Laser Beam Machining (LBM) is a non-contact machining process that utilizes the energy of a focused laser beam to remove material from a workpiece. It is a precise and versatile method used for cutting, drilling, engraving, and surface modification of various materials.
The working principle of Laser Beam Machining involves the following steps:
Laser generation: A laser beam is generated using a laser source, which typically consists of a medium (such as a gas, solid-state crystal, or semiconductor) that is stimulated to emit coherent light. Common types of lasers used in LBM include CO2 lasers, Nd:YAG lasers, and fiber lasers.
Beam focusing: The laser beam is directed through a series of optical components, such as lenses and mirrors, to focus it onto a small spot size. The focused spot size determines the precision and intensity of the energy applied to the workpiece.
Workpiece preparation: The workpiece is typically placed on a computer-controlled platform or fixture, which allows for precise positioning and movement during the machining process. The workpiece should be capable of absorbing or reflecting the laser energy to facilitate material removal.
Material removal: When the focused laser beam interacts with the workpiece, several processes take place depending on the material properties and laser parameters:
Absorption: The material absorbs the laser energy, causing localized heating. The absorption depends on the wavelength of the laser and the optical properties of the material.
Melting and vaporization: The absorbed energy raises the temperature of the material, causing it to melt and evaporate. The intense laser energy can rapidly vaporize or ablate the material, creating a hole or removing layers.
Material ejection: The vaporized or molten material is expelled from the workpiece through the process of vaporization or melt ejection, assisted by the gas flow or by the use of assist gases.
Control and guidance: The laser beam movement and machining path are controlled by computer numerical control (CNC) systems, which interpret the design specifications and guide the laser beam along the desired trajectory. This allows for precise control over the machining process, enabling complex shapes and patterns to be created.
Laser Beam Machining offers several advantages, including high precision, non-contact processing, minimal mechanical forces applied to the workpiece, and the ability to work with a wide range of materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites. However, it may have limitations in terms of material thickness, speed of material removal, and cost of equipment.
LBM is commonly used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, medical, and jewelry, where precision and intricate machining are required. Applications include cutting thin sheets, drilling micro-holes, engraving markings, welding, and surface texturing.
