do post. Stay safe and healthy out there. Enjoy your adventures and eachother and your kitties and your doggie. 😊
You guys are some of thee most genuine, real and inspirational people i have found on youtube. Kels your story telling is 2nd to none. You guys have inspired me in so many ways so thank you. The haters will always hate because they are un happy in themselves. Being unique and authentic in a world with so much influence is no easy feat and is something that you should both be proud of. Stay true to yourselves.
You've both got talents and skills to do any type of RV/Caravan or even home renovation, use them to enhance you work/life balance. If that includes TH-cam, that's your choice. Take care of each other. Regards from across the Atlantic
P.s. I know you said you’ve slowed down on posting but I’d say considering your videos hit my algorithm today (And I DONT NORMALLY WATCH OR SUBSCRIBE TO “VAN LIFE” videos) I’d say that the algorithm is currently leaning strong towards you and your content so id consider posting as much as possible thru the years end and your subscribers and views should grow quicker! I suggest (since you said you post less full lengths lately) you just post a few entertaining little cool TH-cam SHORTS every week and it should get everything back into high gear with your channel! Either way excited to see videos from you in the future TOOTLES!!!
Great video Kels and Jay. I enjoy both of you so much. Both of your personalities, your honesty and openness , your genuine concern for other individuals, your professionalism, your talent, and your creativity. You two are one of my favorite TH-cam couples. I do not understand the background of TH-cam, but watching all the different videos, it does seem like a lot of pressure. Good luck in ALL YOU TWO DO.. 🤓🥰
THIS is a nice list of all the reasons I decided to NOT keep up with my TH-cam channel goals. It did not take me long to realize that it is not all just a cool and fun way to document my adventures, it really is work! Just filming can be work too as you are always planning shots and B roll filler and all that goes with even the simplest kind of video work just on an iPhone. The editing takes soooo much time and if you think you are just going to buy some editing software and take some TH-cam lessons... yeah, it is a time consumer and a learning curve. And finally, my wife was just not ok with it after a short time of seeing what it took on our trip to a national park. I never even finished the video as she got mad about the endless interruptions, that was my first and last day as a TH-camr. BUT, I have met some good people through TH-cam and even had some in person connections, but as for me being a creator? Nope, I'm too old and life is too short, but I love to find fun channels with folks who have the energy to put great content together like you guys!
Don’t stop dreaming! Rest, recuperate, then get back at it, because you’re the BEST! You have GREAT hearts, FANTASTIC work ethic, and OUTSTANDING outcomes - video production, construction, and personally (i.e. iron man races)! You make dreams come true! We are living proof! Pace yourselves and stay the course. PLEASE! 😘 Love, love, love you two!! ❤❤❤
We're all on a glorious quest to stay sane. I have no doubt that you two can pull that off. I think our tendency to focus on bad things, trolls in this instance, is an actual inherited instinct based on the fact that a hostile adversary can be the end of us and therefore merits serious attention. By recognizing the magnitude of the physical threat from an abusive comment, probably small, we can learn to decide where to put our focus rather than being dragged down. Practice a conscious choice to celebrate supporters to replace an automatic response of being haunted by insecure and abusive trolls. Healthy people have no desire to spread misery so we can put the insults into an appropriate category. 😊
I have many friends in TH-cam and it seems like they are all suffering. I have decided not to go in that direction because l see what you saying. l decided that 2 yrs ago after watching them struggle. And they still burn out regularly.
See..... I love your content. Your videos usually are not just filming something and posting it. Your videos have a purpose, have sense, are very thoughtful. The way you describe the scenes are in best spoken English, with easy to understand sentences and with very well picked words. Not to even talk about your vocabulary that you use, which is also very well picked and spoken. I love your thought process, when you wrap your mind around something. I think you are far ahead of most persons in your age. Maybe... older persons like me just like the "old fashion" way. For me, there is no need for these shorts. I think they are annoying and are not telling the whole story. I rather wait a week or two or longer for a new video to see content that even I can learn from or wrap my brain around. The end of your videos are usually not the end of me thinking about it. I appreciate this video. I kind of thought about doing videos for fun, but I do not have any time to spare for editing. So I rather watch videos with good content like yours. The unfortunate thing is, that I never had a chance to get to know both of you in person. I probably started too late to be interested in living in a school bus. When I started visiting skooliepalooza in Ehrenberg, AZ, you guys didn't went there anymore.
I think what everone forgets is that "youtuber" was never meant to be a full time job. There are no regulations, no safty net, no one to talk to when sh*t hits the fan. TH-cam still only offers the infrastructure of a website that hosts cute cat videos, and people make their lifes depend on it. I mean, most of the time you can only communicate with youtube executives over twitter, how awful is that? I am thankfull for all you creators, I've learnd so much and have seen so much more thanks to people like Kels and Jay, but I fear for their mental state and financial future everytime I watch them.
First hundred videos are bad......hee hee...My first 400 are bad and I'm only up to 283 videos. Rene wrote " These aren't videos....this ...this....this is a compilation of complete disasterpieces ".
I'm super in the beginning with my channel and because i live in eastern europe, money flow for my youtube channel is a challenge and my goal is just to share the stuff i normally do (mostly about maintaining or modifying our cars and some other stuff). A lot of time i look at my videos and can't figure out how i could increase their quality to make them more interesting while still showing all the details i want to show. Also, the time i am spending on filming and editing is another part that i always ask myself if it's worth continuing on, seeing that there's not some super bright future in it. I never thought youtube would be my only income and i still don't think it'll ever be, but i would like to see something more coming out of it. Right now it's just me investing time into it. Money not that much because most of the times i need to buy the stuff in my videos anyway. It's kinda sad to see this conclusion that you came to, but it makes total sense and i believe spending real time with your family is much more important than letting some random unknown people know what you are doing and not being able to enjoy it because of that. Wish you all the best!
We’re a baby channel in terms of subscribers but everything you said hit the nail on the head. We growing super slowly because we’re not putting pressure on ourselves so we’ll only post once a week or less, and only things we think are worth doing. It’s a balancing act between sharing and having a private life.
I feel like You Tube has run through a lifecycle of starting the whole channels thing and making it work for people and then slowly ratcheting up the corporate greed with the ever more intrusive adverts and then demonetizing creators so that they can keep everything for themselves. They even keep diverting me to pages whining about videos that contain adverts that they aren't getting paid for. I have no sympathy for them. So I will watch TH-cam, but if it dies, well that's OK too. There are more important things in the world.
I was following Bussy McBuface and completely addicted before I realized they had already ended their channel. Mike and Kerry said all the same things, all the same reasons for quitting. But I still watched all their videos !. I hope you share something when you have something to share.
Subscribed. What you've said is true. I didn't realized this industry was so tough until I started 2 months ago. I have to edit for hours just for a few minutes video. Then I have to take it down, re-edit and re-uload becuase of Content ID soundtracks. Only to find that my channel got no views. 💀
Travel might be the hardest category on the platform at this point. Low average revenue potential with a lot of work required per video. I think you did the smartest thing by using it as a way to get clients into your real business. That is where the power of the platform is unmatched.
Problem is TH-cam used to be a hobby, people treat it too seriously these days and as a source of income or more ridiculously, a job. No one forces people to make TH-cam videos. People should go into it knowing what it really is.
Nice and honest. Thank you. A group of friends that have done well are the guys in the Unsubscribe Podcast. They have an ever growing following and multiple sponsors. They grew unhappy with TH-cam and made their own streaming service. They bought their own server, and put it in a server farm in England. They started Pepperbox TV, and no one in the U.S. can screw with them. They are in total control. Many TH-camrs that are tired of being demonetized like the gun TH-camrs and the War news (Ukraine) TH-camrs have transferred their content over to Pepperbox TV. They still post on TH-cam but if it's demonetized it's not as big a deal they also put a lot of content on Pepperbox that just will never make it on TH-cam. That attracts viewers to Pepperbox TV for a small monthly subscription fee. The Unsubscribe guys have gotten so popular they're doing live shows in several cities on two sold out tours so far. They bought a house and turned the dining room into a studio. It's a multi bedroom house so they leave the upstairs bedrooms open for their guests, usually other famous TH-camrs. Also one or two of them live at the house to keep an eye on it and their equipment. Check them out. Good show, good guys.
26 years I've been here on the net and when it comes to trolls, just ignore/block/move on. It's not worth it. They don't want dialogue or conversation, they want attention. I know that at some time in the past on TH-cam, you could just delete their comments off your channel and there were automated tools that would do this as well. You also used to be able to shadow ban them (that was fun but also cruel). Not sure how it works today. I do like your content though, I hope you keep it going.
I have a hard time feeling for youtubers specially when their talking about trolls as a truck driver for almost 30yrs I'm dealing with opinionated idiots every day some of them become violent and/or suicidal when they're trying to brake check me for something as simple as entering the free way slowing them down for a moment also regardless of how much you love doing something the moment it becomes something that's financial controlled by someone else it becomes a job like anything else
There is a formula you can use which can turn around your life into more joy. Every moment of your life choose the one thing which excites you the most for that moment and do it, regardless of the outcome. Do this for every perceived moment. Try it for 30 days, see what happens. It sounds crazy but still give it a try and see, you might just be amazed.
8:18 ...I don't understand why someone would bother making a negative comment when nothing is stopping them from going to another video, channel, or prescription. Over these next years more people will get exposed for having personal issues as more researchers delve into their damaged personalities.
id hate to talk into the camera and record everything cause it becomes fake. id only be a skilled worker youtuber if i ever was reincarnated as you do your work and then can sell it and put it on youtube. Screw vlogging people dont understand how not having to work 9-5 is the ultimate luxury!Pure freedom. i own my company and i get to set my times. Love it. vloggin in a small van? naw goodluck.
The internet will never die. TH-cam is what you make it. I firmly believe that the views are controlled by higher ups though, most of the big 1m per video channels are mannequins on strings
AND LIKE ANY CAREER!!!! IF YOU DON'T SAVE MOST OF THE INCOME SO THAT YOU ONE -HUNDRED THOUSAND TO INVEST INTO A RETIREMENT PLAN OR HIGH YEILD SAVINGS THEN YOU WILL STILL BE WORKING HARD FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFES....BUT I GUESS THE BRIGHTSIDE IS THAT YOU WILL HAVE ALL THOSE MEMORY'S AND GOOD TIMES.....AND ACHIEVEMENTS!!!! I KNOW 4 DIFFERENT TH-camRS WHOM MADE SIX FIGURES AND THEN WENT MOSTLY BROKE ON THERE NEW IDEAS!!!!
I’m not familiar with your channel. I just clicked on this because I am interested in stories about the downsides of TH-cam. I have a channel of my own, but it’s nothing like yours, so I am confident it will never achieve any kind of success that might lead me to burnout. It’s just there for anyone who might bump into it; a legacy to be stored on the TH-cam archive. But if it ever did become popular, I’d want to avoid some of these pitfalls. Your list seemed very well thought out. The “this is our life” travel channels seem particularly susceptible to burnout because of the “quit your 9-5 job for a 24 hour job” aspect of them. That kind of burnout could happen on its own, or… what seems more likely, after you start accepting money in exchange for continued videos. Lots of the stories I’ve heard don’t really phrase it that way, but it seems like a very real concern - you’re taking money from people, so you feel obligated to produce content on a regular basis, instead of just making a video whenever you feel like it. And so, it becomes a grind, just like any other job. And then you burn out. But not before having to become that marketing person selling stuff. Which not only pains you, but is a nuisance to people watching your videos. I pay for the Premium membership to avoid commercials, and then am hit with commercials that are in the video. It’s annoying. Intellectually I understand the need, but emotionally it makes me angry. Which is not an emotion you want me to have when watching your video, I’m sure. I wish more people would do what Cleo Abrams from Huge If True does, which is add a progress bar when she does an ad, so that I can arrow past it and know when it’s over. That might hurt her, but I have to do it. If I’m able to reach the arrow key, I will speed past any ad, even if it means I overshoot and miss some content. It is very interesting to see so many people finding out, the hard way, that success on TH-cam is not all it’s cracked up to be. I will proceed with caution.
We made $127 in ad sense last month. We small but growing. It’s hard. Endless editing, ideation, shooting, telling the story we want to tell all the while trying to make something interesting for our audience. The best thing you can do to support your favorite creator is leave a thumbs up, leave a comment and watch til the end!
I really appreciate this! I originally started using TH-cam to post videos for my clients and then thought maybe I could earn money to help fund the service dog work I do currently out of pocket. Now I know to post what is meaningful and useful, focusing my energy instead on training dogs. I needed to hear this. Thank you! 🩵🐾
So grateful for your ability to share your heart and tell your story! This was so good Kels!
We will say, if it wasn’t for TH-cam, we would not have become friends ♥️ love you guys! Can’t wait to see you soon!
We’ve missed seeing yall but everything you said is 100% truth.

When I started visiting skooliepalooza in Ehrenberg, AZ, you guys didn't went there anymore.
not gonna lie, probably one of the best sponsership transition. I laughed so hard but crudos to the creativity
I think TH-cam is great,....... Regular life blows chunks, TH-cam makes it better. ,.tHanks for the video
I liked subscribed and commented . Great content!

XD
Very insightful :) I subscribed :)
Wonderful!
Thanx. 👌🏾
I do like your content though, I hope you keep it going.
where is the completed Airstream vid?
I have a hard time feeling for youtubers specially when their talking about trolls as a truck driver for almost 30yrs I'm dealing with opinionated idiots every day some of them become violent and/or suicidal when they're trying to brake check me for something as simple as entering the free way slowing them down for a moment also regardless of how much you love doing something the moment it becomes something that's financial controlled by someone else it becomes a job like anything else
Good video. I'm probably gonna quit my big successful channel soon too 😁
There is a formula you can use which can turn around your life into more joy. Every moment of your life choose the one thing which excites you the most for that moment and do it, regardless of the outcome. Do this for every perceived moment. Try it for 30 days, see what happens. It sounds crazy but still give it a try and see, you might just be amazed.
I like what you said, your youtube is tore resume.
And take lots of green breaks.
~Long live the solar tour.
8:18 ...I don't understand why someone would bother making a negative comment when nothing is stopping them from going to another video, channel, or prescription.
Over these next years more people will get exposed for having personal issues as more researchers delve into their damaged personalities.
I just fast forward through all the ads. Why do they pay for them. They dont work.
id hate to talk into the camera and record everything cause it becomes fake. id only be a skilled worker youtuber if i ever was reincarnated as you do your work and then can sell it and put it on youtube.
$2400/month is basically minimum wage.
We made $127 in ad sense last month. We small but growing. It’s hard. Endless editing, ideation, shooting, telling the story we want to tell all the while trying to make something interesting for our audience. The best thing you can do to support your favorite creator is leave a thumbs up, leave a comment and watch til the end!
all the You Tubers that are leaving I've never heard of.
Sooo....like starting any new business where you are taking an idea through all the steps to success. Lose balance, lose everything.
My son has edited blogs for people.....
...and nothing of value was lost...
youtube isnt a job.
@KyraAnn
I really appreciate this! I originally started using TH-cam to post videos for my clients and then thought maybe I could earn money to help fund the service dog work I do currently out of pocket. Now I know to post what is meaningful and useful, focusing my energy instead on training dogs. I needed to hear this. Thank you! 🩵🐾
